Takata recall. I first occurred a problem with the z on my wedding day. My clutch dropped to the floor and we couldn't get the car in gear. We were put in the middle of the mountains with no way to call a tow truck so we did our best to make it to the closest Nissan dealer. On the way we came to a four way red light and couldn't shift to a low enough gear to get to car to slow down, a semi was traveling about 60 mph right at us, we swerved into the emergency on and the truck to barely missed us. After that my husband found out from a mechanic that he should bleed the clutch so he did and the clutch was normal again. Besides that the car has had only one other occurrence with the clutch. I am petrified to drive my car after that situation but I have no choice considering I spend most of my paycheck just to pay for the one thing that will probably send me to my grave. This is a very serious problem and should be fixed! now to mention this morning. . . I woke up to go to work and went to start my car when my car wouldn't start due to a steering lock malfunction and will probably end up having to take it to a dealership if my research doesn't work out as planned. The brake light comes on when I push the clutch. . . The traction control light comes on and stays on for long periods. This car is going to hurt someone bad! worried about the people drinking and driving? you should be worried about the people driving a Nissan 370z !!!! so frustrated!.

The steering wheel lock has issues on the z's. Many other individuals have had the same problem occur to them when a key fob light comes on the dashboard to the left of the gas tank meter. Then the car won't start on anymore and has to be towed to the dealership. The dealer charges $600-$1200 for a replacement steering wheel lock ( which can potentially break again) for something that isn't our fault!!! the car has 34,xxx miles on it and shouldn't have any problems like this. There has to be a recall about this because it's a faulty unit from their manufacture and many of the z owners are starting to get this problem. Thank you, a fellow 370z owner.

First incident happened at around 37,000 miles, the car would not start and the push button lights up the lock light but seconds later started working. On June 3rd 2015, after driving to my job to pick up tools to head to the airport I park the car, came back to a car that would not start, the car recognizes the key but locks me out from starting the car. The car had random won't start, I brought this up to the Nissan dealers about ongoing issues with other owners of the same car. Now my car does not start and I am hearing that this is a going issue with the steering wheel lock/intelligent key. I am unable to move the car and will have to tow it to the dealer that denied issues with the inelligent key system locking owners from starting their cars. I want to bring this up so that way we speak out since there are so many people having issues but not enough post it so that a recall can be made for Nissan to fix this for owners affected.
Yesterday afternoon, after leaving work to my car within the parking lot, my vehicle did not start. I assumed it was due to a low battery within the intelligent key for the push to start ignition, so I replaced the battery at a local wal-mart. Upon returning to the car, I had the same problem. The key was able to lock and unlock the doors to the car, however when I pushed in the clutch and brake per usual followed by the start button, nothing took place. The indicator remained on the 'lock' position and failed to move over to the 'on' position to start the car. No sounds took place at all as if it was even trying to start. As a result, I left the car overnight and had it towed to the local dealership. They informed me a few hours later that my steering lock unit had 'failed'. I mentioned that I had seen this problem reported on numerous car blogs (NHTSA #10051829), however they mentioned since I was beyond my extended warranty, that I would have to pay roughly $1,250. 00 for the part and labor. It is currently being serviced, however I wanted this incident logged as I have seen a number of 370z owners recommend this route. Extremely disappointed with Nissan's coverage and handling of this situation.
Intelligent key system warning light had been flashing on and off. Took it immediately to apple Nissan in york per the owners manual and was told nothing was wrong with the vehicle. About 2 weeks later, warning light came on again and vehicle will not start. Push start is indicating lock only. Seems to be a common problem that warrants either a recall or an extended warranty on the electronic steering lock mechanism. Will not ever purchase another Nissan.
The Nissan steering lock unit (slu) failed. Once the unit fails, it will not recognize the key and the car cannot be started. This unit (48700jfood) was a solution to the problems of failure in the 2009 and 2010 370z which had their warranty extended (part number 48700jfooa; 48700jfoob; 48700jfooc). Nissan would not warranty this unit for me.
