Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Mini cooper. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle began overheating and smoke began coming from hood of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where the water pump was replaced. After the repair, the power steering ceased without warning upon starting the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 15v660000 (steering) which she linked to her failure. The contact then called Mini of des moines 9900 hickman rd, des moines, IA 50325 where she was informed that her vehicle was not included in any recalls. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and gave her the same information. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000. Jo.

Purchased this car used with low miles. Shortly after purchase I noticed the steering on my vehicle got a little harder to steer, didn't think to much about it. Then the radiator fan would not turn off when the vehicle was off. Took the car in to two different mechanics to find the problem. Found out it was the power steering pump went out causing the coolant reservoir to go out. This could cause extreme safety hazards when driving on the freeway and the steering freezes!! I contacted BMW after hearing there was a recall for this same problem. I was told we missed the recall time frame. I have low miles, 60,000. The recall expired in 2017. Well, my care was not having the issues. I don't feel comfortable selling the car and handing the problem to another consumer. This recall should be extended as it could be an unpleasant result.

I am a proud owner of a 2005 Mini Cooper S with 108k miles. Recently I experienced the infamous ehps pump failure that the pump will continue running after shutting off the car. It drains the battery completely so I hooked up my battery charger to it overnight. After performing some google researching on this subject matter, I realized Mini had issued an extended warranty on the ehps system in 2013 and later superseded by the recall 15v-660. Unfortunately my production date (August of 05) does not fall in the range of the recall. The recall covers production between September 2001 to February 2005. Further reading on this issue, many owners expressed that they have success on cleaning the dust inside the pump to solve the shorting issue within the pump. So I disconnect the battery, removed the pump from the car and start taking the pump apart. After removing the cover, I realized the short had already melted down one of the brush (the gold color piece in img_9730) and some other components inside the pump. My research showed that this pump is the exact same one that was used as the recall one, BMW part number 6769961-02 (img_9733). Later on the part number changed to 6769961-03. So I wondered why my car isn't part of the us recall. I also found that the transport canada recall #2012029 does provide extended warranty (12 years / 200k km) on the pump and pump cooling fan for all 2002-2005 cooper and Cooper S in canada. I hope someone can further investigate this potential fire hazard issue for all affected production units that is outside of the recall. It is definitely a safety concern for all Mini owners and passengers that utilize this ehps pump.
I purchased this Mini Cooper S on March 16, 2016 and it had 47,282 miles on it. I also bought a limited 90 day warranty offered by buddy's auto sales of springfield, mo. I trailered the car to phoenix where my son was to attend a motorcycle mechanic school in October. On October 07, 2016 we unloaded it from the trailer and parked it at a hotel. The next morning my son (a certified mechanic) went outside to check on the car and the brake light was on. Assuming someone was in the car, he ran to it and found that it was full of smoke and smelled of melting wires/metal. He got a pair of pliers from the hotel and unhooked the battery before the car could burn itself to the ground. As soon as we could get a dealership on the phone, we had it towed there. They informed me that there was a large recall on BMW power steering pumps and they looked it up to see if mine would be covered. It wasn't. It cost $3,823. 22 to get the car back and they had the vehicle until October 14, 2016, causing me to miss my flight home. If this is a wide-spread problem, why wasn't my Mini covered? after having the power steering pump replaced on my Mini Cooper S and finally receiving the car back after a week, I drove it from tempe to phoenix where I was staying and heard a loud pop noise as soon as I got it home. There was smoke coming out from under the hood and the car wouldn't steer. I called the dealership where I had just had it repaired and they said that I would once again have to pay the tow bill to get it back to them but that if they found that it was their fault for not fixing something, they would reimburse me for the tow bill. After receiving the car for the second time, they claimed that the power steering hose was an unrelated problem to the power steering pump. I had to pay the tow bill as well as the repair bill.

