While driving on a 2 lane 2 way (1 per direction) rural road very windy on my daily commute into my office I lost power steering. I was on a straightaway and luckily not in a curve because the steering instantly became tight and at low speeds is almost unable to steer. I say almost because I I am able to drive with great effort and attention however any evasive movement for an emergency may cause me to be involved in an accident. I have seen mimi had a recall for the exact issue in canada but has not had a recall in the USA while we are having the exact problems. Mini also changed the steering pump/fan/wiring in the 2006 models which is the last year of production on the exact model I own. Obviously they (Mini) is aware and tried to fix the issue on their end without a recall.
While driving my Mini Cooper S '05, I suddenly lost power steering, which made it extremely difficult to steer. I feel threatened driving my car.
Electric power steering pump stop functioning while driving. Sudden lost of power steering. Difficult to steer. This is the second pump that was replaced on the vehicle about two years ago. The first pump stop working about two years ago.

The car loses power steering intermittently and it makes it extremely difficult to turn. It is very dangerous when it happens on the intersection and I can't turn the car. I drive with my child and this freaks me out. It happened several times and in may 2013 I received Mini recall/extension of warranty letter and called Mini dealer in sacramento CA and they put me to the recording machine, where I left a message regarding extension of warranty by Mini and to schedule replacement of power steering - no reply. Called them twice, they seem to ignore my calls. Very upset with dealer's ignorance.

Lost power steering while driving my 2005 Mini Cooper S. All of a sudden, have no power steering. Very difficult to steer, but not impossible. Thank god I was not in a place that this could have caused an accident. I note that I can turn off the motor, then turn it back on and the steering is ok for a few minutes, then goes out again. I love my Mini cooper, but this is a serious safety problem. I am afraid to drive it now, if I can't count on the steering to function correctly.
While driving on the freeway (I-684) at 65 mph the vehicle lost power steering assist approx. 30 miles from my home. This made the car difficult to control, especially when taking turns in and off of exits. Much force was required to maintain control and steering the vehicle for the rest of the trip home. I will report this to Mini on Monday.
The contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper S. While driving 35 mph, the contact stated the vehicle lost all power steering. The dealer informed the contact that the power steering pump failed and to replace the pump as well as the battery to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 116,000 and the failure mileage was 115,900.
Lost power steering on freeway at 70 mile an hour. Next day it work for 40 miles then failed again on freeway at 70 miles an hour, there is no warning or fluid loss, just complete steering loss . Then it is very hard to control.
After stopping at a red light, when I accelerated to make a left turn, lost power steering. Drove to work next day with no power steering, but on the way home, it came back on. However, when I turn off the engine, the electric motor kept on running. Had to disconnect battery to keep it from draining and/or cause a fire.
I was exiting the freeway when my battery indicator light went on; I lost power steering and saw a large amount of smoke coming from under the hood. The Mini dealership has determined that the power steering module failed, and subsequently burned the wiring harness. There have been several reports of faulty manufacturing in regard to this part from bbc in uk, as well as on many forums, in particular north american motoring.

