3 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

Vehicle was in motion at 55-60 mph. Vehicle cut off and would not start or turnover. 15 minutes of rest and car was started and rpms were fluttering. Mini cooper of grand rapids stated the timing chain was "most likely" "out". They also stated no goodwill assistance could be provided while acknowledging the window, for a previous lawsuit involving thee 2009 Mini Cooper S, was closed and the defective tensioner and guide rails (to include engine design) were still in my Mini cooper. Car has started once since but will not stay running. Other cases of fuel pumps failing on said model were acknowledged but "no recalls have been issued" said Mini, thus not warranting any repair or concern for my failed Mini. Repair estimate was 3,985$. After mentioning the previous lawsuit during 2015, a 'random' discount was announced of 10-15% to bring said total to est. 2,900$. My 2009 Mini Cooper S has had idle and rpm issues/fluctuations for a couple months after previous owner had just replaced the timing chain assembly in January of 2019 with genuine Mini replacement parts (factory parts causing the same factory defect).

8 Power Train problem of the 2013 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

The 2013 Cooper S we started having issues about a year ago, where the car hesitated to accelerate, as it is usually described in the service history. What happens in real driving situations is that when you cruise at around 2,000 rpm and then decide to accelerate the car loses the power, completely! so basically, when you're on the freeway or on a two-way road and decide to overtake another vehicle, the Mini will not only not accelerate, but just completely lose power for a second or two. It is an obvious safety concern. At the beginning it wasn't too frequent, but recently it started doing it all the time, despite the fact that the Mini service replaced fuel injectors, performed some cleaning and also suggested to me to use a fuel additive with each fuel up. None of those things helped, the issues progressively started to get worse. It all started when the odometer was somewhere between 75 and 80 thousand miles. The vehicle is currently at around 97,000 miles therefore slowly reaching its warranty end (100,000 and/or 6 years). During my recent service appointment at Mini of reno I insisted on repairing the problem. I was told that at this stage Mini of reno, nor Mini USA know how to fix this problem and only thing they can try is attempt on cleaning the carbon build-up, which they quoted me $1386,86, making it clear at the same time, that this is just an attempt and they cannot guarantee that it will fix the problem. Contacting Mini USA yielded no results, they didn't offer to fix or replace the vehicle.

9 Power Train problem of the 2014 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

Drivetrain malfunction warning - appears and reduces speed at any time of driving - this could cause severe accidents due to loss of power/performance. This warning is engaged at anytime w/o warning. Software update for vehicle should be free of charge as this impacts loss of power. When taking it to auto mechanic, no codes are found and no engine light or fault code. Researching all f56 forum, seems like this has been common complaint. Even though the warning comes on and tells you to drive carefully (slow down). You are still in a high density traffic or freeway that does not allow you enough time to pull on the side. The software should be available to consumer as this impacts the speed of the current driving condition (which is not obvious to other drivers). If it was a flat tire, or smoke coming out of the hood. . This is visible. Mechanics cannot figure out the issue due to a "general / no details" to the specific issue. Therefore, the older software for this model and year should be considered a recall for hazardous driving. Furthermore, software updates should be notified to all consumers and detailing the items that the software will be changing. There is no communication or even on their website to show updates and needs for it. This is a problem if it has anything to do with engine and powertrain.

11 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/18/2017

Timing chain tensioner failed and stretched timing chain now the death rattle and BMW Mini cooper knows 2010 were affected there is lots of data online for 2010 Mini Cooper S timing chain and tensioner failing at 20k to 50k mile range. We have 42k miles and in range of class action that was filed. They won't fix issue and want 2500. I'm one of many with 2010 issues. They say it's upgraded but failed at 40k same as others. 2188517577 or vince. Pikula@state. Mn. Us.

12 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

I purchased a brand new Mini Cooper S in 2009 w/ standard 3 years of factory maintenance and I later added on an extended warranty a few years later. 2014 I entered into a 3 year lease on a BMW. Aside from maintenance, the Mini was mostly garaged except for maintenance until th after a month of driving it, I heard a ticking sound that made me think it needed oil added, despite having one about 2 months prior. I added the Mini synthetic oil to the car and the ticking sound stopped for a week or two. Then it started rattling and shaking severely when driving low speeds or at an idle. I checked the on board diagnostic systems, which is supposed to check oil levels and the general health of the car. No issues came up but I stopped driving it because I saw the oil light come on, and I know that couldn't be good, especially since oil was added between changes. I had the car towed to an independent Mini mechanic, they told me that the timing chain needed to be replaced, there were holes in the turbo line and some various oil leaks. Their estimate was roughly $2500 to make the car drivable again. Spoke to Mini corporate, urged me to take it to Mini dealer for diagnostics so corporate to see what help they'd offer me on these issues because they knew the timing chain belt was an issue and they knew the car burns through oil 50% faster than their electronic system and owners manual says. They were aware of this in 2008 and it affected several Mini coopers to the extent of blowing out their entire engine. A class action lawsuit was filed because Mini failed to issue a recall, warn buyers, or notify current ones. They extended the timing chain belt coverage to 7 years or 80k after the suit. My car has 73k but it's 7 years going on 8. The dealer confirmed diagnosis but Mini won't offer any help on the 3-4k repairs. If this happened 9 months ago, they would cover it.

