Mercury Milan owners have reported 55 problems related to brake light (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mercury Milan based on all problems reported for the Milan.
I was pulled over for my brake light being out. I went to the dealer and was charged $600 for a brake light assembly. My car has 35,636 miles on it, like new vehicle. Even though it is know defect Ford would not reimburse me for part. I was told it was out of warranty and not a saftey issue. I certainly believe that a brake light is a safety issue- especially since they have not replaced my driver side airbag. I think this part should have been recalled and I should be reimbursed. Thank you!.

Left rear brake light. It works part of the time and then it does not work. Stopped several times for it not working, then it would start. Not the entire brake light is out. Part of it still lights up. This has been happening since I bought the car used about 4 years ago.
When driving in motion passenger rear brake light is on at night at all times. . . . Got pulled over and ticketed. When home I could not recreate the event at several attempts to brake both forward and backward with the headlights turned on. Car has only 29,000 miles on it.
Right rear brake light doesn't work at all now. Had been working off and on for several months but every time I had it looked at, it worked. Now completely inop. Took car to harold zigler Ford in elkhart for recall 19s01 and they looked at brake light and said I needed the complete housing replaced for over $400???? looked up recall 14m03 for this very problem. This is a safety hazard and I need it fixed under this recall ASAP. Why didn't dealership offer this fix? thank you I. Advance for your help.

Rear passenger led brake lights failed, will not illuminate after shaky 'flashing' noticed for a few months. Replaced with salvage led assy for $150. Withinweeks, the driver's side brake light is noticed to stay on any time the running or headlights are on. Both are unsafe conditions and both require full assy replacement.
When my headlights are on, the right brake lights are constantly illuminated.
When my headlights are on, the brake lights are constantly illuminated. I read this is a common problem with the 2010's. There needs to be a recall.
Got a ticket for driver side brake light being out. Next day found out brake light is $300 that is insane this is not a high end vehicle. An led light is the cheapest light ever invented. If Ford doesn't make this a recall I will never purchase another Ford product again . . . . . Total ripoff!.
My brake light/ running lights on my rear passenger side doesn't work. They are led so I believe after less then 5 years they shouldn't blow.
Passenger side brake light went out completely without warning. The replacement led assembly costs upwards of $400 to replace. Led bulbs should have a life span of >10 years. Several other complaints filed with the NHTSA lead me to believe that this is the result of a faulty part.
The driver's side brake light began flickering after the car was parked. I was also informed after this was noticed that it flickers (gets brighter) while driving. The passenger brake light also stayed brightly illuminated last year, and I was told it would be over $500 to replace the light assembly. Fortunately, my vehicle sustained an accident and the passenger light was damaged further and replaced. Now a defect is occurring on the driver's side.
Driver's side brake light stays illuminated all the time while vehicle is on and while driving, instead of only turning on when brake is pressed down. In November I noticed the driver's side brake light begin to flicker while parked. Since it is a malfunction with the led lights, the entire brake light housing would have to be replaced, a roughly $410 repair. For as often as I have seen other 2011 Mercury Milan owners complain about this, you would think this would have been recalled already. I have been told the brake light constantly staying on is distracting and very bright to other drivers behind me.
The led assembly responsible for illumination of the brake lights has failed prematurely presenting a potential safety concern. Ford charges an exorbitant fee ($376) for the hardware alone, not including the price for installation. This cost is unreasonable to replace faulty components which provide safety functionality. This has been referred to by the mechanics at the dealership as a "common" problem, so should it not be worthy of a safety recall?.
At approximately 9:00pm I was pulled over by a a police officer who advised me that my passenger side brake light was not working and in fact was staying on all the time. After researching this problem I have found that many, many owners have this same issue yet Ford/Mercury has not recalled the affected part. Obviously this is a potential hazard as drivers behind me may be confused when looking at my brake lights but not seeing a change. Also, I assume that this will affect my vehicle passing inspection in my state. Apparently this part costs over $400. 00 to replace and many people cannot afford this expenditure.
