1 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that the vehicle failed a state safety inspection due to brake pedal being depressed to the floor board without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the brake master cylinder was replaced however, the vehicle failed a second inspection. The contact was informed by the inspector that the vehicle was subjected to NHTSA campaign number: 18v916000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was taken to hall Nissan virginia beach (3757 bonney rd, virginia beach, va 23452) and repaired however, the failure persisted. The contact was informed that the brake booster and brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

2 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

After having soft brake issue, had car checked and put on new front brakes. No change. Was informed by Nissan of my abs actuator involving master cylinder. I carry grand children in my vehicle all the time. Was warned not to travel long distances with this issue. I cannot afford to get this issue taken care of on my own and heard about the federal investigation regarding 2009 Nissan Murano's into this matter by the NHTSA. I am a grandmother extremely concerned about this issue.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

The brake pedal falls to the floor when depressed rapidly. This is only occasionally, however when it happened last. I stopped the vehicle and tapped the abs brake actuator unit with a rubber mallet and brakes were fine. . I believe the abs valve is defective but the dealer said that the master cylinder is defective & needs to replaced for $800+. They also said if that doesn't cure it, then the brake vacuum booster is also defective and it would cost me $3000! so, they were unable to perform the recall that changes the brake fluid from dot3 to dot 4.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2018

2009 Nissan Murano, the brakes goes soft and all the way to the floor but does not stop at all! we had multiple close calls. The brake pads were replaced twice, bled few times; got the master cylinder checked; multiple times by different mechanics. The dealership said that there was nothing wrong first time. Last time they did a brake fluid flush and bled. That didn't fix the problem. My old mechanic pointed me to online multiple complaints regarding the same exact issue. Contacted Nissan today and they denied knowing anything about this issue. There will be major fatality that will happen soon with over 120k of these 2009 models being actively driven in the us.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2018

While driving downtown, suddenly the brake pedal was ineffective except when pressed all the way to the floor. Only an emergency maneuver avoided an accident. The car was taken immediately to the dealer, who identified loss of pressure in the brake system, first replacing the master cylinder without improvement, then diagnosing issues with abs. Carcomplaints. Com and other websites list this as an item under government investigation for 2009 Muranos. The car is at approximately 65,000 miles. Attached is the initial diagnostics from the dealer. Subsequent to master brake cylinder replacement, dealer asserted that was not the problem and are now working on abs.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2018

On 02/07/2018 I was driving and hit a bump in the road as approaching a stop sign. Brakes were immediately malfunctioning & petal went to floor. I pumped brakes several times to stop. Drove vehicle home and parked. 03/16/2018 drove to local sears (about 1 1/2 miles). Had vehicle serviced and master cylinder replaced in addition to bleeding brakes several times, but problem with brakes was not resolved. Was advised to take to dealer because abs wasn't working properly. Very dangerous!!! it appears many has had similar problems & NHTSA is currently investigating. It also appears to be a pretty costly repair.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

Brake pedal goes all the way down and vehicle does not stop. I notice online that a lot of customers are having the same problem with this year and vehicle model. I have read how they had to spend a lot of money on parts and labor because the mechanics couldn't figure out the problem, so they started during power of elimination. I had my mechanic try to find out what was wrong and he tried replacing master cylinder which cost me several hundreds of dollars and the problem remained. I then took it to Nissan dealership and they said it was the abs hydraulic control unit which would cost me $3000 dollars parts and labor, the part a lone cost $1900 dollars. During my investigation many many people are having the same problem and it is said that a recall may be being looked at. Consumers are getting in to car accidents because of this faulty brake system and it seems that no one will address until someone dies. There are no warning lights on the abs system nor does the dealership knows why this is happening. To charge this much for a part is totally ridiculous!!! feel free to call me at anytime for more details on this issue 720-269-9015 john clark denver colorado consumer. I may take further actions if this issue is not address, at the end of the day it should be safety first!!! not making quotas and paying investors.

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

In December 2017, while driving down the road and making a left turn, the brakes went soft and all of the way to the floor. The master cylinder was replaced shortly thereafter. All of the brake lines were bled. Four months later, the brakes went soft again and all of the way to the floor. After pumping them about 10 times, they return to normal. The master cylinder was replaced a second time. So far, the brakes have been working but afraid this will happen again without warning. I do not feel safe driving this car any longer.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2017

