1 Ignition problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

The power steering pump stops operating while the vehicle is in motion. It has happened three times to date: the first incident was at low speed in a parking structure; the second incident happened at freeway speed; the most recent incident occurred on a surface street while decelerating to a stop. In each case, control of the car was maintained but was very difficult. The pump function was restored by stopping and cycling the vehicle ignition to off and then restarting the engine.

2 Ignition problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 11/17/2011

I stopped at a grocery store on the way home from work at approx. 6:30 pm on 11/17/11. I parked the car, turned off the ignition and locked it. When I exited the store approximately 13-15 minutes later, I found the car a smoldering shell surrounded by firefighters. It appeared to have spontaneously gone up in flames. Firefighters could not determine a cause. There was no indication of any problems with the car prior to this incident (car performed "normally" and there were no alarm or flash indicators on the console suggesting a problem. ).
