Battery light is on and has for awhile. Lights keep blowing fuses. And today I had to rip out a headlight or the car would have set on fire.

Nhtsa campaign number:04v421000 manufacturer Ford motor company was driving on a main city st. My auto stopped with no power in the left lane of busy 4 lane st. Would not start in neutral or park, man pushed it into the ctr. Lane out of traffic area. Policeman came after I called 911, after a few minutes he suggested taking key out stepping on brake then inserting key back in ignition, did that and it started right up, and he followed me to my st. And I got safely home. Prior to this shut down incident it had stalled going down a hill however put it in neutral and it started up again. This incident could have caused a serious accident, prior to this incident it had been cutting out for a couple of months which I thought was cheap gas, so changed to tectron. I have called Ford on 3/15 twice and they said they can not do anything about it, I then researched this online and found this site and want to post exactly what happened to me as shown by the NHTSA on recall etc. It does show it is for the orig owner, I am the 2nd. Owner however this has occurred within the 15yr. Limitation you have posted for complaints explained to Ford that it may have taken this long for the filter to react in this manner.

I got in my car one day after work in the parking lot and started my car and my airbag light was on. It stayed on for three days and is no longer on. It seems like no one wants to take account or provide solutions for the problem. Everytime I roll up my windows, my lights dim as if the battery is dying. My windshield wiper control doesn't shut off and im not able to change the speed.

I have problem with transmmition shifting 1st to second changes at 3000rpm but when I change park to drive shakes motor bad , one of the wires start smoking I like I put tape around wired burnd. Temperature it doesn't show but when I open the hood the car is very hot every time I tried driving it at freeway overdrive light starts blinking I like I paid to get it fix and still does the same.
I was driving along hwy about 40 miles an hour when car engine stops. This stops power steering, brakes etc. To stop working and you have a hard time pulling off the road. Waited about 10 minutes and car cools down a little. It will then start up again and you can go again for about 1/2 mile or so and engine dies again.
To whom it may concern: (management) I was driving on a residential street and was honked at by another driver who told me that my brakes lights were not working. I had a friend of mine that is a certified repair person look at it and he said it wasnt the light or the fuse or the brake switch under the pedal and that he was 95% sure it was the stop lamp extension harness that has bronze terminals at the brake lamp switch connector. I bought this car in 2004 and under a recall had the blower switch resistor repaired under the recall. The reason the recalls for this car are not showing up is because the recalls are more than 15 years old & they dont keep track after that. I have never had this problem with this car before but I have had over $9,000 worth of repairs on it since ive owned it not including the normal oil changes and tune up. I think Ford needs to approve this for the recall considering they knew how many things were wrong with the Cougars and thats why they dont make them anymore. . . Not a satisfied customer with a Ford product! first & last Ford product I will ever own if this isnt fixed to my satisfaction. Thank-you, mary danks sunitwin10@aol. Com 608-381-8448.
Exterior lights not working ,replaced brand new and shut off again causing car to lock itself in park.