I have had 3 brake issues in less than 2 weeks. My vehicle has 74,000 miles on it and is maintained per manufacturer recommendations. Brake pads and rotors are a year old and passed inspection. The first occurrence I was driving 35 mph and hit a manhole cover. The brakes went spongy and went to the floor. I pumped the brakes a few times and they returned. The second occurrence I was driving around 40 mph and coming around a curve and the same thing happened. The third time it was snowy and very slick. Upon braking on a turn, the abs engaged and I lost all brakes again. These experiences were very scary as I had not control over my vehicle. I use this to transport my grandchildren and the fact that I can loose control over the ability to stop my vehicle intermittently is very alarming. The dealer replaced the master cylinder (with no documented failure). The second occurrence happened less than 5 days later and I brought it back to the dealer where they replaced the abs hydraulic control unit, which cost $3000 for parts and labor! this needs to be recalled as it is dangerous. I have lost faith in Nissan as they have not addressed this issue!.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2017

Brakes go to the floor before engaging. Driving on normal paved road when a vehicle pulled out in front of us, abs engaged and now we have no brakes until touching the floor. Went to Nissan for service and they say it is the abs that needs replacing, 2800. 00. We just had new brakes on the back less than 2 months ago. They say due to numerous complaints on Nissan forums that they believe it is an issue with the abs malfunctioning and not simply replacing the master cylinder as many people have replaced this part first only to need the abs replaced. We tried pumping and hoping for a reset but nothing has helped. Nissan needs to do a recall before a life is lost due to this known issue. We are the one owner of this vehicle, 2009 with less than 65,000 miles on the car. No issues leading up to this nor any indicator lights going off. . I know our safety is priceless but if us folks are doing the right thing and getting these repairs done, then a recall goes into affect, I would like to see some sort of reimbursement. . . . .

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

Brakes went to floor. As I came to a stop light almost hit car in front of me. Originally diagnosed as a bad master cylinder. No warning lights at all. Changed master cylinder and problem was not fixed. Dealership diagnosed it as a bad abs actuator. Was told they would gladly fix it for 2200. 00. Looks like I am not the only one who is having the same problem. Have been told bt local mechanics they see this problem all of the time and Nissan has done nothing about it. Recall needs to be done ASAP.

12 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2017

I was driving home from work, travelling at a speed of roughly 35mph. I went over a small bump in the road and went to apply brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. I was able to get off the road without incident. The dealership said I needed a new master cylinder. I replaced it. A week later driving my children to school I was stopping normally when again the brake pedal went to the floor. Now the dealership states their "best guess" to repair is to replace the abs actuator. There is no guarantee this will repair the problem. This was escalated to the level of the Nissan engineer because the dealership (jeff schmitt Nissan in beavercreek, ohio) which is a certified Nissan dealer could not diagnose the problem internally.

13 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2017

Brake pedal suddenly got soft and went to the floor as I exited the highway almost causing a rear end collision. Master cylinder was replaced but brakes remain the same with brake pedal going to the floor. After researching on line it appears that the abs control module is to blame but no recall has been issued by Nissan !.

14 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact had to pump the brake pedal numerous times as it traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who replaced the brake master cylinder. In addition, the air bag indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the occupant sensor unit failed. The vehicle was also taken to a dealer (tony Nissan, 94-1299 ka uka blvd, waipahu, hi 96797, (808) 680-7150) for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 08v521000 (air bags, electrical system) and 08v066000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2017

On 11/15/17 the brake pedal went to the floor on our 2009 Nissan Murano when stopping at an intersection. It was raining at the time. The brakes continued to go to the floor when attempting to stop multiple times for about 2 miles. Turned car off and back on with same result. Towed to our local mechanics who found nothing wrong mechanically but found codes in the abs system. Brake pedal returned to normal function on its own. Mechanics left codes and recommended to take to Nissan dealership. Took to dealership 11/27/17. Dealership stated that the only codes found in abs system were old and did not indicate brake problem. No defects found. Dealership recommended to bring back if it happens again. Problem occurred again, this time in our driveway with snow. Towed the Murano to the dealership on 12/13/17. Description from dealership read, "found brake pedal very soft and low. No leaks found in brake system, no codes found in abs ecu. Brake pressure does not pump up. No air in system and back of master cylinder is dry. Brake booster passes all testing, also pedal is low when car is off, so booster not fault. Internal hydraulic pressure failure in either the master cylinder or abs actuator. Cannot test either component separate. No bulletins, but many reports in database search of abs actuator/s causing this exact problem. " cost $2,481. 53 to replace actuator. Just picked up today and will be very cautious with vehicle having lost confidence in it. It is very concerning that there was nothing to indicate a problem (no alarms, lights, warnings) before this issue occurred both times.

