Mercedes Benz SL500 owners have reported 10 problems related to brakes failed (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I submitted via fax earlier this week a formal letter to mr. Exler the president & ceo of mbusa and, cc'd mr. King of the NHTSA that included information about known critical safety issued these vehicles had prior to mbusa importing them to the united states. Mbusa failed to disclose these known issues and, chose to importation these vehicles violating vehicle importation rules. Yesterday-January 31, 2019 I received a call from a representative of mbusa stating he was calling on behalf of mr. Exlers office concerning my letter. I will not be intimidated by mbusa while seeking the truth on why mbusa allowed these vehicles to enter the USA knowing these critical safety issues existed while misleading consumers and, the NHTSA. On January 21, 2019 my vehicle had what is described by mbusa as a catastrophic failure when the entire brake system failed. This failure could have killed me - and, other motorist. Mbusa has replaced the sbc unit at least 6 times and, still the issue and, other persist. The vehicle has been driven on average 4,000 miles annually. How many failures must happen before mbusa is fully investigated? they refused to provide me any information on the vehicles except the 4 year warranty period. Once I complete my research on these vehicles I will submit my findings to the NHTSA & ms. King.

While driving the car in town on city streets the sbs brake system failed as I came to a turn leaving me with no brake response even though the dealer says it was supposed to have hydraulic back-up to stop the car. I was able to coast and stop the car only with the emergency hand brake. The sbs system has been recalled twice by the factory but there is still something very wrong when a modern car had no back-up system. These cars are dangerous! luckily for me there was no accident and I had the car towed to the dealer and it is being repaired.

2003 Mercedes Benz sl 500. Consumer writes in regards to possible fatal flaw in vehicle. The consumer stated, as he was backing out of his driveway, he applied the brake and they failed. A red light and a sign instructed him to obtain immediate service. The mechanic, kept the vehicle for a week, but was unable to anything wrong with the brakes. At the mechanic's suggested, the vehicle was towed to the dealer. After the vehicle was there for a few days, the dealership called and said the problem was the battery had died. It was a secondary battery which supplied power to everything that consumed electricity, including the brakes in his model and year vehicle. So, if it failed, so would the brakes.

I have a 2006 Mercedes Benz Sl500. I have had numerous issues with the vehicle which were all covered under warranty. On 12-6-2009 I had a total brake failure. Luckily I was in a stopped position and the car started moving forward. The brake pedal was full pressed to the floor and the emergency brake did not work. Mercedes benz of greenway plaza(houston) 713-986-6600 did the repair. I was advised by kevin graves(my service advisor) that there was a recall and all repairs were covered under a extended recall warranty. On 1-7-2010 the exact same issue occurred, only this time I was moving in a elevated parking garage. I immediately down shifted to first and stood on the brake and pushed the emergency brake. Luckily again I was moving a very low speed and coasted to a stop. Mercedes benz of greenway again did the repairs and advised that it was another defective hydraulic brake pump. I have no confidence in this vehicle. After doing research there are a number of blogs and other web pages where people have had these issues. I have advised mb greenway plaza that I want out of this car and I am getting a total run around on pricing from there sales staff. This is not a lemon law issue this is a safety issue. I have also notified mb corporate in new jersey. 1-800-367-6372.

Mercedes-benz Sl500 (2005), 4000 miles. Brakes failed. It would seem to be an electrical or computer failure of some kind. Auto was serviced a week ago. Have had trouble with electrical and/orl features from first day of purchase. The most dangerous was today's brake failure. Had to place car in neutral and then in park to make it stop.