I have a 2010 Nissan 370z with power steering wheel lock issue which is the most common problem on 09-10 370z and Nissan won't cover it under recall. The fix is for $1500. Nissan was my favorite make and now it surely lost my buissnes a and left strangled. I have financial issues and now I can't afford to fix it and my car has been sitting for 3 days. Thanks Nissan with a great customer service, leaving your customer strangled. Even Nissan USA couldn't help resolve my problem and I am beyond frustrated. Please do yourself a favor and never buy a Nissan!.
My car wouldn't start. There is a solid light with key on dashboard would remain lit. I tried all methods to power on the car, but failed. Had to get the car towed to the Nissan dealership where I was told that the car requires a "steering lock actuator" replacement and cost runs to approximately $1150. My car is outside of the 3 year warranty period and hence it cannot be covered under warranty. It seems to be a known issue upon looking up on the internet. There should be a recall on this vehicle for this part as it is malfunctioning more than usual.
Car ignition is stuck in lock after being parked to go into the mall. Known issue that Nissan issued recall for gtr which is a more expensive car but not for the z a less expensive car. Car will not start or power into acc mode so the windows are also stuck down and have no way of going up. Issue has been reported many times butthe lower end cars do not get a fixc for this and will leave the owners stranded.
I had gone to the gym and as I was leaving the gym my car wouldn't start. I tried everything I could think of but nothing helped, I finally took it to the Nissan dealer and they said the steering lock assembly had falling apart. The dealer I took my car to is town north Nissan is austin, TX.
Key indicator light came on about a week prior to the incident. Made 2 phone calls to local Nissan dealerships (one in portland or and one in vancouver, wa) both dealerships claimed they had no idea what was going on but I should bring it in for a diagnostic test which ran around $118 just to look at. Since nothing appeared wrong with my car I waited because the "key" light would go off. It came back on the day I had the incident and left me stranded on my lunch hour with no power to start my car. I again called Nissan and they were not sure what the problem was. I had to have my car towed to the nearest Nissan dealership which ran a diagnostic test. I then received a phone call that afternoon to say it was my steering lock assembly and the part was expensive to replace. I was told the labor would not be much since it was an easy fix. So this problem turned out to the a $1,200 fix. I decided to go online to see if I can find this part any cheaper. I then ran across many websites and blogs with Nissan owners having the exact same problem with car from 2009 to 2011. Apparently this is not something Nissan was unaware of. The service rep at the dealership said she has seen other 370z's with this same problem and just had one towed to the service center 2 weeks ago. I find it hard to believe that with this may cases being reported and blogged about online why Nissan is not doing something about this. This can be a very dangerous situation if left stranded in a car that will not start. When you try to be proactive Nissan service centers claim they are unaware of the issue. Something needs to be done and quickly. This will be the last Nissan ever purchased if not resolved and reimbursed for expense.
On Dec 2 2014 I noticed that the intelligent ket light was on. Once I got home after work I looked it up on the manuel and it said it could be a malfunction and to contact a Nissan dealer. Well on the mooring of 3 Dec I go to work and no light. At around 2030 I got released for the day. Go to start my car and nothing. Had to get a ride to a store and wait for wife to pick me up.
Tried to start car in the morring and it did start moved up 5 feet to wash car washed car then tried to start again nothing would not start at all found out it was the stearing lock aaembly this is a know part to fail and theirs no way it should on a car so new it happens to a lot of Nissans 2009 2010 370z its a known part to fail and when it does theirs nothing you can do to start the car it cost 1600 dollars to fix and Nissan kknows theirs a problem but no recall the gtr had the same problem but they fixed that because its a very costly car but the 370 z nothing yet the dealer just laugh and I also called Nissan and they did the same thing when thet no this happens alot with this part I think its very bad for Nissan to treat their people like that I will never deal with Nissan again and I showed Nissan over a thousand emails and problems with this part and they just dont care I can understand if it was not a problem that much but this stearing box on the 370 z is a big problem 40 thousand dollar car and Nissan has or dont care ib would just give it back too them but once they have your money Nissan can care less it seems like its sad.
