When in motion the transmission starts to slip in 1 and 2 gear then 4 and 5 gear jumps out of gear then goes in to limp mode.
I took my car in for an inspection, found out that the floor on the passenger side had rusted from the inside out and there was a good size hole. It cost me a couple hundred to fix because it wouldn't pass the inspection. The next thing was the slack timing chain, the car sounds like a truck. I've been told it would cost up to $3000 to fix. Then the biggest safety issue is the transmission, this one is really concerning. The jerking, bucking, kicking, clanging, the seconds of hesitation between drive and reverse and then suddenly it engages and the kick could give you whiplash. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a rodeo. When the car sits for awhile (overnight) there is no issue with the initial start but once it warms up that's it. You can't accelerate properly once the car slows down, or is making a turn, going around a bend or comes to a stop because it drops out of gear, then there is the hesitation and at that point it just revs, this happens 2 or 3 times before it engages again then there is a massive bang and the car lunges forward, by then the traffic is right under your rear bumper. After this happens a few times there is no more acceleration, the pedal has to be pushed to the floor for the car to move. The engine light came on a month or two ago and hasn't gone off. This is a real dangerous, safety issue. A few days ago another issue appeared, I cannot open the driver side door with the remote door opener or the electronic door opener on the inside of the door. At this point I've read many complaints about these issues, they are all manufacture problems but the timing chain and transmission is the biggest when it comes to safety because you do not know when the car will stop. Why hasn't Nissan done a recall????? there are enough complaints.
Original owner 2004 Maxima se 3. 5 transmission shifts in jerking motion problem affecting 3rd gear. Hard jerks as trans. Downshifts engine revs-up while trying to upshift out of 2nd gear.
The transmission shifts out of gear and pops back in at will, I've had it looked at by a mechanic who sees no physical signs of undue wear. He cleaned filter and put in Nissan transmission fluid to no avail. I fear this defect will happen at an inopportune time and get me or my family injured or worse. Hundreds of similar complaints exist about this car model and years 2004-2006. The transmission also shifts very roughly in lower gears, even when I expect a bad shift I can't tell when it will happen. This occurs during speeds of 0 to 60. I've read numerous reports of multiple transmission failures after Nissan replaced the original. This is a faulty piece of manufacturing. Nissan needs to replace this transmission with a different type or re-engineer the existing one.
Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While the contact was driving 40 mph, the transmission began to slip out of gear with severe hesitation in a jerking motion. The failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken was taken to an authorized dealer who informed there was a faulty transmission. The manufacturer was made aware of the defect and they refused to accept liability for the replacement of the transmission. The failure mileage was 87,000. Js.
I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima 3. 5 se with 74,000 miles, and for the past couple of weeks the transmission has begun slipping and jerking from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to3rd. But the biggest problem has happened twice now; where the car has been sitting idle at a stop light, the transmission has slipped out of 1st gear, and when the light turned green the car would not rev up and I was stuck holding up traffic until I put the car in park, was able to obtain rpms and then put the car back in drive.
Nissan Maxima 2004 3. 5 around 82000 miles the transmission began to jump into and out off gear. Im at 95000 miles and the problem is worse. It slipps out of gear easier causing the car to slow down, had close reaer ended accidents, fortunately the cars behind me were paying attention. This problems happens when the car is at operating tempature. I switch from automatic to standard and the problem continues to jump into and out of gear. Several times it has gotten stuck in 5th gear. Had it towed once already for the same cause. 3 mechanics told me it was a problem with the valves in the transmission, estimates of $2000 to $3500 to fix. All have said that this is a known problem with this make, model and year of car. Rpm shoots up past 7000 on some gear changes only to slip back out of gear. I can not accelerate properly when merging onto freeways because of this problem. Check this web page. . . . . Read more...
2004 Nissan Maxima has serious transmission problems only has 57000 miles. The consumer stated the transmission would jump out of gear. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership and was told the transmission needed to be replaced. Updated 03/29/10.
I have 2004 Nissan Maxima. I am experiencing shifting problems. It seems to slip out of gear on 3rd. Or experience extreme hesitation when going to 3rd. Seems not to securely sit in gear. Then intermittently, when reversing. Car hesitates 3-5 sec to shift into drive. Then once it does. It drops very hard into gear.
I purchased a Nissan Maxima with approx 90,000 miles in June 2007. I purchased an extended warranty, however after less than a year the transmission was slipping very bad. It needed to be replaced, so the warranty only provided a transmission with equal value at the date of purchase, so they installed a 90,000 mile transmission, this transmission is now slipping out of gear bad. I think their should be a recall because I have read a ton of complaints online about this same issue.
2004 Nissan Maxima se has 58,000. Transmissions jerks, car falls out of gear while driving. I took it to the dealer 2 months ago, they said transmission fluid and flush cost $400. 00 it didn't fix the problem, I took it in again 2 days ago. They said $4800 for a new transmission!! note: I have an extended warranty so the $4800 is covered but I am out $400 for the flush plus $50. 00 deductible. Additionally, I have done web searches on this car and problem. This problem is happening to a lot of people. Please not that my car slipped out of gear on the expressway so this is a very dangerous problem!!.
The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, the contact tried to accelerate but the vehicle would not shift out of first gear. The contact coasted to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. When the vehicle was restarted and shifted from first to second gear, the vehicle jerked. The failure occurred when the vehicle was running hot. A local mechanic inspected and stated that the shift had malfunctioned, the transmission needed to be rebuilt and the valve body needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the approximate current mileage was 81,000.
Been having numerous transmissions issues with the car over the past 2 to 3 years. Already to had to replace the transmission once, now starting to have the same issues again. Lots of jerking from gear to gear, lots of difficulty getting the car to up shift or down shift; car locking in 4th or 5th gear and will not shift out of that gear. Can not believe there has not been a recall based on the number of internet complaints on this issue.
I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with a little over 90,000 miles. It is come to my attention that my vehicle is not the only 2004 Nissan Maxima with this problem. It slips out of gear and makes the vehicle jump as if someone rear ended me. It shifts really hard from !st to 2nd even 3rd when I drive throughout the city. It does it only when the car warms up and it does it consistently. I've done a transmission flush which was required by the dealership and it stopped doing it for about 5 miles into the ride, then it began doing it. I went online and found thousands and thousands of people with the same vehicle and with the same problem. They all have done all the transmission repairs possible and the problem still maintains. I refuse to spend $4,000. 00 on a new transmission because I do not have that money. These transmissions need to be recalled.
The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Approximately one year after purchasing the vehicle in 2007, the vehicle began jumping out of gear unexpectedly. The contact feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive because it automatically changes gears during braking and accelerating. Through research, he discovered other vehicles with the same failure and feels that a recall should be issued. The dealer was aware of the failure and stated that it was related to the transmission. The vehicle has not been repaired; however, the repair would cost $5,000. The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 98,000.
