When the gas gauge registers below 1/2 tank, and the tank is refueled to capacity, it takes several miles driving( approx. 30-50 miles) for the gauge to register full. Also, if the tank is towards the empty mark, and the car is filled to capacity, and he car is driven, the low fuel light will come on, and say on for an extended period of time. At times, before the car is driven, the car refuses to start as if it is not getting any gas. After it sets for a while, it will start.

The empty fuel tank was consumed with gasoline. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer and they stated that this was a common issue with no available remedy. : the contact stated after hearing there was a manufacturer's offer to replace the gasoline storage tank on police vehicles due to a risk of fire in the event of a rear end collision, the vehicle was taken to a dealer. Although the vehicle displayed no prior problems or had any existing failures, the contact instructed the service department to replace the fuel tank storage assembly. The consumer wanted to know why he had to pay for service when the police vehicle were being repaired for free. Updated 02/27/06. Updated 4/6/2006 - the gas tank was not replaced. A gas tank protection shield was installed in police cars free of charge. The consumer was upset because he had to pay to have one installed in his vehicle.

Recall request for a steel shield built behind the gas tank on 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. .
Today was the third time that I have refueled the car and have noticed that there is a strong gas smell when I park the car in the garage. I have looked with a flash light under the car (left rear below the tire rim) and I see gas dripping out of where a tubing connects to the fuel tank. This is a rapid drip that leaves a puddle on the floor. I have been cautious to not "over-fill" and still the problem persists.

Fuel gauge hung on full.
Fuel tank developed a crack, causing fuel to leak almost directly above the exhaust pipe . Dealer replaced fuel tank 3 times, defect is still occurring. Crack is always leaking in the same location.
There is a concern about the safety of the gas tank and the similarity to the Ford crown victoria's with their rear end accidents, resulting in a vehicle fire.
