Failure Date: 10/19/2018

My 2003 Murano se/sl aawhen I first start the engine it makes a sound like it has no oil or engine is choking but its starts but if engine is idling for 5 mins or so its shut off but I can start it again but after when im driving engine just dies off amd wont start again for about 5 mins. That problems has been going on constantly when im on the road with my children or by myself last week I was driving my son to school and I was waiting to turn left and once I was turning my Murano died off in the middle of the road luckily the on coming traffic had a red light so I had a chance to push it of the intersection, one other time I was picking up dinner amd engine just died off on me while I was making a right turn and gear couldnt be released of drive and key wouldn't turn either some how while I was jerking the key I was able to shift to park and key was released that time I was lucky another vehicle stopped next to me and turn their emergency hazard light because my car seemed like the vehicle wasnt responding at all not even jump starting worked and after 20 25 mims it just started againg . Ive already fixed the faulty code but it still does it and now the cam and crank shaft codes appeared.

4 Power Train problem

I recently purchashed a 2003 Nissan Murano for my wife and kid I feel like I put my familys life in risk buying this car tried several times to fix it but know out of funds to continue trowing my money away the car loses power in traffic on hills it is so dangerous we where involed in 2 near misses when trying to change lanes it loss power after hours of research I am not alone with this issue several othe people have my same type of problem I dont want to sell this car because I am not the type of person that will put somebody else life in danger so pleasee aking for youre help dont know what esle.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The problem with my Nissan Murano like so many others is the transmission. I took it to the dealer and I wasted $125 dollars. I also contacted Nissan cooperate and they have not did anything. Nissan knows this is a manufactory problem and they will not acknowledge the problem. I am so frustrated with this problem I seen that they extended the warranty but I am 20,000 miles over it I need help.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano with 88,000 miles. The car for the most part has been reliable. Recently it was diagnosed with a bad cvt transmission. Nissan said it is to old to be considered for warranty repaired, I have noticed on various websites that this vehicle has numerous complaints regarding this cvt transmission. Despite a warranty extension by Nissan to address this problem, it seems that this problem occurs after the vehicle has exceeded any warranty consideration. This is a significant safety issue and I feel that Nissan should be held responsible for correcting this problem on all affected vehicles; this should include free transmission fluid changes they claim may cause cvt failures. At this point I would not recommend the purchase of Nissan products until they live up to their responsibility. If the government can make gm, Chrysler and Ford recall that are over ten-years old ; why can't they require Nissan to do the same thing?.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2014

The rear suspension member link which holds the suspension to the car rotted off and caused the suspension to fail. The remaining metal is severely rooted or perforated. There are several 2003 Muranos on the road. Mine is always garaged and I have kept it well maintained since new. Nissanusa was called and they will do nothing to fix or pay to fix the problem. I surely would think this car could go for several more years before any problems with it. The entire car has no rust anywhere on it, so why did the rear suspension fail? I am wondering if in the early 2000's if this metal that was used was some of the batch that made them recall and replace a large number of pickup trucks too. I am wondering how many other Murano's have this problem or will. This is surely a safety issue for anyone who is driving a vehicle like this. . Please help.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2014

Coming off exit ramp, stopped and turned left, was going around 25 mph when the car surged forward, accelerated, rpm shot up. I had to slam on the brakes and put the car into neutral. The car then slowed and began driving normally. A week later, my wife and I were on the interstate going around 60 mph when the car slowed down as though it was put into a low gear. We could only get it to go no more that 35 mph. We pulled off on the shoulder and parked. The car would not start again. Had to tow it. About a month later, I was on the interstate going around 65 when the same thing happened as before, it went into a lower gear, lowering my speed to around 30 mph which caused me to almost get hit from behind. Had it been a large truck it most likely would have hit me. I put it in neutral and pulled off to the shoulder. When I pulled out again, it drove at a normal rate of speed. I've taken it to the Nissan dealership and they claimed they couldn't find anything wrong. The internet is full of complaints from Murano owners with the same problems and stating that local Nissan dealerships cannot find the problem and if they do anything, they change out the transmission at a cost to the owner. I just purchased my Murano a few months ago in September of 2014 from a small lot. This is very frustrating for me and my family. Twice we could have very easily been hit from behind. Since this is a problem that's been going on since the first 2003 Muranos, I feel Nissan should order a recall and fix this safety issue before someone is killed.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

I just purchased this vehicle on 7/15/14, drove it home and it would not start 7/16/14. I was able to get the vehicle started, but the service engine soon light came on and it shut off 2 more times while parked. I was finally able to get it started and running to go about my errands. I stopped to pick someone up from the hospital and it started up, but immediately shut off again. Eventually, it started bucking and shuddering while I was driving and seemed as if it was going to shut off. I was able to get it to the dealer I purchased it from and he is taking responsibility of getting it serviced. The diagnosis was the rear cam position sensor went bad. I called haldemann Nissan in hamilton, NJ to inquire about recalls, as I knew this was a recall issue and was told that my VIN number had no recalls.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2014

While driving on the interstate the vehicle lost acceleration completely. . It had to be re-started in order to continue driving. Once in ,option again, the engine was idling extremely high and continued that way until the vehicle was turned off and sat for over an hour. Started.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2014

I was hearing some really loud noises while accelerating in the last couple of days prior to the "stalling/no acceleration" issue that I experienced on April 9, 2014. I was driving on a busy expressway in rush hour traffic and the vehicle wouldn't accelerate or would hesitate for 5 seconds or so and then it would "kick" in, albeit slowly. The car is at the dealership right now.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2013

My wife and I were traveling 55 miles an hour when the transmission stopped working in our 2003 Nissan Murano, jerking the car (and us), and leaving the vehicle paralyzed in night traffic in the fast lane. Several cars nearly hit us until we could safely steer the car to the shoulder. We were obviously scared to death and hurt from the abrupt stop. The vehicle would then only carry us about 1 mile an hour along the shoulder until we could get to safety. This vehicle only has 80,100 miles on the odometer (over a 10 year period. ) it is very well cared for and maintained. We took it to the Nissan dealer (woodmen Nissan of colorado springs) for repair, and are now told it needs a new transmission. They will charge us $3,600 plus tax for a rebuilt transmission. Nissan motor company, ltd is aware that it put defective transmissions in this model year, because it later extended its power train warranty (after consumer complaints) for this model to 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever came first. Again, my vehicle has only 80,000 and just went over the 10 year mark. This product is unacceptable and nearly cost me and my wife our lives. Nissan's mistake is also now potentially costing us thousands of dollars to fix. I want Nissan to take care of this defect by replacing the transmission in our car. I have contacted it's customer care center and am now waiting for a response. It is solely Nissan's fault. , and it's responsibility to repair. I have informed millions as a news anchor across the country over the past 18 years ,and I now work as a free-lance journalist with two national news networks, I will share Nissan's response to my request with every living person in my sphere of influence through every avenue of broadcast and social media I possibly can. We will see if a company that put it's customers in defective, dangerous vehicles will do the right thing.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2013

I was driving down a hill road, I decided to turn back, I performed a legal u turn and when I tried to reverse the accelerator would not perform its duty. I was going downhill and hit the dirt curb and almost went off the cliff if I had not pressed the emergency breaks. This is not the only incident. As I go on the freeway I am not able to accelerate from time to time becasue the step motor cannot perform its duty in making sure gears switch at a propper time. I went to a transmission expert and was told it was the step motor which affects the transmission. This part is in charge in making sure gears switch properly. I went online and I have seen that many people have issues with this same problem. I called a Nissan dealership and was told that since I had passed the 120k milage mark they could no longer service my transmission within the warranty limits. This means I will have to pay out of pocket $2,140. 00 for a new transmission not including labor.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2012

Pulled off interstate because transmission was not acting correctly. When I pulled of the interstate at the stop sign, I tried to apply the accelerator and car would not move. I was almost hit in the rear. Finally able to get car to parking lot. Had car towed to Nissan dealer for repair. Waiting on call for cost of repairs.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate from stops. The vehicle rapidly jerked forward when it finally began to accelerate. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 135,000. The VIN was unavailable.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2012

