10 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 07/03/2002

I purchased this vehicle which had 86,715 miles on it. Shortly after the purchase I noticed the engine would spark knock anytime the car was put under a load when the transmission was in high gear and in overdrive. Due to my schedule I did not take the car in for this problem until the drivers side window fell down while attempting to roll it down. After spending 741 dollars to repair those problems I drove the car approximately 50 miles and steam came from under the hood. The car was towed back to the dealer. The dealer evaluated the problem and advised me that the intake manifold was broken. I was advised the repair cost was $893. 75 including towing. Iwas advised by both the dealer and the Ford customer service line 1-800-392-3673 that there was no recall or warrenty for this problem. By finding this web site I have found 16 other simular conplaints.

13 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 05/24/2002

Ford motor company recognizes several vehicles affected by this condition, including the crown victoria, mustang, Lincoln town car, and Mercury cougar, all with the 4. 6l engine built with a plastic intake manifold, yet Ford refuses to acknowledge the Grand Marquis. Fortunately, our experienced failure occurred at a low speed (approximately 20-25 miles per hour) as my wife was driving into our subdivision. However, the amount of steam (which she immediately thought was "smoke") caused her to panic and nearly flee the vehicle. Had this occurred at highway speeds in traffic, this failure surely could have caused a potentially harful, even fatal incident. Ford has admitted the failure, but evidently does not consider it of noteworthy concern for most vehicles equipped with this popular and widely used engine package. (see Ford document #97m91) it is frustrating that they are unwilling to correct the problem, especially since it is a known and acknowledged defect with the engine in question. This is a costly and potentially harmful, if not potentially life-threatening defect. The super-heated steam produced by the rupture at the top of the engine (right behind the fan, no less) billowed out in a plume of steam that made road-vision nearly impossible, not to mention causing a definitely distracting panic situation! I have contacted Ford, including my local dealership (moyer Ford, foley alabama), their custuomer service "hotline" and jonathan grimm at Ford whq. All have repeated the mantra, "we're sorry, but we can't do anything for you in this situation. " on the internet, I have found numerous similar complaints, and a local mechanic has stated that he has had to replace a number of the plastic manifolds as well. I feel this is a potentiall serious problem that Ford is willing to ignore! I want to call attention to this matter for the potential safety of others, as well as to reclaim the costs of repairing an admitted defect in Ford's design and manufacturin.

14 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 05/18/2002

Intake manifold required replacing. It had split across the front seam causing antifreeze to spill all over the engine. Our VIN number is not on the recall list even though others of the same make are. The split was across the front seam of the plastic manifold. New ones have aluminum liners in them, which makes me believe that the company knows that it`s a current problem.

15 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

21 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/25/2002

While driving along a busy city street on a cold evening in January I noticed a cloud of steam behind me. It obscured my view of traffic behind me and their view of my vehicle. After pulling of the right-of-way, and examining the engine compartment, I recognized cooling system failure but was unable to identify the source of the problem. It was later determined that the "plastic" intake manifold had ruptured and sprayed coolant all over the engine cmpartment, and hot exhaust manifold, etclocal Ford dealers were closed and unavailable. Reputable auto repair garage performed the necessary repairs (6 hrs) this critical engine component should "never" fail. Ford quietly recalled police, fleet and emergency vehicles. Consumers were left to fend for themselves. They have ignored my request for financial assisstance.

22 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

24 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 11/13/2001

The intake manifold on my vehical is the same that is on any 4. 6ltr engine that Ford has put into production in the years prior to 1998. When Ford went to a casted manifold. I know they have had several failures of this part. Even the local dealership parts man said that this part should be recalled. That tells me that they have had a high percentage of failures of this manifold. But instead the consumer has to put out around 500 dollars, to repair a defective part. Is there any recourse for this type of problem. I noticed several of the same complaints in your listing of failures.

25 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 11/03/2001

Air intake plenum developed a crack which in turn sprayes coolant onto the rear of the alternator. I know there are many problems with this part but Ford will not replace it. There is a limited recall on this part but it begins less than 4 months after the build date on my car, even though the problem described exists on many earlier models. I would like my car included in this recall but am told no way by Ford. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

26 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 09/05/2001

27 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 06/26/2001

My primary complaint is the stress crack on the intake manifold. This is a known problem by Ford, and has been the subject of a recall program for their fleet vehicles only. The coverage is for 7 years from the vehicles warranty start date, with no mileage limitation. It covers the intake manifold for 4. 6 l sohc engines on 1996-2001 crown victoria police vehicles, certain 1998 through 2001 crown victoria taxis and certain 1998-2001 Lincoln town cars, all using the same intake manifold as that on my Grand Marquis (same part number, same part!). The recall program is 01m02. The stress crack caused complete coolant loss and overheating of the engine at highway speeds and the release of coolant onto the windshields of following vehicles. In addition, the reel-type electric window system in the car fails in more than normal fequency. I have had three failres in the past two years.

28 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 05/05/2001

While accelerating onto freeway, noticed coolant odor; watched heat gauge carefully and drove to mechanic. Plastic intake manifold had cracked across the front and all collant was lost. Costly repairs followed. I have written to the Ford motor CO. And requested reimbursement. Have not heard from them at this time.

Failure Date: 01/15/2001

When driving no more than a block consumer noticed temperature gauge go up. Also, steam was coming from engine compartment, all coolant was lost. Consumer contacted dealer. Dealer noticed intake manifold needed replacing. The consumer states similar year and models had a recall and this vehicle should be included.

33 Carburetor problem of the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/02/2001

Intake manifold is plastic and has the potential to melt. Consumer is concerned that this could eventually cause other problems to occur, such as engine over heating. There are stress cracks where the alternator is attached to plastic manifold. The dealer informed consumer that the defective part should be under recall but it wasn't. At first, Ford stated they would pay for the part, however they have now declined. This is a saftey hazard as smoke emits from the engine area obstructing the view of the driver.

34 Carburetor problem of the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis
