5 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 11/26/2018

The car was stationary. The right blinker started blinking faster than usual. Then the headlights went out. After searching on line I discovered recall 15s39. The problem is the "lcm" lighting control module. I took the car to penske Ford (alex uribe) in chula vista. They said they had the part but they lied. They kept my car 5 days, never called me regarding status, I called them on the 5 th day and I was told my car was modified and they could not fix it. I explained it was previously secret service car that's why it had additional wiring. Told me I had to remove the wired before they could fix or he could do it for $135 hr. And it would take 5 to 6 hours. I refused. How did the interceptors get repaired or were they not included in the recall? the more I search on line I"m finding the dealers don't want to do the repair because it's too labor intensive. If that's the case what recourse do I have? I have no headlights, no taillights and no dash lights. When I picked up my car they told me "we got your headlights to work, but they could go out anytime" great! I can't drive at night and I'll probably get a ticket for no tail lights. I called Ford but the person in the phillipines couldn't grasp what I was saying. Is there no u. S. Customer service? help please.

10 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 08/22/2015

After driving to mall my daughter realized that my head lights were not on. Checked all fuse (under dash and under hood). None were blown. Realized that had no dome light but did have map/reading lights. No tail lights or brake lights except third brake lights. Had brights if I held high beam lever. Had car towed to shop. Was told that it was the light control module (lcm). Was told that Ford had and extended warranty on this part. Took it to Ford dealer. They said that it was only for the 2003-2005 models and that my car was not covered. I think they should extend this warranty to the the 2002 models seeing that this is a common problem with earlier models and not just the 2003-2005 models. It is probably the same part.

12 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

The issue described in pe08066 happened to me last night. While driving at approx 50 mph my headlights tuned off spontaneously. Luckily I had other cars in front and behind me and could still see the road because of their lights. My turn signal functioned when I signaled I was pulling over, and it appeared my side markers were still on (yellow glow off cars around me). I do not know if my tail lights were still on. I turned my headlight dial from automatic to manual headlights, and there was no difference. Then, my headlights came back on spontaneously. They were out for a total for 10-15 second. This is very dangerous.

While driving at night, the headlights will suddenly go out. Tail lights and other lights continue to work. I do not know what makes them come back on some time later. 17 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

Description of the complaint: lcm known defect: both headlights failed, in both dim and high-beam positions. They will not come on in either the automatic or manual dashboard switch positions. (the bulbs are still good. ) the parking lights, turn signals, tail lights, and brake lights continued to function. This happened at night. It should be obvious that this failure will *always* occur at night, or during stormy weather, threatening safety, because headlights are not normally used during the daytime. Later testing revealed the problem to be intermittent. At one point, the automatic dashboard switch position worked for both dim and high-beams, but the manual switch position did not work. The next morning, both the automatic and manual positions worked. When the problem first occurred, neither position would work. This intermittent problem is consistent with a large number of complaints and reports for the 2003-2005 model years, and the problem is the lighting control module. This module is so unreliable that it has been named the "lights out module" on the internet. . Read more...

18 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

As I was driving the headlights went completely off, switched to manual, worked for a few minutes, then went off again. Tried turning car off and back on, no lights, had to hold dimmer switch forward to get lights. This has happened numerous times since the first one. Now not even holding the dimmer switch forward always works. Today we were stopped because tail lights were out (driver was holding dimmer switch forward). Tail lights also flicker at times when headlight goes out and control panel flickers too. We have gone to local independent repair service and are having difficulty getting control module due to large back order. So what are we to do in the meantime? this is extremely dangerous to those in the car and others on the road. I understand recalls are ewhen there is a dangerous situation, and this definitely qualifies! so we now own a car that we can't drive whenever headlights are needed, which is very limiting. So far I have not been able to get hold of Ford directly to complain about this. We are not the original owners, but that should not matter on such a serious issue! this complaint is about a 2005 Grand Marquis.

20 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

This is the second time the lcm has, without warning, failed. The first time, while driving along us1 after dark, all lights - headlights, tail lights, and dashboard light - went off!! there were no street lights and cars could not see us from behind and we could not see where we were going! we were terrified. Our lives were at stake as we anxiously and extremely slowly made our way home. The repair was outrageously costly. And, of course, we were restricted to driving only in sunny daylight hours as lights are required when raining. Now, this has happened again. The car has been taken to the local Ford dealer. However, although the part has been ordered for over 10 days, there is no word as to when it will be available and we are about to take a four-day trip! we have contacted the Ford motor CO. About this problem, both by phone and by email, and all they can say is that it needs to be fixed. Excuse me! this is a life and death issue!!! we could have been killed on the highway due to a faulty lcm! in all our years we have never had this happen with any other car. We have read in several blogs that there are defective modules being used - yes, from Ford motor CO. ! does there need to be a highway death due to this defect before Ford will acknowledge this problem and replace this part at their expense?? updated ivoq 12/19/12.

21 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 08/29/2010

Headlights went out while driving the vehicle. This was on a dark, dark, 2 lane country road with little or no shoulder. Using the high beam "hold" function light would come on high beam. Working switches would not bring lights back on. Checking lights later, found lights would go out within 5 mins - stay out for less than 5 mins and then repeat. Repair was the lcm module which dealer charged aprox. $700 to fix. Very dangerous and scary! tail lights did stay on.

22 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that the headlights and tail lights were inoperable while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who inspected the failure and stated that the headlight control module failed and needed to be replaced. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

23 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

Facts: I own a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis that had total headlight failure while driving 55 mph. Although I ran off the road I was able to recover with no damage/injury/loss of life because I was familiar with the road/the car/and sadly, previous experience with total headlight failure in a previous vehicle (2001 Dodge durango). Once I stopped I checked all obvious things for failure (battery/fuses/etc) but soon realized I had parking lights/turn signals/side marker lights/dash lights/tail lights/and even brake lights. . . Everything except headlights. I tried the high-beam position and no luck there either - until I pulled the multi-function switch toward the steering wheel to the "flash" the high-beam position. I continued to hold the switch in this position and drive with my high-beams on for the few miles I had left to my destination. Once home I turned vehicle off gathered my test equipment and began my troubleshooting just to find out that now everything worked as advertised. That held true for approx. 1500 miles or about 2 months (with initial failure at approx 31,000 miles) when headlights failed again; and now they even fail intermittently at any time to include daylight hours. My troubleshooting revealed the lighting control module (lcm) is the cause of failure, but more importantly, my investigation revealed this is a known failure. . . By literally hundreds of people. . . To include you people of the NHTSA. My analysis tells me that the failure is probably not miles related but more likely usage related since my 31+ years (and counting) in the military taught me to drive with my headlights on 24/7/365 in the see and be seen philosophyadd the fact that I currently have 34,000 miles where most have a lot more. Opinion: a 3rd grader could have done the research to identify this is a serious problem and an 8th grader could make the decision to recall the cars for total headlight failure. If you can't - take your loved ones for a ride in my car at night!!!.
