This vehicle is has a power train problem from day one with the 5r55s/w transmission and awd transfer case. I purchased this vehicle where it stranded my family over 200 miles from home and it's a non running car. This vehicle should have been removed from being sold with this defect and crushed! I will never buy a foundonroad dead Ford pos ever. The transmission went into neutral with out any notice. To repair the faulty drive train I will cost me aprox $2400. 00 mileage 152,000 third time the drive train has been worked on. . There tranmissions were failing in a little as 50,000 miles.

Transmission would not shift into third gear. 70000 miles no towing just street driving. Had to have the transmission rebuilt. Seems to be common issue for Ford on 2002 Mercury Mountaineers and Ford explorers.

2004 Mercury Mountaineer v8, 47,000 miles. Transmission is shot. It slipped in and out or reverse (creating a very dangerous situation since I could not control the vehicle when it was in reverse) and it struggled to shift gears in drive. No warning light before the problems began. The vehicle aged out of warranty in July 2010. Ford will not pay for anything (although the dealer is cutting me a break on the service costs).
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. While the vehicle was parked, a 19 month old toddler sitting in the driver's seat moved the gear shifter into reverse without the keys being in the ignition. The rear door was open and the vehicle crashed into a gate and rolled into the middle of the street. The rear door and the gate were damaged. There were no injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 120,929.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact noticed that when driving, the transmission was unable to be shifted into second or fifth gear. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who informed the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who took a complaint but offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.

Wife driving to work when car stopped moving. Pulled off street (near a car shop), paid $100 for them to do a diagnostic check and they said that gears and belt blew out and that he used to work with Ford and that this is a common problem in earlier 2000's suvs (explorer and Mountaineers). ~$3000 to fix by them. Researched on line and saw all of the problems people are having. Something needs to be done before someone gets killed.
2006 Mercury Mountaineer v8 awd--when shifting from park to drive or reverse it "clunks" hard into gear. The wrench symbol and the engine symbol light up. The vehicle also drives hard as if it isn't changing gears. The dealership will only say that the Ford TSB recommends replacing the transmission fluid and filter, then resealing with foam seal first but refuses to give me an actual diagnosis of what is going on with the car. They can not tell me the real problem and insist that we will have to work through the various steps on the Ford tsbs which may or may not work (by their own admission) and the cost of final repairs is completely open ended. When I questioned what we would try next after the transmission fluid/filter replacement (because I was skeptical about this causing the issue on a vehicle with only 43,000 miles) they had no answers at all. We have owned this vehicle less than a year. An internet search reveals that this is a major ongoing problem with this model but Ford refuses to own up to it. There needs to be a recall.
2006 Mercury Mountaineer shifts hard when going into reverse, and is also starting to shift hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. Have heard from many there people with 2006 Ford explorers that there is a manufacturer defect in the transmission. Have had chip reprogrammed at dealership (was charged) and also had transmission flushed and it is actually worse now. My Mountaineer has 58,000 miles on this and has been doing this for the past 2,000 miles. Ford should fix this issue.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the vehicle began to experience a very hard shift when changing gears and driving any speed. The vehicle would also surge forward slightly during the hard shifts. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The contact also stated that the gear shift lever felt abnormally loose whenever operated. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. Updated 3/7/11 updated 03/14/11.
I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The tailgate developed a crack between the emblem and the rear glass lift. It was fixed once already and has since cracked again. Since this crack has developed, the door ajar light has come on. I have noticed the same crack in almost every Ford explorer and Mountaineer that I see. I contacted the dealer to have it repaired again and was told that they only cover the repair once. I don't feel I should have to pay out of pocket for an obvious manufacturing defect. I then contacted Ford and was told there is nothing they can do for me. Keep in mind, I have also had numerous visits for my transmission having issues from the beginning and I have also had issues with the cruise control where it suddenly "takes off" and goes really fast. Ford needs to stand by it's vehicles and fix them when there are obvious manufacturer defects!.
Transmission rebuild at 100,000 miles, 6 yrs old. Feel like it is too soon to have this kind of problem. I understand this has been a quite a common problem too. The body panel under the back glass is also cracked.
I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. I was stopped to get fuel. I put my SUV in park to get out. I was leaving my keys in it. When I stepped out and walked to the rear, my SUV started rolling backwards. I had to run back an jump in it and hit the brake. I looked at the gear shifter an it didn't go into park. It stopped in the middle of p and r. If I had locked the doors I would never been able to get inside before it hit the fuel pumps. It has been stopping at that spot every time I put it in park.