On 2/11/2016 I got home from work and I parked my 2005 Mini Cooper S (53,000 miles) on the driveway, turn off car and stayed with my kids & wife since they were waiting for me outside, my wife notice a sound & smoke coming from the car, the smoke were coming from the engine, I immediately open the hood & there was more smoke coming out, the headlights & all the lights turned on & stared flickering, also the wipers turned on, couple of seconds later the botom of the engine was engulfed in flames. My wife ran to get the water hose & I were able to put the fire out, we were lucky that I didn't walk inside the house like I always do, it could have been a horrible tragedy for me, my family and even our neighbors. The next day I had the car towed to my mechanic who after an inspection found out if was the power steering pump that got on fire and damaged all the wires around it, since he is a Mini specialist he told us about a recall for that specific part, but to our disappointment he ran our VIN # and found that our car is excluded from that recall since its a late 2005 production. That exactly same thing happend to us with the actuators, one day while my wife was shopping with my kids, they just got locked inside the vehicle with the windows rolled up, it was a summer day and luckily she was able to get out through the back trunk, we contacted Mini because there is also a recall for the actuators and they also excluded our car saying that it was a late 2005 production and were not able to get the recall. The way we see it Mini is not taking responsibility for their defective components, it is not fair since I have no way to find out if my car was build with not defective parts, obviously it was. I am terrified by the idea this could have been worst since we r always driving with our kids. U need to do something about this & make Mini liable for these safety issues.
Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that while in park, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the front of the vehicle after the vehicle was turned off. The contact had to disconnect the battery cable to get the noise to stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the power steering assist pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 103,000. Oo.
Tl-the contact owns a 2002 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph and making a turn, there was a complete loss of power steering without warning. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the power steering pump would need to be replaced. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v66000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000. Js.
My Mini cooper has a problem with the power steering pump that will eventually cause an accident. I noticed that 2002 through 2005 has been recalled because of this issue but not 2006? and now I have an issue with my power steering?.
Simply driving to the store on my day off the power steering abrubtly stopped, making the vehicle extremely hard to control. I turned around and headed back home slowly. I parked it and researched the issue. First I found out how expensive a new pump was. Then I had to wait till I could afford to buy one. But even the new one does not work. I installed it yesterday 18 Apr 2015. I followed strict instructions and made sure everything was clean and secured. But when I lowered the car and started it the new pump did not operate at all, hence the car is still unusable.
I was driving my daughter to school when it first happened, the wheel got so tight and I hit the curb. Thank god I was in a school zone and therefore I was driving slow. After that, I noticed that same day that my battery was drained when I was leaving from work. I got a jump but then it happened again when I stopped for grosseries. I figured something must be wrong with the battery (which is farely new) or the alternator. I took my car to a shop and they diagnosed the battery and the alternator was fine. But they also said there was a stranged noise coming from my power steering pump. I bought power steering fluid thinking that was the reason, but after I poured some its still the same. I started researching and I found out a lot of people are having this same issue and its a deffective issue for this Mini generation.

Was about to park my car and all of sudden the steering began feeling tight. It seems that all assistance with the power steering was lost. Upon investigation over the internet it seems that the power steering pump is blown. Fortunately, I was not driving fast, but this can cause a potential fatal injury.
I bought my daughter a 2006 Mini Cooper S a little over a year ago. Today I decided to drive it to work here at fort hood, texas. A little over an hour after I got to work I decided to go get breakfast so when I walked out of my office I heard a car alarm going off and when I rounded the corner I saw my daughter’s car billowing smoke! I ran inside to get help and was able to find tools to disconnect the battery. I raised the hood and was meet with a lot of heat, smoke and a strong odor of burnt plastic. The car wasn't running and like I stated, had been sitting for over an hour. After conducting research online I found out Mini USA had recalled several Mini coopers for the power steering pump that had the same exact symptoms. After calling the closest dealership, an hour away, and Mini USA I was told that my car was not part of this recall and I am left to pay for this repair myself. The dealership quoted me a cost of $1000 to replace the power steering pump. During my online research I have found many other Mini owners with the same year model that had the same problem. It seems that Mini USA isn't wanting to fully cover the repairs. I am glad I wasn't driving down the highway when this happened!.
Failure to powersteering started acting up in January of 2014 after I got my O2 senor replaced. Was told to continued to drive car because the O2 sensor needed to recabrilate itself. So now in April 9th 2014, while getting ready to take off for work,I could not steer the car, called aaa to have car towed to dealership. This is when I was informed it was in fact the power steering pump, and that it would cost me 1700 to replace, im outraged.
The power steering pump stopped working the first time when I stopped to get a sandwich. When I restarted the car to drive off the steering was very heavy. I shut the engine off once again so I could look under the hood to check things out but everything looked fine so I restarted the engine to try to drive off again and the steering still was very heavy. No power assist. This has happened four times since, one time while I was driving.
