The transmission is slipping between gears, reving way higher than normal to shift and won't go into overdrive. My research of the problem shows this is a common issue on Ford and Mercury vehicles in this year range.

The contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact was driving approximately 50 mph when a vibration was felt and the transmission began to slip gears. The failure appeared to occur more frequently in warm weather temperatures. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the technician was unable to duplicate the problem. In addition, the instrument panel and gauges would illuminate intermittently as a result of defective pixels. The front driver's side power seat would move backward and forward freely while the vehicle was in motion. The contact would shut off the vehicle and once restarted, the failures would correct independently until later recurring without warning. In addition, the headlights failed intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failures. The manufacturer was notified of the defects. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

Purchased the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer in 2007. We only drive the car locally for school and work and within 30 days of purchase, the car would not go into reverse. Was told the transmission was slipping and made the dealership/warranty pay for $1600 repair. Since then the check engine light comes on every 3 months. We get check fuel cap message, replaced that twice (last one from actual Ford dealership) because they told us it wasn't the original from the car. Car leaks water through the rear window/roof seal and now my light stays on when I lock the car and it tells me every time we get in the car that there is a door ajar no matter if we get out and reclose all 4 doors and back door. R&r wheel speed sensor and ball joints had to be replaced 8/29/08 for $555. Just recently had my transmission go out again (12/8/09) and had to have complete rebuild of a Mercury transmission which cost us another $4000. It still slightly vibrates going between 30 and 40 miles per hour. Also the back hatch has cracked completely down through the logo. Our Ford dealer charges $200 just to look at the vehicle!.

My vehicles transmission had slipped once and took it in as soon as it happened to a Mercury dealer for service and they changed fluid and filter now it don't have reverse or forward gears unless I shift it manually the dealer said if they change fluid it will get worse and it did so they are aware of the problem why wasn't a recall given for this vehicles transmission plus there is no dip stick on the transmission to check the fluid now I have a vehicle that needs a transmission that has to be replaced at a cost of 3500 dollars and is out of warranty I am very disappointed that a car company can get away with this.
Transmission slips on my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer 6 cylinder awd. There is a common problem with this transmission throughout 2002 Mercury Mountaineer owners. Why has there been no recall on this transmission.
My 2006 Mountaineer has transmission problems. While coming to a stop at a light there is a loud "pop" or thud like noise as if the transmission is popping into place. Also transmission slips when going forward. It jerks especially at low speeds such as pulling out of a parking space. There is definitely something wrong with the transmission. Poor design or manufacturing but definitely something is wrong. You feel like you have been struck from behind when the popping/thud noise occurs at a light. Very unsettling. Also car lurches forward when pulling off from a standing position such as at a light and you feel like your going to hit the car in front of you.

2006 Mercury Mountaineer has transmission problems. Consumer states that his vehicle has been service several times but the problem is not fixed. The consumer stated the transmission would slip, most noticeably in frigid temperatures.
Transmission slipped between 2nd and 3rd gears, and between 3rd and 4th. Rpm raced high. Od light would flash, check engine light came on. Rpm's would race high, but the vehicle would not move, then suddenly catch. Transmission had to be rebuilt with only 56k miles. Two weeks in the shop, $600. Repair bill. Vehicle has been properly maintained at the dealership and has all service records.
Dt: the vehicle's transmission slipped, jumped and made clunking noises while in park, reverse or while the consumer was driving. The vehicle was taken to the shop several times for numerous things such as the ignition switch. She took her vehicle to the shop this time and they said it was her transmission. Her vehicle only has 41000 miles. She started smelling a burning smell and that's when she took it into the shop. She has only had the vehicle 45 days and has already had all these problems.
The transmission slips. I was stoped at a red light, when the light turned green I put my foot on the gas but the vehicle did not move. I could hear the engine rev, but it was a few seconds before the vehicle moved. This has happened 4 times in 2 months. The prior owner traded the vehicle in due to this problem, she informed the dealership of the problem and requested that they fix it before selling the vehicle.
While driving, the transmission slipped. The rpm started racing at a high rate. The consumer restarted the vehicle. Please provide more information.

The vehicle transmission slipped, jumped and made clunking noises. The steering column locked up. The rear hatch fell onto the consumers head which resulted in retinal detachment and balance trouble. Pe04045. Pco.
At 25 mph while applying gas pedal, engine revved, but vehicle slowed down instead. Took to dealer who found transmission needed to be replaced. Ford will replace it with remanufactured transmission. Traveling at 30-40 mph, the transmission slipped badly.