16 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

As I approached a stop, wanting to make a turn , there was a light patch of ice. I applied the brakes normally & pedal sunk to the floor & I almost crashed, luckily there were no other cars in my path. This is a huge safety issue. I am a commercial truck driver & had never heard of losing brakes to this issue before. I properly maintain my cars. Took my 09 Murano to a mechanic. & told me it was most likely the abs module $2000 just the part ,or the master brake cylinder $150 just the part. Replaced the master cylinder. & still not fixed . Problem was the abs module. Nissan needs to do a recall before someone is injured or killed do to this. Even though the main focus is sadly on quarterly numbers gains/losses. I had reached out to Nissan & didnt hear back from them. Guess it wouldve been different if I had said I was looking to buy a car.

17 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

I was driving on a highway at about 55 mph and a deer ran in front of my car. I hit the brakes hard but couldn't stop in time (the deer died) and when I did finally did achieve a stop I noticed my brakes went all the way to the floor. They were very spongy and took a huge distance to stop the car the rest of the drive home, even at speeds under 35 mph. I thought maybe the collision caused damage to my brakes somehow. A mechanic bled my brakes and restored functionality, and carefully inspected everything but could not find any damage. A few weeks later it snowed and when my car slid on some ice while braking into a turn, the brake pedal went to the floor again. I had the brakes bled again and the vehicle thoroughly inspected but again they found nothing. They recommended replacing the master cylinder. Before I could get that work done, another snow caused slippery roads which again caused my brakes to go spongy when braking on a patch of ice. My mechanic recommended I contact Nissan and during my research I found hundreds of complaints for 2009 Nissan Muranos with similar conditions and recommendations to replace the abs hcu (average cost, $2500). Two different Nissan dealers and their corporate reps say they know nothing of the pending NHTSA investigation on this problem.

18 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2017

Brakes will go all the way to the floor and at times can not stop the car. They bleeded the brake line and changed the fluid, they replaced the master cylinder and after a month is it acting up again. Now they are telling me is is the abs system. I only have 74000 miles on my car and it should not be happen. This should really be recalled. One day I will get into an accident. I have a few near misses. Thank you.

19 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact heard a clicking noise. The brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to leckner Nissan (6570 amherst Ave, springfield, va 22150) where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder and exhaust needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 76,000. The VIN was not available.

20 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2017

When applying brake during driving, brake pedal dropped to floor causing the car to not stop as normal, almost resulting in two separate accidents. Also, when starting the car, brake pedal dropped to floor. Does not happen consistently, but several times over the last month. Midas replaced the master cylinder, as they suggested, but the incident happened twice after. All times were on city streets. Instead of the normal light touch needed I've used since 2009, I had to stomp the brake completely to get it to stop and avoid accidents.

21 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2017

I was on the road with traffic and the vehicles in front were breaking. As I tried to break my break pedal went all the way to the floor and was not stopping my vehicle. I almost ran into the back of the vehicle in front of me, which if my breaking system did not fail I would have had plenty of time to stop. Took my vehicle into the Nissan dealership and they told me that it was the abs actuator and master cylinder. Waiting to hear back from the regional consumer affairs specialist at Nissan of north America.

22 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2017

In December 2016 I hit a bump and lost all brake pressure. Took car in to Nissan dealer and they said the "seal" was bad and replaced the master cylinder. Today, on my way to work hit a bump and again lost all brake pressure!!! pedal went all the way down to the floor. This is a major safety hazzard. I'm taking the car back to dealership first thing in the morning. This is ridiculous. In may 2017 you (the NHTSA) opened an investigation about these complaints but what has been done???? nothing!! this problem is putting my life in danger as well as everyone else driving on the highways!!.

23 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. While driving various speeds and approaching a stop light or stop sign, the brake pedal had to be depressed to the floorboard to stop the vehicle. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to coral spring Nissan (9350 w atlantic blvd, coral spring, FL 33071, phone (954) 753-1700) where it was diagnosed that the abs actuator and brake master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 151,000.

24 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2017

I felt my brake pedal become very soft. Like it was hitting the floor of the car. Feel like it hit the floor of the car. To the floor in my Murano. I took it to my mechanic and he changed the front breaks and rotors but said he was concerned because the pedal still felt very soft. I took my Murano to the dealer on 8-7-17 for a squishy brake pedal concern. The technician connected the consult 3 Nissan scan tool to the vehicle diagnostics system and found that no codes were stored in the system. Technician then checked all of the brake calipers for any abnormalities and all checked out okay. Dealership recommended having the brake master cylinder replaced. I authorized. Technician test drove the vehicle and noted the brake pedal felt better but it was not 100%. I explained I was not comfortable driving the vehicle, given the brakes weren't working 100%. The technician advised that the next step would be to replace the anti lock brake system actuator. Total for repairs $3242. I was very upset with this solution. I contacted Nissan corporate and expressed my concern about my brakes and I mentioned that I found out the us gov highway safety agency is investigating the malfunctioning brakes on 2009 Murano's. They dismissed my case and said there has not been any recalls for this problem.

