1 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2015

I was driving on the highway with my kids in the car when my car shutoff all of a sudden. I was not able to get it started and cars were whizzing by me . Finally after several tries that seemed like forever, the car started and I took the first exit off the highway. Then once I made it off the highway the car check engine light came on. I made it back home but the car would not start properly. It comes on and then shutoff or stays on for a few minutes and then makes a sound like its going to cutoff if you put it in gear. Finally had the car checked and was told it was the camshaft/crankshaft sensors based on the codes. My family could have been killed if this would have happened during rush hour. Something needs to be done. These parts seem to continuously go bad and endanger the safety of everyone. I have less than 70,000 miles on this car.

2 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving at various speeds mph, the vehicle starts to decelerate as the check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the crank position sensor or cam position sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number 03v455000: (engine, engine cooling). The failure mileage was 88,000. Sg.

3 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

I was sitting at a red light and when it turned green I went to go and my car stalled out. My check engine light came on and it's due to cam and crankshaft sensors. Drove the car to work today the car stalled out again completely shut itself off. Once again had to pull over on the side of the rode the best I could turn the car off and thankfully it turned back on. Called Nissan today spoke with a consumer affairs supervisor named [xxx] and they are telling me that my VIN # is not included in the recall for this claim on crankshaft sensors and that they would be able to forward my information to a regional office for consumer affairs and see if they can get them to pay for the parts but in the mean time I have to get a diagnostics report done on the car at a Nissan dealership and I have to pay for the diagnostics report and they will not waive it for me and in order to get approval for the parts I have to get the diagnostics report. So they transferred me to a dealership in albany NY a Nissan dealership service department spoke with a guy named ed he said they would need my car for 24-48 hours and can not provide me with a rental, can not waive the diagnostics fee and they wouldn't be able to get my car in until aweek from now. This is outrageous. People are going to end up being seriously injured if not killed by this malfunction. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2012

My daughter was driving home from work in my 2003 Nissan Altima when the car suddenly stopped running, the steering wheel froze and she nearly ran off the road. Thank goodness there were no other cars coming and she was able to pull off the road with no incident. I pulled the codes and found it to be the p0335 (crankshaft position sensor) and p0725 (engine speed sensor). After searching the web, it appears there are many people with the same issue. I looked on the NHTSA website and found NHTSA campaign id number: 03v455000, Nissan recall no. R3022 that states exactly what did happen - the check engine light came on and the engine stopped without warning. The remedy is that a dealer replace the crankshaft position sensor. So, I called Nissan, found the other recall that is related to the sensor, took the car to the dealer (barely - I drove and the car stopped twice - again, lucky there was no crash). The dealer called and said he could not fix this recall because the sensor was bad. Now I have to go back and pickup the car and pray again that I don't have a crash coming home. Seems totally unreasonable that Nissan would have a recall for this exact problem - the crankshaft position sensor - for, among many others, 2002-2003 Altimas and yet there are many people out there with these cars that Nissan won't fix. I was laid off and certainly cannot afford a $300 fix for a $40 part so we will have to drive this death car until I can figure out how to get it fixed. And pray every time I get in it that we don't end crashing the car, hurting myself, my young twins, my older daughter or anyone else on the road. This is a severely dangerous issue and Nissan should replace all cars - not just a select few.

5 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

Vehicle has stalled - engine stopped - in traffic several times. The cam and crank shaft sensors are the cause of this issue and Nissan refuses to recall these parts. It is absurd that the same parts have been recalled for other Altimas built in the same year, yet several vins, including mine, were excluded. The recall for my VIN was to reprogram the computer to prevent the failed parts from telling the computer to shut the car off. This recall has done nothing to prevent the issue. This is a safety issue, not only for myself and my family but also other drivers. This issue has been reported numerous times on the internet by other drivers. When will the NHTSA stand up for the citizens it was created to protect?.

