1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2025

Me and my wife purchased a vehicle from a private seller to use for personal commute. A month later we started to notice more issue were occurring with the car then stated from the seller. I took it to an auto body shop to get it inspected and possibly serviced and upon that inspection the clerk stated that there was a milage adjustment done to the vehicle. We contacted the seller to try and return the vehicle and receive our money back, but the dealer refused and requested us to resell it.

2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2022

When the weather is hot (close to 100 degrees or more) and I am driving with the a/c - my vehicle on 3 occasions will not start after parking the vehicle and trying to restart it. The red padlock sign blinks and it won't start. At first it is trying to turnover but then will continually sound worse and all other warning lights go haywire. I leave the car alone for half a day and it starts up again like nothing happened. On the fourth occasion, the car stopped while driving, just a quiet shutdown and the car glided. This time it did not work for over 24 hours and then started up again like nothing happened. Multiple mechanics and also the dealership cannot figure out the problem because by the time I have it towed to shop, it works again. They did a full check on the car and cannot find anything wrong and there were no diagnostic codes. This issue happens when the weather is hot and poses a safety concern as now it is shutting off while driving and I become stranded each time. (first incident happened 8/25/18, last incident 5/14/22) total of 4.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2022

My vehicle has been running out of gas extremely quick. It also leaks underneath when I am pumping gas into the Mariner. I am having a loud thunking sound underneath the vehicle an when I let off the accelerator, my car slowly comes to a hault. My power steering went out one day also without warning. I can't figure the problem out except I seen a recall for the power steering module or some sort that has malfunctioned an causes the computer to erase the power steering sensor completely clean of it's existence. Please help!.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2021

I was driving when it felt like the vehicle was reving in park then the "wrench" icon appeared on my dash. I went a couple blocks & my vehicle felt like it wasn't shifting automatically as it should. I pulled over & turned it off. It started right back up with no lights on, I went half a block & stopped at a stop sign but while stopped the engine reved up. I was worried I was going to be in an accident. Then the "wrench" light came back on, since I was close to home I figured I'd just try to get home. About another block, the check engine light came on & was making strange noises. I kept my vehicle at about 5-10 mph & got it home. My car was very jerky.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Mariner. While driving approximately 50 mph, an unknown wrench warning indicator illuminated. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. After waiting a few moments, the vehicle restarted. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2016

While driving normally suddenly it looses power and throttles before turning off. It is a hazard because I may be hit if it happens in the freeway.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Mariner. While driving at approximately 45 mph, the maintenance warning light illuminated and the vehicle jerked violently. In addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who inspected the vehicle but was unable to diagnose the failure. After leaving the dealer, the maintenance and the engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,980.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2015

The car would not accelerate and the wrench symbol illuminated. I had to pull over turn off the car and restart it.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

During normal driving on the highway the engine lost power, the wrench light on the dash lit. The vehicle sputtered and suddenly decreased in speed, making for hazardous driving conditions. I moved to the side of the 4 lane highway and into the breakdown lane. I placed the vehicle in park, the engine idled roughly. I turned off and restarted the car and the symptoms were gone. A week later the same trouble returned. Please press fmc to resolve at no-cost to consumer the obvious and dangerous manufacture defect with a recall on the affected parts/system.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2014

Was going home from work, about 20 mph, car sputtered and stopped accelerating on ramp, engine and wrench light came on. This had happened before so I knew to turn the car off and back on to get my car to work again. But alas, I am driving at about 30 mpg for only 2 minutes and it happens again! I was again on another ramp, completely blocking traffic. Thank god I was not yet on I-95 going at a high speed, or even worse with my child in the car. If I ever get in an accident with my child and we are injured because of this, my family will sue the heck out of Ford. Has to call my husband to drive the car to the dealer after I pulled off the road, I was shaking too bad to drive.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2014

Twice in two days while speeding up to get on highway my Mariner looses complete power and the wrench light comes on. Lucky for me it was just before I was turning on to merge. Seconds later it would have been a serious accident, due to the sudden stop. I had to shut the car off and start it back up in order to get going again. After reading #pe13003 has been file for the same exact problem with same make and model. Someone better react before someone looses a life. This is horrible.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

I suffered an accident because while driving in a highway, I could not steer the wheel and the engine stop working. I wrote before because of what happened and have not received an answer. What can I do? thank you.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2013