The power steering pump on my 2005 Mini Cooper S failed, making it extremely difficult to maneuver the car safely in traffic. I was able to get the car to a service shop and later discovered that this is a very common problem. I called Mini, and they told me that the VIN number for my car was not one covered by the extended warranty for this problem, even though my car is a model year 2005. They offered no financial assistance whatsoever to help me replace the part. A new part was quoted as 1300 dollars, and that was aside from the labor. For cost reasons, it looks like I will have to install a refurbished part instead, which gives me concerns about future failures.
I had issue with the steering wheel pump a year ago, and I replaced it. But last night when I was driving home, the steering wheel wouldn't turn and I almost got into a car accident. Luckily traffic was slow and I was close to my house. Unfortunately, it was extremely hard for me to make any turn. I had to call a towing company and my car is now at the Mini dealer in chicago. I already spent over 2 thousand dollars a year ago and I don't understand why my car is having these issues again.
We have had the power steering and fan go out about 3 times on this car. We have owned it new from 2002. There was a recal and we only received $525 dollars when we spend over $2000. Why would we not receive a full refund as we had the work done always at the Mini dealer and we had two receipts from the dealer showing the defect. My understanding is that the warranty is not increased to 13 years and 150000 miles. When the defect happens the car gets noisey from the pump and when it fails the steering becomes sluggish. Why would they be allowed to only reimburse part of the amount when this is such a big issue. $2000 for steeing repairs on a $27,000 dollar car should not be tolerated.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that when turning in either direction, the power steering assist would sporadically fail as the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated that the power steering pump and fan needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000.
My power steering pump had been losing fluid, randomly continuing to run after shutting the car off and finally gave out two or three times while driving. I received a letter in the mail and that stated the pump had an extended warranty on the item. When I contacted the dealer to have work performed, I was told to continue adding fluid since this was not a formal recall item. I advised them the pump had failed twice (at that time) and they still insisted I refill the fluid and I would be fine. This seems like a cheap way to avoid a recall and they're not actually fixing the issue. This needs to be reviewed again and BMW/Mini needs to fix these issues before a catastrophic event happens that costs more than a stressful situation.

5/18/13 - after parking the car, the power steering pump continued to operate when the key was removed from the ignition. The key was inserted back into the ignition switch and turned to the "on" position. The power steering pump stopped running. 5/28/13 - when returning to work after lunch the car started perfectly and no problems were apparent. I pulled up to a stop light and sat waiting on the light to turn green. When the light changed I started accelerating in 1st gear and noticed that the steering was very heavy. I immediately pulled over to make sure that the pump was not overheating. The pump has completely failed at this point and the car is able to drive, albeit dangerously.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the power steering system malfunctioned. The steering wheel then became tight and became difficult to maneuver. The contact took the vehicle to dealer but did not diagnose the failure. The contact then took the vehicle to a local mechanic. The mechanic stated that the steering pump and pump cooling fan was defective. The mechanic replaced both the steering pump and pump cooling fan. The failure mileage was 52,000.
The power steering pump doesn't shut off when the car does. The pump ran until the battery died.
The power steering pump on my 2005 Mini Cooper S failed, making it extremely difficult to drive the car. A service shop indicated this is a common problem for the Mini's. My is out of the warantee, howvere it only has 45k miles. When I called BMW/ Mini north America to discuss a remedy but they told me the VIN number for my car was not one covered by the extended warranty for this problem, while my car is a 2005 with very low milage they will not offer any assistance whatsoever to help me replace the part as my cars production date is June 2005, which is past the production date for cars getting the extended warantee on p/s pumps. It seams unscroplous to hide from responsability of faulty parts, also potential safty issue. While my car may be produced a few monhs after the production date from the cars they are willing to warantee, it apperars I am suffering from same issues as the otheres they are waranteeing. Verry discuraging BMW/Mini.
Power steering randomly goes out on car. Low-speed fan has seized, damaging power steering pump. Car has no power steering at all.
