36 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. After the vehicle was started, it failed to shift out of park and the intelligent key system warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that unknown parts related to the steering lock mechanism needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,000.

37 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

Issues with steering wheel which leads to the car not turning on at all .

38 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2017

As I was leaving work on Friday night at about 11:35pm when I got to my car, I found myself stuck in a parking lot trying to turn on my ignition. The car didn't give me no warning as the dashboard gave me a symbol of the word "key" display with a key below it. I would push the brake and the start button and the car would not make a sound. I had to get my car towed to my house in order to remove it from the parking lot. As I was going through the manual I found out that it was the steering ignition lock that was causing this issue with the ignition. I'm a 24 year old pregnant woman and this is really unsafe. I was reading online and it said that Nissan gave a 6 year extended warranty for this issue but I never received a notice from the dealer while I was paying it off and now that the issue has popped out being 2017 the dealer is telling me that the warranty has expired in 2015 and it will cost me $1,200 to fix the issue.

39 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2017

I was at a gas station in a unsafe area (high crime) and my car would not start back up. My car went into "lock mode", after research the steering lock can malfunction on the 2009 Nissan Altima. Looks like the warranty used to be 8 years and it was changed to 6 years. This would have been the 8th year for me. I was terrified being stuck with no ride. It took me an hour to find someone to pick me up. I had to leave the car overnight. If this is a common issue why was the warranty shortened? or why is there not a lifetime warranty on this part? being stranded for an issue that is the manufacturers fault is unacceptable. I have never been more scared in my life than I was last night. I sat in my car waiting for a tow. I am a female and I had multiple men approach my car. Terrified. Unsafe. This problem could have been much much worse but it needs to be addressed and under warranty.

40 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2016

Parked in garage, wouldn't start, steering lock system was not working so the engine didn't recognize the push button start, had to have it towed to auto mechanic to have the part replaced for $1,000 plus towing! Nissan stopped using this part in 2010 so they must know it was a bad part. I could have been anywhere when this happened and been stranded.

41 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

The steering column recall was repaired, but warranty was off. Had to pay out of pocket. Automatic transmission stopped and recall on it was off. Automobile was in motion when it slowed to a crawl on the highway.

42 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2016

First problem is stationary while parked. Car was bumped by another while parked and steering column locked up. It happened again without being bumped for unknown reason. Had to tow to garage to unlock. Has happened twice now. Expensive to fix . Second problem is while in motion on highways. On hot day, during longer trips where uphill climbing is present, the engine starts to lose power going up hill and manual states it is a built in safety feature to protect engine however this is a big safety hazard because you have to pull over and let the car cool down for a while before driving again. This has now happened to my family 3 times.

43 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2016

Automatic transmission problem: the Altima's automatic transmission will not down shift after the car has been at highway speeds for an extended time (>1. 5 hours). This has happened to me multiple times driving on the new york state thruway on long road trips. The Altima is in overdrive, traveling at 65 mph. Then once I am driving up a fairly steep hill the car will not downshift to account for the incline. The car slows down from 65 mph to low speeds (e. G. 40 mph) and the engine will not go above 2000 rpm. The car does not come out of overdrive (6th gear). Attempts at pressing the accelerator all the way down or manually shifting to a lower gear has no effect. The only way to get the car to shift normally again once this happens is to pull over and turn off the car and restart it. This probably indicates a reboot on the transmission's computer is needed. Nissan has looked at the car a few times and has not been able to come up with a solution. This is a very dangerous problem as it can lead to a rear end accident.

44 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2016

Drove 40 miles to a shopping center one evening. Returning to car a signal on dashboard relayed that my car did not recognize my car key. Car would not start. No way to bypass the push button start. Due to the lateness of the hour and the fact we were flying overseas the next day, I had to have car towed to my home. Manual said if car started I could drive it home but needed to be taken to dealer for a safety check. Upon googling this problem I found many, many people have had the same problem. Tow truck driver said this was a very common problem with Nissans, thus people needing his services. Seems that we really should be calling tow drivers to see which vehicles are the least towed.