In September 2011, I was driving my 2003 Mini Cooper S at 55mph on a rural two lane highway when I experienced a momentary loss power steering of power steering. This resulted in the wheel becoming very difficult to turn. When power steering returned (without warning), my car swerved but I was able to keep it on the road. This happened several times over the next 20 miles before I lost power steering and it did not return. When I arrived home, I checked the power steering pump and it was non-operational. I replaced the pump and its dedicated cooling fan. In August 2012 (125000 miles), I again lost power steering at highway speeds. The second failure was identical to the first (suddenly came and went before cutting out and not returning).
I started to hear this winding or loud humming sound, did not know where it was coming from. . It was examined by a mechanic,,and it was the power steering pump failing, and the electric cooling fan failing. Read about many problems with this steering pump on 2005 Mini's. The cost was $1226. 00 to replace. Even though I did not lost power steering, it could have happened at anytime.
I have lost the power steering in my 2004 Mini Cooper S at least ten times within the last month. On each occasion the power steering was absent when the car was started. After shutting down the car and restarting, the power steering came back. I took the car to the dealership to get this fixed, and they said that the power steering was not getting enough electrical power and replaced my battery. However, after leaving the dealership and while parking, the power steering failed, again. After restarting the car two times, the power steering came back on. I will be returning to the dealership this evening.
Driving approximately 25 mph and vehicle lost power steering. . . . Made it home. . . Checked all fluid levels. . . All okay. . . . Got back in the vehicle the next morning to take to service station and power steering was working again. . . Garage could not find problem. . . Scared to drive it now for fear of loss of steering again!.
Lost power steering intermittently last month while driving and now the fan stays on and runs the engine till the battery is dead. I need to have it jumped everytime I want to drive it. Mini stated they will not replace it for free "they don't care if there is an investigation, unit were ordered to fix it the cost is on the customer".
On Tuesday, 5 April 2011, I drove my 2005 Mini Cooper S about 20 - 25 miles heading for work - I made a brief stop for coffee. The car operated properly during this drive, however, when I left the coffee shop I notice a very acrid smell in the area. When I got in my car and started it the "battery" indicator light was on. I check the owner's manual and it said this indicated the battery was not being charged. As the car was running I decided I could drive it to work and then address the charging issue. When I back out of the parking spot I realized I had also lost my power steering. I was concerned that my car might not be cooling as well, so moved the car to a spot further out in the parking lot to allow for a tow truck to pick it up. I realized the acrid smoke smell was still with me and decided to check under the hood. When I lifted the hood I found there was a fire in the engine compartment. Fortunately I carried a fire extinguisher and was able to put the fire out - the fire department also responded. The car was towed to sandia Mini cooper in albuquerque nm and I have since been informed that the power steering pump malfunctioned and caused the fire. From some research I have done on line it appears this is not an issue isolated to my vehicle, but that it was occurred in a number of cases.
My 2005 Mini Cooper S suddenly lost power steering as I was driving almost causing an accident. I've not had it in for repairs yet, but researching on the internet it seems many consumers have had the same problem. I have even read of those whose car caught on fire and am fearful of the same happening to me not to mention the extremely high cost of repair. Mini should recall the 2005 and fix this issue.
I was driving very slowly into the drive thru burger king and I lost power steering and it became very difficult to control the car I could not get it to go the direction I wanted it to go so I ended up crashing into the curb. Another time this happened was when I hit a patch of ice my car lost power steering a few seconds later and I had to restart my car, but it did come back on.
Lost power steering and ability to make turn easily.
My 2004 Mini Cooper S suddenly and without warning lost its power steering. I had to have it towed to the mechanic who said the whole steering was shot. That is when I found out that Mini has had a lot of these failures. If I had been on a curve and at any faster speed I may have been seriously hurt, and now BMW won't even fix the car! this is not right especially when they have known there is problem, what is it going to take a few people getting killed like with the Toyota brake problem? make them do something to fix this problem.
2005 Mini Cooper S intermittently loses power steering, this happens without warning and renders the vehicle nearly impossible to steer. The first time it happened was on an elevated exit ramp and almost caused me to strike the safety wall. After a drastic slow down I was able to strong arm the vehicle back on course. This has happened several times since - most dangerous when it cuts out and the randomly comes back on causing severe over-steering.
The contact owns a 2002 Mini cooper. The contact stated that when traveling at various speeds, he would lose power steering intermittent without warning. He noticed that the power steering cooling fan would remain active without power to the vehicle. The dealer or manufacturer was not notified nor was the failure diagnosed or the vehicle repaired. The current mileage was 65,096. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. Updated 06/24/11 updated 06/30/jb.
My 2005 Mini Cooper S appears to have lost its power steering. Just happened today (11/22/10) as I was driving on the interstate. I did not lose control or anything like that. It just became exceedingly difficult to steer the car.
I own a 2004 Mini Cooper S and lost the power steering while driving on the highway. There were no leaks detected but the ps canister was empty. The Mini was purchased new from crown Mini in richmond, va. We are the only owners of the Mini. My wife is afraid to drive the Mini now and we wanted to report the problem as soon as possible. I have received no help from Mini after sending them an email and calling them.
2005 Mini Cooper S, 50,000 miles on the odometer, loses power steering which causes significant problems at slow speeds. The car will still steer at faster speeds, but with very heavy, unpredictable response. The problem began with an increased droning noise when the steering wheel was in the neutral position which would diminish when the steering wheel was turned. The problem was intermittent, and therefore, I thought it was related to a low fluid level issue. I went to the dealership and purchased "special" steering fluid, and no mention was made to me about any steering pump defect. I installed the fluid to the recommended level with no change in response. I telephoned the dealership service department and the person who answered the phone said he knew the problem, and that I needed a new steering pump, cooling fan, hoses, and reservoir, and the cost of the work was $1600. 00. I then did internet research and learned that this problem is frequently experienced in 2004 and 2005 Mini cooper models. I then telephoned Mini cooper's corporate complain department and I was told to spend the money to repair the car. This problem is undoubtedly a persistent defect, and should be the subject of recall repair program.
Driving home yesterday, my 2003 Mini Cooper S suddenly lost power steering as I was going around a curve. I had to muscle the car back into my lane to avoid hitting the car in the lane beside me. I was about half a mile from home and made it there without further incident -- but turning at slow speeds was dangerously difficult. I contacted the Mini repair shop this morning and they said that this intermittent unexpected loss of steering control is unfortunately somewhat common with Minis.
The power steering fails on the car. It has happened multiple times. It can happen when you first start the car, or it can happen afteryou have been driving for some time. All of the sudden you lose your power steering and it is very difficult to steer without the power steering. I am a female and I have to use both arms to get the car to turn without the power steering. I am afraid that the power steering is going to go out at a bad time and I won't be able to get the car to turn quick enough and I could cause an accident.
On 5/26/10 lost power steering while driving on the long island expressway. 141,000 miles on car. Power steering electronic pump replacement cost $ 1005. 00.
Lost power steering unexpectedly in my car. Power steering pump and fan were replaced 6/3/2010. On 6/29/2011, I again lost power steering unexpectedly mileage- 96250 . Power steering pump and fan were replaced again. On 6/26/2012 I yet again lost power steering - mileage -111834, pump and fan were replaced for the 3rd time. Each time the fan had failed and the pump overheated.
My 2002 Mini Cooper S had an incident approximately six months ago when I completely lost power steering while going a low rate of speed. I was able to muscle the steering for a couple of minutes until the power steering returned. This occurred once more but very briefly in front of my house some time later. I did not do anything about this problem either time but I saw a story in USA today on Mini steering problems (29 sept) and instantly recalled my problem. I am certain it is related to the Mini steering issue now being investigated by the NHTSA.
