1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2014

- faulty intake valve timing control solenoid valve - intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness is open or shorted - intake valve timing control solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection - faulty camshaft position sensor - camshaft position sensor harness is open or shorted - camshaft position sensor circuit poor electrical connection - faulty crankshaft position sensor (pos) since the intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or close. Before replacing the valve, change engine oil and filter and reset engine code. When there is a gap between angle of target and phase-control angle degree, the valve will stop working and the ecm will trigger the p0021 code. Possible symptoms - engine light on (or service engine soon warning light)- lack/loss of power- engine rough idle p0021 Nissan description this mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The ecm receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ecm sends on/off pulse duty signals to the intake valve timing control solenoid valve depending on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake valve to increase engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in high-speed range. The intake valve timing control solenoid valve changes the oil amount and direction of flow through intake valve timing control unit or stops oil flow. The longer pulse width advances valve angle. The shorter pulse width retards valve angle. When on and off pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve stops oil pressure flow to fix the intake valve angle at the control position.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Simple engine heat appears to disintegrate the pre-catalytic converter part on a 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5l engine. The engine sucks in the broken parts, which then damage the engine, requiring that the engine be replaced.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Altima. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle completely shut down and lost all power steering. The contact had the vehicle repaired on February 6, 2008 for NHTSA campaign id number 07v527000 (engine and engine cooling). Approximately three days after the recall repair was performed, she noticed the same symptoms with the engine, but of a milder degree. The vehicle appeared as if it would stall after the repair was made, but did not. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle is currently at the dealer. The purchase date and powertrain were unknown. The current mileage was 78,000 and failure mileage was 77,900.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2008

We own a 2002 Nissan Altima (purchased at autoway Nissan, clearwater, FL in 2002) and have experienced the same mechanical failure as many who have posted to this and many other sites. With 100,300 miles on the vehicle we have just learned the catalytic converter has disintegrated and metal parts are now throughout the engine. As a result we are required to have a new engine installed or walk away from a 5 year old car that, other than this defect, is in excellent condition. Upon speaking to autoway Nissan we were informed since the car has exceeded the 8 years or 80,000 mile warranty on the catalytic converter Nissan would not cover the cost of repairs. Upon typing in 'Nissan catalytic converter' in google key word search my husband and I found it is enlightening and concerning to read many accounts of the same mechanical failure. I'm sure there are many, many more accounts of the same mechanical failure that we've yet to uncover. What can we do as consumers to have our rights protected? it is apparent Nissan has a defective part on at least 2002 / 2003 Altima. Any advise us on how to we as consumers can get Nissan to take ownership of a failed device.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

Recent recall for 2002 Nissan Altima dated 11/07/2007. I recently called Nissan north America regarding a recall I saw while surfing the web. I called Nissan twice, Nov. 7, 2007 & Jan. 10. 2008, and they gave me a file# and faxed me a letter stating "these repairs are free of charge to you". Yet when I tried to have it fixed at the Nissan dealership they said I had to pay for a diagnostic or they would not fix it even under the recall. I have spent thousands of dollars already, regarding this problem with my 2002 Nissan Altima since 2007, I am disabled and on a fixed income, this car problem has put me in critical financial trouble. When I notified Nissan north America, inc. Of my problem trying to get it fixed they told me to try again, because they have no control over how much the dealerships charge. If I still had the problem getting it fixed they would deal with my problem then. Does integrity mean anything to anyone anymore? this car is a death trap. This car has shut off during operation on the freeway at a speed of 70 mph. It is not true when its said it only stalls at low speed. I and my granddaughter are a witness to that. Does anyone care about a human life?.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