The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that the rear passenger side brake light failed to work. The vehicle was under warranty and was taken to the dealer who stated that the rear light assembly needed to be replaced. The warranty covered the repairs, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 67,000.
I recently purchased this "certified" Mercury Milan on 10/25/14. I have only had it for less than 3 wks and the right brake light went out. I only knew this because I was pulled over by our local police dept. And was given a warning. I tried to find this in the local auto store and found out it needed to be purchased by the dealer. I then contacted the dealer and was told to bring it in. I was told a ticket would be created and given to sales and I would be called the next day. Since the vehicle was still "new" to me I thought it would be covered under my warranty. I waited 2 days and no response. My spouse went into the dealer and was told that the brake light assembly was not covered by the warranty and that the cost to us would be $500. I feel that this is a major safety hazard that many consumers cannot afford and many accidents will be caused. I do not even feel safe driving my grandchild in this vehicle for fear of him being injured if I get rear ended. I feel do to this being a safety concern that Ford would do a recall after having so many complaints about it. I have called Ford motor CO. @ 800-392-3673 to voice my concern. The more that call maybe something will be done before an innocent person loses their life because of a faulty system that this company is very aware of. .
Right rear tail lamp / brake light assembly inop again. This is my 3 assembly that has failed in 15 months. It is an led assembly, it costs $375. 00 for the part. You can't replace a bulb. This should be covered under a safety recall.
We were informed by a individual in a passing car that our brake lights were not functioning properly one evening. We took the car to a dealer to get the oil changed and exterior brake lighting issue resolved. We were told that that the brake lights needed to be replace and because it was part of an assembly, the total charge would be $1281. 87 which included an oil change and diagnosis. I felt I had no choice but to replace the lights rather than endanger us or some other individual(s) on the road. I called Ford and received a case # but as of 11/21/14 I have heard no response. Going to this site there is 89 out of 438 complaints about this same issue. I do not believe that these led lights should go out this quick nor that if needed to be replaced, should require the whole brake assembly to be replaced. This is a engineering design failure. Ford claims "quality is job one. This is not the case with this issue. I believe the NHTSA needs to address this and issue a recall.
The left rear brake light is not functioning. This light is not a normal incandescent bulb. It is an led that is not owner-serviceable. The only fix is that the entire taillight assembly needs to be replaced by the dealer at a cost of approximately $400. Any buyer's expectation is that when a light bulb burns out, we should be able to replace it ourselves for fifty cents. Since this 50-cent item is now unexpectedly $400, the net effect is that all owners will continue to drive around with two of three, one of three or no brake lights at all. This should be an immediate safety recall.
It has been three weeks since I purchased a 2010 Mercury Milan with 41,000 miles but last night I discovered both rear brake light illuminated with the headlights on. My profession is in the safety field which leads me to say that if this vehicle was on my job site it would be tagged out of service due to improper safety equipment. I have had issues with Ford motor company in the past and even though I do like their products they have to take responsibility and be accountable for what they sell to individuals. There should be a recall for this safety equipment. I will not allow my family to operate this vehicle in it's present condition.
The left rear outer brake light assembly led lights have failed. I expected to be able to pick up a replacement at the local auto parts dealership. I found out that I had to get the part from my Ford dealer. I can not simply replace the led assembly. It will cost nearly $400. 00 for me to purchase a new brake light assembly. This is a ridiculously high price to pay for the replacement of a brake light. I fear the high cost will cause many Milan drivers to continue to drive without adequate lighting on their vehicles. Ford should either replace the part for free, or greatly reduce the cost of the assembly due to their design failure.
