30 problems related to accelerator pedal have been reported for the 1999 Mercury Villager. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Purchased vehicle one week ago, since then whenever I am going from park to drive the vehicle accelerates on its own revving the engine at 5,000 rpms making it very hard to stop vehicle while applying the brakes. You have to shut vehicle off and then put it in park, then try it again. Sometimes it works and other times its worse!!! this vehicle is very unsafe and should be taken off the streets, or fixed properly by the manufacturer!!! I am very scared to drive this vehicle with my kids in it, for we might have an accident. This has happened everyday since we purchased this vehicle!!!!.
1999 Mercury Villager- gas pedal sticks. Car also smells like rotten eggs after it has warmed up. Sometimes the smell goes away.
The throttle sticks in the closed position, requiring an inordinate amount of force on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle. Once sufficient force is applied to overcome the resistance, the vehicle will lunge forward unexpectedly, and has the potential to cause damage or injury. This problem has supposedly been corrected by the dealer cleaning the throttle body assembly, at my expense. However, based on the reports from other complainants, the problem is likely to recur and be a continual hazard.
Almost every time I drive the van, the accelerator has at least once incident when it is non-responsive. I have to hit the accelerator with my foot hard to get the car to move. If the car does respond then we accelerate rapidly. Sometimes it takes more than one depression on the accelerator to get action. If a car is coming toward me I cannot rapidly avoid an accident. I cannot depend on the car to perform. This is a definite hazzard which needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. This is a 1999 Mercury Villager van.
While stopping at a light and attempting to accelerate gas pedal stuck. As a result, vehicle surged forward and the tires spun out. This problem has occurred repeatedly since about 40k miles, currently at 82k miles, this would occur at least one in five times the accelerator pedal was depressed.
1. Gas pedal on 1999 Mercury Villager sticks or does not always respond when pressed. Unit has done so since bought new/repaired once by dealer but continues to do this off and on/you never no when it will or won't respond.
Gas pedal sticks on my 1999 Mercury Villager and is very unsafe. I transport my three children every day in this van. I thought I purchased a great family vehicle but it seems just like many of the other complaints on this site my pedal started to stick after just hitting the 30,000 mile mark. Coincidence??? I don't think so. . . . . Just had my van in for thousands of dollars of service and now this occurs and I am told it's going to cost me at least $800. 00 to repair the throttle on my 5 yr old van with only 34,000 miles on it. How is this possible???.
The accelerator of my Mercury Villager sticks. This problem occurred previously and the dealer first cleaned the throttle body and then in January 2003 replaced the throttle body at a cost of about $400. 00. Less than a year later the problem has occurred again. The accelator always sticks. I will now have to pay again to have a new throttle body installed. I noticed on this web site that this is a very common complaint for 1999 Mercury Villagers and it's twin the Nissan quest, along with 1999 Mercury mountaineers, & Mercury cougars. I can't understand why Ford isn't being required to do something about such a dangerous condition. I've had many near accidents.
On my 1999 Mercury Villager minivan, the gas pedal sticks when trying to accelerate from a stop or after coasting. I have to step hard on the gas pedal to accelerate. This is unsafe because when the van moves it moves to fast, causing problems if there is a car in front of me.
Gas pedal sticks. Frequently after coming to complete stop at a light, when pushing down on gas pedal, pedal goes down, but nothing happens. Usually, pedal must be pumped several times before it engages. Had it cleaned out by dealer who said it was not covered under the extended warranty and cost over $200. 00. I refuse to pay to have it repaired/cleaned again. This is a safety concern and Ford motor company should replace the deffective parts. Some day I will get rear-ended.
My 1999 Mercury Villager, had the throttle body replaced at 23,580 miles, and now, at 76,000 miles, it needs to be replaced again. Considerable foot force is needed to overcome a "stuck" accelerator pedal, so the vehicle jumps forward from a stopped condition. This is unsafe and annoying!.
When the gas pedal was pressed, there was a delay in acceleration. The consumer had to pump the gas pedal to get the vehicle to move. When the gas pedal was pressed, there was a delay in acceleration. The consumer had to pump the gas pedal to get the vehicle to move.

Accelerator pedal becomes real hard, and consumer has to put alot of force to push pedal in. This problem occurs whenever consumer is driving. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.
Consumer states that when attempting to accelerate from a stop, the gas pedal must be punched due to the gas pedal sticking.
A few weeks later, after purchasing my car. I took it to the dealership complaining about my accelarator pedal getting stuck. Their response, was they could not find a problem. This will be the 4 year with this problem.
Gas pedal sticks on many Villagers and is very unsage. Dealer said that it is common and costs $700 to repair throttle body--this sounds like a manufacturers defect.
Gas pedal gets stuck whenever consumer is trying to acclerate. Has not contacted dealer.
In the newspaper today I read about sticking accelerator pedal, which I have experienced after about 1 year of ownership. I may have received a recall, but I don't remember. However, the problem continues and creates a dangerous situation because the pedal will not always go down when needed. His is an intermittent problem. Is there any information where Mercury will fix this problem?.
When pressing on accelerater vehicle will not go. When at a stop sign and getting ready to accelerate, pedal will not push down, if wanting to pass someone, accelerator pedal will not go down. Consumer feels this is unsafe because kids are present in vehicle, and someone could easily run into the back of vehicle.
The gas pedal sticks; I have taken it to the dealer on several occassions and they say it is a problem with this car. They sprayed the butterfly valve with wd40 and unstick it. It only lasts a couple of months. Then back to the dealer.
Intermittently vehicle experienced non-acceleration when applying the accelerator pedal. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that parts were on back order since January 2000. Can NHTSA share some light on this matter.
Gas pedal is hard to push. It becomes stuck at times, causing sudden acceleration. Deaeer has been contacted.
Consumer noticed that throttle body needed replacing. Acclerator pedal stuck in middle of intersection causing loss of forward movement. This forced driver to apply great force to accelerator pedal in order for vehicle to accelerate. Also, part was on national back order. The replacement parts are scarce due to the problem being common.
The gas pedal stuck while driving. Yh.