45 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2016

First time 2013 occured on freeway about 3 hrs into drive. While on the freeway at 75 mph the car began loosing power n speed quickly. Thought cars were going to slam into car. Pulled over turned off n placed key in charging compartment. 15 mins or so turned on n ran fine after that. 2015 on busy freeway began loosing power n speed. Pulled over placed key again then worked fine. 2016 its happened twice again on freeway going uphill speed dropped quickly. I thought semi-truck was going to slam. Scarred to death manage to pull out at 35 mph from 75mph. Disconnected battery let sit 15 mins worked okay loosing power to 60mph. Following day same thing but nothing helped to reset and speed dropped as low as 20-25mph and had to use manual feature to keep going. Auto tran stopped functioning. Now tran was not shifting. I'd have to ease up on throttle push it down to try n get some power. Very scarry when on freway.

46 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

My 2009 Nissan Altima VIN number [xxx] has many safety issues that are not being reported with my VIN number. The struts, steering lock box{which I paid 900. 00 to repair], abs speed control sensor, engine oil coolant and most of all the cvt transmission have went out on my car and Nissan will not help me repair. So I am forced to attempt this last try before joining a class action law suit. I have only had the car 2 years and now I am out 9000. 00 and the repairs are more than the car is worth. It would take too long to give detail about all the events so I pray someone at Nissan is decent enough to stand behind their product and make this right I am a single mom of three and ride less . I have contacted att. General [xxx] and bbb. My car is at [xxx] my number is [xxx] my name is [xxx] I have opened 5 cases and been denied. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

47 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. While driving home at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut down. The check engine light illuminated. The vehicle restarted and was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column lock fractured. The component was recalled and repaired previously; therefore, the manufacturer was not responsible for the repairs. The dealer also diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacture was made aware of the failure, but did not offer assistance. The failure mileage was 78,479.

48 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2015

Vehicle's transmission begins to whine and loses power within a hour of highway driving on a hot day. Vehicle cannot accelerate after, thus creating a hazard towards other vehicles. Nissan wont cover costs associated with this problem if it is out of warranty. Most Altima models from 2007 - 2009 are experiencing the same problem. I am surprised their isnt a recall for this particular issue.

49 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

While driving uphill from phoenix to flagstaff, the transmission overheated and went into "fail-safe" mode, which immediately causes the car to lose power and slow to about 20 mph. This was an incredibly dangerous situation in which I was forced to quickly pull off to the side of the 2-lane freeway.

50 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2015

This vehicle was purchased at 60,000 miles from a Nissan authorized dealer. The push button does not start the car. Sometimes it does start and will go off by itself. The shift tick is locked and won't change gears. I have called the dealership and Nissan and they both said nothing can be done. So I am paying for a car that does not work. When it does turn on I have to press the lock release on the shifter for it to engage into drive. Dangerous really. No accountability.

51 Power Train problem

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact was driving 60 mph, the vehicle failed to downshift from sixth gear. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 55,000.

53 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

Traveling on a 3 hour trip, of which was on the interstate at 75 to 80 mph speeds. After about 2 hours of running these speeds non stop I was in the right hand lane coming up on a small incline, the car lost power my speed instantly dropped to 60 mph. I stopped at the next gas station (ten miles down the road)to check the transmission fluid, it was fine. Got back on the road and it ran ok. The next day on the road the same thing happened, I stopped for 10 minutes, got back on the road then it ran ok. This could have been an accident if a vehicle was behind me. After researching the web I discovered many other owners have had this issue this Nissan is an interstate death trap that should be recalled.

54 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. While coasting uphill, the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated without the accelerator pedal being depressed. The contact crashed into a tree, but no injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection. The vehicle has not been repaired. 55 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

Flare and slip on highway merge. Intermittently shudder, surge and vibrate when accelerate from 0-30 or decelerate from 30-0 in stop and go traffic. It seems like this belt type(cvt) transmission control unit 's logic is not synchronized with gas throttle input. It is not as precise and responsive as step automatic transmission used by Nissan's Infiniti or GMC and Toyota etc. Therefore, it will create many dangerous delays in highway merge scenario from 0-60, with potential of getting hit at 60 mph speed.

