1 Clutch problem of the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/07/2008

2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse spun 3 main bearings, has a worn clutch at 28,000 miles. I have never replaced the clutch in my '88 Mazda, which currently has 190,000 miles on it or any of the previous manual transmission vehicles I have owned. Mitsubishi reps denied the warranty due to aftermarket part (cold air intake) the clutch being worn and from what they claim as "spirited driving. " I did not pay $30,000 for a car to take out and drive it like a maniac. This is a car that I take very good care of and change oil every 3,000 miles religiously, and have it serviced regularly. I had a dispute hearing on this matter and that was a joke, you better have someone to go with you that has in-depth knowledge of engines and cold air intakes. I know that the cold air intake does not change the parameters of the engine set by the manufacturer, since I had contacted the company that developed the intake. I will never buy another Mitsubishi in my life. They do not stand behind their warranties or their products. I will never recommend a Mitsubishi vehicle to anybody. I will also not recommend the dealership to anyone either. They was of no help to me what so ever.

2 Clutch problem of the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/22/2006

Re Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2006, 8,000+ miles. With no prior signs or odors, rpms fluctuated in 5th gear at 65 mph reduced to 30 mph. Vehicle was pulled over and then would not proceed in gear. Taken to dealership and told clutch was worn; parts were replaced. Failure was blamed on driver, but there is reason to believe the clutch was faulty from start.

3 Clutch problem of the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 07/15/2006

I have a 2006 Eclipse gt, its only 7 months old and has less than 10,000 miles on it. Im driving along and I shift gears and I heard it rev up before it caught and started to accelerate. None the less, I find out its the clutch going out already. And the dealership wont replace it because its a wear item. . . But what clutch goes out in less than 10,000 miles when the car isn't driven like a race car, but normal.

4 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 04/22/2006

At approximately 36,500 miles or so noticed the car not wanting to "grip" on take off. Seemed to want to rev higher randomly. . Over a period of 2 days went from no big deal to not being able to drive. I have had previous experience with manual transmissions (2 other personal vehicles ). I contacted dealership and warranty provider to find out this is normal and considered wear and tear. Have been priced upwards of 1000 usd if not more to replace this clutch. And I just got this car.

6 Clutch problem of the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/15/2006

Clutch wore off at 33000 miles and not even one year. I've been driving manual for ten years and never had to replace clutch on my 97 Nissan truck. I still have the old car without ever having to replace the clutch and now a new 2006 Eclipse burn out after less than a year. Dealer said that it isn't covered by warranty because its wearable but I think it should be part of the powertrain warranty for 100000 or ten years.

7 Clutch problem of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder catastrophic failure of clutch. The line that runs from the slave cylinder to the master cylinder has what appears to be a cut in the line 1mm from the connection to the master cylinder. I have now replaced this line six (6) times in two years. Failure usually occurs after driving the car at highway speeds for 2 or more hours. Clutch goes to the floor due to loss of fluid. I have also replaced the master cylinder twice & the slave cylinder three times, the last time was 2 weeks ago.

11 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 06/12/2004

I have only had the car for a little over a year. I have absolutely loved the car besides having to take it in within like 3 months to replace a deffective transmission. I have am a person that have been in many close accident calls throughout my life so I am not a person who takes the car to the limit whatsoever. I have had defective cars all my life. My first car I was in a near death call in my first accident when a man in a rush decided to try to pass me while I was doing a u-turn. My second I bought for $4000 and put over 2k in it trying to get it fixed and running. My third car I bought was a Toyota camry. It was a great car but also had to put $1,500 into a car I bought for only lik 5k, when the manufacturer told me that they couldnt fix the problem and I had wasted every dime I had on this car. My last and present car is my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse gt. My mother didn't like all the problems I was having with all of my previous cars, so when I received an academic scholarship to any school in florida she went out and bought me the Eclipse. To get back to the problem at hand, at 10,000 miles I started having problems with my clutch. The car will severely jerk when switching gears every time I start the car. I took the car into my local Mitsubishi dealer and they told me it was not under warranty which didn't make sense. The car was under 12k miles and I thought there was a warranty up till then. Anyways, I am not the person to argue so I said "ok" and went on my way. Well, it has gotten worse and I believe could have played a large part in my only other accident. But the bad thing is that now I am at 14, 438 miles, which either way is over the 12k mile warranty if there was one. I have all original receipts to prove that I started having clutch problems before I hit 12k miles and I am not sure if I can do anything. I got a quote of over $1,000 to buy the clutch and install it. What can I do?.