Was at stop light completely stopped. When the light turned green, I stepped on the accelerator and my car did not accelerate. The engine light and another light came on. I tried multiple times to move the car and nothing happened. I powered my car down and restarted it, at this time the car started moving again when I pressed on the accelerator.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2013

While driving in heavy traffic in center lane of three line highway. Vehicle suddenly lost power creating a emergency situation. I had to force traffic to allow me proceed to side of the road. Endangering myself and my family, I sat for about 30 min. Before I could move the vehicle.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

My wife was driving in town and the car began to "buck" and slow down. After a few minutes the accelerator had no effect on the engine. It appeared to be idling only. She pulled off the road and stopped the car, waited a10 minutes or so, and started it again. There was no difficulty starting the car, but again the accelerator had no effect on the engine speed. We had the car towed to the local dealership where it was diagnosed with a bad throttle body and throttle motor. The repairs cost approximately $500.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2013

When driving at a slow speed of 20-25 mph, the vehicle stopped accelerating and bucked a little. The wrench (powertrain) signal light up on the dash, so I proceeded to pull over, put the car in park, and shut it off. After a few minutes I turned it on again and all seemed fine, though the car was now slow moving and less smooth through shifting. The same thing occurred 9 days later, with the vehicle responding even more slowly afterwards.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

Driving to work on 1431, the car felt as though it hit a bump, lost all ability to drive. Pulled over to side of road, turned car off for about 10 to 15 seconds and then back on. At this point it seem to operate properly. Then about threee miles down the road it did the same thing again. This time there was no shoulder to pull off on, so traffic was tied up. Was traveling at about 40 mph this time. Did the same thing, turned off and then back on and seemed to work normal. Later that evening going home from work the car did the same thing, two more times before I reached home. One time as I was going from palmer to 1431 on a curve. The next time it was on a slight incline going home. The icon on dashboard was a wrench which indicates it had something to do with the throttle control. Took to dealer and they confirmed it was a defective throttle control unit, and charged $650 to repair. Beleieve that this is/was a serious problem safety wise and should have been covered by Ford.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2013

We were traveling down the highway at 60 mph when the engine went dead like the switch was cut off. I tried to restart the engine and it would try to start then go dead. I did this 10 times and it finally started. I took it directly to the local Ford dealer. A computer check did not show any problem. The dealer said he did not know what to work on and said to return it when it happens again.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2013

I was leaving a soccer game and the car went to about 40 mps and the wrench light came on and the pedal went limp. I pulled over and stopped the car and the car started shaking like it was out of time. I put it in part and shut off the car when I turned the car back on the light was off. I was able to drive 20 miles back and forth and then it did the same thing again. I have taken it to run the codes and there were none. Today 8/31/13 it did the same thing again and now finally the engine light came on. Codes were ran at autozone and p1212 throttle body sensor finally showed up. I had already checked the web the first time that it did it after talking with a mechanic that works at Ford and he told me what it was and that there was no recall. I am very upset. I just purchased this car less than three months ago!!! single mom someone help!!!.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

On several occasions the vehicle would suddenly loose power from highway speeds and limp to the side of the road. A light would come on that looked like a wrench. Once the vehicle was stopped and restarted I was able to move on normally until the next episode which began to come more frequently. After the first incident I immediately went to my Ford dealer and spoke to someone in service who told me they could hook the car up to the computer but since the wrench light went out it would most likely show nothing and I would have to pay $100 for this service. I have an extended warranty with a $100 deductible that was going to run out in 400 miles. I have the vehicle in right now and they just called and told me the throttle body needs to be replaced and it is not covered under the extended warranty and will cost me over $500.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2013

I had just gotten back from a long trip, and was stopped at a red light - I barely accelerated once it turned green, and the car lost complete and total power, in the middle of the intersection. A wrench light came on. No throttle was working as much as I pressed down. The car kept snail pacing until I got to an empty parking lot where I turned the vehicle off. I turned it back on and it reved itself, so I turned it back off. Turned it back on and all of a sudden it worked again. I took it to the dealer who claimed it was the "electronic throttle body" failing and charged me $98 for the diagnostic. I decided for a second opinion, and they took everything apart to see if it was something else since the car is only 3 years old and only has 30,000 miles on it. After much testing they concluded it was in fact the "electronic throttle body," and the repair cost me $595. Before this happened, 2 or 3 days prior, I felt the car was losing power and it was hard to get it to go at it's v6 potential. Car still hesitates and feels like the engine jumps out when it stops and moves again. . . Sure enough my engine mounts now need replacing, and that's anywhere between $350-$500. Another recall perhaps? it's been doing this since day 1, and my warranty ended about 6 months ago. Go figure. . . Just when 3 years was up! sigh.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2013

