On my drive home from work on Friday 7/12/2013 at approximately 3:30 pm the airbag on the driver side deployed for no apparent reason. This was on a 1999 Mercury Cougar that my family purchased new. The VIN is 1zwht61l0x5665766. I called and spoke with aaron at Ford and he stated there was nothing Ford could do. He suggested I call my insurance company. . . I don't understand why my insurance company would be concerned with a flaw in a Ford product. I hope you will understand that I am scared to drive this car at this point. Will one of three remaining air bags deploy for no apparent reason? to be told to contact my insurance company is not acceptable. I am a very reasonable person but will not be taken advantage of. My expectation are simple: Ford needs to have this car towed to a dealer. The drivers side seat needs to be repaired or replaced. The entire air bag systems needs to be checked and brought up to a safe standard.

Cpsc: i1370321a. 1999 Mercury Cougar. Consumer stated while driving, the air bag on the driver side deployed for no reason.
Driving car to class last week, recently bought it within the past year. Was pulling into a parking spot in a parking garage going maybe 5 mph. Was creeping up into the spot and the airbags deployed out of nowhere, cracking my windshield and getting smoke and an awful smell into my car. I also will be wearing a wrist brace for the next 6 weeks due to an injury that the airbags caused.

My wife started the car and a split second later the passanger airbag prematurly deployed. It was the airbag in the passenger seat. I made an appointment for her hearing in her right ear because she is having problems. I called the Ford/Mercury manufacturer and they stated that there was nothing that they could do about it. I contacted the dealership which I bought the vehicle from and they stated there was nothing that they could do either. I dont know about you but I think that this is a major defect and would not want to hear or see anyone else have to go through this. I am just grateful that I gave my daughter a ride to school that morning.
While driving between 35 to 40 mph vehicle stalled. This caused loss of steering and brake power. Consumer lost the control of the vehicle, and was involved in a front end collision. Upon impact, neither of the air bags deployed.
On approx. The 15th of March, my daughter lost all power in car while driving through lunch traffic in town and was nearly rearended by a petroluem tanker. We brought car in to dealership. They ran a battery test and b/c that came back fine they refused to do any further testing. She was having problems getting the key to turn over to start car. They fixed that problem at the same time. On the 15th of may, the car came out of the shop for the 2nd time after it had lost power twice on her while driving again. Her. The dealership contacted Ford headquarters for recalls. None had been posted, but Ford said if they check the fuel filter at the bottem of the fuel tank we would probably find the problem with losing all power(braking, steering, ect. ) was that the filter was clogged therefore no gas was getting to the motor and thus this was why the car was losing power. They replaced the fuel pump and said that was a temporary fix for approx the next 3000 miles(for it was happening about every 3000 miles). And that we would have to bring the car in every 3000 miles to remain safe from losing power when it became clogged again. We decided that since Ford knew about the problem and refused to do a recall to fix the problem that anyone in my family who drove or rode in the car would be putting their life in danger so we tried to trade the car. The dealership wanted us to pay a $6,000 deficit so we decided to keep the car until we could complete the lemon law process. Three weeks later, my daughter stated she had got really bad gas mileage(15 miles took 1/4 of a tank she measured it) the day before and she was afraid that the car was going to lose power again. It was a Friday so the car couldn't go to the dealership til the following week. That night, the 6th of June. She lost brakes and steering while going around a curve. The car hit something in the ditch and rolled 1. 5x's to rest upside down. No airbags deployed. Seatbeat held her in car. Pictures of car and scene avail.
Faulty airbag module, causing light to illuminate, and airbag to malfunction. Dealer has inspected vehicle. The dealer replaced the air bag module but it failed again. The manufacturer was trying to change the defective module but has not issued a recall notice yet.