6 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

Multiple times while driving between 30-45 mph the vehicle has stalled and not produced full engine power when pushing on the accelerator. This has caused serious concern for the safety of my family and myself. Check engine light came on and I took the vehicle to Nissan service repair (August 2011, ~94k miles). Nissan ran diagnostics and stated that the circuit board for crank/cam sensors had failed. Paid $430 to replace crankshaft and cam/crank sensors. Fast forward to December 2012 (~110k miles) where I experienced the same exact issues along with reduced engine power when pressing on the accelerator. Another local mechanic detected that the cam/crank sensors needed to be replaced again. I did some research and found out about recall #03v455000, which describes the exact symptoms that I have been having. I called the Nissan service department that replaced the sensors in 2011 who said that my VIN wasn't included in the recall so I didn't qualify. After reading the complaints on this site for this specific year/make/model, it is beyond me how nothing hasn't been flagged about this being an issue. All these people are having the same problems (multiple times) yet they are told their VIN's don't qualify under the recall?? something is fishy there. Other complaints with the same exact issue include the following numbers: odi id numbers: 10416743, 10384742,10370526,10342438,10332467, 10318898, 10318045, 10314479, 10283487, 10278805. Thank you for any assistance or light that can be shed on this issue.

7 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2009

I was driving my vehicle, 2003 Nissan Altima, at a low speed, when for no apparent reason, the vehicle died. It was during the evening hours. I was lucky the driver behind me didn't run into me. I was able to restart the car, and drive off. The car didn't do it again, but a week later, the check engine light came on. I took the car into the dealership. They told me the cause of the problem was a crank angle sensor. It was faulty and that's why my car died, without any warning. I found out that, Nissan had a recall on this item. I called Nissan north America inc and spoke to a person name david. David confirmed that they did have a recall on the sensor but it was only on certain years for the Altima. I told david that maybe all the Altima's with this sensor should be recalled and replaced. Further investigation, I found a owner notification from Nissan telling me that my Altima, there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and ecm. I took it to the dealer after receiving their notice. The dealer reprogram the ecm unit, but never replaced the sensor. I told david at Nissan that they should have replaced the sensor at the time when they reprogram the ecm. It was very scary when my car just died suddenly. I was very lucky I didn't get hurt. I am letting you know because I feel Nissan should recall all their vehicle equip with this sensor. I was very very lucky not to have been involved in an accident. I told david at Nissan that I don't feel safe driving my car anymore.

8 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2009

2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5. The car shuts off while driving, in the middle of traffic almost was hit by an 18 wheeler behind me. Sometimes it won't crank so I've had the crank shaft position sensor replaced. I've been told that all the 2003 Altimas have the same problem, but there is no recall on them.

9 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2009

2003, Nissan Altima, 3. 5l, 60,000 miles. January 2009, traveling in south florida traffic, all dash warning lights come on and car stalls. Car restarts, hard, and is driven to ft lauderdale dealership. $100 diagnostic reveals crank shaft position sensor and 2 cam sensors need to be replaced. Our son, service writer for Nissan in texas, tells us the dealership has doubled the estimate and to keep looking for a mechanic (since car is no longer under warranty). Tells us the maxima for this year has a recall for this but not the Altima with 3. 5l. We drive to a local mechanic, stalling several more times, in rush-hour traffic, he estimates $600+/- and we leave car for repair while I enter the hospital for breast cancer surgery. Car is repaired when I leave hospital, huge bill comes out of my pocket, and Nissan will not consider reimbursement, although many hundreds of these vehicles are experiencing identical problems! no recall notice was received, no notice of the ecm recall was received and the car is now sluggish on acceleration. Car is meticulously maintained, uses only premium gas and otherwise a good vehicle to own. Nissan's refusal to acknowledge this and dealerships gouging customers makes this situation even more distasteful!.

10 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2009

I have had the service engine soon light come on and twice I have had the crank shaft sensor replaced in the last 6 months. Periodically my car will stall, sometimes when I am moving, and other times it is really hard to start. I have only 42000 miles on my car. I wrote a letter to Nissan and have not heard back from them. I took my car to the local dealership and asked her about the 2006 recall I found on line and she told me my VIN number did not fall under the recall and the problems I was experiencing were coincidental. That doesn't even begin to make sense to me. What can be done to have this ongoing problem resolved? it's obvious it is happening to numerous Nissan Altima owners.

11 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2007

My 2003 Nissan Altima stalled on a major highway due to the crank sensor failure. Lucky I was able to get out of the flow of traffic with no accident but it was a very dangerous situation.

12 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

Check engine light. The code was crank sensor needs to be replaced. Car stops running when you are driving.

13 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The contact received a recall notice for the crank angle sensor and the electronic control module. The dealer charged her $190. 13 to replace the crank position sensor. She thought the cost was covered by the recall and felt that she should not have been charged. The recall campaign id number was unavailable. No failures have occurred at this time. The current mileage is 57,300 and the failure mileage was inapplicable.