Hello, I had been experience problems with the power steering (loosing power) of my Mini Cooper S 2004 model. In Jan 2013, I brought my 2004 Mini Cooper S for the replacement of the power-assit steering function, which include power steering hose ($56. 25), power steering pump ($710. 00) and labor ($315. 00). In may 2013, I received a notice for the repair expense reimbursement from Mini. Apparentiy this problem is known (but unknow to me) for Mini model year 2002-2205. I submitted the remibursement request and received the return receipt on June 10, 2013. Since then I have attempted to reach to Mini customer relation by phone (1-866-275-6464) 4 times and still have not received the reimbursement. I am writing this letter to ask for your assisstance. Mini should live up to standard and reimburse my expense. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. Sincerely yours, lan nguyen.
Parked vehicle in home garage and the power steering pump continued to run even when key is removed. I was familiar with this issue as many other owners have experienced it and reported. Refer to NHTSA action number : ea11005. The pump will continue to run until battery depletes or fire occurs. There is no cooling provided by dedicated cooling fan when vehicle is off. I disconnected the battery to stop pump from overheating.
The Mini cooper was sitting in the garage. My family noticed a distinct burning smell. We did not know where is was coming from. The burning smell was traced to the garage, but still did not identify the source. The next day when the vehicle was driven, there was no power steering. Upon inspection and removal of the power steering pump, all the electrical connections to the unit were melted. The power steering unit and the wiring harness leading to the unit are damaged and must be replaced. In conclusion the unit drew power while the car was off and fried the electrical connections.
Power steering pump is beginning to fail. From reports I have read I am worried that the car will catch on fire and in turn catch my house on fire.
Was driving along the road and came up on a turn when the steering locked up. Put all of my weight into the steering wheel to keep from jumping the median. Scared the life out of me. Immediately pulled over to figure out what happened. Turned the car off, then back on and it seemed fine. Then getting on the freeway, I was on the clover-leaf and it locked up again so I put all of my weight into it again, then it suddenly released. With the sudden jerk/movement (and it has done this a few times) someday I know it will cause the car to flip. The power steering seems to work in phases: it will be fine for a couple days, then its intermittent/gone for a week or 2. The past few days, it has sounded like the engine fan was engaged even though I had not been for a strenuous drive. I think it was actually the pump not turning off when the car was turned off. This morning I got to my car to find the battery completely drained. . . An apparent short in the power steering pump (and/or fan) killed it.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that the electrical power steering pump caught on fire, melting all of the wires. The fire department was not contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 110,000. Kmj.
As I was pulling away from a stop sign, I realized that I couldn't turn the steering wheel. I put the car in reverse and went back and forth trying to see if something was stuck. I did this a couple times, then realized my power steering was out. I checked the fluids and they were fine. Took the car to a mechanic and they ran diagnostic tests and determined the power steering pump was faulty.
I was exiting the interestate and the ramp curved to the right, as I began to negotiate the curve I noticed I had no power steering at all. I reached my destination about 15 minutes later and had no power steering assitance at all the entire time. I parked the vehichle and did not use it again until 9/3/12 and the steering appeared to be working properly again. In reading the investigative study I noted that it may be due to an error in the internal electronics and may also result in a continuous running of the power steering pump. Last year altmost to the day, the electrical system went haywire and the car would not steer and had what seemed like power surge and after shutting the car off and removing the key the car continued to make a clicking sound and the windows rolled down by themselves. I could not get the car to restart and had it towed to the dealer and was told to replace the battery, which I did, I now wonder if that was a related incident.
Had just made minor engine repairs - hoses - belt - thermostat - water pump - oil change - oil filter - air filter - less then one week - 30mp making left turn - gripping very hard on the wheel to finish the turn - no power steering - tested fan - fan ok - pulled steering pump off - what do I do now - buy pump - call dealer - wait to here from you.
For the second time in the life of this car (first in 2011), the steering pump stopped working while I was driving. The first time I was lucky and at low speed hit a concrete piling in a parking garage. The second time I was actually in traffic in an intersection. I was lucky not to hit the college students in the cross walk, again because I was not going very fast, but it's a huge safety issue. And had I not known what was going on due to the first time the steering pump blew out, I would not have known to break and re-start the car to resolve the issue. Honestly, the car cannot be steered when the pump stops functioning. And Mini has known for years that this is an issue. I had to wait 8 weeks for the fan to come in and they didn't want to do any work until they had both parts. The pumps need to be re-designed.