12 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 05/24/2004

I bought my car in October of 2003 and immediately I noticed a grinding coming from the transmission. I took it into lancaster Mitsubishi in pennsylvania and they told me it was a common trans noise. A couple of weeks passed by and the noise kept getting louder and now my clutch is slipping. I have never beat or raced my car. It is one of the best cars I have ever owned and the one of the most reliable. I don't have much choice to keep driving it the way it is and it is getting worse. Pretty soon I will be out of a car.

13 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 05/20/2004

The clutch failed after only 12,000 miles. The dealer said that the vehicle was hot rodded but the driver stated that she was an experienced manual transmission driver. They also said that the clutch was slipping. Provide further details.

14 Clutch problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/25/2004

The design of the manual transmission, the transmission synchros and the clutch mechanism has been faulty which causes the following parts to fail a lot earlier than any normal vehicle. - the clutch plate gets worn before time - the throw out bearing (tob) has a rattle - the clutch has a rattle - there is very hard gear shift into the 1st and 2nd gear. The 2nd gear is very hard, especially when its cold start. (that is not particularly cold at the end of the month of March in houston, texas) - it is also due to the "poor" synchronizers in the transmission box - this has been reported by a lot of Mitsubishi Eclipse gt v6 users for the 3rd generation I. E. 2000+ Mitsubishi Eclipse cars with a manual shift - this is due to substandard transmission and clutch quality from Mitsubishi.

15 Clutch problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 02/24/2004

I drive an 02 Mitsubishi Eclipse-spyder gt. Here is my complaint: clutch is gone and the car is not even 2. 5 years old. I've driven a manual for over 10 years. Drove a vw, Honda, mb, etc. Never had a problem. I don't race and don't burn the clutch. At about 25k my clutch started to go out. Now the car won't move at all. I know a lot of owners, especially with the v6 have the same problem. And spending $1500 on a clutch that will wear out in two years is not an option. My hope is that Mitsubishi would recall this defective clutch and reimburse those who had to pay out of their own pocket for a defective product that should never exist on a brand new car. Please stop this problem as I know only more people would have to pay a lot of money on a still defective clutch. Make them stop please!.

16 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 02/02/2004

While shifting into reverse the clutch failed. This caused the vehicle to stall. Consumer restarted the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that clutch needed to be replaced and replaced it. However, the problem recurred after having three clutches replaced.

18 Clutch problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

Clutch feels sluggish in 2nd- 5th gear, like almost a slip. Only have 27k miles on it and I don't abuse my car in anyway. A few other of my friends experience the same problems with their Mitsubishi Eclipses.

19 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 11/23/2003

My clutch on my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder started to show signs of slipping at around 11,000 miles. I thought it was covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty and did not get it fixed right away as my dealership is about an hour away. It finally became so bad that it was unsafe to drive at 19500 miles. The dealership had to replace the clutch and would not cover it under warranty. I have driven stick shifts all my life and never had one fail, even after 85,000 miles. The car was never raced or driven abusively. Now, the second clutch is at 11,000 miles and the problem is beginning again. I have read on an internet forum for Eclipse owners, reports of many others having problems with the clutches on the 2003 Eclipse gts models. This appears to be a factory defect and should be rectified. I cannot spend $1000 every 6 - 12 months to keep replacing clutches in this car.

20 Clutch problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 07/14/2003

My clutch had to be replaced at only 14,500 miles. Problems were evident at around 10,000 miles and became considerably worse in time. I have driven a manual transmission for 15 years and have never raced and did not ride the clutch. My last car's clutch lasted in excess of 100,000 miles without fault. The service manager at my dealership told me that it appears to be a factory defect. However, since the warranty on the clutch expires at 12,000 miles, I have to pay for the part. The problem became obvious when my transmission spun as I tried to go from a stop up a hill. My car basically became stuck in traffic on a dangerous section of roadway and it was luck that I was not involved in a side-impact collision. If this had happened on a railroad track or a drawbridge, I see this problem as potentially life-threatening. It is my understanding that many people have reported this problem to Mitsubishi motors and that they are working on a possible replacement clutch. Their efforts are too late for me. I urge the NHTSA to require that Mitsubishi motors replace defective clutches free of charge or reimburse those (such as myself) who had to pay out of pocket to repair what is obviously a factory defect.

