1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2023

I have been intermittently losing power steering. The code is b1342. After researching, it looks like Ford is aware of this problem but is unwilling to fix the issue. This fix must be done at a dealership since it is a software issue and going to cost $2,000. Obviously losing power steering when going at fast speeds is incredibly dangerous for myself and others. There is no check engine light that comes on when the issue arises.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2018

I was driving around 40 mph and a light in my dash the symbol of a wrench appeared ,then my SUV I lost power going forward , it seemed the engine shut down , I was able to get off the road in very bad traffic with out getting into an accident . The traffic was very heavy and the SUV was very hard to control with out power.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

I am getting continual throttle body errors on my 2009 Mariner. It goes into low power mode so I can "limp home". It happens mostly on highways when I need to "punch it" and get alot of acceleration.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

Test driving vehicle and I could not accelerate. Dealer said he would fix problem.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

On 1/1/2016 I was driving on 495 w in queens, NY heading back to manhattan where I live. Out of nowhere the car began jerking, a wrench light on the dash panel came on (which I never saw before) and I could tell the car was decelerating. I tried hitting the accelerator again, the car would jerk, the engine was revving but was barely moving. I knew I had to pull over and luckily I was able to navigate to the shoulder of the road. This was an extremely dangerous situation. I am a confident driver, however, a less confident or timid driver most likely would have panicked and gotten into a potentially serious collision.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2015

While driving down the road anywhere from 20-55 mph, the car seems to stall out and the accelerator no longer works. You have to pull over and shut the vehicle off and it will start again. Sometimes the same problem will occur again within seconds, minutes, or days later.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2015

Normal driving when suddenly there was no acceleration & the wrench light came on in the dashboard. Car was running but there was no acceleration & idled roughly. Mechanic put a diagnostic on it which read p2112 throttle control actuator system stuck closed. Binding throttle body stuck closed. There was no warning and the incident was very scary since I could not get out of the way of traffic. The car would go about 1mph until I was able to pull off the road. When the car was later shut off and restarted, acceleration returned. This is frightening as you do not know when it could happen and could cause a serious accident.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

I was driving at 45mph when all of a sudden, the car stop running. I had to pull over and cut the car off. I started the car again and it went about one mile before it cut off again. Then a wrench symbol came on the left side dash board. I drove the car home and it cut off on me three times before I could get it home. I look in my car book to see what the wrench symbol means and it says that it is the throttle control/powertrain.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2014

I was traveling down the interstate at approx. 70 mph when suddenly, I felt a jolt. At this time, I lost power upon depressing the pedal. I slowly moved to the emergency lane and stop the vehicle. A wrench tool illuminated on the instrument panel. I then turned the vehicle off. I was able to restart the vehicle. As I proceeded to continue on my route, as I was accelerating, approx. 25 - 30 mph, the incident repeated if self. This occurred about 4 times before I realized that I could only drive about 15 - 20 mph in order to keep this condition from occurring again. I was only about 4 miles from home, so I proceeded to drive home very slowly.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

While driving, the vehicle started losing power and the wrench light came on; stopped and had a hard time cranking but was able to go on. 2nd time pulling onto a busy street, same incident, able to get to center lan and recrank this time surging forward but gained control and went on, very unnerving situation, scared to drive long distances.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

I was driving my 2009 Mercury Mariner and suddenly lost the ability to accelerate. A wrench light illuminated on my dash and the only thing I could do was coast to a stop. Pushing the gas pedal did nothing. I was able to very slowly get the car to a parking lot (it moved at an idle speed, but would not accelerate otherwise). When I got to the parking lot, I turned the car off. After waiting a few minutes, I turned the car back on and it seemed fine. I took it to a Ford dealership and they diagnosed it as being a problem with the throttle body, which they ended up replacing. This issue occurred on 12/10/2013 on a 2009 Mercury Mariner that I purchased new in November of 2008. It had approximately 69,000 miles on it when the incident occurred. I was driving at a speed of about 40 mph when it happened. In searching the internet, I found that this is a very common problem. There are numerous news reports, forum and blog postings, and youtube videos of people experiencing the same problem with the throttle body on their escapes and Mariners. I also feel that it is a safety issue. Had I been on the highway when this occurred, I very likely would've caused an accident. (I was actually just about to enter the highway when this incident occurred. ).