I was on a major expressway when the vehicle starting decreasing speed. I went from 55 mph to 45 to 35 to 25 to 15 to 5 and the stopped. Luckily traffic was light and when this started, I pulled over to the shoulder of the road which was close to an exit. I somehow got the SUV home, starting the engine, it dying out and going a couple of feet over and over again. We took the vehicle to our auto ship and they said that Ford had a problem with the throttle and gave us a north carolina consumers council article. They did not have the digital equipment to fix and referred us to Ford dealership. Ford dealership advised it was the throttle. I talked to Ford customer service and they advised there was no recall and there was nothing they coujd do. I we spent $362. 56 on throttle and two letters later Ford will do nothing since they say we do not have the extended warranty and we are beyond three years/36,000 miles. I was afraid when the car died out on the expressway.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2013

My husband was driving the car at 65 mph on the highway and the care went limp and would not accelerate. He had to pull over to the side and restart the car. This happened to him 3 times and me one time. I took it to a dealership and it is the throttle body. You have received several complaints and there is an ongoing investigation. In addition, the dealership was going to overcharge me for the repair. Please do everything in your power to get Ford to recall this party and reimburse the customer before there is a fatality.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

My 2010 Mercury Mariner went into limp mode and would not respond to throttle inputs. I researched this issue and learned that this problem appears to be related to a faulty throttle body or electronic control panel for the throttle body. This an extremely dangerous condition as it appears at random without warning. I believe this must be a defect that has been known to Ford for some time and needs to be the subject of a recall.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, there was a loss of engine power. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. Upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally until the failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the throttle body assembly would need to be replaced however, the part was on back order and the vehicle would be repaired when the part became available. The manufacturer had not been notified. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

Was driving on freeway at about 70-75 mph and hesitation occurred and speed uncontrollably decreased. I went to right lane (had been in middle lane) and stopped on the shoulder of the nearest exit lane. Luckily it was very close. I was afraid that I would lose control of steering also. This is 3rd time this happened, so took to dealership and they replaced throttle body assm. For close to $500. Technician said I should be happy now, the new part had been re-designed. I'd be alot happier if Ford had taken responsibility earlier when they realized it needed to be redesigned. The previous occurrence I was in left lane at very busy time on xpressway and had to pull onto the left hand shoulder. . . . Very close to being hit.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2013

My daughter was traveling in louisiana on business, when for no reason the SUV stopped on the interstate she phoned me in tears on the issue, she was stranded on the interstate for a short while. She got it started again after a few minutes. She drove for another few miles and it did it again. She finally made it to a dealer. The dealer ran a test that cost her 125 dollars only to tell her she had a bad electronic throttle body assembly. They informed her that the part was not available and would be days maybe weeks before they could get one. She than returned to her place of stay , that took about an hour because she could take the interstate and had to stop every few miles to restart the engine. What a huge inconvenience and frightened she would be rear ended. I hope a resolution is in the works for this safety issue.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2013

Description was mad with complaint no. 10525937 I had entered the wrong type vehicle.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2013

Vehicle electronic throttle body (etb) was replaced at veterans Ford dealership in tampa, FL due to this part severly effecting ability of the vehicle to run properly (several times). Customer paid for this repair. Sometime after 3/4/14 when NHTSA completed their investigation, we received a notice that Ford was replacing this item. Since we already paid for the repair ($381. 32) at a Ford dealership, we tried to get the reimbursement that Ford owes us. We were informed we had to have the original receipt, which to this day is still packed up in storage if we have it at all because we moved from FL to nc and are still involved in buying a new home. The bottom line is Ford (corp) is refusing to honor their agreement to reimburse customers. The craziest part of this whole dilema is that Ford has and controls 100% of the information needed to process our reimbursement, but absolutely refuses to do so without the original receipt. I could understand if we had this repair done at some unrelated, third party service facility. However, we went to a Ford dealership and they have record of completing the repair and us paying them for the repair. So again, Ford has all the information (proof) in their possession to take care of this reimbursement, but refuses to do so. I have called the customer (dis)satisfaction department at Ford corporate, but that is like talking to a brick wall as far as anyone having in common sense, accountability or decency to do the right thing (certainly any kind of good will is lacking in that organization). So here I am having to complain to the NHTSA to get Ford to do what they promised in the first place. I look forward to a timely reply letting me know you guys have this handled. Additionally, Ford should be reprimanded severly for such assinine behavior and attitude. Maybe a consumer reporter needs to get involved in all this. Thanks.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