Drove my car to the store that was approximately 2 miles away from my home. On the way there, the car was operating in good working condition, as usual. The key indicator light on the dashboard lit up but then quickly disappeared. After going into the store, I got back into my car and tried to start it up with the push start button, but nothing happened. Since the key indicator light had gone off previously, I though the battery on my key was running out, so I inserted it in the key port, which indicated the key still had power to in. I tried to start the car again but nothing happened. The car was completely dead. I then called a family member to bring my spare key to see if that worked, but the same results happened. I then called a tow truck, who almost wasn't able to move my car onto the truck because it was completely locked up, and towed my car to the Nissan dealer. It was there that they told me that the steering lock went out and could not function without it.
My car was parked at work and I went to start it when I was leaving to go home and it failed to start for two days, called Nissan they could not tell me what was wrong with it. They would not even had a tow truck come and tow the car. I had to have car towed thru my insuarance company to Nissan dealership and they said it was the steering wheel lock. $1,300 later. I was stranded at work late at night. The internet searches show this has been a common problem for the 370z owners since 2009. I feel Nissan should have a mandatory recall for a part that is likely to fail at any time and leave the driver stranded. I am terrified to turn my car off not a good feeling. Please help! and would appreciate being compensated for something that is not my fault.
Stopped the vehicle at a gas station to refuel. Upon completion of refueling, depressed the brake and pressed the starter button (normal starting procedure). The starter indicator would not change from "lock", the vehicle would not crank, and no accessories would activate. The vehicle was subsequently towed to a local Nissan dealer. After evaluation, dealer stated the "steering lock" unit had failed. After an internet search, this appears to be part 48700-jf00d. The Nissan dealer representative stated this issue is covered under a TSB, but I cannot confirm at this time. The dealer stated the part will not be available for at least two weeks, and Nissan will not offer a courtesy vehicle. Internet searches show this has been a common problem for 370z owners since 2009, and the steering lock was removed in 2012 models forward. I feel Nissan should have done a mandatory recall for a part that is likely to fail at any time and leave the driver stranded.
It is my understanding that Nissan has had many issues of the steering lock feature that fails in the Nissan 370z. If this problem has been so wide spread the consumer should not have to fork over 1200$ for an issue that's so well known. This should be a recall because they are going to piss off alot of Nissan buyers for a condition that's so widespread. I think the fact that the part is so back ordered should indicate to you that you have a big problem.
Infamous steering lock problem. Went to start car and got the yellow key symbol and push start button light showed lock. Had to pay $170 to have it towed to Nissan.

Car would not start, no warning at all. Had car towed to dealer. Replaced faulty steering lock assembly. This is a known issue with Nissan and they need to recall or extend the warranty on this part. I am out $1200 for an issue Nissan is well aware of.
Attempted to start my 370z this morning, key light would come on, and the lock light came on the push button start. But no response. After some research, it appears that the steering wheel lock mechanism is stuck halfway so the steering wheel turns but nothing is indicating to the ecu that it is unlocked. Nissan had issued a recall for the same part on 2009 gt-r's (ntb10-025 p0309) but not on 370z's. It became such an issue that in 2011/2012 Nissan stopped installing the device on the 370z model. More and more 370z owners are becoming stranded because of this defect and it should be recalled and replaced.
Dealer says it's the steering wheel lock issue. Warranty expired and now they're asking 1,200 to fix the issue for parts and labor. This is ridiculous. Apparently it's a common issue for all 2009 and 2010 z's and they're only recalling some 2010 models. I need this recalled because of the obvious defective part that was installed in the car. Unless I can get this fixed at no cost I will not purchase another Nissan. Ever. They already have awful brakes and rotors and now this? shame.
Went to the supermarket and when I returned to the car 15 min later to return home the car wouldn't start dealer confirmed that the steering lock had broken and the fix was between $1300-1700. The same issue was found on the Nissan gtr but Nissan issued a recall for the $85k but neglected to extend the recall to include the 370z.
I drove my 2009 Nissan 370z to work in the morning and when I went to start my car at lunch. . . Nothing. It was just dead. All of the lights worked, alarm, power seats, name it. But when you went to start, nothing. Turns out the steering wheel lock broke. The fact that this is such a common occurrence, a simple 30 second internet search can diagnose the problem, frustrates me. How come it was taken care of in the more expensive models (the gtr's), but it wasn't recalled for the 2009/10 370z's? they've replaced the problem part in the 2012's, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they've left thousands of people stranded and have done nothing about it. I lucked out because I bought an extended warranty, but what about the people who have to pay out of pocket? the cost for the repairs is over a $1000, with the part itself in the hundreds. This is ridiculous and needs to be addressed.