14 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2007

On several instances the engine cuts off while driving. Major safety concern. Eventually, the check engine light came on. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer informed me of recall campaign to reprogram the ecm. Also, they found error codes p0725 and p0335. They told me that I had to replace my crank shaft position sensor (at my cost -- this was not part of the recall). After the dealer completed the recall work, the car still stalled that very day on the way home. Took the car to my neighborhood mechanic who replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Check engine light was cleared by mechanic and has not lit up again, however, the vehicle has stalled while driving again. This sounds very similar to the symptoms which led to the recall of the 2002 Nissan Altima's. My car was manufactured in December 2002, but was not included in the 2002 recall. The 2003 recall only consisted of reprogramming the ecm -- which did not solve the problem. This is a serious safety concern as the vehicle still cuts out at random times in moving traffic. Please investigate -- this is similar to hundreds of other complaints under 2003 Nissan Altima's that I found reading through the complaints on this website -- please connect the dots and make Nissan own up to the problem.

15 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2007

Two days ago, my car stalled while I was turning left into a parking lot. Thankfully, I was able to coast the car to a safe location since I am six months pregnant and unable to push a car. The car was towed to Nissan of elk grove, where the next day they diagnosed the problem as a failed crank position sensor. I was upset, because I had the crank position sensor replaced last year after my car starting cutting out on me while I was driving on the freeway and the same dealer determined the crank sensor needed replacing. I had the dealer replace the crank sensor yesterday and assumed the problem was corrected. However, as I was backing out of the parking spot, my car stalled and I was unable to restart it. I promptly informed the service manager for Nissan of elk grove, and he managed to start my car after with great difficulty. He drove it around for a few minutes and then informed me that the car almost "cut-out" on him a few times and that the rpm needle was "stiif" and "acting strange". Presently, my car is still at the dealer while I await an update on the cause.

16 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2007

The 2003 Nissan Altima recently started stalling for no apparent reason. Initially it happened while at a stop light, then pulling out of a gas station there was minimal risk of an accident. Then yesterday as I was driving down the road the car hesitated briefly before accelerating and then within seconds all power was lost. It took nearly 15 tries to restart, at which point, I parked it and had it towed to the dealership, who wa stelling me that there was no sign that the crank sensors need to be replaced, which was what I was told would take care of the problem), and therewas nothing they could do if they can't get it to repeat what happened yesterday. A month ago, I had ii at dealer when this problem originally occurred and the computer was reprogrammed. I was told that it took care of the problem in about 85% of the cases. I' was at a loss. I have only one car and I need it to be reliable. I could not take a chance of being on the interstate at rush hour in a car that might decide to stall on me. I have seen many complaints of this same nature ,and was wondering why no one seemed to know what the problem was. Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.

17 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

My wife's 2003 Nissan Altima died while driving down the highway. She had to get out and push the car to the side of the road with my 8 year son trying to steer the car. Then the car would not start. When I arrived I got the car started and attempted to drive it to the local Nissan dealership since the "service engine soon" light was on. While crossing the intersection to get into the dealership parking lot, the car died on me. I had enough speed to coast through the intersection and up to entrance to the parking lot. The next day the service advisor for the dealership calls me and tells me the car need 2 recalls ( one of which I knew about -headlights, the other was to reprogram the ecm. They would have to also replace the cam & crank sensors for $213 which of course was not under warranty. We have had the car for 3. 5 years and it has 33,174 miles on it. After reading that the recall involving the ecm reprogram was to repair a problem that could cause the engine to stop running due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and the ecm - electronic control module. It stated that the "service engine soon" light could come on, the engine stops running while driving and that this could result in a crash without warning! I called 1-800-nissan1 and logged my complaint that my wife (or myself) could have been killed and the very least that Nissan could do was cover the repair under warranty. I received a call back from some kind of engineer type guy who gave me the 20 minute technical version of why Nissan was sorry but tough crap on us covering this. I demanded to speak to someone else and was given your web address. I still say Nissan knew this was extremely dangerous and should have made a stronger announcement sooner to get this corrected. They should be on the hook here not me!!.

18 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2006

Well I haven't necessarily "crashed" yet. I took my car into town north Nissan off 183 due to a recall notice that was sent to my home. I got the vehicle back, as they said that they would need it for at least a day, 2 1/2 hours later. I noticed that the service engine soon light was still on. I took the car back immediately the following day. Nobody was willing to help me. So later that evening I took my car to the auto zone to have a diagnostics scan done on it. Sure enough the problem wasn't fixed. It stated that the crank shaft sensor was malfunctioning which was the key to the whole problem as this can cause engine failure. My car has completely turned itself off on my while drive (however the car was not in motion).