56 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

Two incidents on same day: first incident at 7:15am: engine continued to rev without accelerator pedal being pushed. Braking distance much longer than normal. When car did stop, engine speed returned to normal. Second incidence at 10:45am (had stopped/started car 5 times, and driven approximately 40 miles since first occurrence): same engine over-rev issue while braking (accelerator pedal not pushed). After stopping (distance required much longer than normal), engine speed did not return to normal. When transmission was shifted to neutral, then park, to keep engine from propelling car, engine speed went to 6000rpm, without accelerator pedal being pushed. Had to turn engine off, then start again to get engine to respond normally.

57 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2013

As my family and I was traveling out of town, the car's acceleration appeared to decline out of no where. Even with the gas pedal pressed completely down to the floor, there was no change in speed. It made a whining noise as well. Since the first incident it has happened 8 times that I can count over the past year and a half. I have taken it to the dealer several times and they have not been able to recreate the issue nor get a code. So my issue still exists. It only happens on long distance trips where I drive more than 40 miles or so at 75 mph or more, usually 80mph. The most recent incident happened this past weekend and my young daughter and I were almost killed by a tractor trailer so I once again took the car in to the Nissan dealer and once again they could not recreate the issue. It's pretty frustrating when you know there's an issue but you can't get a resolution. Like I would make up an issue to pay for, that's dumb! they want you to take it to an authorize Nissan dealer but what good does that do when they can't find or fix the issue.

58 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2013

We purchased this 2009 Nissan Altima 5 months ago with 56000 miles on it and only drove it locally until 8/31/13 when we went on a five hour trip, 3 of which was on the interstate at 65 to 70 mph speeds. After about 2 hours of running these speeds non stop we were in the middle lane with heavy traffic coming up on a small incline the car lost power my speed instantly dropped to 40 mph, the tractor trailer following close behind had to go on lockdown to avoid plowing us over. I was floor boarding the car trying to maintain 40 mph until I could change lanes to pull over. It took about 10 miles before we could change lanes at this speed but in that time I realized after attempting to manually downshift for more power the cvt transmission was stuck in high and wouldn't let me downshift manually. After sitting on the road with no phone signal or help I decided to stumble to the nearest town but the transmission was again working by this time so we cautiously finished the last leg of our trip. With no local Nissan dealership at our destination I called my dealership who said they weren't aware of any issues like this but bring it in upon return. At our destination we again drove the car for three days short trips with no problems but on our return trip again two hours or so at interstate speeds im losing power and the transmission is stuck in high again so we pull over and let it set again before continuing our trip home. Soon as we arrived home I called the dealership and they kept it for three days and said no codes or problem could be found and they didn't have anyone to drive it at the speeds or distance the problem occurred to recreate it but suggested I pay them 275. 00 to change the fluid. After researching the web I discovered many other owners are having this issue its even videos on youtube. This Nissan is an interstate death trap that should be recalled.

59 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2013

We were driving on I 40 at a steady 75 mph and we had traveled about 50 miles at this speed when the car started to slow down even pressing the gas to the floor did not work. We slowed to 40 to 45 mph, the rest of the way home. Even after exiting the freeway the car acted like it had a lose of power and accelerated very slow. This is the second time this has happened both times I was a passenger and the first time I thought it was the transmission. It seemed to shift hard and the engine raved as well. Both times this happened on I 40, this is seriously dangerous and Nissan needs to recall these cars I have found much information about this very issue on this same model year.

60 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. While operating the vehicle at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stopped accelerating and the speed would reduce. The dealer diagnosed that the transmission was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 75,000.

