Mitsubishi Diamante owners have reported 7 problems related to automatic transmission control module (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mitsubishi Diamante based on all problems reported for the Diamante.
Heater core defective and leaked coolant underdash on to transmission ecm and neutral safety switch. Because of this very common manufacture defect I had to have my heater core, transmission ecm, neutral safety switch replace. And my transmission rebuild, none of which were warranted by the manufacture and were not cheap.

Vehicle check engine light came on and locked into third gear. Noticed smell of coolant inside drivers compartment and hazing of the windshield. Brought vehicle to dealer to have problem improperly diagnosed and had to have it re-tested two weeks later. Heater core leakage has caused damage to the ecu and now both have to be replaced. Total cost of repair for both was $3,357. 62. Coolant fumes are very toxic and cause a significant health risk and ecu failure could easily result in a very serious accident on the highway or elsewhere. The "fogging" of the windshield is a visibility hazard as well caused by the hot coolant in the defrost vents.

We have a five-year-old Mitsubishi Diamante. For the last week, my husband, scott has smelled a sweet smell in his car and had a problem with the windows fogging. Tuesday morning he started losing forward power when driving to work on i480. He noticed that his dashboard transmission lights were acting funny so he called our Mitsubishi dealer. The service people asked if he had noticed that the windows were fogging or if he smelled any anti-freeze coming from the heater. Scott was astonished that the sweet smell was antifreeze. The service advisor said that most likely it's because that Diamante has experienced heater cores leaking into the passenger compartment and dripping onto the transmission computer. This is why he was losing power while driving on i480. One of my concerns is what health problems can come from driving in an enclosed environment while the heating system is mixing antifreeze fluid in the air that my husband is breathing while commuting to work. Later on that same Tuesday, the service advisor called him and said that their service manager spoke directly with the regional Mitsubishi service representative and he said that the heater core was too far out of warranty to be covered based on 36,000 mile warranty. The transmission computer, while covered up to 84,000 miles, would also not be covered because the failure was due to antifreeze dripping on the computer causing it to fail.
January 12, 2005 one cold morning I noticed that the reverse gear did not go in as fast as it should it took like 1 minute to go into gear, when cold it would jolt before advancing in drive. Took it to the dealer, they did not find anything, so I picked up that same afternoon, next morning same problem. I took the car back on Jan 19, left it over night and they found it took a couple of minutes to go into gear, therefore, they decided to look at the transmission, the car has been at the dealer since 1/20 thru 2/7, after several discussions they have told me it is the heating core dripping on top of the computer damaging the sensors, today 2/8 the car would not go into gear at all. I have had grease with the seat belts, they had to be changed at 3600 miles, the tires (eagle) had to be replaced at 18,000mies, the brakes starting acting up at 6000 miles, the steering started vibrating at 12,000 miles. Bottom line this car is a mess, sucks and Mitsubishi does not want to be responsible for any of those problems, this is a big lemon!.
1) smelled antifreeze but could not find a source. 2) heater coil was leaking. 3) leaked on a computer that controlled my transmission. Why would anyone place an electrical part under a unit that hold a liquid? why would the electrical part not encased in a protective wrap if it had to be placed next to a pressurized liquid carring coil?
4) I was charged $1,125. 00 to fix a problem caused by sorry engineering. I learned that misubishi knew of the problem and never notified their customers. There should be a recall and Mitsubishi should have to pay for the repairs. All parts, heater coil, transmission regulating computer were replaced.
