Failure Date: 02/24/2008

Purchased vehicle one week ago, since then whenever I am going from park to drive the vehicle accelerates on its own revving the engine at 5,000 rpms making it very hard to stop vehicle while applying the brakes. You have to shut vehicle off and then put it in park, then try it again. Sometimes it works and other times its worse!!! this vehicle is very unsafe and should be taken off the streets, or fixed properly by the manufacturer!!! I am very scared to drive this vehicle with my kids in it, for we might have an accident. This has happened everyday since we purchased this vehicle!!!!.

4 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 1998 Mercury Villager

Failure Date: 10/12/2005

The vehicle automatic door locks automatically lock the doors this has happened innumerable occasions. This began shortly after purchase of the vehicle in 1998, and continues today. The doors ar not to lock if the keys are in the ignition, and they do. This has occurred while driving the vehicle, while it is parked, when entering, and exiting the vehicle. The interior doors do not override the locks, and in an emergency, one would be unable to exit the vehicle if they were to lock. Usually this occurs most often when the doors are being closed; and if the battery is unhooked, and reconnected, it may remedy the situation for several days. The rear automatic windows go out when you press the buttons to make them go in, and the rear wiper stays down as if the window is unlocked. That can be remedied by unlocking the window, and relatching it, it usually stays up for 2-3 days. When you attempt to retract the rear windows, they will not go in automatically. I have contacted putnam Lincoln Mercury in fort smith, arkansas, and I do not have the money to complete these repairs which could possibly cause injury or death if the doors locked someone in. In other news, the gas pedal is sticking also, this happens when you take off in the vehicle, and happens every time. This has also been reported to the dealership.

5 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 1999 Mercury Villager

Failure Date: 08/22/2005

The throttle sticks in the closed position, requiring an inordinate amount of force on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle. Once sufficient force is applied to overcome the resistance, the vehicle will lunge forward unexpectedly, and has the potential to cause damage or injury. This problem has supposedly been corrected by the dealer cleaning the throttle body assembly, at my expense. However, based on the reports from other complainants, the problem is likely to recur and be a continual hazard.

6 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 1999 Mercury Villager

Failure Date: 06/30/2005

Almost every time I drive the van, the accelerator has at least once incident when it is non-responsive. I have to hit the accelerator with my foot hard to get the car to move. If the car does respond then we accelerate rapidly. Sometimes it takes more than one depression on the accelerator to get action. If a car is coming toward me I cannot rapidly avoid an accident. I cannot depend on the car to perform. This is a definite hazzard which needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. This is a 1999 Mercury Villager van.

I thought I purchased a great family vehicle but it seems just like many of the other complaints on this site my pedal started to stick after just hitting the 30,000 mile mark. Coincidence??? I don't think so. . . . . Just had my van in for thousands of dollars of service and now this occurs and I am told it's going to cost me at least $800. 00 to repair the throttle on my 5 yr old van with only 34,000 miles on it. Less than a year later the problem has occurred again. The accelator always sticks. I will now have to pay again to have a new throttle body installed. I noticed on this web site that this is a very common complaint for 1999 Mercury Villagers and it's twin the Nissan quest, along with 1999 Mercury mountaineers, & Mercury cougars.