From a stopped position when accelerating vehicle doesn't move for a few seconds then engages and jolts forward. Been happening for about a year now. All fluids are regularly replaced and maintained on schedule. No idea what to do, it is a known problem so trade in value is very low. Not worth putting in a lot of money to repair as the vehicle is 10 yrs old now and 124500 miles. Toyota stepped up with their vehicles problems with trade in incentives or recalls why won't Nissan?.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2011

The cvt transmission in my Murano went out. It seems a shame Nissan won't stand by a new technology that obviously does't work very well. It is going to cost me over $5,000 to fix.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

My Nissan Murano was a brand new 2003 it is now 8 years old with 46015 miles. The Nissan service department in nh cared for my vehicle regularly; my first problem occurred when the engine started sending out black smoke, I fought for Nissan to take responsibility for what was happening to my vehicle, they did; it took six to eight weeks to get the oil smell flushed out of the air conditioner. I understand wear and tear but, major engine faults happening so soon; Nissan claims being the top vehicle manufactures. One of the many reasons I bought their brand. I did everything they said to keep my vehicle functioning; then it happened again; the rear powertrain reached its end, and oil leaking in the engine, the piston ball bearings is broken; and now the oil is leaking out. The average miles driven per year is 12000; my vehicle average 1500-miles yearly. I cannot nor will I battle over the 60 months/100,000 miles warranty contract; I am appealing to Nissan corporation saying, look and see in my case my vehicles? problems are unique; see the oddness of an engine with only 46015 miles having such major problems. See my maintenance records, it was not due to neglect, look at the first time I had a major problem with this engine very early in the first two years of owning it. The engine and components are faulty; I just got a bad make. A feedback card came in my mail it says, ?as a valued Nissan customer, your satisfaction throughout your ownership experience is our company?s highest priority?? so, then why hide behind the expired warranty? I was told, even if the NHTSA force a recall and Nissan found I am the cause, the Nissan board would willfully recall vehicles from 2004 up, to spite me or, single out the specific problems I now have repair them ignoring the vehicle?s young engine is completely faulty.

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2011

Vehicle hesitates and does a bunny hop randomly during stop and go traffic. Vehicle won't move at all you can have it floored, than all of a sudden it takes off. Took it to Nissan, they keep telling me its the transmission, which makes no sense since it only does it once in awhile. I finally decided to file a complaint because I was driving home the other day slowed down to get on interstate and car wouldn't go. . . Almost got side swiped by a tractor trailer and rear ended by the guy behind me who assumed I was going. I have done some research, it does not seem like anyone really knows the cause and I am very perplexed as to the number of people having this issue yet no recall. . . I guess someone will have to die for this issue to be taken seriously, usually how things get done in the us.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2011

I was driving on the highway at 50mph and all of a sudden Murano lost acceleration, gas pedal wasn't working at all. Some how I pulled over and turn ignition off and back on and it worked fine. Now when is a stop and go situation it does the same thing won't accelerate until like 5 seconds later and in a very dangerous way. I heard lots of people having the same problems and it's life treatning situation.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2011

Second owner, purchased with 63000 miles. First occurrence was driving on the highway a short distance (45min) started to notice the speed pulsing on flat stretches of road with the cruise control being set at 60 mph. I would manually take over the gas pedal just to have to constantly give it more gas then less gas to maintain 60 on flat ground. To the point of nailing it to maintain 60 then out of no where it would start to go accelerate suddenly up and I would let off the gas to stay @ 60mph and hold the pedal there for about 20 secs just to lose power on flat ground again and would just repeat over and over. When I got off the exit ramp it was sputtering really bad and had a hard time just getting it home w/o hurting myself or others. Next day nothing. Then over time (1 month) it happened 4 other times but is seeming to get worse. Then today I stopped in town at a red light. When it came time to go the care jus sat there and the rpm gauge moved up but the car didn't move forward. I immediately put on hazards, put car in park, shut it off, then restarted it to luckily be able to pull off. Went on highway home going 60mph and the surging back and forth with power to weakness to sudden power was the worst its ever been. Car isn't under warranty due to being 2nd owner but come on Nissan really? I'm a student/new father and the $ is crunched like most families now in this economy. I bought a Nissan b/c its reputation of quality and endurance/resillience. I would be sick if this injured my baby b/c this car wasn't in the "original recall range". It is very dangerous and could lead to both my tires locking up on the highway going 60 or even faster leaving not only us in jepoardy but everyone around me on the road also.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate from a stop. Once the vehicle began to accelerate, it accelerated at a very slow rate of speed. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2011

