1 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2014

While driving my vehicle the o/d light starts flashing very fast. I can hear the vehicle revving as I am pressing on the gas. All of a sudden a hard pop and then the vehicle starts to accelerate. I try to continue home and the vehicle gets to around 30 mph and does it again, as time goes on (same drive) it gets harder to shift into gear around 20 mph and stays at that speed. Vehicle is a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with 150,000 miles.

2 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated the vehicle had a very hard shift for a few months. While driving the transmission failed and the overdrive light came on prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times since it was purchased and was always told that nothing was wrong with the transmission. The dealer recently stated there was a blow hole at the bottom of the transmission and the hole expanded which caused the failure. The dealer told the contact there was a repair kit that could be used, but not until the transmission failed completely. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 75,000.

3 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2010

The problem was not noticeable at first. The SUV felt heavy when accelerating, it will jerk every now and then it was like this for a period of two days then the o/d light flashed rapidly and on the message center it displayed check transmission< the transmission constantly slips on every gear it revs without accelerating and when unexpected it catches itself and lunges jerks forward. It also makes a loud noise whenever the transmission shifts gears. This is everytime the vehicle is in use. I have no other means of transportaion . I took it to get diagnostics checked and they told me the transmission was faulty that there had been hundreds of complaints in my area dealing with the same make and model and year. I have not tried to correct the faulty tranny . I believe Ford should consider the safety of it customers /consumers and should have a nationwide recall to repair such faulty transmission. I have been more close to crashing this year than all my years of driving. This faulty transmisssion is dangerous.

4 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

O/d light blinking - hesitation when shifting while driving occurring each time the vehicle was operating - took it to transmission expert who fixed for 2000 because dealer quoted 3500! trans guy asked if it was 2002 or 2003 as soon as he heard the make and model. Cracked liftgate that was fixed in the first year of owning the vehicle but second time it cracked the dealer would not fix it and quoted $700 Ford would not fix either. An obvious defect!.

6 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2009

I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer 4. 6l awd. After buying this car I had heard about how big of a lemon the transmissions are, and on January 27th I found this out for myself. First my car began shifting very harshly. Then my o/d off light began flashing, check engine light came on, and check transmission lcd came on. I lost third gear on the middle of the highway and had to drive 9 miles home going only 25 mph. Then I found out that it is going to cost $2500+ to fix the problem. Unfortunately I'm a single mother and full-time student, so my car is just going to sit for a few months until I can afford to fix it. Ford should be held accountable for this problem. I have heard far too many complaints and no one has done anything about it .

7 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2009

O/d light blinks and transmission shifts hard or misses shifts. Feels like tranny might be about to go. . . Started about a year ago but went away after changing tranny fluid. Now it is back, issue is worse, and seems like it is here to stay.

8 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The transmission on my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The o/d light is flashing, and seems trans is slipping even worse. I have had it to the dealership many times since I bought it new, and they never could find the problem. Now it has been out of warranty for quiet some time and has became a huge problem. I looked on the internet and noticed a ton of complaints on this exact issue and was hoping it would be ground for a recall.

9 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2008

On Dec. 19, 2008, the o/d light began to flash and then on Dec. 26th the service engine soon light came on. As I was driving the car began to rev up when I was not mashing the gas. I have not driven it since. I called the Ford dealership and was told to do a diagnostic test on it, it would cost $98 per issue. I searched the issue online and found that many people have complained about this and have paid thousands of dollars to have it fixed. I would like to know if this is a recallable issue due to the about of complaints? I just spent $300 having the door ajar sensor fixed, something that others have also complained about.

10 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2007

After reading other complaints regarding 2002 Mountaineers and explorers, I can hardly type I am so frustrated. The number of power train complaints for this year, make and model are astounding. The transmission in my 2002 Mountaineer (aka money sucker) needs to be replaced. The car is currently being fixed at the Ford dealer for $3500. The car has always had a funny shutter when shifting from 2nd to 3rd as well as hesitation when dropping into reverse and drive. While driving in icy conditions yesterday my wife thought her tires were spinning when she was trying to proceed at a stop light. She thankfully avoided being rear ended by a semi that was able to swerve onto the apron and avoid contact with her. She was able to limp the car to the side of the road where she then called me. After I arrived, I attempted to get the car to the Ford dealership where it could be diagnosed. However, the car would only reach 30mph and the rpm?s were at 4,000 to 5,000 at that speed. The overdrive light flashed and the check engine light came on. I parked it and removed the battery cables for 10 minutes to see if the computer would reset itself ? this did not help. In fact, the car would not even move in drive or reverse. Had the dealer pick it up to get it fixed. This car has 108,000 miles on it ? not exactly knew this is true, but it sounds like I was one of the lucky ones to get that many miles out of it ? from the reports I've read on the internet. Have also experienced and replaced front left bearings, rear left bearing and have the problem with the steering that many have reported on this vehicle (binding, tension, can?t make full turns, popping sounds).

11 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. While driving 55 mph and towing a camper, the overdrive off light illuminated. The vehicle also skipped gears. The dealer stated that the transmission fluid needed to be changed, but the contact declined to have it changed. The vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who stated that the servo piston in the transmission was worn, which damaged the bands and drums. The transmission specialist made the repair. The failure mileage was 67,678 and current mileage was 67,800. Updated 02-01-08. Updated 02/01/08.

12 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

Traveling I-95 n between baltimore,MD and wilmington DE when transmission started slipping in 2002 merc mtnr. Transmission slipping when shifting into 3rd gear at toll both. Pulled off hwy at rest stop but did not turn off engine. Pulled back onto hwy, accelerated and check transmission indicator came on. O/d light began flashing. Pulled off hwy, called for tow and was taken to local Ford dealership. Was told band was broken in transmission and replacement was needed at cost of $4361. Had just replaced left rear wheel bearing and rear parking brakes week prior for $650. Vehicle had 75k miles. Couldn't justify spending that much money on 6 year old vehicle that had left me stranded five hours from home. Traded vehicle (got annihilated on trade!) and continued my trip.

13 Overdrive Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2005

The gears began making a whining and clicking noise as shifting occured at slower speeds. We were on a highway for approximately 1 1/2 hours when the o/d off light started flashing and the transmission downshifted from 5 th gear to 4th the remainder of the way. The words "check transmission" came on the odometer screen.

A sudden thunk in the transmission and o/d light came on. By the next stop, it would not shift properly.