19 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2006

2003 Nissan Altima was at the dealer for the recall ecm re program , after that down hill , dealer told me the code also called for a catalytic converter , the car stalled 15 times, one time I had to stay over night on a fast food place. Next day a mechanic changed the crank pos sensor , then called for another sensor similar on shape , then back to the dealer, this time the car accelerates for no reason , they try to charge me for the diagnostic(for catalytic aging) they told me it was not the catalytic converter (and I have that in writing) that I need a throttle ? chamber 959+ tax. Finally I think I make a mistake going in on the first place or the same issues the 2002 Altima had is repeating on the 2003 and Nissan is waiting for something real bad to happen, by the way , I call them about 6 times and no real solution just passing the buck.

20 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2006

My vehicle's engine stopped running while waiting at a red light. The vehicle would not even crank its engine. After 10 mins the engine cranked and started, I had it towed to the nearest Nissan dealership, and explained of a recall that stated, " that some 2003 Altimas might stop running while driving due to a problem between the crank angle sensor and the ecm". When the service department called me back, they stated that I had to have the position sensor replaced and that I would have to pay for it out of pocket. When I explained to them that on the recall notice I had received it clearly stated that "if any one had to pay top have the issue resolved in before the campaign that they be eligible for a reimbursement. The service department repeated that replacing the sensor was not a part of the recall, and I would have to pay for it, out of pocket.

21 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2006

2003 Altima's check engine light illuminated. The consumer received a recall notice pertaining to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and the electronic control module. The consumer called the dealer and made an appointment to have the recall work done. Prior to the appointment the consumer's vehicle began to exhibit symptoms of the recall, the engine stopped running, and the check engine light illuminated. The consumer contacted the dealer immediately and scheduled an appointment for the next day. The tech informed the consumer that the crank sensor had to be replaced and they could not reprogram the computer without replacing it.

22 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2006

2003 Altima throttle body was defective causing check engine soon light to illuminate. Chamber assembly had to be replaced. The consumer believes that the recall she received for the crank angle sensor and electronic control module is related to the throttle assembly which had to be replaced.

23 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2006

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that on 3 or 4 occasions the vehicle shut off while driving 45 mph. The contact stated that each time this occurred the vehicle would not restart immediately. However, on one occasion the vehicle wouldn't restart for an hour. The mechanic serviced the vehicle due to the failure on 04/26/2006. Then, on may 1, 2006 Nissan replaced the crank and cam sensors. On January 4, 2007 the contact received a recall notice for the crank and cam sensors. The contact has an invoice for the repairs. The current mileage is 69,000 and the failure mileage was 49,013 the consumer has since had the vehicle repaired and wants to be reimbursed for expenses. Update 4/30/07.

24 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2006

For the past few days, car has been stalling and refusing to start up. Once, it happened on the freeway and luckily the traffic was not heavy, so could manage to take it to the shoulder. Managed to restart the car after a few minutes of trying. Service engine light turns on, and there is hardly any power when you press the accelerator. Took it to a mechanic, and he told me the crank position sensor needs to be replaced. Searched online and found that there was a recall for this exact symptom, but when I called the dealer, my VIN # does not have a recall. That is so strange. I hope Nissan realizes that there are other Altima's from 2003 that have the same problem.

25 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2006

The vehicle will stall during operation. The vehicle will hesitate during operation. Dealer confirmed that the crank position sensor is faulty.

26 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

While driving the car or at idle speed, it would stall at any given time, hot or cold. I would have to restart the car and have found the crank sensor needed to be replaced.

27 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2004

Do not really know? I found out only after extensive searching and multiple visits to the dealership. That the crankshaft position sensor was the problem. Recalled on other vehicles but not on 2003 Nissan Altima. Same issue as with the 2002 Nissan Altima. That has been recalled.

28 Crankshaft Position Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3. 5 se. The crankshaft position sensor has now failed twice, the second time the car just died while driving! fortunately I was not on the highway with a big-rig following me, or most likely I would not be alive today. The car is still in the shop with the part on back order, which tells me that they (Nissan) are having lots of failures with this part. I consider this to be a significant safety issue and fell that a recall on this item should at least be investigated. Thanks, ronald j. Colfer.
