I buckle the seat belt and it just comes unbuckled spontaneously when I’m driving. I check to see if the seat belt is secure by pulling on it. It seems secure but still unbuckles. I usually have to redo my seatbelt every 5 minutes. I do not feel like it will keep me safe in a collision.

Driver side seat belt refuses to latch and, if it does latch, comes unlatched on its own. On inspection, the 'guts' of the mechanism are gone.
Passenger seatbelt locks will not unlock unless you unbuckel the belt it just keeps getting tighter have a problem where the you push down on gas it won't do anything for a moment then jolt forward an the main problem it with the electric if you barley touch the ignition switch or controls for the seat the seat moves the ignition also not only moves the seat but a couple times it has shut the car off and once locked us in the car had to put the keys in and start to get it to unlock and once locked us out with keys still in ignition switch.

Mountaineer premier awd with just over 150,000 miles. Went to raise rear (third row) electrical seat on driver/left side. Makes a slight clicking sound and will raise up about 1 inch, then just stops going up with sounds still heard. Further investigation shows a motor in the center along a gear shaft which must raise the seat. The motor is whirring like it is functioning but the shaft doesn't move. There is no way to manually fully raise the seat.

I attempted to connect the two portions of the driver front seat belt and the latching mechanism in the female portion would not latch, thereby defeating my ability to secure the seat belt. I took the vehicle to a repair shop that quoted me almost $200 to repair the belt, indicating the oem kit was almost $150. Someone is profiteering on defective safety equipment.

I have 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and I have had it since February 2007. I have had numerous problems with it and the last problems was the breaking point. I have three more years to pay for this vehicle and I want something to be done about the problems with this vehcile. Ford should be held responsible for this vehicle and fixing the problems associated with it. I purchased this vehicle from community Ford in new albany, ms in February 2007 with 45,000 miles on it. I couldn't get an extended warranty or any warranty with the vehicle I was told. After a year, I had to replace the front end and it was $500. 00 at george's tire services. I took it in due to this noise coming from the front and I was advised that if I didn't have the work did it would lock up on me while I am driving and cause and accident. I noticed that my structure body:hatchback/tailgate has cracked completely. My seat belt on the driver side in the back don't work. My engine cooling system aircompressor has went out and I have electrical problems where my oil gauge is constantly saying it's low. I have my oil change every 3000 miles. I am hearing this noise in the rear of the vehicle and I don't know what it is and can't afford to get going to Ford to see what it is. I have been smelling this burning coming from the under the hood and I don't know what it is either. My lastest problem is my transmission is going out and I have had this vehicle for two years and I have three more years of payment on this vehicle. My transmission cost me around $3500 and I don't have any warranty on it. This is a lemon I have purchased and I think something should be done about it.

My transmission failed while I was driving on the freeway with my child in the car. This cause my car to "buck" and come to almost complete stop. Thankfully I was in the right lane and able to get off onto the shoulder. My car then would only go into 1st and 2nd gear. It would not shift to 3rd. I took it to a service center (actually 3 of them) who told me I need a new transmission. This is an extremely dangerous situation occurring with these cars. There were not tell tail signs. It was not slipping or rattling previous to this. In searching the internet on google I find there are thousands of people who are have experienced this same problem with Mercury or Ford 2000-2003 vehicles. Why isn't there a recall on this part. This is unacceptable. Eventually someone is going to get hurt. This repair is going to cost me approx. $3000. In addition to this one of my seat belts stopped working. When buckled it comes undone when I am driving. This is a rear passenger seat belt where my child sits. He can not refasten it by himself. I no longer seat him in that particular seat. But how long before the other stop working as well. For some reason your website will not take this number. I just called Ford and they verified the #.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer. The driver's seat belt is too short. The driver is barely able to buckle the seat belt, and once he does, he is unable to move. The contact feels that this is a safety risk because it puts him in a very uncomfortable situation. The dealer exchanged the seat belt, but it was identical to the one that was already in the vehicle. The manufacturer refuses to make any changes because it would be a safety violation. Ford only offered a seat belt extender, but the contact refuses to use an extender. He also owns a 2006 Mercury vehicle, in which the seat belt is 6-9 inches longer. The failure mileage was 23 and current mileage was 600. Updated 11/14/08 updated 11/18/08.
2002 Mercury Mountaineer v8 awd 4. 6 transmission failure. Vehicle had under 60,000 miles, but had surpassed extended warranty time frame. Reverse vehicle would not move. Shifted very hard through gears. Sometimes tacking at 3000 rpm. Took to a transmission specialist. Repaired at a cost of 2600. 00. Have since returned vehicle to same place for same issues plus transmission overheat light and leaking transmission fluid. Seat belts locked down for no reason. Would not retract. Called dealer, could not do anything because I was over restraint warranty by 3000 miles. Have replaced all 4 seat belt restraints. Front air bag light stays on or blinks, or is off. Called dealer, stated repair would not be covered due to mileage. I purchased this vehicle brand new June 2002. Today it has 65,00 miles on it. Is driven primarily on the highway for vacations. Have had several small repairs that were covered under extended warranty. I am very disappointed in the performance of this vehicles drive train and safety restraint system to include seat belts and air bag issues. With as many complaints I see on line about the transmission and front air bag issues, seems to me something should be done to help those of us that purchased in good faith what should have been a great vehicle. I have been a Ford/ Mercury owner since 1971. This is the first vehicle I have had that had major issues.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that various seat belts would not retract properly. She took the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions and they replaced the five retractors for different seats in the vehicle. The rear driver's side seat belt was replaced again several months after the original repair. Currently, the cause of the failure was unknown. The failure mileage was 4,403 and current mileage was 27,900. Updated 02-23-09 updated 02/24/09.