Catastrophic engine failure for Nissan Altima related to power valve/butterfly valve intake manifold design. Third generation Altima's qr25de 4-cylinder and vq35de 6-cylinder engines have unfortunately been affected by a recall related to the intake manifold and the power valves, also known as the butterfly valve. The technical service bulletin p5202 - does not mention all affected vehicles for production years w same design. This has left some owners affected by the problem with no recourse/remedy for what in some cases has amounted to catastrophic engine failure. The power valve is a series of four plates in the qr25de 4-cylinder and 6 plates in the vq35de 6-cylinder engines, one per cylinder. The plates open and close simultaneously to allow more air into the combustion chamber for increased power. Each plate is held in place by two screws. The screws have been known to come loose as well as the plates and are then ingested into the engine via the intake ports. Problem is initially exhibited by ses(service engine soon) light coming on and/or blinking. Upon obd meter reading, code will be p0304, or similar which is random cylinder misfire or cylinder 4 misfire. Electrode on spark plug has been bent closed as a result of the power valve retaining screw vibrating loose and being ingested into the engine. The screw then bounces around in the combustion chamber, hitting the spark plug and bending the electrode shut, preventing spark in that cylinder. Additionally, the screw(s) and part of the broken plates, in some cases have made their way through the engine and into the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter, thus causing the catalytic converter to prematurely disintegrate as well as become ingested into the engine. For some reason, Nissan north America has decided to not remedy all vehicles affected by this admitted flaw obviously, this could cause engine failure at the wrong place and the wrong time, resulting in serious bodily harm and/or fatality.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

Following the format requested above: 1: events leading up to the failure: simply bought the car and drove it. . . Seems that all 02 4 cylinder Altima owners are experiencing issue b/c of design flaw! 2. Failure: the pre-catalyst completely disintegrates into the engine and causes the engine to fail! consequence: need a new engine. 3. What was done to correct the failure: nothing but hide! they mask the problem to get past all warranties. Nissan USA is absolutely hiding from their responsibility to provide a safe vehicle! they started by hiding the pre -catalyst internal disintegration notification within a recall for a potential exhaust pipe hanger pin problem. They knew the pre-catalyst was disintegrating into engines causing damage, but didn't release that clearly to avoid needing to get past warranties and replace engines. My car was running rough and the dealer then replaced the precat (49k miles) and the car was never quite the same, but it did run so I thought all was fine. Obviously the first one had disintegrated into the engine and the Nissan didn't warn me of what was to come! I have taken very good care of this car and now have 98k on it. . But the end is very close. I had ses reports of p0420 and then later a report for a 4th valve issue. . . Now the car drinks oil at 1 - 2 quarts a week or it is completely out of oil! there is no smoke, smell, or drips. The oil is just gone! the dealer says I need a new engine and said there is nothing they can do. They directed me to Nissan consumer affairs- they have been very slow to respond. I am hopeful that they will replace my engine so that I don't have to worry about my engine seizing while I am driving on the highway or turning across in front of oncoming traffic! they have had my car for 10 days and I am waiting on consumer affairs to return my calls.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2004

The 2002 Altima started to stall. I took the car to the dealership. I was advised that the car had 3 recalls on it and I should have been notified a year in a half before. I took the car back 3 times and on the third time I was adivsed that the car would need a new motor. That was on Mar 15,2004. I called April 24,2004 at 3 pm and was advised by the manager handling the car that Nissan approved then disapprove the replacement order then reapproved it again. He adivsed me he would call me with further. This has gone on for the passed 6 weeks and the car is no longer working but I'm paying for it.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2002

2002 Nissan Altima. 1)rear pads + rotors worn at 35,000 miles: replaced at owners cost. Now 83000 miles(may '08): dealer has told rotors and pad need replacement and possibly calipers need to be evaluated. At 75000 mile check everything was ok. (per the service record). In Jan'08 I had specifically asked the breaks to be inspected. Told ok. Now suddenly the rotors are shot. Other than a squeal sound for 2 days no other symptoms. Concerned about how brakes go from fine to shot in 3 months. I think it is a big safety concern if the time it takes breaks to disintegrate is less than a 3 month period. 2) engine not starting after parked in the cold. Happened twice once at 48000 miles. (lower bill. ) 2nd time at 78000 miles. (huge bill ~$1000). Multiple parts replaced and serviced. Highlighted as problem on various forums with this particular Nissan model. Evaluate possibility related to ecm timings etc.