25 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. While driving approximately 40 mph over a bump in the road, the brakes suddenly malfunctioned while attempting to stop. During the incident, the brake pedal extended to the floorboard and the braking distance was extended. The vehicle was taken to two separate independent mechanics who diagnosed that the master cylinder was faulty. The local Nissan dealer (hudson Nissan in charleston, south carolina) indicated that the ecu was faulty. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 154,000.

26 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2017

My vehicle is 2009 Nissan Murano. Iwent over a slight dip leaving a business parking lot on to the road and when I tried to apply the brakes, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor without engaging the brakes. I had to pump the brakes repeatedly to get the car to stop. If I did not have much more than the usual distance available to stop, the results would have been bad. I took it to my mechanic who replaced the master cylinder as that was what the symptoms suggested, but it did not fix the issue. I then took it to the Nissan dealer, who I was surprised did not know of the issue even though an investigation was underway since may. They diagnosed the problem as the abs actuator with a cost of $2500 to resolve.

27 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2017

I have a 2009 Nissan Murano sl awd. I'm the 2nd owner, and most maintenance was done by byerly Nissan in louisville, ky. The rear brakes were just recently serviced with new pads. After the service, a loss of brake pressure was experienced while driving. After a fight, byerly Nissan replaced the master cylinder saying that was the issue. Since then, I've again lost brake pressure. It's not something that happens regularly, which makes it more unexpected when it does happen. This is dangerous and needs to be recalled / addressed as I'm seeing many complaints online with the same issue.

28 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2017

Driving along hit hard bump went to apply the brakes & peddle went to the floor. On another occasion the brakes did the same thing. I had the master cylinder replaced thinking that would correct the problem. The problem continues to exist. I have heard that the problem exists in other owners cars.

29 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2017

While starting the car the brake pedal goes almost to the floor and has become very soft or spongy. After "pumping" the brake it comes up but is still spongy. After driving the car a while it again looses pedal and continues to be spongy. Can't seem to be diagnosed and is worrisome. Car was both driven and stationary. Some have suggested master cylinder but there is plenty of fluid. Some have stated it is an abs problem and needs replacement??.

30 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2017

Started having trouble with brake pedal feeling soft had brake fluid checked, and fluid level was okay. The brake pedal started to feel okay. On may 4th 2017 my wife was driving home from the store and went over a bump in the road right before a stop light. When she tried to stop the brake pedal went to the floor and she was unable to stop. I drove the car to the Nissan dealership, about 3 miles using the back roads and the park brake to stop. The dealer called and said the master cylinder and brake actuator need to be replaced and will cost over $3,000. 00. The work is suppose to be done today. I hate to have work done if this will not fix the problem. I am a retired Nissan employee and have owned many Nissan vehicles and never had a problem until now. Thanks.

31 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. While quickly depressing the brake pedal to make an emergency stop, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle failed to immediately stop. The driver had to pump the brake pedal a second time before the brakes operated normally. The contact indicated that the failure did not occur when braking under normal driving situations. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (auto-nation Nissan in pembrook pines, florida) where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder was faulty. The master cylinder was replaced, but the failure continued. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was later diagnosed that the abs actuator was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 93,000.

32 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2017

Braking power reduced/lost, even when fully apply brakes. (this has happend a few time, but they would restore as fast as they would occur. ) this time, I was able to have the dealer validate brake lose. They replace master cylinder and they reported issue still there. They are next looking at abs. Vehicle still at the dealer.

33 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2017

New brakes 2016 complete. In February. 2017 brake pedal became spongey while attempting to stop. If you push hard enough, it will go to the floor. This happens quite often. Replaced the master cylinder, did not help. While attempting to stop at a stop sign, the right front tire hit a patch of ice, and the break puddle went to the floor.

34 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2017

My brakes went out. The brake caliper or abs pump is bad. They are expensive parts to rplace one and then replace the other espically whem the brake master cylinder may go back out in 6 months. I see many complaints that it went bad in 3 to 6 months.

35 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2017

During the winter I was driving about 15mph and attempted to stop on an icy road. Since then, my brake pedal is completely soft and goes all the way down to the floor in order for me to slow down or come to a stop. I have had my break pads and rotors replaced, as well as a new master cylinder installed. Nothing has solved my issue of having a soft pedal. This is really scary on the highway and I have three children to drive around. I have reached out to Nissan corporate who told me that unless there was a recall, they will not help me. I asked them to send me a notice in writing stating that they are not willing to help for my records. I am praying for my safety and the safety of my children, that NHTSA does something about this and soon. Nissan has been negligent and unapologetic.