Driver side rear brake light staying illuminated constantly as if the brake is pressed and nearly caused crash (I had two small children sitting in the back of my Milan), had the vehicle behind me not went into the ditch a collision would have been inevitable. Please look into this problem as it has the potential to cause bodily harm and injury to the occupants. I had no idea there was a problem with constant illumination until this point. Upon scheduling an appointment at the Ford dealership and doing a little research I see this is a frequently reported problem but no recall has yet been issued nor an investigation. Also since learning of this problem this morning and observing the vehicle brake lights there is also a flicker of lights every so often.
Right rear brake light failed. Led brake light must be replaced as an assembly at a cost of over $300.
This is another documentation of many other owners whose brake lights on a 2010 Mercury Milan were not functional without any knowledge of the owner or driver, causing potential for accidents. During daylight hours or when the headlights do not come on automatically, the left brake light works normally and the right brake light is sporadic, not working abut 70+% of the time. When the headlights are on the left brake light is brighter as if the brake was on and the brake light does not change intensity. The right brake light does not go on but the rear light works. The center brake light always works regardless of whether the headlights are on or not. There is no indication on the dashboard that any light is malfunctioning. I only discovered this by following my wife home after we had our daughter¿s car in for service. I since followed her for about 20 miles on another day to confirm this situation. We took the car to the dealer who quickly diagnosed the problem, faulty brake light assemblies and two days later, and $847 payment the problem was fixed, for now.
Right rear tail and brake light stopped working, about 2 weeks later they flickered and came back on. They went out again 2 days later and have been out for about 2 months. Called dealership and they said it wasn't covered under warranty and would have to replace the whole tail/brake light unit at a cost of about $500. I contacted Ford customer service three times and they said it was a light problem and not under warranty by them. It treated as a light bulb problem, but a $500 light bulb!!!! Ford needs to fix this problem.
My neighbor informed me that the rear brake light is out. It is not safe and it is illegal to drive without fully operating brake lights. This car only has 30,000 miles on it. Ford has to replace a complete rear lamp module which includes other rear lights that still work, to the tune of $300 to$400. My brother-in-law has owned 50+ cars over many years and he said he has never had to replace a brake light. Ford should be replacing these defective led brake lights as a technical/safety recall.
When stepping on the brakes the rear passenger brake light either flickers or illuminates half way. When we took it to Ford they said this was not covered by warranty and tried to charge us $500. This is obviously a malfunction on the manufacturers side.
The passenger side led brake light assembly is constantly illuminated as if the brakes are applied but they are not. Makes a safety hazard as it is distracting to drivers that are following and they may misjudge my braking. This is the second assembly that I have had go faulty. The first was the day I bought it but the dealer replaced the $400 part for free.
There is a serious brake light malfunction on 2010 Mercury Milan's that Ford dealerships are charging owners up to $1000 to fix, even on cars that are barely out of warranty! on these vehicles, when the headlights are on, the brake lights are continuously on, whether or not your foot is on the brake pedal! hundreds of complaints are flooding the internet with this problem and Ford is turning a blind eye to it! and, there is no recall!! we just found out we had this problem today after taking our car for its first ever inspection in the delaware lanes (which it failed due to the malfunction). This is a huge safety hazard. Owners of these cars are basically riding around with no indication of braking when their lights are on and no knowledge that they have a problem. People are going to be getting rear-ended in large numbers. Is it going to take people getting injured and/or killed like in the recent gm ignition key fiasco before Ford takes any action? something needs to be done.
Left and right brake lights stay on brake lights when lights are turned on.
Led brake light flickers on and off.
The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that the rear brake light illuminated. The contact mentioned that there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was takenk to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the tail light assembly needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 49,500 and the current mileage was 50,000. Updated 8/12/cn.
If headlights or parking lights are on, left and right stop lights do not change brightness when brakes are applied. The brake light in the rear windshield does come on as it should.
I have had to replace both brake lights on my 2010 Milan. Now that they are led with a computer the cost is $400 a piece. Not a good thing.
At night (with running lights on) the left rear brake light remains on all the time and does not respond when pressing the brake pedal.