The transmission on the early model 2002's go bad early. Research on the internet revealed many many complaints. I found a few that said that Ford was aware of the problem. Redesigned the transmission in the middle of the year, but will not correct the problem.
2004 Mercury Mountaineer sometimes jerk really hard when put in reverse gear. Twice, it jerked so hard, I had to slam on the brakes, cause it was backing back fast. Really scared me. Other times, it jerks hard, but stays put until I press the gas. I never know when this will happen, there is no warning. Took truck to Mercury dealer once, over a year ago. Said they checked, but couldn't find anything. Vehicle is paid for. No longer have warranty. About 3 weeks ago when the last jerk occurred.
2000 Mercury Mountaineer transmission is defective. I have had to repair my transmission 3 times now.

Here is the e-mail I sent to Ford regarding what is going on. : my name is leanne freeman I own a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer,I have been having transmission trouble with the car since I bought it. I am concerned that I am not the only person having this trouble I looked on the internet and was able to find 25,000 pages of people having the same trouble many of which have made contact with Ford. I am concerned that Ford knows there is a problem and has done nothing to fix it. . Read more...
Transmission jerks ahead while traveling on long distances and short. It has gotten worse. When I apply gas and use the passing gear to accelerate it shakes violently. Going in and out of neutral it would seem. Vehicle is 2007 53,000 miles. Currently at dealer with transmission specialist. They are talking to Ford hq for direction and have tried unsuccessfully to fix it so far. They are now looking at megatronics. Internet blogs show this is very common in Ford SUV's and not a new problem but overlooked for sure.