I have a recurring problem that when I am in traffic and I put my foot on the gas pedal, there is no response and then the car surges forward. I was changing lanes and almost caused an accident. The next day I brought to the dealer and they said it was the valve body and gasket. They said the extended 120,000 warranty on the cvt transmisson would not cover the repair. I called Nissan customer support, and after investigating they agreed the repair would not be covered under the warranty. I have heard so many complaints that this did not fix the problem that I just had the transmission replaced. I was too worried about the safety hazard. This is a very serious problem , that should not happen at this mileage. I also have had to have the catalytic converter replaced and also the fuel pump, just after it turned 100,000.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2011

Upon normal acceleration from a stop sign onto a major road with a 35 mph speed limit, there was a loud "pop" and the car lost power and could only move at a slow crawl to the shoulder of the road. The car could rev, but very little power was getting to the wheels. There was a small oil spill under the rear axle of the car. The car had to be towed to our mechanic (we did not take it to a Nissan dealer because we thought the car was out of warranty) and the police demanded speedy dry to be put down to cover the small oil spill, which cost 45 dollars and was not covered by insurance. The mechanic determined that the continuously variable transmission (cvt) and its casing needed to be replaced, at a cost of $4922. After doing some research online, we learned that Nissan automatically extended the warranty from 5 years or 60,000 miles to 10 years and 120,000 miles, however, we received no notification from Nissan that the warranty was extended, nor did we hear from them that cvt failure was common amongst this model year, as is apparent from the numerous complaints similar to ours. We performed all scheduled maintenance on the car, including replacing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. We have reached out to Nissan to see if they will reimburse us for the repair costs as part of their extended warranty and we are waiting to hear back from them.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that the vehicle would lose acceleration power while sitting in traffic. The failure was experienced numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a diagnostic was performed, which located the failure in the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 87,000 and the current was 111,400.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2010

While driving my 2003 Nissan Murano awd sl I suddenly loose acceleration, the engine will not rev and the rpm indicator is 0, the engine is still running, there are no warning light indicators. After several minutes the accelerator will re-engage and the car will accelerate again. This has happened 5 times in the last 2 weeks, took the car to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong, no codes issued. I have replaced in the past 3 years the transmission in the last 7 months the fuel pump, the catalytic converter, the O2 sensors have all been replaced. The dealer indicated that this not a problem they have been aware of and have no idea what it could be. . . Sound like they are not being exactly forthcoming on this issue.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

After driving a while in stop & go traffic the vehicle hesitates and doesn't accelerate when you depress the gas pedal. Then after a few seconds the engine revs up and the vehicle lurches forward and sometimes stalls in traffic. Once the vehicle stalls, it takes a long time before you can restart the engine. This situation happens almost every time I'm in heavy traffic, which is especially dangerous on the freeways and when making left turns at intersections. I've worked with my local Nissan dealership but they haven't come up with a solution, and it's becoming very expensive for me to have them research the problem and not find a fix.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

After extended idle, the vehicle becomes unresponsive to fuel feed. When the gas pedal is depressed there is a hesitation (2-5 seconds) and then suddenly the vehicle will lurch forward. The problem temporarily goes away when the car is shut off for a few minutes.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

