36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 05/12/2023

I was stopped at a light, in a long line of cars, my foot on the brake, a few feet away from the car in front of me, and the same in back. All of a sudden, the car started moving, accelerating, jerking forward. I was shocked, pushed down on the brake, nothing happened. Starting pulling the car out of line because I was going to hit the car in front of me. I was pumping the brake, and nothing happened. Clipped the car in front's rear left bumper, wrecked my front right bumper. Finally pulled into the turn lane and finally the brakes caught. It was like someone had taken a gizmo and turned on my car (like the onstar mess a few years ago. ). Nothing like this has ever happened to me, in any car, including this one, until 5/12 at 2:00 pm. It was terrifying.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2016 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/21/2022

We were driving the car on a highway (the 405 in los angeles) in the midafternoon on December 21. We were going uphill and in the flow of traffic. I'd say the speed was about 60-65. The car was functioning well. Then, the driver accelerated to pass a car and suddenly the car lost all power and went into neutral. Fortunately, we made our way to the freeway shoulder without an accident. But, it could have been very different, as we were on a fast-moving highway and there could have been a pile-up. The car had plenty of battery power (around 47 miles) but it would not shift back into drive. We turned the car on and off and it was stuck in neutral. A tow truck came by and suggested a jump start. That worked and we took the car immediately to a Nissan dealership. The dealership found an error code (I believe it's p3398 but I am unsure) and says that a part of the lithium battery is malfunctioning and the car is unsafe to drive. It is under warranty but they say they are unable to replace the battery for many months. I saw no warning lamps prior to the failure (apart from a recurring message about tire maintenance that we had addressed repeatedly). For what it is worth, I had just had the brake pads checked that morning at a local mechanic who said the brakes were in excellent shape.

The contact made a right turn safely and ran onto a curb to bring the vehicle to a stop. The contact drove safely to the destination. The warning lights disappeared. The failure recurred twice within two weeks with no warning light illuminated. The contact notified the manufacturer and was informed that a previous recall had been performed. The vehicle had been towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/19/2022

About January 19, 2022 when the temperature was about -10 degrees f I drove my 2019 Nissan Leaf about 5 miles. When I turned on the car the battery level was at 60%. After I had been driving for about ½ mile I got a dashboard message that the battery was cold and power would be reduced. I got a similar message a few days before which did not result in any difference in power levels, so I ignored the message. At about 3 miles I had to go up a 10% grade hill of about 1/4 mile in length. As soon as I started up the hill and was accelerating I got the power reduction message again. At that point I was traveling about 50mph. Then in the next 10 seconds, and while I was about half way up the hill, the battery indicator on the dashboard dropped all the way down to 1%. The car lost all of its power and I had to pull over to the side of the road. As soon as I stopped the battery indicator started to rise and within the next 30 seconds had returned to 60%. I continued up the hill, and noticed that the power was decreasing and the battery indicator was dropping again. I made it to the top of the hill and stopped again. The battery indicator returned to 60%. I had to stop one more time to allow the battery to recover, but made it to my destination without further problems. Two hours later I started for home and the car operated normally. Between that day and February 5 there have been no further incidents, even though early morning temperatures have ranged from -7 degrees to -28 degrees on 13 days. I took the car to freedom Nissan in south burlington, vt on Feb. 2. However, they told me that there was no record of such an incident on the computer and they would do nothing without such a record. To have the car go from full power to zero power in a 10 second period is a very disconcerting experience. It should have provoked an error message in the onboard computer. I think this is a safety problem and would like you to look into it.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/30/2019

A case#33557927 was reported to Nissan Leaf consumer relation and a car was taken to a dealership at long beach Nissan(phone #562-264-400) to report a batter that is not holding charge and recently the car begin to lurch forward. Nissan was able to reproduce the issue. Nissan corp should correct the battery and safety issue. So far, they have been professional and does not take any ownership to solve the problem. I request an email after the case was opened and they never send me the email. This issue involve safety and battery not holding charge. The battery is still under defective warranty. Nissan wants to put the vehicle on public road that is not safe. Nhtsa board would agreed with me that Nissan acted irresponsibly should they go forward with not fixing the batter and the car lurching forward issue.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/16/2012

About a month and a half ago, I purchased a 2011 Nissan Leaf from my local dealer. Everything was going great until about a month ago when I was driving on the highway around 20 mph or so when the power suddenly shut off. The entire dashboard instantly went off but the radio+touchscreen remained on. The car came to a crawl and I was able to pull over and restart without any problems. It was a little scary to say the least. I called the dealership where I bought the car from and left a voice mail for the service dept. Since it was Saturday but never received a call back. I kind of shrugged it off that day thinking it might have just been a quirk so I didn't follow up with the dealer. About a week and a half ago, I was pulling into a parking lot going around 10 mph and the same thing happened. I called the dealership and took it in the next day. They've had the car for about a week and said that Nissan told them to drive it and try reproducing the problem. I didn't expect them to reproduce it since it has only happened twice within weeks. As expected, they couldn't reproduce it so I was told that I would have to take the car back since they couldn't do anything about it. I am taking the Leaf back tomorrow to start driving again but definitely have concerns since my wife also drives the car and who knows what she would do in a shut-off while driving situation. Luckily, the past two incidents were not in high speeds and I was able to react quickly. My worst nightmare would be if we got rear ended due to instantly losing power. I have called Nissan directly to let them know about my car but no one has called me back. I assume they were already in touch with the dealer. I don't like the fact that I am being handed the car back at a potential safety risk.