21 Clutch problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 07/06/2003

Since I purchased my car back in November of 2001, a 2001 Mitsubishi spyder gt, I have had problems with my clutch slipping when starting in 1st gear, with extreme stuttering and shuttering of my vehicle and have informed my dealerships (woburn Mitsubishi woburn, MA and peter fuller-watertown MA) of the problems in writing. They all blow me off telling me that nothing could be wrong this early on, with so few miles on the car. Well the car is still stuttering, even has stalled out, even when giving plenty of gas. If this were to happen over train tracks, in the middle of an intersection, etc. I would be involved in a major accident threatening myself and my passenger(s). Because I have brought this up to the attention of my dealer before I even hit 10k, and have brought this up at each subsequent major vehicle service time, and I now have 38k on my warranty has expired with no help. Its like the dealerships haven't even called the technical support hotline to verify that this is a known problem. This is neglect on the part of the dealerships and on the part of Mitsubishi trained professionals, and if no warning has been put out then it is also Mitsubishi motors itself that should be held responsible for any related injuries. The stuttering of the car happens to this day, cold warm, it doesn't matter. I've been driving a stick since I was 16, and I've never seen this occur on any other vehicles.

23 Clutch problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 04/28/2003

The rims on my 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse have become dented under what would be considered less than normal wear and tear. I have taken exceptional care to protect this car from damage. As an example, after three years of ownership, there is still not a single door dent or chip, due to the fact that I exercise the extra effort to park far away from other vehicles and walk the extra distance to my destination. Therefore it's reasonable to assume that I would also steer clear of potholes, etc. , and I have the paper work to prove that I have maintained my car according to standards set by Mitsubishi. Yet despite this level of care, the rims have become damaged. Ironically, as this is my first new car, I take better care of it than any car I have ever owned, and yet it is the first car I have had this issue with. When I brought it to the dealership, the factory rep said it was because the air pressure must have been low and I hit a pothole. But yet he won't tell me how he came to that determination. At the same time I brought the car I for the rims, I had brought the car in for the clutch noise issue, and nowhere on the repair order is it mentioned that I requested to have the rims replaced and that my request was denied. Nor can I get it from Mitsubishi in writing. Also, it is my understanding from the dealership that the tires were never removed from my car during the "inspection", so I question its sincerity. I have left two messages with the factory rep to explain to me how he arrived at his determination, and he has still not returned my call. I don't understand why Mitsubishi has spent the time and money making a one-piece rim to replace the two-piece rim if they don't recognize that the rims aren't an issue, and why they are replacing some people's rims and not others. Hopefully the class action lawsuit currently underway will help me out, because Mitsubishi is not being very responsive.

Failure Date: 10/25/2002

The car just stopped moving in the middle of a highway and their was no wierd sounds to forwarn me of anything! this happened in January 2001 and the dealer said it was the clutch. The dealer was rude/mean, but then I called Mitsubishi motors and they told the dealer to change the clutch. Here it is 22 months later, 10/2002, and the clutch is going out again the dealer is telling me. The dealers service women told me I must be a bad driver, and I told her I've drove sticks for 23 years and never had to replace a clutch before, let alone 2 clutches! something is wrong with this car! 2nd problem they said and my title shows the car to be a 1998, yet the original sticker on the body around the door says manufactured in the USA in 1997. 27 Clutch problem of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse

29 Clutch problem of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

In June of 1998 I began experiencing the clutch intermittently sticking (sometimes to the ground and I would have to manually pull the clutch up while driving) at speeds of anywhere from 5 to 65 miles an hour. After numerous attempts to fix my car in a period of four months the dealer I have been having my car serviced at (todey mitsubihi in ventura, CA) has finally diagnosed the problem as a faulty engine, apparently the engine is actually shifting and this was causing my clutch problems. I am aware that todey Mitsubishi has seen at least one other vehicle with this same engine flaw (shifting) manifesting itself in a fluid leak.

30 Clutch problem of the 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 05/21/1999

42 days after the purchase of my vehicle(used), I stopped at a stop sign and could not go into 1st gear to pull forward. The car wouldn't go into any gear while the car was running. After having it towed back to the dealership, they told me the clutch "exploded. " I was treated very poorly at the dealership, they accused me of doing the damage and charged me for the repairs. Exactly one year later the throw out bearing went out on the year old clutch. I went to another repairman after the dealership would not honor the warranty.
