5 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

I purchased this vehicle in 2014. My brakes completely went out while driving January 1 2018. I was attempting to stop at an intersection when the the vehicle would not stop with oncoming traffic on both sides coming towards me. I immediately pressed the accelerator and sped through the intersection to avoid an accident. . . . Absolutely terrifying and without any warning whatsoever. Because the dealership was closed I was unable to seek service that day. I called mercedes of richmond va being that was the closest dealership where I was visiting at at the time. Unfortunately I could not get an appointment until January 3rd. I had it towed that morning and they came back hours later notifying me it was in face the sbc system which needed to be replaced at the cost of $2006. I was outraged learning that mbusa knew of this issue NHTSA campaign number 04v296000 in June 2004 but closed it out in December 2013. I did not purchase the vehicle until 2014. I asked if there was anything they could do to assist me as one of the associates informed me about "good will" service where they might consider my situation and help. I was again extremely disappointed to learn they would only assist with $300 as we have 2 mercedes and have incurred thousands of dollars in known repair issues of the few years. I am asking that mbusa accept the cost of this repair as it was a known issue that they were replacing at no cost to owner. I have 131,000 miles on the car which is under mileage for that year. They told me to ask mercedes if they would consider assisting in any way but they said there was nothing they could do.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

While driving my Mercedes Benz 2003 Sl500 the brakes became disabled without warning. It was a terrifying experience. The first mercedes dealer I phoned told me that there was no known safety recalls for the brakes. The second mercedes dealer that I contacted informed me about 2 recalls in 2004 and 2005. I phoned the Mercedes Benz USA headquarters and spoke to a case manager who told me that mercedes' responsibility with this safety issue expired in 2012. How can a safety issue such as having no brakes while driving expire? how can a corporation be allowed to walk away from this type of potentially deadly safety issue? this is a well documented safety issue with this car.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 1998 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 05/17/2015

Driving at 40 mph when all of a sudden engine dies. Car becomes dead, very dangerous , at night middle lane of pacific coast hwy. Cant use breaks, everything is dead! cant steer nothing. Could have been killed. This has happened before twice. Now I'm afraid to drive my car if this happens when im on the freeway, thats a problem, endangering me and everyone around. This is nuts because I pride myself on keeping my car in tip top shape always and this is undetectable . But expensive to try and find out until I saw that 800 other people have had the exact same thing! what wrong with this picture?.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

While driving to work, I was going about 35 mph when the dash lights up red saying "service brakes, stop vehicle, etc". My mechanic looked over everything to do with brakes and could not fix it. He called mercedes of tallahassee and was told it was an electrical issue that was a common problem with this vehicle. It did have a recall on it, but it expired in July last year, just my luck. So I googled it and have now found tons of people with the same experience! how can the vehicle safety administration legally allow Mercedes Benz to continue letting this happen to people? how many accidents must take place, or god forbid deaths before something is done? I have no option but to pay out of pocket to have this piece of $100k junk fixed and pray it never happens again! Mercedes Benz and the vehicle safety administration better pray this doesn't cause an accident or I will sue the [xxx] out of both! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 01/12/2014

I drove out of my drive and tried to brake the car and a warning light came on saying that my brakes were malfunctioning. The car would not brake. The brakes on the car were dead. Fortunately there is a hill at the bottom of the road where I live and by going up the hill the car came to a stop. Fortunately there were no other cars or pedestrians on the road otherwise I would not have been able to stop. When I brought my car to the dealer, they said that it was a software problem and they would fix it for free. A few months before, I had taken the car in to the same mb dealer for general maintenance. Why didn't the dealer repair the software brake issue? do I have to get killed or damage other cars before they automatically repair the brake software, that they obviously knew to be defected and a potential for accidents? the issue should have been a recall item, due to the seriousness of the matter. The same car has a problem with the transmission which appears to be another software issue. Why doesn't the dealer automatically fix the software issue before I have an accident? the "fix-it" cost has to be minimal and the prevention of damage has to be huge. The mb dealer wants to replace anything that isn't right. They replaced my engine mounts at 42,000 miles for $1,600 whether they needed it or not, but they won't fix some simple software issues that coule kill or damage property? if the mb dealer doesn't want to do it because they don't make enough money, then hopefully the dot will force them to do it. Enough is enough. These are serious issues which I did not know about.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

The vehicle has a bracket on top of the gas tank that comes disengaded and causes this distinctive noise which sounds like something swinging and tapping against the gas tank and I has to happen a lot due to every service I have been asked about the problem. It also has to be something with multiple vehicles due to online mercedes owners are having the same problem. The sound is really disturbing and I would like an answer as to what to do. Thanks charles t. Willis.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz Sl500. The contact was driving approximately 20 mph when the brake was depressed, it abnormally went to the floor without resistance to the brake pedal pressure. There was five percent braking ability. The vehicle would not slow down. When the emergency brake was engaged the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they stated that the failure was contributed to the sensotronic brake control pump. The technician advised the contact that the failure was a common issue. The vehicle was not repaired; and the contact planned to sell the vehicle due to the safety hazard. The mileage was approximately 42,000. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 01/13/lj updated 01/27/jb.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz SL500

Failure Date: 06/22/2004

Due to deterioration of the wiring harness connection or failure of the hydraulic pump, the sensotronic brake control (sbc) system may default to the hydraulic back-up mode. In the back-up mode, the driver has braking power sufficient to stop the vehicle, but greater brake pedal pressure is required and brake pedal travel will be noticeably longer. Dealers will install a bracket and replacement ground wire to the sbc pump unit on all affected vehicles. Additionally, dealers will inspect and replace the ssc pump unit in certain sl models. The mercedes-benz recall numbers are 2005070007 and 2005110001. Research shows only 59% of the 100% required recall was done properly by an authorized dealer. This issue was not disclosed when I purchased this car and, the required work was not done and, mercedes said the 60 days from recall had passed - yet the reports sent to NHTSA by Mercedes Benz appears to be false data - this should be investigated.