I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and the transmission is very dangerous, my wife started to back up and put it in reverse and the transmission hesitated and then slammed into reverse causing her to jerk and then her foot came of the brake and hit the gas pedal causing her to ram a parked car behind her, and that was just the first time . The next time I myself was in the vehicle and it done the same thing except there was not a car behind me to stp me and I went over a embankment and if not for a tree I would have gotten hurt bad , the tree stopped me from going to the bottom , and it still to this day will slam into reverse, nothing has been done with it yet . I have read on the internet that alot of Mercury Mountaineer owners are having the same problem this is going to get someone killed if it has not already.
My truck has 115,000 miles on it, transmission is now gone. When I put it in reverse it would jerk back like the it was being hit, all of sudden it started dragging while driving, and having problems shifting into gear, and now its totally gone. . . Only had the vehicle two years.
V8 Mountaineer jolts when you come to stop, feels like it has been rear ended, no accidents at this point, but there has been a few close calls.
2006 Mercury Mountaineer transmission problems. Hesitation, funny shifting. Could get someone in trouble by the random shifting problem. Ford dealer I went to said they had never heard of the problem. When you google this it is a problem thanks.
I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer with 78000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced three months ago for slipping and not downshifting it is now gong back in tomorrow to be repaired for needs to recall this vehicle it isn't very good.
My car has had a continuing problem with the transmission. It shifts roughly and lurches when beginning to move. For example, when stopped at a stoplight, and then beginning to drive, it will lurch, jolting the passengers. Our driveway is sloped toward the street. When I park the car, I always set the emergency brake as well. The car always rolls a few inches before the brakes lock, even though it is stopped and in park. On Sep. 4, 2009, my mother borrowed my car to go to lunch. She couldn't find the emergency brake release. She put the car in park and got out to locate the emergency brake. She found it and released it. The car popped into reverse and rolled backwards to the street. The door knocked my mother down and she hit her head hard enough to sustain a closed head injury with minor bleeding in her brain. The car rolled across the street, over the curb and hit a neighbor's poplar tree. The entire tailgate was destroyed, there was some interior damage and the frame was warped. The tailgate had to be replaced, the bumper and trailer hitch had to be repaired and the frame straightened. My mother was in hospital overnight and had to have two CT-scans. She still has headaches and transient dizziness. We are just fortunate the car didn't run her over, hit a pedestrian (there are a lot of walkers in our neighborhood), hit a car or a neighbor's house.
Just bought a used 2000 Mercury Mountaineer and this morning we experienced a problem with the transmission. Put it into reverse and it immediately shut down and started to roll backwards because of being on a slight incline. Put it back into park and tried again to have it happen again and again. Looked up on google and now find that this seems to be an inherited problem that Ford is not addressing. What is our recourse on this matter?.
2002 Mercury Mountaineer, transmission is bucking, over drive light flashing, check transmission light on. Also rotated tires, changed brakes, and had rotors cut yet there still is a pulsating felling in front end when stopping.
I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and I am having transmission problems now. I had an accident back in June 2009 where my vehicle rolled out of the yard and hit the neighbors house and I was hurt in the process. On June 22, 2009, I went outside to warm my vehicle up before I went to work that morning. While, I was getting ready to leave out the door to go to my vehicle it start rolling back. I immediately ran outside behind the vehicle to keep it from hitting the neighbors house because I knew people were there. I grab the door and it threw me on the ground so hard that I thought I damaged my organs. After the lowndes county sheriff left, I went to george's in west point, ms where they do my tires and brakes to check on the brakes. They checked my car and said everything was fine. I went to the north mississippi medical clinic to make sure I was ok and I didn't have any broken bones. I had to go back to the doctor again the next day on June 23, 2009 because I was not feeling good. I was taken to baptist memorial hospital on June 26, 2009 due to the incident and when I was thrown it jarred my acid reflux and caused a virus. I was checked thoroughly for organ damage and put on pain medication. This incident cost my insurance to go up and I didn't know what happen until my transmission starting going out in my vehicle. I have had this vehicle for two years and have three more years to pay for it and my transmission is going out. I looked on the internet under recalls to see if there were any and I saw 12 complaints regarding the transmission problems. One complaint caught my attention regarding the vehicle rolling out of the yard and that's what happen to me. I took my vehicle to starkville Ford on Dec. 29, 2009 and was told that my 2nd shift gear has completely gone out and I asked how does this happen and he said he didn't know. He knows because I am pretty sure he has seen alot of these vehicles and it is going to cost me $3500 to fix my vehicle .
2006 Mercury Mountaineer slipped out of parked in driveway and hit mother inlaws 2005 GMC envoy. This is one of a hand full of times it has slipped off park. Took it to the dealership 3 times and nothing, now I am fighting with grand ledge Ford, grand ledge, mi to get it fix or replace the transmission before someone get seriously hurt or even dies. This is a very scary situation and needs to be recalled as soon as possible.
Transmission hard downshift when stopping or in slow traffic. Vehicle surges almost "leaps" forward while at a stop when foot taken off of brake pedal. Almost hit vehicle in front. Another Mountaineer owner refers to it as a "bump stop". This occurs daily although not every time the vehicle stops or slows. The is very unnerving in stop & go traffic as you have to keep your foot on the brake and leave a large space between the vehicle in front to avoid rear ending the other vehicle. Took vehicle to aamco as our Ford dealership is deplorable, aamco could not detect any defects. Vehicle has 19,000 miles and is still under factory warranty.
During the later part of June 2008, I purchased a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer from carmax at the chicago ridge location in illinois which had 28,579 miles. According to the carfax report and sales person, this vehicle had successfully passed the 100 point inspection, and under normal driving condition this car had no major mechanical or electrical defects. Within the first 30 days I noticed a slight delay between shifting gears began to manifest, so naturally, I took the car immediately back to carmax. Since the problem exceeded their ability to fix it, I was instructed by carmax to take the car back to its original manufacturer, which is your organization, Ford. On July 1st 2008 a Ford mechanic at the 95th western location reported that they reprogrammed the truck, replaced vibration damper, and worked on the pulley-crankshaft. The delay ceased for a short period of time. Within the next few months, the problem reappeared in an even greater capacity than before as now the gears between the forward and reverse proceeded to produce a kick back motion. I decided to get a second written mechanical opinion from meineke transmission and muffler on 107th western, only to be told that the transmission was bad. Since the 100 point inspection on the carfax did not indicate such, as I would like to believe that carmax would not have sold me the car in that condition, I decided to get yet another written opinion. Once again, by another independent mechanic at luchas auto repair in south chicago, I was told that not only was the transmission bad but that it had to have been that way upon my original purchase as the year of the car (2004) is not commensurate with the degree of damage to the transmission as the car is less than six years old. Let me also state that the car is also under 50,000 miles.
Mercury Mountaineer 05 with less then 60,000 miles, I was told that there was wearing in the valve case from automatic transmission which causes transmission to skip and shift hard and pop forward, I need to have it repaired , transmission place states this is a known problem which has a technical advisory about it. . . . What's my recourse.
Od light starting flashing, then check transmission light starting flashing, then 3 and 5th gear started snatching, transmission went out. I heard alot of these suvs are having problems just like mine.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. While the vehicle was turned off, the contact's two year old son grabbed the key and placed it in the ignition. He attempted to start the vehicle, but the engine never ignited. The child then proceeded to place the shifter in either neutral or drive and the vehicle began to roll approximately 350 feet down a hill. The vehicle crashed into a brush-hog and a Honda vehicle before finally coming to a stop when it crashed into a building. The child sustained a contusion and lacerations to his head, chest, and legs. The vehicle was towed and is currently at a salvage yard. The police stated that even though the vehicle was not started, the gears were able to be shifted, which should not have occurred. A police report was filed. The contact believes that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and they should be held accountable. The speed was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 59,000.
The transmission in this vehicle is defective. Their should be a recall on this model which is a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The problem is costing all of fords customers alot of money average cost is 2600 dollars. They know about this problem and will not help even with some of the repair cost. This is not acceptable for any company to get away with. Please do something about this. Thank you.