13 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 04/24/2017

Car went into limp gear mode on freeway, high rpm at 40 mph. Vehicle shipped to Mini dealer 05/09/17 saying there was a transmission error code. Dealer said they tested vehicle and it wasn't the transmission it needed a water pump and cylinder need valve cover. 67,117 miles on odometer. Also front cv axle boot leaking. Had repairs done ($1692. 58) after discount. At time of pickup, dealer asked to keep the vehicle a few more days to double check the transmission. A few days later they say yes there is a transmission error with the car going at higher highway speeds and it will need a new transmission! cost ($9000) I did not have this done. The service advisor told me the vehicle was not safe to drive! this vehicle is driven by my 16 year old daughter to and from school!.

14 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

I am original owner. Transmission problems. Slipping and hard shifting. Automatic and manual. 70,000 miles. Happens intermittently when driving. BMW told me to sell it right away. $9,000 to repair. Should be recalled. Very unhappy. Please help.

15 Power Train problem of the 2014 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

Other Mini coppers from this year with different models have been recalled for an issue that allows the car to the exited when the car is not in park. My car can get shut down, this is purposefully stopped like at a parking space. While still in drive mode, I can exit the car, the car starts to roll away. This has happened to me numbers times. Having had to jump back in my car to stop it. Once on a hill and it almost caused a crash. Scary. Bought the car in 2015 spring and the started fall of 2016 and has continued to happen. Car boot to bonnet warranty was expired at the time this started. They were called the around first time this happened, I was unable to get my key out of the ignition while in park. Then I was able to get it out while in drive and now, I can often run my car without the key in the ignition. This is not a keyless start car. All incidents transpired on parking lots or parking spaces on a street.

16 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/28/2016

On 8-28-16 the timing chain failed on the engine of my 2009 Mini Cooper S, which lead to catastrophic engine failure, requiring the engine to be replaced. At the time of failure I was driving at full speed on the highway. There was sudden power loss and I had to avert traffic to safely pull over. During power loss there was lots of smoke pouring out of the car. Timing chain failures are a known issue with Mini, and the subject of a recent lawsuit against Mini. . Read more...

17 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/05/2016

My daughter was in traffic, driving the vehicle home from an oil change, when the timing change broke causing her to lose power. The loss of power created a dangerous and hazardous situation. Fortunately, she was able to get it off the main roads and we had it towed by aaa to the Mini dealership. Due to the fact that there has been a class action settlement with BMW Mini over the defective timing chains, the problem could have been avoided if there had been a recall effort by the manufacturer.

18 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Vehicle was in motion and my wife heard a noise- chose to ignore noise. After researching the problem I discovered the timing chain could catastrophically fail leaving my wife on mountain roads with no power and loss of power steering . Although BMW has been aware of this problem for years they have bob and weaved fixing only those they have been forced to, leaving others ,with the exact same problem the owners responsibility. . The dealer charged us $ 1300 to repair the vehicle. Our particular car supposedly was just outside the production run cutoff for free repair. This is a safety issue and all cars with this potential problem should be recalled. Additionally, customers should not have to play "what is the noise detective " in order to discover a life threatening defect. In addition to the recall BMW needs to immediately notify all effected owners with information on how to recognize the problem and what action to take.

19 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/25/2015

Timing chain mechanism failure at 70,000 miles. Known issue among at least 500,000 Mini cooper generation 2 models.

20 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/06/2015

Vehicle has had several issues. Latest is transmission which shifts erratically from 2nd gear to 3rd gear causing the vehicle's tachometer to race from 2,000 rpm to nearly 8,000 rpm within a second or two. The vehicle then accelerates/jerks forward erratically. The dealer says this is a transmission issue that would cost $10,500 to repair/replace. There are hundreds if not thousands of complaints about Mini Cooper S transmissions yet the dealer/manufacturer is unwilling to address the issue.

21 Power Train problem of the 2014 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/29/2015

Oil filter housing failed during commute and lost all oil. Needed to have the car towed for repair. Received the car back next day. Failed part is currently subject of recall, but my car did not fall into the scope of the recall so I never received a notice. Two days after repair for the oil filter housing, the vanos system failed. Entire vanos system needed to be replaced, took a total of 6 days for repair.

22 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/17/2014

My timing chain has now started to fail for the 4th time on this car. The timing chain tensioners fail and Mini does nothing to correct the issue past the warranty period.

23 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/06/2014

The vehicle would not shift into 2nd/3rd gear after a traffic stop. The gears would shift erratically resulting in loss of power and we almost had an accident. Check engine light is on and a message shows up "ep" which means transmission is on emergency.

24 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

Purchased a used 2009 Mini Cooper S hardtop with 27,000 miles on it and within 20 days the clutch was slipping upon light acceleration and caused very unsafe driving conditions. It was replaced by the carmax warranty given under the first 30 days , my vehicle now has 32,000 miles and is starting to feel similar to the previous symptoms.

