1 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/10/2020

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse rs 2. 4 engine I bought it off my husband's uncle four months ago and ever since I got the car I noticed the light adjusters don't work at all and at night the headlights are so dim that sometimes I can't even see the road at all this is a safety concern that needs to be taken care of.

2 Headlights problem of the 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

Experiencing a problem with an electronic control units related to headlight outage, causing failure of both front headlights, daytime running lights and hi-beam lights. Began with spontaneous yet infrequent hesistation-blinking on/off of driver-side headlamp when nighttime lights first used in the evening, especially while vehicle was in motion. This eventually lead increased to total outage of front headlights, running lights and hi-beams which led to unsafe nighttime driving. Car was taken to local Mitsubishi dealership for repair, where technician informed me that this same issue is a known recall on other Mitsubishi models, but not on the Eclipse. That said, my 2012 model is the final model year for this vehicle to be offered from Mitsubishi. The car has less than 90k miles, and yet this electrical failure issue is not covered under their 100k warranty. --- I now have to pay nearly $1300 to replace both main headlight lamps and both electrical control units, along with wiring between. ----- the verbiage from the recall of the other Mitsubishi models: ""the affected vehicles have an electronic control unit that controls the headlights, taillights and windshield wipers," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "due to a manufacturing error, the voltage inside this ecu may be unstable. Unstable voltage could result in intermittent failure of the vehicle's headlights, taillights and wipers. If the headlights and/or windshield wipers fail, the driver could have reduced visibility. If the taillights fail, the vehicle could be less visible. Either condition increases the risk of a crash. . 4 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

The headlight plug burned the connection. This resulted in a substantial loss of light output/ no headlights. The plastic plug is also melted, causing a concern for fire and appearing that a small fire may have happened.

5 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

Wiring harness female socket for the headlamps over heated and melted. The passenger side female socket melted about one year ago to a point where it would not provide headlight illumination. Before the complete failure, the headlight would either be fully bright, or very dim. The mileage on the vehicle at that time was around 60k. I also noticed that the driver side female socket also had melted some during this time. In Jan. Of this year, with approx. 70k miles on the vehicle, the driver's side headlight failed completely with the full melting of the female socket. A few days prior to complete failure, a burning odor is noticed in the passenger compartment. I have both pieces avail to send if need be. This is a serious issue because a complete failure of both female sockets at the same time is possible. This could cause someone driving to go from having two headlamps to none within seconds. If that occurred at night, it might cause a serious accident.

6 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

On my 2001 Eclipse spyder, headlights began to go out, but moving wire connection on back of headlamps would correct the problem momentarily. The problem occurred more and more frequently, and one headlamp stopped functioning altogether, and now both went out on me while driving almost getting into a accident. When I checked the problem the headlight boxes that connect to the wires were melted and eventually burned off and broke.

7 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/28/2007

I have a 2001 Eclipse gt, and I have been having problems with the headlights going on and off until one day they just stopped working. It kept smelling like something was burning and it had been the headlight harnesses. The dealership I purchased the vehicle from closed down so I brought it to key Mitsubishi of milford and they said that the headlight harnesses melted. They in turn told me that it would cost close to $300. 00 to fix. I didn't do anything to make the wires melt and it should be Mitsubishi's responsibility to fix the problem. They said that I should take it to crabtree in milford and see if they would do it. They did not want to cover the defect either. I have no headlights on the car and this causes a huge safety risk. I need to know what I have to do in order to get the manufacturer to fix this defect. This is Mitsubishi's fault and mistake. Many other people have had the same problem and it is not something cheap to fix. I am currently using a relatives loner car to get around because I have no way to pay for this. Please advise on what to do. Thanks.

8 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

One afternoon I got into my car and started it up, when suddenly I saw smoke arise from the front of my engine and smelled a sweet smell, but the smoke and smell soon dissipated, however I then noticed that my driver's side headlight was going dim and shortly thereafter I had no headlights! I am currently without headlights making it difficult to go to and from work. We have not tried to repair this ourselves because we did not know what the problem was. We checked the fuses and the bulbs which all seem to be normal. All the old parts are still on the car, however, the connector to the driver's side headlight had partially melted.

Both the right and left headlamp on my wife's 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse stopped working (both high and low beams) at the exact same time. Upon investigating, we found that all fuses were ok, but the headlamp wiring harnesses had melted. This is the same problem that has been reported in case numbers 10145878, 10111932, and 10100237. If this problem occured in the middle of a night-time drive, it could create a very dangerous situation.

