Automatic Transmission Column Shift Problems of Mercury Mystique

When shifting gears lever jams. Also, can hear a grinding noise when shifting. Vehicle is hard to shift as though something is ready to snap. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that cable connector to shift was tangled. Wire was exposed, and had something to do with linkage and transmission. Please add VIN.

On several occassions since 11/2000 I have experienced the problem of my floor shift component locked in the park position. I understand that the recall information regarding this problem that my vehicle was not a part of the group for campaign 98v233000. My problem lies with why would I be experiencing the same problem that has been detected in other vehicles, but because my vehicle VIN # was not among the group that was notified of the recall, I should be burdened with the expense of replacing this component. I would just like a little further information regarding my concern. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

Gear shifter indicator malfunctions, and doesn't indicate the gear that the vehicle is in. There is a shift lever damage recall 98v233000, but this vehicle is not included in the recall due to VIN.