I was driving at about 25 mph when the car suddenly lurched forward, then began rapidly decelerating. I had to get off the road and coast to a stop. I turned the car off then restarted it and everything seemed fine, but the problem happened again later that day and several more times in the coming weeks. It has happened at various speeds and under diverse conditions. It is intermittent and unpredictable. After nearly causing an accident on the interstate due to this occurrence I am now limited to surface streets and only when I have no other option but to drive my car. After doing some reading it seems that this is a known defect with the throttle body and I worry that even if I pay out of pocket to have it repaired I will only be buying another part with the same defect. My hope is that Ford will issue a recall of the vehicles for which this is a known issue!.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2013

A year ago in July of 2012 not sure the approximate date, I was on my way to work and all of a sudden everything just cut off. I'm in the middle of the road, accelerator to the floor and nothing. I took the car to the dealership same day and they had it all day long and couldn't figure out what caused the short and sent me on my way. Now present day which is a bout a year later I take my car in for a simple safety inspection, wait 10 minutes for the porter to bring me my car to find out its idling and the accelerator is to the floor and its not moving. The gentlemen comes in and tells me its my throttle body going out on the car, he told me this has happened to several people and the part is on back order. He said a guy has had his car sitting there for 10 days and the part has yet to come in. They tell me this needs to be replaced, but ironically enough my warranty expired 4 days ago may 25,2013, which I wasn't aware of. I was at the dealer 2 months prior getting a oil change this didn't dawn on you to tell me it was going to expire. So I came to you with this problem a year ago you had no clue and said have a great day, I've been in every 3 months or so for oil changes since that incident, and you couldn't have noticed this problem before my warranty expired awfully convenient. I'm amazed with all the complaints and problems I've seen about this same issue and no recall has been made. This is dangerous. What it tells me is that Ford doesn't care about their consumers enough to take this matter seriously and correct this error.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, there was a sudden loss of power as the wrench warning icon illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 58,849 and the current mileage was 59,000.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

I was driving along on the highway (I-77 n) and all of a sudden my car started to jerk. The wrench tool light lit up on the dash board and the car immediately began to loose speed. The change in power and speed was quick and I had to quickly check the surrounding traffic and pull the car over to avoid and accident. After pulling over to the side of the road I cut the car completely off and it started back up. I took the car to the dealer where I purchased the car and I was advised to replace the filter. I purchased a filter from Ford and my car ran smoothly for about 2 weeks. I would push on the accelerator but it would not accelerate. Each time the wrench tool would appear and the engine light would come on. I have lost speed in the middle of an intersection. After my car started to cut off again following the installation of the new filter I took the car back to the dealer and was instructed to purchase throttle body spray. They cleaned out the throttle body and the car drove fine for a few days until I began experiencing the same problem. Some times I would have have to cut my car off a few times and restart it on one round trip. I keep regular maintenance on this car, changing the oil and rotating the tires, etc. I purchased the car in December 2012 because the car I had had over $2,500 of needed maintenance. I needed a reliable car to get around as the primary transportation for my family. I took the car back to the dealer a few times and they explained the code and explanation of the problem: trouble code p2111, throttle body actuator stuck open and closed. I really hope this investigation is expedited and that Ford recalls the Mercury Mariner 2010 due to the faulty throttle bottle. I have had zero maintenance issues with my vehicle other than the throttle body issues.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2013

The engine suddenly went from 70 mph to limp mode at about 900 rpm's or so. I was able to get to the shoulder and turn the engine off. I restarted the engine, and it worked normally allowing me to accelerate and leave the expressway. I was not sure what had happened so I did not think anything of it. This has happened four more times since. I thought at first that I had bad gasoline because the engine light went on for the second incident and the car was low on gas. I limped to a gas station that time and filled the tank. After restarting the car everything worked normally, and the engine light turned off. In the subsequent incidents, I did not notice the engine light going on. I just turn off the engine and restarted the car. This is very dangerous to lose power at 70 miles per hour. In one case I had just past a truck on a two lane highway. I noticed that this seems to fall under your NHTSA action #:pe13003.
