Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported 6 problems related to carrier/rack (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mitsubishi Eclipse based on all problems reported for the Eclipse.
1) a common issue according to the forums and facebook groups, the strut towers rust through which presents a safety issue when considering that the suspension is connected to the steering which could put an individual or others on the road at risk 2) yet another common issue, the dash and associated bezels crack over time. There has been no solution or alternative to complete replacement from anyone, including (I'm sure) Mitsubishi.

The dashboard facia is pulling away from the dashboard. I have recently reported this under tracking number 10956954. It has gotten worse, and I am concerned that the passenger side airbag could be hindered in event of air bag deployment. I am attaching photos.

The car makes a sound in the rear when I make a turn. The turning radius is very bad. I wouldn't do a u turn with it. The other issue is that the a/c stopped working on a very hot day. When I turned on the a/c the car turned off this almost caused a accident due to the sudden stop. The dashboard is all cracked. Other than that the car seems good. Everything else about the car I do like. The paint is peeling off and there seems to be some rust.
I bought an used 2003 Eclipse and at the time I didn't realize how badly cracked the dashboard was. To my surprise, I have not been able to find an used dashboard in good condition. . . Every single 2003 Eclipse I've found and seen has the same issue and after doing some research, there has not been a recall for this obvious manufacturing defect. The only solution Mitsubishi offers is to replace it with a brand new (yet same poor quality) part. How can we (eclipse owners) get a full or partial credit from Mitsubishi, even if the temporary solution is to install a similar part?.

Today, April 21, 2011, I put my key in the ignition switch and my key broke. The metal part of the key had broken out of the plastic end. I was able to get the key out of the ignition. Upon inspecting both sets of keys, I noticed that both keys have a crack in the plastic starting from the posterior left corner base of the metal end extending mid way into the posterior plastic part. Both keys have the exact type of crack located in the same area consisting of the same width and pattern. Naturally, the crack in the broken key is alittle longer then the other key. This is obviously a design flaw considering that both keys consist of the same type of cracks. I have pictures of the keys and I also still have the defective key parts in my possession. I went to a Mitsubishi dealership in shreveport, louisiana later this evening to repair one of the keys.

Dashboard cracks in multiples of area's, which does effect the position of the airbag. The plastic is very brittle to the point when it cracks it's as sharp as a razor. I reviewed several web site and noted this is a common problem with several type of Mitsubishi's. I have a 2003 Eclipse that has a cracked dashboard so bad the passenger side of the dash board is sloping downward, the cracking started 8 years ago and continues to crack more and more everyday, causing structure support issues and razor sharp edges. I have cut myself several times on the sharp edges. There is obviously a issue with the type of plastic that was used to constructed these dashboards . . . I would rate this as a need to review ASAP issue. . . If my air bag ever went off, sharp pieces of plastic would probably be flying everywhere like a knife. . .