Car: 2003 Nissan Murano sl awd summary: catastrophic loss of power / stalling during driving details: there are multiple issues - all reported to Nissan - which promptly declined to do anything to address them since the car was out of warranty. However it's clear that several other 2003 Nissan Murano owners are reporting the "catastrophic" stall problem - a simple google search bears this out. To me it seems that Nissan is washing its hands off the problem. Here are some symptoms: 1) when driving on the freeway a couple of days ago, the car catastrophically lost power for several seconds - only to somewhat recover thereafter. At the time of recovery manylights on the dashboard lit up including "check engine" "awd lock / slip" etc. This incident happened three times in a row - and I called Nissan for help. 2) I live in san francisco. When waiting at a stop sign to cross uphill, the car simply does not respond when I press on the gas pedal and starts rolling downhill instead. 3) similarly in stop and go situations - the car simply does not respond to the gas pedal - and then when it finally does lurches forward in a dangerous, out-of-control fashion increasing the chances of rear-ending the car ahead.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

February 2010 I was driving my 2003 Murano down the highway and all of a sudden as I was pushing the gas pedal and it wasn't responding properly began to hesitate but I was able to drive it to the Nissan dealer for repair and I was told it was a sensor malfunction so it was replaced (at my expense $1100). Then in April 2010 driving down the street I heard a thump and as I pushed the gas and then the car began to drag and hesitate. I made it safely to a bank parking lot where I called a tow truck to tow it to the Nissan dealer again. This time they say it was some sensor that dealt with the throttle and a case. Again at my expense ($3200). So in 2 months I spent $4500 and at that time I was told I should be ok. Well it is now April 2011 and I have the same problem again and this time it stopped while I was driving home from work. Now I had it towed to my house which iss were it sits because I was told sine I went more than 12k miles it is out of warranty. So I now have a car that is useless unless I spend another $4500 to fix it. Unexceptable!!!!!!! I am lucky I was not injured but this needs to be looked at soon or someone can be seriously injured.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

1: after driving the car for along period of time in stop and go traffic or on the thruway. Then coming to a complete stop and pressing the gas the car will crawl forward as if you were not pressing down the gas pedal after 1-3 sec of the car crawling into the middle of a intersect and no way to get it out of the intersect when other cars are coming down at 40mph into the intersection; will be disastrous and potentially cause a lost of life. After 1-3 sec the transmission will finally engage. The funny part is when you turn the car off and restart it the problem clears it self until it problem recurs. After reading other stories of there's cvt transmission in the Murano doing the same thing to the other Murano customer. I decided to take it to the dealer 2: this is a sporadic event and every time I took it to the dealer to get it check they could not duplicate the problem on March 9th and told me the transmission performed normal and it was engine [misfiring and slightly burning oil and compression lost related not transmission [I have enough automotive skill to tell me that this is definitely not a misfire/slightly burning oil/compression lost because once you turn the car off and turn it back on the problem disappears, witha engine misfire it would still persist, the engine is 100% running without any problem until this problem arise: so yesterday, when it started happening to my wife on her drive, I advise her to stop immediately at the dealer to have them take a look at I, to my surprise they refused!!! to take a 2nd look at it as they advise me they already diagnostic it as a engine problem and will not. I called them and demanded that a service tech, test drive it and he said nope this is a engine problem and told my wife to tell me that im making all the service department mad?!. I took it to 2 other transmission place and they verified that this is 100% indeed a transmission problem.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

2003 Nissan Murano fails to accelerate intermittently. This has been random for the past few years. Never know when it will occur but never when taken to dealer.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. The engine continued running and there was an abnormal increase in engine rpms. The contact stated the vehicle would not accelerate past 20 mph. The contact was able to shut the engine off and when restarting, the vehicle resumed normal operation. Later, while merging onto a busy highway at an unknown speed, the failure recurred. The contact stated the failure would occur intermittently without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice yet the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure each time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000 and the current mileage was approximately 80,000.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2009

In stop and go city traffic, after a while of driving when you idle you step on the gas and nothing then after 5-7 seconds it propels forward without control. Late one night is almost cost me my life as I stopped at a stop sign when I depressed the gas it crawled to the middle of the intersection and just stopped for a few seconds a car was coming and almost hit my wife on passenger side. Please this issue should be addressed. I've done research and it seems many people are having the same problem with this make. I am the original owner, and I only have 68000 miles on my car. = a car I paid over 36k for.
