Speed Control Cable problems of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Three problems related to speed control cable have been reported for the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2001

During normal operation of vehicle gas pedal will stick, allowing vehicle to accelerate without driver controlling the vehicle. Dealership has examined vehicle, and determined that accelerator cable was defective and must be replaced. Please provide any additional information / attachments.

2 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2001

Vehicle was at a stop, consumer pressed on accelerator and nothing happened. Vehicle did not move, nor did engine rev. After a few minutes, accelerator responded again. Dealer disconnected speed control cable, and advised consumer that was what had caused the problem. Currently, pedal feels tight and popps back when consumer lets go of it.

3 Speed Control Cable problem

Failure Date: 08/20/1998

On two occasions accelerator cable snapped, causing vehicle to be without power first occurrence was in traffic, and second occurrence on a dark road. Believed both incidents were due to faulty parts. Dealer notified, and repairs were being made again.