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

Car had problems with lagging during acceleration. I was driving to the bank and the car completely stopped responding to the gas pedal. A wrench light popped up as well as check engine light. Had to pull over because my car would no longer accelerate and quickly stopped moving. I was told by mechanic it was the throttle body.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

I was driving and all of a sudden I lost power. There was jerking in the transmission.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

The 2009 Mercury Mariner has an issue that occurs while operating the vehicle. The problem occurred when power was cut off from the acceleration, the wrench symbol on the dashboard illuminated (which indicates a powertrain/throttle control problem), and I was only able to coast the vehicle to park. The vehicle never gave any indication that there was a problem until the wrench lit up and the accelerator stopped working. It started a week ago and has happened a total of 3 times since (with minimal driving). Once the problem happens and I stop the car, I am able to put it in park, turn the car off, start it back up, and drive again like nothing happened. This is a very unusual problem and looking online, I see it may be a common one.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

Car lost power and stopped while driving. Engine light came on then went off.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2013

The vehicle suddenly lost power as I was traveling down the highway. The "wrench" warning light came on indicating a powertrain fault and thankfully I was able to pull over to the side of the road before it died completely.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2013

2009 Mercury Mariner. I had just pulled into the store parking lot the car was in park but running. When all of a sudden it cut off lights on dash board came on. . . I was able to restart the car on the way home every stop light I stopped at the car would cut off. . . Took to auto repair shop they diagnosted it but nothing came up on machine. Car ran fine for the rest of the day. On the way to work that Monday the car stop in the middle of the road I was able to coast over the wrench icon lite came on. Cut the car off started it back up and drove to work. . . . Now the car is doing it every 5-10 miles stopping wont let me accelerate and the wrench icon is coming on. . . . This is very dangerous. . . . . . This needs to be recalled. If everyone is having the same problem. . . . . .

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

This actually first occurred on Friday. I was traveling on the thruway at about 65mph when the car felt almost like it downshifted and then I totally lost acceleration and the wrench light appeared on the dash. I limped to the side of the road and the car jerked and sputtered before I shut it off. After a few minutes I restarted the vehicle and it sounded like it was flooded at first then it turned over normally. I was an hour from home and made it back without further incident. I took it to the dealer the next morning and it did not show any codes. They suggested I replace the purge valve, and as I had a busy week of work related travel scheduled I went ahead and had them do it for $120. Better safe than sorry. Right? today I get an hour from home and it happens again. I call my dealer and they suggest I find the closest Ford dealer and take it there immediately. Closest Ford dealer couldn't take me for 2 weeks!! I was an hour from my destination, so I decided to chance it. I drove about 20 minutes and it happened again. Same exact scenario. I started it again, got back on the road and drove 10 minutes and again, except this time the engine light also came on. I called roadside assistance and was towed to a garage. I am 2 1/2 hours from home and driving a rental. Garage will diagnose and hopefully fix tomorrow. Service tech said if he had to diagnose without a code he would say throttle body! it also sounds like this is not covered by my 5 year/60k warranty either. With all of the similar stories I have read online Ford needs to be forced to do a recall and reimburse us all for our expenses.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2013

2009 Mercury Mariner with about 90,000 miles. Was on the freeway driving about 65-70 mph when suddenly the power to car cut off - was not able to accelerate vehicle; drove to right side of the road. Car was still on, but gas pedal would not work, wrench light was on, car idling very roughly. Turned car off. Turned car back on, wrench light was off, drove another 30 minutes to destination without incident. In the two hour drive home, the car cut off five more times. I heard a bell alert audio sound a few times, but the only light that came on was the wrench just as the power cut off. The very last time it happened, the engine light came on, and stayed on even after restarting the car. I feel very thankful to have got home alive and without getting into an accident. Dealer recommends a 90m service package ($547), a diagnostic test ($104), and possibly a throttle body and/or sensor ($300-ish).

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

The vehicle has stalled while in motion 6 times now, while stopped 3 times. Stalled once while driving upwards of 40mph. I had to stop in the middle of the street, put emergency blinkers on, and restart the car. Vehicle seems to spontaneously falter in acceleration and loses power. Turning off ignition and restarting engine fixes the problem but it will then reoccur at an unknown time. Some incidences have been in the same day, others have been up to a week apart.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

Driving along and unexpectedly engine goes in limp mode with no warning and no acceleration- extremely dangerous as was driving on expressway when this occurred.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled on several occasions with the illumination of the check engine light. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. Kmj.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2013

On expressway, my vehicle went into lim home mode. It continually did this, so I had my vehicle towed to the auto shop. The mechanic said that this is a common problem with my year vehicle and you folks are looking into this issue. Hopefully you will recall it.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2013

