6 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/01/2004

(1) I purchased my 2000 Mercury Sable GS v6 from my father with appx. 38,000 miles on it. My father and I kept it well maintained as required in the manufactures warranty guidelines. He originally bought it new from the Mercury dealership in farmington, mi which is now located in dearborn, mi called jack demmer Lincoln Mercury. When I purchased the car from my father the seatbelts were both working fine. (2)on the Mercury Sable both seat belt harnesses (seatbelt rotator) locks up preventing you to allow you to put on the seatbelt. Consequences can cause serious injury, or even death. (3) I contacted the dealership. They stated that the car has 64,000 miles on it and is out of the 36,000 mile warranty so they are not obligated to replace the belts. They did offer to replace both seat belts for $200. 00 per belt as they said they wouldn't fix them as its a safety issue. The car to this date has not been repaired. I am concerned that this is a problem in other Mercury Sables and would like it investigated if possible.

8 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/23/2004

The rear seat belts shoulder belts do not retract at all. This is a serious safety problem. After talking to dealership the warranty is only for 5 years 50000 miles. So is Ford saying that after this warranty is up on my 1999 Sable that my families life is worthless. . All seat belts should be warranted for the life of the car, not 5 years 50000 miles. . Shouldn't all satey related equipment in vehicles be warranted for life? there was a recall for the front shoulder belts on this vehicle. There should be a recall for the rear seatbelts also. They both have stopped working at the same time and that should say something is wrong with them. These seatbelts have not been abused or wear and tear is a bad call on this one. . This car is only is only 5 years old and wear and tear does not play into this at all. . This problem should be looked into. .

9 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

10 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 01/10/2004

Seat belt retractors are failing in order of most frequent use (e. G. Driver, front passenger, rear passengers). The driver's belt retractor fails to pull the seat belt back into the columnar storage area 100% of the time (front passenger belt 50% and rear passengers ~10%). This presents a safety hazard as the belts will not provide the life saving tension required during an accident. The belt hangs limp over the wearer. Seat belts are required to be worn by law. Yet, auto manufacturers are not required to warranty these parts for the life of the car. The great majority of manufacturers only warrant seat belts for 3 years or 36000 miles. As consumers, are we to believe that this means manufacturers only expect the seat belts to function during this time period. This is absurd and should be changed via legislation requiring auto makers to warranty legally required safety devices for the life of the car. It would force manufacturers to make these parts to last instead of engineering them to last until just after the warranty period is over.

11 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/12/2003

I purchased the used vehicle April 03. Early August, I went out to lunch with a friend-when he attempted to put on the vehicle seat belt in the front passenger seat it would not work. We drove his car instead. I thought it was a fluke. I decided to check the internet and located this problem as a manufacturer recall and figured it would be no problem for the dealer to take care of it. This problem continued to happen but because of my work schedule I was unable to get the vehicle to the dealer because of the hours of the service department. From August to date no one has been able to ride in the front seat. I was on vacation and I contacted the dealer to schedule a service appointment. I took the car in on 12/30/03 and was told that I needed to pay a $75 diagnostic fee as no information came up for this vehicle indicating a recall or a warranty. The warranty situation was corrected but I received a message from tonia cooper (service department) after I faxed over the recall information from NHTSA that my vehicle would not be covered under the recall. I thought this was absurd; I am experiencing the same problem that is noted on all of the documentation of the recall but because Ford neglected to include my VIN number no one would help me. What's worse is that I called fords' customer relations on 12/30/03 and spoke with syed who refused to give me a last name or an id# and he told me there was nothing I could do and no one outside of customer relations at the dealership that I could contact to get this matter resolved. I find it most irritationg that no one could conceive the notion that this VIN# (& perhaps others) were erroneously omitted from the recall. I looked at the 3 complaints from other owners & one has a VIN# very similiar to mine. Thank you for your assistance in this matter, I only wish that I could have resolved this matter with Ford directly. Passenger safety & michigan's "click it or ticket it" law has makes this an extrememly important issue!.

17 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 09/16/2002

Rental car Ford taurus, front pass seatbelt tightened would not release, cutting into throat. Returned car. Rec'd Mercury Sable, same problem. Was stuck driving 17 hours from in to CT with belt cutting into throat. Used belt properly. When leaning over to pick up item from floor, or glove compartment belt would deploy completely. Upon returning body to upright position, belt made clicking noises and tightened with every upright movement. Became extremely constricting. Driver had to release belt for 17 hour trip. Pass retracted it completely, deploy it to use it, and tried to stay still and not move. When movement occurred belt would reach it's end and start clicking and constricting with every tiny movement. Needless to say after 17 hours of driving and tightening, skin under belt area is very tender, throat is sore, almost choked, almost cut. For part of trip had to place seat in laydown position to alleviate throat constriction of belt. Mfg states 'that is the way dot set up the regulations, and we just follow them. . . Belts are made for us. . . . . No recalls. . . . . No adjustments can be made'. It is my understanding others had to cut off the belt. Even went to test drive them, same thing happened. Belt is made for child safety? some type of sensor? no accident occurred at any time. Belt is malfunctioning when deployed all the way by just bending over or moving around. Before someone gets seriously hurt, someone needs to recall and restyle these existing belts. Drivers belt did not have any type of problems. Bending and leaning over deployed it completely and no retracting occurred at all. Very dangerous having driver, driving and trying to release passenger belt, and passenger unbelted while traveling retracting and resetting belt. We were lucky we were not in an accident while dealing with the belt issue. As the belt was unbuckled numerous times over 17 hours. Call if you have any questions at 860-623-7774. In good faith, doreen alfano.

22 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1996 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

The seat belts on both sides of the front seat, driver's side and passenger's side became inoperable at approximately 50000 miles. We didn't notice that they were inoperable, only that the belts would catch in the door when we shut the door. After a while, after the warranty ran out, we realized that the reason that the belts were getting caught in the door was because they were not retracting properly. We took the car to the dealer, walser Lincoln-Mercury at the above address. The seat belts on both sides were replaced on 1/8/02. The passenger seat is used for less than half of the miles driven. I would not be surprised if one of the belts failed but don't think that both belts should fail. That seems like a manufacturing defect is likely.