2000 Mercury Cougar v 6 auto -55000 mi - steady state cruising after 10 mi 'warm up' - a frequent , problem - like ok for 3 or 4 mile , then 2 or 3 times will jerk or shudder , then ok for 3 or 4 mi - hard jerk , engine tach jumps from 2800 > 4000 rpm , back to 2800. Seems mostly at steady 70 mph or so , does do it sometimes at 40. Seems hardly ever on short drive , like 8 mi to work in morning. Trans can't find correct gear ? computer ? dealer , aftermarket shop couldn't find anything. New fuel filter , trans oil.
I am not sure who to contact with this, but I have already gone through my insurance company, and I am still a little upset about what happened. I owned a Mercury Cougar 2dr coupe 2001. One night I was alerted by a neighbor that my car was on fire. My father started putting water on the car, and I used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out. My insurance company had a claims representative come out and check the vehicle. They already sent me a check for what they say the vehicle was worth, and I am just not happy about it. I know that Ford had issues with cars catching on fire. I just don't see how the insurance company can cut me a check for the vehicle, and determine a cause, with only pictures. My car still sits in my driveway 2 weeks after the accident. The car was sitting parked in the driveway for roughly 8 hours before it caught on fire. I just hate the fact that I am having to take a car I spent 13,000$ for, and now I get to buy something worth 6,700$. I was searching online to find more information about the vehicle fires, and also saw where it should be reported and that why I decided to write this. Thank you, seth goodowens.
There is an electrical issue that is effecting my vehicle. I have a v6 engine, and the instrument cluster, radio, interior lights, and head lights flicker when I start up my car and continue to do so. I went online to look at possibly recalls and saw that there was one decribing the exact issue I have. I called the Ford dealership in huntley, illinois and talked to a guy in the service department, named mike. He told me that the recall only affected certain Mercury Cougars from certain plants. . . . I am alson having issues with the transmission range sensor.
1. Car began to lose power and the steering wheel began to lock up and lights began flickering on the dash. 2. The car stalled in the fast lane on a busy freeway. The consequence was a small truck rear-ended the back of the car and it was totaled. One person had busted lip in truck and one in the car had busted forehead and blackened eyes with back injuries and the other one had back and stomach extreme pains and legs. 3. Nothing could be done at this point-the car always had problems. Too bad, I was not aware of all of the recalls--maybe that would not have helped either.
: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the engine stalls causing all the lights on the dash to illuminate. Additionally the speedometer, gas gauge and odometer become inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealership but because it was purchased as is they will not inspect it.
My daughter's car is having electrical problems. It is exactly as mentioned in NHTSA recall campaign 01v031000. The dealer won't fix the problem as a recall because is was supposedly fixed at the time of the recall before my daughter bought the car. It is a 2000 Mercury Cougar. Ford has told her it was repaired and what dealer repaired it in new jersey. She is in south carolina in college , and took vehicle to a dealer there. They said they didn't do recall repairs. She called the dealer in new jersey that Ford told her did the work, and they told her that sometimes recall work has to be redone, but the warranty was only for one year. I don't feel she should have to pay to have the work done if it is a known problem with Mercury Cougars, and her car was one that was included in that recall. I wish Ford could at least help her partially with the repairs. The recall said the car might catch on fire. I hope this never happens to her or anyone owning a Cougar.
Interior lights, headlights and gauges dim and brighten while the vehicle is being driven. On one occasion the consumer's wife couldn't see a curb due to the light flickering. As a result she ran over the curb which caused a flat tire and resulted in the vehicle running into a ditch.
I parked our 1997 Cougar in the driveway around 5:00p. M. On 07/15/05. I have not been having any problems with the car. About 1:00a. M. On 07/16/05, we were awaken by neighbors who had spotted the car on fire. The firemen said it appeared to be an electrical problem starting on the right side. Since it was totally burned, we don't know how to find out what happened. I e-mailed the Ford corporate & filled out the information including the VIN asking about a recall, but I have not received anything from them except the acknowledgement of receiving my e-mail.