61 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2013

My 2009 Nissan Altima would not crank. It was fine when I drove it to work. When I went to go home, it would not crank and a yellow light with a key came on. I have to get my car towed tomorrow because the power steering lock went out. I've noticed this is common with this year make and model. This is ridiculous, there needs to be a recall. I've read over 50 incidents just like mine this month alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

62 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2013

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the steering lock actuator failed, preventing the vehicle from being started. The contact had to have the vehicle towed to the dealer and the steering lock actuator was replaced. The failure and the current mileage was 60,000. Kmj.

63 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2012

I turn off my car to get gas and when I got back in my car it would not turn on I try to have a jump and that didn't work so I had my car tow to the dealership, I only had the car for 1 year. The dealer said I would need a new steering unit that will cost me 1300. 00. This is not the first time for these Nissan to have this issue and I feel a recall is needed. I feel like I been rip off by Nissan and my dealership.

64 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2012

Driving vechile at speed of 80 when all of a sudden car did not excelerate but gas petal went to the ground. Car started to loss power. Was able to pull to the side of highway which car stayed at 20 mph would not go any faster. I had car evaluated and mechanic said he could not find anything wrong but said he had seen this before in the high temperature.

65 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2012

I purchased a 2009 Nissan Altima 2 years ago and the vehicle has being nothing but problems since the beginning, on top of that the maintenance is very costly if you take it to the dealer. I take my car to ase certified mechanics at pep-boys and the labor is allot cheaper than dealer pricing, my car has always being maintained by the schedule maintenance according to the owners manual and recently I had my transmission service by the pep-boys and they sell by my standards better quality oil like valvoline cvt oil being that I saved some money through pep-boys they did the service and everything went well till recently my tranny, went out and hey blamed the oil wasn't the right color according to the Nissan tech, now I want to know how can valvoline sell a certified Nissan product to millions of consumers and they say it's not covered under the mfg, warranty.

66 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2011

The automatic transmission seemed to be binding at all speeds. The dealership examined it and advised the transmission would need to be replaced under warranty. They stated a replacement transmission would be available in 3 days. As of this point the replacement transmission is still not available. The vehicle is "ok to drive" per the dealer. But given the potential for vehicle failure a 2 month wait for a replacement transmission is not acceptable.

67 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

S10 appropriate handling- copy of a letter to Nissan re acceleration problems with his 2009 Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl the consumer stated when she merged onto a major highway, she applied the accelerator pedal, and soon discovered the vehicle was decreasing in speed, instead of increasing. The consumer stopped to a repair shop, but they were unable to find any problems. After approximately an hour and a half of driving at a constant speed of 60 mph, the acceleration problem returned. Going up hills, was extremely difficult and the top speed of going up a hill was 45 mph. The vehicle was towed to a dealer and the next day the consumer was informed they were unable to diagnose and fix the acceleration problem. The consumer continued to experience the same problems. The consumer took the vehicle to her local dealer, and they were unable to diagnose a problem as well.

68 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Have a 2009 Nissan Altima. Been having problems with it for a year now. Car keeps on jerking and stalling and would stop working while waiting at a stop sign. Last incident was Aug 15,2010. I was waiting at a stop signal on a hill and the car completely shut off on me, the car started to roll back. I had to hurry and put the car in park and restart the car. Everytime I go to the dealership they can't find what's wrong or they will tell me nothings wrong. This car is very dangerous and Nissan needs to figure out the problem.

69 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2008

A traffic officer and investigated an incident where a vehicle owner was rum over by his vehicle. The vehicle does not have a physical key to operate the vehicle. There is an electronic "key" and a push button start/shut off switch. The driver parked the vehicle in a driveway with a steep grade. The vehicle was left in "drive" with the engine off. The driver exited and started to walk away from the vehicle. The vehicle started to roll backwards, down the driveway. The driver ran to the vehicle to try to stop it and was run over by the vehicle. It is possible to park the vehicle, shut the engine off and exit the vehicle with the transmission any gear selection and exit the vehicle. This is the second incident with this same model vehicle, but different years, that the engine was shut off, the transmission was left in drive and the vehicle ran over the driver. In both instances the vehicle was owned by the driver for a short time.