Please issue recall! steering lock control unit failed with cost approximately $1000-$2000. Thank you!.
Steering wheel lock mechanism crapped out. . Read more...
Car would not start. Left me stranded. Had to call a flatbed truck to take it to the garage. They told me it was the steering lock unit that caused the problem.
My 2009 Nissan 370z failed to start on Feb 21st without any warning. The intelligent key light was on while trying to start the car by pushing the 'start' button. Tried inserting the key fob into the fob slot but the car still failed to start. . Read more...
Steering lock control unit failed.
Car won't start. Steering locking mechanism failed.
The car stop working when I tried to turn it on. I towed it to the shop and found out the steering lock and given up and this was very rare. . . . I searched only and found out so many people had the same issues with the same vehicle. . How is it that the car never been in any accident and now having an issue with electrical. I had stereo issues, electrical issues, and now the steering wheel issue. . They don't cover the car cause there is no recall. . How do companies get away with this. . I can not believe there is nothing that is being done about this.
Steering locking unit (part: 48700-jf00a) failed. Note, there are revision models of this part 48700-jf00b, 48700-jf00c, 48700-jf00d, and 48700-jf00e -- all eventually fail. This part begins to fail as early as just a few thousand miles on the car's odometer. This is a common issue with Nissan 370z 2009-2011 models. Once this happens the car is stranded as the starter is disabled. The car must then be towed to a dealership for repair. Repair costs average between $1,100 and $2,000.
Steering wheel lock assembly stopped working.
Parked car while getting lunch, tried to restart car afterwards and ignition wouldn't cycle (wont go to acc or on, stays at lock). Indicator light implied keyfob needed to be inserted into the slot. After doing so, still would not start. Replaced keyfob battery, jumped the car; none worked. Eventually had to be towed to local dealer. Steering lock unit was determined to have failed. Unlike most reported failures, this one failed with the steering wheel unlocked (mechanism never engaged), however it would still not start. Parts came in at $719 and labor at $259. Had I been made aware of these costs before the work was done, as I requested in a voicemail left for the dealer, I would never have agreed and would have done it myself. Although this event may not occur while the vehicle is in motion, posing an immediate and apparent safety issue, it did result in being stranded in 10degree winter weather. Fortunately, this occurred in the middle of the day with people in the vicinity to help and a cell phone charged. Had it happened 12hrs later and with a dead cellphone, it would pose a considerable safety issue in sub10 degree weather. This is a well known issue, known by Nissan, and seems to have been addressed for the gt-r's under ntb10-025 issued 3/18/10. Yet, for some reason, it has not yet been corrected for the 370z. According to service department at dealership where this work was performed, there were too many instances of this occurrence in their system to begin counting them all when I requested that information for reporting purposes. For others information, exact part number on the sticker of the replaced unit is as follows: 48700 9n00a-b1-01 t 4601101c e08 m01 31. 03. 09.
Drove to 7/11 to get gas. Turned the car off. When I got back in the car to leave the car would not start. There was an amber key on the dashboard. There have been a major number of complaints filed for this same reason. The immobilizer locked out the wheel shaft which locked out the key faub. Since the car thinks it has been stolen the car will do nothing. No Nissan dealership is open on a Sunday and they are knowingly doing nothing about the issue. I never received any notices that there could have been an issue in the 3 years I've had my car. There has been a huge number of complaints on blogs which I discovered today after attempting to get my car started again.
Vehicle won't start because the steering lock malfunctioned. This is a very well documented issue with the 370z, and people in forums weren't surprised at all about the issue. This renders the car inoperable since it won't start. Nissan themselves seem to be aware of the issue, since 2012 and up models of this car don't even have the steering lock anymore. But even though they are aware of this issue a recall hasn't been issued. I had read about this issue before I even bought the car since it seems to be very common. In hindsight I wish I had educated myself more on the subject to take preventive measures since this issue is so common and so expensive to fix (part costs north of 500 dollars). But then again, buyers shouldn't be concerned with this at all, but Nissan should be very concerned. So I'm hoping you can get Nissan to issue a recall for this.