The consumer owns a 1999 Mercury Cougar. The heater blower motor resister was replaced, because when the dashboard was pulled off it was burned. There was a recall for this, and the dealership stated that similiar to other vehicles that had been fixed. When contacting Ford, they stated this vehicle was not part of the recall. The motor switch would not work on one of the four speeds; therefore, the vehicle was taken into the dealership. This was first noticed on July 11, 2005.
6 months after I bought the car I noticed that after fueling that the fuel gauge still stayed on empty after a while it corrected itself but after that now everytime that I put fuel in the car it registers either empty or only half full. The dealership told me that Cougars are known for theri fuel pump problems. Upon further inspection of the car they stated that they could find nothing wrong and to watch and not overfill the tank. To this day the fuel gauge is still wrong. After that the paint on the hood of the car started peeling. I took it to the dealership and after some harsh words and weeks of waiting they took it in and repainted the hood which now is a slightly different color that the rest of the car. Then 6 months after that the car started hesitating on acceleration and would spit and splutter and quit in the middle of the road. I took it to the dealership and they put it on the machine and found that a component in the computer was out so they replaced it. Then one day as I was driving it my break pedal went almost all the way to the floor. I almost hit several cars trying to get it stopped I had it taken to a nearby garage and I had no break pads on the front or the back of the car also I had to have my rotors replaced( which is not covered by a warranty) however, there was no grinding no warning, nothing to indicate that a car with only 20,000 miles on it would have brake problems. After those were fixed I was driving to class one evening in heavy rush hour traffic and turned to into a parking lot my steering wheel immediately made this loud popping noise and locked to the left and sent me into a 360 degree spin into a crowded parking lot. I had the car towed to the dealership where it now sits unable to drive because the steering wheel and front wheels are locked to the left with no explanation of why it happened.
Recall 01v230000 concerning air conditioner heater blower motor resistor defect. The air conditioner blower and heater malfunctioned. Currently a recall was issued for this year/make, and model. However, after contacting the manufacturer, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.
2001 Mercury Cougar has stalled 5 times within a month and a half. Twice on the highway and 3 times idle. Car was completely shutting off without restarting and 2 computer chips were replaced due to Ford putting in a bad chip. Car is now stalling when going at slow speeds or stopped and has been in an independent shop 3 times within a 3 week period so the car is now stalling once a week. Brand new wires, throttle body, idle censor was replaced and it's still stalling. Spent a small fortune on rental cars, tow trucks and repairs. Ford's customer service said there was nothing that could be done. Will never ever buy an american car again!.
2001 Cougar stalls and looses power and wont restart until the next day only to stall again at any speed. Has been to Ford dealership 7 times and 2 independent garages. Dealership & garage cannot fix problem. Was almost hit twice from behind stalling on highway.
Car experiences engine misfire and will not start after driving thru a one inch deep puddle of rain water. Possible timing chain failure due to engine misfire caused by malfunction. Auto has 43,000 miles on it.
Headlight switch has shorted out many times. Local delarship knows the problem and I have had it replaced by a local shop three times. Fod had checked for electrical shorts and said they were all fine. Automatic transmision went out because the filter wasnt getting enough fluid because the filter wasnt close enough to the bottom of the fan

I've had to replace both the heater blower resistor (twice) and also the brake light switch. Summer of 2003. I bought this vehicle new, and was never notified of a recall. According to info gathered on this website - recalls were issued for both these problems. Why was I not notified?? who will repay me for labor and parts for these necessary repairs.
The vehicle experienced a problem with the electrical system as stated in recall #01v230000, however the vehicle identification number was not included.
The vehicle experienced the same defect as stated in recall 01 v 230 000, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
I have a 1999 Mercury Cougar. I took my car to my mechanic to find out what was wrong with my heater they told me before they did anything to contact Ford because there was a recall on my car for the same exact problem. I contacted Ford and they first told my that there was no recall. After I presented them with the recall numbers they then informed me that there was a such recall, but that my car would not be covered under the recall. On your web-site there is a section on the recall on the same year make and model as my car. It notes that 342,962 Mercury Cougars have been affected by this I don't understand how they can refuse to provide my with the recall also.
5 months after purchasing this Cougar, there was a huge power steering leak. Called around for someone to fix it, but dealer was the only choice. We were told it could be a bad pump and that would cost $450 to fix. They called back and said the whole gear was bad and had to be replaced and would cost us $700. We had no choice but complained to the dealer that rack and pinion gear should not go bad on a 2 year old car. We also contacted Ford customer relations, who did nothing to help us. We want our money back. Dealer also failed to notify us of 5 outstanding recalls on this car. Then, 2 days after picking it up from steering being fixed electrical system shorted out and stranded our 19 year daughter at 2 in the morning. This is directly related to one of the recalled items. The dealer should have fixed this during the 3 days when they had the car .
Remote will not work on trunk release nor will the release from the inside work. It has been checked out 3 times and always the same answer. Don't know why it won't open. Panel has been replaced, still will not open. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*734342.
While driving the vehicle stalled and lost all power, which almost caused an accident. Dealer cannot determine problem. Please provide details.

Vehicle was brought in for electrical problems several times.
Vehicle is experiencing many electrical problems, a mechanic stated in order to fix all the problems, the electrical harness and fire wall harness needed replaced, 9 radios have been replaced, vehicle locks on its own, speakers blurt in and out, gauges give false readings, sunroof would not open, air bag light, coolant light, and other function lights would illuminate and then go off, speedometer reads slower than what the vehicle feels, and the sensor that tells the vehicle the brakes were being applied was not working not allowing the vehicle to be put into gear.
Electrical system problems, radiator light on, the air bag light blinking, engine misfire light blinking, alarm system going off and not being able to stop it, just having to let time end the system, the problem with the system is intermittent and the dealership in not able to correct problem.
