Speed Control Linkage problems of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Four problems related to speed control linkage have been reported for the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2001

During normal operation of vehicle gas pedal will stick, allowing vehicle to accelerate without driver controlling the vehicle. Dealership has examined vehicle, and determined that accelerator cable was defective and must be replaced. Please provide any additional information / attachments.

2 Speed Control Linkage problem

Recall 97v074000, concerning throttle linkages and control; dealer refused to correct the problem because vehicle was not registered in listed states. Please give any further details.

3 Speed Control Linkage problem

While driving at 40 mph the accelerator pedal separated from its linkage and fell off. The dealership indicated that this was caused by the welding becoming detached and needed to be re-welded.

4 Speed Control Linkage problem

While driving consumer lost control and ran into ditch. Driver tried to accelerate to get out of the ditch, and when stepped on gas pedal, vehicle suddenly accelerated, causing driver to crash into a low wall. Driver suffered chest/head, and neck injuries. Dealer has been contacted.