17 Headlights problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/21/2005

I purchased a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse gt in 2001 and recently the left head lamp dimmed and I thought the head lamp needed to be replaced. I purchased a new bulb only to discover the head lamp harness had been melted. Shortly there after I driving home after sunset and both head lamps went out. All I could do was turn on my fog lamps to get light to see where I was going. I live in rural area and without any street lamps I could not even see the road. Once I arrived home I had my husband check the head lamp and the right head lamp harness is now melted as well. Mitsubishi should be held accountable for defective parts and design. I am very thankful that both my children had not been in the car with me when the head lamps decided to go. Additionally, my husband did verify that the fuses were not blown. I have read of others with the same year and model Eclipse with the same problem.

The cost was going to be more than the extended warranty. T $200 deductible the contact will have to pay out of her pocket.

19 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 02/05/2005

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. About 6 months ago I had the passenger side headlight go out. The fault was a melted connector attached to the lamp. I fixed it by soldering a wire in its place. 4 months months later the other headlight had the same problem. I'm writing this because I saw a complaint for the same issue and figured I'd give my two cents as well. I am actually looking for brake problems because the brakes on the car have been replaced twice and they still don't work very well.

I have owned my care for 3 years. In that time I have had a leaking sunroof, broken passenger rear view mirror, broken passenger window "wont roll up", numerous tire changes, bad vibration, horrible noises when turning wheel, have replaced 2 transmissions, both tie rod ends, 1 lower ball joint and control arm suspension bar"more info on this below", alternator, both headlights, 4 differant seats of breaks, 2 seats constintly running low on oil, replaced the fuel filter, seat belts don't stop, battery cables keep caroding, replace spark plugs atleast 3 to 4 times a year, vibrates when going down road. Those are just the things off the top of my head that I have done to this car. Now to the accident. After I got off work I was on my way home when I decided to go to my friends so while driving to her house I hear a loud pop and the next thing I know my car is controling itself and I can't steer it. This was all do to my lower ball joint shattering and my wheel almost completly detaching from my car. Now the other side is starting to make that horrible noise. The control arm swung on the bottum of my car after it broke during this and tore out my oil filter, oil pan, and oxygen senseor. Have yet to recieve any information from Mitsubishi.

32 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/01/2001

Not only do I have the aggrevation of bent rims and flat tires, and financial hardship on this, my left side of the car doesn't align to the right. Water leeks in on the left side. Sometimes the heater blows out cool air. The sunroof shakes when opening. I already had a manufacuters defect in my strut on the left side. I have sctraches on the left side fom the car scrapping the ground when I make a right hand turn. I had to have the cooling system replaced the first week I financed it. My hood won't open and my headlights fail causing me to dirve only with the fog lights. All these issues are the same and constant since I purchased this lemon.

33 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/01/2001

Since I bought the car in 9/01 I have had over 20 flat tires, causing me to miss work getting stuck over the bridge. I have had to pay for 4 new rims and several tires because the rims seperate from the tire. I have had scratches appear around the drivers left side of the car which now move all the way to the license plate I was putting on the donut in 2002 and saw my strut was blown after several attempts with the dealership as to why my car shakes after hitting a bump they kept telling me I was hitting curbs when I said to them my strut is blown they tried blaming me and after several attempts they investigated and realized I had a manufactuers defect in my left drivers front tire. I said they should replace the front side of my bumper bacause of the scratches they refused. My drivers side door, hood and rear doesn't align with the right side of my car and water seeps in when in rains. My hood doesn't open and my headlights keep failing where I only can drive with the fog lights. I have over 50 receipts of the same problem and the attorney general in 2003 said I filed for the lemon law too late. I really need help. The car was never in an accident since I purchased it and the dealership I went to is now closed down.

34 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

35 Headlights problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

Clear headlight covers are slowly becoming covered with residue to the point that it is noticeable when lights are shining on something white (garage door, rear of semi truck, new concrete, etc). Mitsubishi refuses to admit that the covers are not properly sealed. Since they are never open at night, they never test drive the vehicle at night. Service manager admits that the covers are building up a residue, but says it does not impair visibility. 1. It is very distracting and 2. It looks terrible! I've noticed that I am not the only one with the problem. Several more used Eclipses on their used lot had the same probolem the last time I was there.
