3 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

Subframe of vehicle is severely rusted to the point where it is structurally unsound. Most of the body rot is covered by the plastic molding under the doors, and is not visible until the molding is removed. It seems that water and road salt must get trapped between the molding and metal leading to the extensive rust. The frame breaking while driving at highway speeds would lead to a catastrophic failure which could cause a potentially fatal accident.

4 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

The contact owns a 1999 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that excessive rust caused the steering column to snap while he was driving 45 mph. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the frame had not been coated correctly at production. The mechanic repaired the frame and steering column. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 15,700. Updated 2/22/11.

5 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/23/2010

Vehicle starting making front end noise, difficult to steer, unsafe handling. The subframe, engine cradle, deteriorated due to corrosion in area of front mounting bolt breaking the bolt completely free and no longer providing structural support. Similar corrosion is observable on filler tube and vent tube to gas tank. Vehicle has been parked as it is unsafe to drive because of engine cradle. Estimate of repair is approximately $1000. 00.

Failure Date: 08/03/2010

The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where she was informed that the sub frame was covered with rust. Since the vehicle was repaired she mentioned that she could still hear squeaking noises while driving. The failure and current mileages were 52,000. Updated 12/10/10. 7 Frame And Members problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 12/29/2008

While driving to work, I smelled burning plastic. I rolled up the window thinking it was another vehicle. A few minutes later I noticed an odd melting look on the rear windshield, and a stronger burning plastic smell. Immediately I turned off the rear defrost, and cracked the window to let the fumes escape. Approximately a mile later (while driving 70 mph) the rear windshield exploded. The glass initially stayed intact, but prior to me driving to the closest dealership (3 miles from that point), the shards began falling into the back seat of the vehicle. I am grateful there was no one in the back seat.

8 Frame And Members problem of the 1996 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 01/31/2002

A bolt holding the right front subframe came ripped away from its bracket. It caused the engine to pull to the right and ripped a vaccum line from the brake distribution assembly located on the firewall. I lost the power assist for the brakes and fortunately it happened at a slow speed. It cost me approximately $315. 00 to have the problem fixed.

11 Frame And Members problem of the 1996 Mercury Sable

This did not show up until around the summer of '97,when I bought the car. This is because,it only happens when the car has sat in sun for awhile. Then on the road at around 60mpr you get this high whistle, which seems to come from somewhere on the passenger side outside around the engine area. The noise varies depending on the speed(seems to stop under 55) and variations in the roadway. My own guess is that something expands in the heat of the sun and when air at a certain speed comes in contact it either vibrates or it's the air going through it. The dealer has looked, guessed it was a missing screw just below the windsheld(wrong!) and gave up. This may not sound like a safety hazzard but it is very distracting after several miles. And like I said it only seems to happen in the hot sun. Would appreciate any help you have to offer. It's driving my wife crazy. Thank you.

12 Frame And Members problem of the 1996 Mercury Sable

While driving engine collapsed due to rusting. This caused the frame to break. Also, when the engine collapsed the ball joints broke, causing the tires to disengage from the vehicle.
