Accelerating after being stopped at a red light, lost power steering, smoke came out of hood, engine temperature redlined, and battery light came on.
Sudden loss of power steering when approaching a busy intersection. I barely made it through a few curbs before entering a parking lot. I let the engine cool off for 30 minutes, then the power steering came back on. I decided to go straight to the dealership, about 3 miles highway, and about 1 mile from the dealership I lost the power steering again. Forcing the car through the last few turns, driving slowly, I made it to the dealership. The replacement pump & fan set me back about $1,500.

Hi there is a problem with my Mini Cooper losing power steering , I have lost the power steering few times this week and when I took it to the BMW near my area they told me its a known problem with Mini cars from 2001 to 2005 as the psp ( power steering pump ) on the models have a fault and you may lose the steering power at any time . I almost had 2 accidents because of this week and they are asking my to pay £550 for a new pump . If they have a faulty pump and they now it can risk lives they should recall it or offer to fix this for people who are affected .
Vehicle lost power steering. I had the power steering assist cooling fan replaced twice and the relay switch for the cooling fan. It worked fine for a time. Now (10,000 miles later) is intermittent.
Lost power steering with burning smell and lots of smoke. As evidenced on the attached document, the engine wiring harness was burnt. The car could have lost all power. The repair bill was $4097. 91. I was without a car for weeks with no loaner car offered. National Mini Cooper denied that this was an issue. There is now a pending recall. The new parts might also need to be replaced. I was driving on the highway when this occurred.