Car suddenly started to loose power and reduce speed to about 20 mph. Then ideled very, very rough - close to shutting down. Sat for a while restarted it up and could not get it past 20 mph. Ended up taking it to dealer next day and they looked into it. Took apart the throttle actuator and cleaned it. Worked fine for about a month, but today experienced the same problem. Had to have it towed to repair shop and we are still trying to figure out what to do about it.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2013

I was driving through a town and the car cut out and lost all power. I steered it off the road safety. It restarted just fine and I took off again going four blocks were it died instantly in the middle of the road. It is now in the shop to figure out what caused stalling in the car, and then allowing it to restart and continue down the road. Very unsafe with traffic behind me and oncoming to be stalled on a curve on the road.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2013

As my daughter was driving on the freeway, the engine suddenly lost power and she had to work her way to the side across 3 lanes of heavy traffic with no power. Our mechanic replaced the throttle body at our expense. The news today indicated that you were investigating the circuit board which controls the throttle and we wanted you to know that this problem was a threat to her safety and appears to be occurring to many people. This was the fourth time the vehicle has stopped while driving.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2012

After coming to a stop at a light or stop sign, as I accelerate my car jumps/jerks as if it's straining to switch to next gear. Generally happens when accelerating between 10-40 miles. When it initially started it would happen 1-2 times a week. Now it happens every day. I have an appointment schedule to have dealer look at vehicle.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2012

While entering interstate highway, engine balked like bad gas. After two or three tankfuls and the vehicle dying in traffic, I left it with my dealer to find the problem. After a week, the vehicle had not died for them so I brought it home, only to continue with the same dying and hesitating when accelerated. A month or so later the dealer kept it again for about 5 days and it still did okay for them. They have no idea what the "problem" is. We have parked the car in our garage because several times we have narrowly escaped being rear-ended, when turning corners, crossing railroad tracks, etc. I contacted Ford motor CO. In michigan and they do not "have this problem with other vehicles" and don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Mechanics in two other garages have driven the vehicle and have not located the problem. Help!!.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

The vehicle suddenly accelerated and then slowed down rapidly. Pulled over and put car in park and turned it off. Called my uncle who is a mechanic and was not to sure as to what could have happened since he was not there. Started car and reved the engine to see if anything unsafe happend. Car seemed ok and was able to drive it home. Mechanic looked at it the next day but could not find anything wrong he said or duplicate the problem.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that the transmission would shift hard when up shifting or downshifting. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that there was nothing wrong with the transmission, but that the power train control module needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 59,000 and the current mileage was 78,000.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2011

On multiple occasions starting in Jan 2011, the vehicle would hesitate to select a gear and accelerate while trying to leave a stop light or sign, or after making a turn leaving a few second lull where the vehicle is unresponsive. The previous transmission software re-flash was performed again even though dealer was unable to replicate problem. Issue still persists occasionally, as well as a new symptom since March (23,000 miles). Now, sometimes when coming to a stop the vehicle will stall as though the transmission did not downshift to a lower gear. Placing the vehicle in neutral and restarting allows continued operation. These issues combined with inconsistency in shifting performance as noted by many others lead me to believe there is still a component and/or software problem with this 6f35 transmission. However, since the problem cannot be consistently replicated by the dealer they are unsure of a remedy.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

Update to 01/30/13 complaint. I purchased car on 10/22/12 with 58,398 miles from a dealer. I started having issues late December 2012. I was having problem with car jerking into gear or being sluggish when accelerating. I took car to dealer on 01/29/13. Researched carfax information and found out that on 01/05/10 - transmission flushed and stated as replaced. 18,588 miles. 08/09/10 - transmission was removed to replace cooler. 28,372 miles. On 01/29/13 mechanic advised that transmission was leaking badly and that "press regulator valve sticking". 01/30/13 - transmission valve body replaced. 63,356 miles. 6 weeks after valve body replaced car started jerking again. Took car to dealer on 03/18/13. . . Dealer suggested replacement of transmission, but extended warranty company said no. . . Would only pay for transmission rebuild. 65,951 miles. This entailed day and half of dealer/warranty company haggling over repairs. Mechanic began work on 03/21/13 and found lots of melted plastic that he had to remove. Transmission work completed on 03/23/13 but repair revealed starter problem. Dealer currently waiting on approval from warranty company to repair starter. Mechanic advised if starter not repaired will cause fly wheel problem. Mechanic is annoyed that transmission is having problems so soon after 2010 "repairs" and that warranty company refused to replace transmission.