25 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

I was driving my Mini cooper on I-95 when the I noticed a very strong burning smell and the clutch was giving me difficulty changing gears. As I was getting off I-95 the gears were not responding and the car began to slow down. I got off I-95 and just made it to a main blvd. When the clutch gave out and the car would not move. I could see the cars in the rear view mirror coming at full speed and honking at me to move out of the of the way. I called 911 and asked for a patrol to spot traffic and then tried to get out of the car to ask for help but almost got ran over by cars passing by. I thought I was going to get either hit or killed. Two man in a van stopped and pushed my car out of the way until the truck stopped. The police car never showed up. A west palm braman Mini Cooper Service man was driving by and told me the clutch was completely burnt out and to tow the car to his facility. I did and Mini cooper refused to fix it even though they are aware of the defect and the many complaints. They tried to tell me the clutch was worn out but the car only has 13,000 miles, they also tried to blame it on aggressive driving or that I did not know how to drive a standard transmission. I told them I drive very slow and have been driving standard transmission my entire life. They just refuse to acknowledge the manufacturing defect. Please make sure that someone looks into this so that no one has to face the same danger I did or even worse, be killed.

26 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 04/22/2014

My car started to act funny. Almost sounding like it was suffocating. It would die about ten to fifteen times every morning before I would finally get the car started. It would shut off when I stopped at intersections. The only time it ran decent was when I was driving highways speeds for 20 minutes or more. I changed out filters, spark plugs, and fluids but none of it changed the way it was running. Come to find out it that the chain and chain tensioner had broken. This damage caused roughly $1000 to fix. Luckily I caught it in time before it did additional damages to the crank shaft. With low miles the mechanic even told me its a fault part and brakes easily. He has had to replace numerous american model Minis in italy. My country code is 39 if you call.

27 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

During light acceleration at interstate speeds, the engine lost some power and the service engine light came on. The dealer first replace the vacuum hoses. It happened again, the dealer replaced the vacuum pump. It happened again immediately, the dealer replaced the turbocharger unit because the wastegate won't close completely. The turbocharger and wastegate should last much longer than 5 years (the car was delivered in April 2009) or 70,000 miles.

28 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

I am current owner of a 2006 Mini Cooper S. I purchased the car new around April 2006. Over last 2 months, I have started to see a problem with power train. The car jerks horribly while trying to accelerate when it tries to change to higher gears. This happens either in the "drive" mode where the car automatically changes the gears or while driving in "m/s" mode where the driver gets the option to change the gear. Over last 1-2 weeks, the vehicle jerks when I switch from park to reverse. I took the car to Mini cooper dealership and their diagnosis was to replace the transmission at a cost of $8500. My car has around 96,500 miles and has been maintained well. When I talked to the dealership, they indicated that they have seen about 2 to 3 cars having problem (just within that dealership) in recent times (the person I talked to was relatively new). It is unreasonable for transmission to require a replacement at such low mileage. In addition, it looks like this seems like a systemic issue given just one dealer has seen a few of these and a quick search indicates a number of other owners of Mini Cooper S encountering this issue over last 12 to 18 months (translates to transmission systematically breaking after about 7 to 8 years of operation). The problem has the potential to result in collisions since the car will not accelerate as expected.

29 Power Train problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

Since I get my until now I repair two times . The first time I was change the part of the top of the motor I don't remember the name. But this one that is the most strage I was driving and in the middle of the road the motor stop intanly. The most strange is 10 minutes after drive the car all this happen so that mean is no safe. And now what I have to do. . . .

30 Power Train problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/24/2013

Driving my 2008 Mini Cooper S at 70mph on the highway, the vehicle lost power and died. The timing chain tensioner failed causing the motor to blow up and the timing chain popping through the valve cover, the timing chain tensioner is under a factory inspection notice, I never received a notice to inform me of the part failure. Now the engine needs replaced.

31 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

Transmission starting bucking and causing uncontrolled acceleration the only "fix" is to replace the transmission at a $9,000 cost.

32 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

Ran a diagnostic test and these warnings came up - 2d52 super knocking 2dcd fuel shut off due to super knocking cylinder 3 2968 inlet camshaft sensor 2b64 intake manifold, unmetered air based on all of these sound like my Mini cooper has bad fuel and/or serious carbon build, I've just purchased this car from a dealership and I am experiencing delays in acceleration, loss of forward propulsion.

33 Power Train problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

The automatic cvt transmission just down shifted and now won't go into high gear. This will happen on the freeway and will shift and clunk into gear. BMW is aware of the problem with this transmission but won't stand behind their product. It is very dangerous to drive.

34 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

I took my car into my local shop and had oil change, new battery, tires rotated and alignment . They could a noise from the engine and they checked it out. Call me to inform me that I had to take to the mimi cooper dealership because the timing chain needed to be replace. I called Mini cooper and spoke to amanda at the houston dealership momentum Mini. She informed me that the cost would be anywhere from 4000 to 10,000 dollars. I explained to her I had the car for 1 year and have any driven 6000 miles in a year. After doing research I noticed that other people where having the same issues with there Mini. I purchased this car with 39,126 miles on it and my daily drive to work is a quarter mile if that.
