64 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder based on all problems reported for the 2005 Pathfinder.

1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

The fuel gauge is saying "empty tank" even though I pumped $50 worth of gas.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

2005 Nissan Pathfinder. Consumer writes in regards to technical service bulletin recommended that fuel level sending unit be replaced and requests assistance for repairs. The consumer stated he took the vehicle to the dealer, because the instrument panel fuel gauge was giving an incorrect reading. He explained to the dealer, the instrument panel showed the vehicle had approximately one-quarter tank of fuel, when in fact the fuel tank was empty and the service engine light had illuminated. He also pointed out to the mechanic, that due to the inaccuracy and erratic movement of the fuel gauge reading, it could stall, at any time a resent an unsafe condition of the vehicle and compromise the life and safety of his passengers. After a careful review was conducted by the Nissan technician, it was determined that the problem was due to the fuel sending unit malfunctioning, which was discovered earlier by Nissan, in which a technical service bulletin was issued. Nissan denied the consumers request to have the fuel sending unit replaced free of charge, because the vehicle was outside of the new vehicle limited warranty. The consumer stated Nissan has since issued a safety recall regarding the fuel sending unit and extended the primary warranty.

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

Faulty fuel sensor gave me impression I had more gas causing me run out of gas in traffic. I have read many complaints online of this happening to other Nissans with this same fuel system and Nissan needs recall this system. I filled the tank and now the fuel gauge is not working. ## VIN passed ## Nissan Pathfinder 2005 le ##.

4 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2012

The fuel quantity indicator upon filling up the tank froze at one half a tank mark on the indicator. The next time the fuel tank was filled up on 5/3/2012, the tank indicator went from half a tank level reading to a empty tank reading when the tank was filled up. The low fuel light came on, as did the service the engine light came on and has stayed on ever since. Since the fuel quantity indicator now shows an empty tank, you could very easily think that you were going to run out of fuel, when in fact you have a full tank of fuel. To a driver who did not fill up the vehicle, this could lead to an attempt to fill up a tank that was already full.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2012

Failed emissions test because of failed fuel level sensor, can suddenly run out of gas on full gauge or overflow when gauge says empty when filling up tank.

6 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2012

The fuel sensor reads inaccurate fuel levels and has caused me to run out of gas while it was driving. I had to walk in the cold to the gas station to get a container to fill my car up. The sensor reads "-----" and the gauge shows an empty tank. Their is a recall for the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder but their is no recall for the 2005 Pathfinder when it comes to the fuel sensor. This is shameful considering this is an all too common problem that people are experiencing as noted by the raves online. Nissan should be helping their consumers and keep the owners safe.

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

My car had 1/4 fuel, I filled the tank to full, the gas gauge do not set the car to full tank, I read the book and made the instructions but the gauge do not change, when I run the car for 2 hrs. And I turn off, it began to change to full tank. The other issue was when I had a 1/2 tank of gasoline. . . I stop for 5 minutues and I leave the car on, when I returned saw the gas gauge in empty. . . Actually I have the check engin light on for some days and off for the others days.

8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2011

The fuel level sensor shows partially full tank all the time and service engine light comes on. This is very dangerous and the first time it happened, we did not realize it and ran out of gas and ended up stranding my family on a busy highway. Apparently this is a common theme among all 2005 - 2009 Nissan Pathfinder, xterra and frontier owners and there needs to be a service recall for this! I have seen numerous forums and this sensor has failed anywhere from 40k miles onwards and costs anywhere from 400 - 600 dollars to fix. Please ensure that Nissan takes care of this issue as soon as possible. Thanks.

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2010

Fuel indicator shows that the fuel tank is empty when it is actually full. Also the check engine light is always on when it is reset and service has been done. The indicator registering empty puts the driver at risk for accident and death.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. When the check engine light illuminated he noticed that the gas gauge failed. The gauge reads empty whether the fuel tank was empty or full. The vehicle was taken to the garage to diagnose the failure in the fuel level sensor. The manufacturer took report 68729973 and they advised him that he had to take the vehicle to the dealership to be diagnosed for them to consider assisting with the repairs. He also experienced a failure with the transmission due to the defective radiator which caused the radiator fluid to leak into the transmission. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

I own a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, and I am the original buyer. At approximately 92,000 miles my vehicle developed the fuel gauge failure where the gauge reads a 1/4 tank even if full or empty, and the dte indicator is just ----. I took it in with 93,855 miles in August 2010 for an extended warranty repair. This repair was declined for coverage (not a Nissan warranty) and I paid $408. 65 to have it repaired at the Nissan dealer. In December 2010, I received from Nissan a letter relating this exact problem/failure and that all 2005 thru 2008 Pathfinders were being issued a warranty extension of up to 6 years and 72,000 miles. From doing research, I understand Nissan originally did this for just 2006 thru 2008 vehicles, but there was such an outcry from owners of 2005s that they were later included. In the Nissan letter, it stated that if you had this fault and had it repaired at your expense, you could send in documentation for a refund. There was no mention of the 6 year or 72,000 mile limitation in the letter for prior repairs. I sent in my documentation. It makes no sense that a fault of the manufacturer does not cover all repairs, but it appears that those who bought the early vehicles with obviously more miles than the newer ones are being discriminated against since my refund was denied. I have read on your site that many others with 2005s are also being denied. Nissan should do what is right and pay for these repairs. It is a safety issue since one can run out of gas at an inopportune time, or even pump in gas and have it overflow due to the tank being full and the driver not knowing it. They could try to force in fuel due to a 1/4 tank indication, and while refueling, after putting in 3 gallons, the automatic pump cuts off the flow. The driver knows that 3 gallons did not fill a 1/4 full tank so they keep pulling the handle trying to fill the tank. They would then be rewarded by having fuel shoot out of the tank possibly on them , and possibly having it ignite.

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2010

8-9-2010 I began having difficulty getting my car to shift into reverse. Within 2 weeks, while driving down a crowded highway, my car wouldn't shift from 3rd to 4th, and I could smell something burning. When I finally found a spot to pull over and park, a large puddle of fluid leaked all over the ground. I was alone, in an area I didn't know, and nearly got rear-ended several times when it wouldn't shift gears. I took it to several shops, and the transmissions was ruined. It would have to be rebuilt or replaced, both totalling thousands of $ I don't have. I borrowed money to have it rebuilt. Within 2 weeks, I started having the same issues. When I took it back to the shop, the technician said radiator coolant had leaked into the transmission and it would have to be rebuilt or replaced again. After looking online, I see hundreds of complaints for the exact same issue. For the fuel system, approximately 5/2010, the fuel gauge will drop to empty, even though there will still be fuel in the tank. Sometimes it will stick to mid-full when there is no fuel. Adaptive equipment, when I start the vehicle and try to warm it up, it will only blow cold air, never warm no matter how long it runs.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

2005 Nissan Pathfinder, service engine light is on due to the fuel level sensor (fuel tank is full, gage read 1/4 or half) and this leads me to not know how much fuel is in the vehicle. The vehicle has 51,000 miles.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

We own a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. About 6 months ago, the gas gauge started working erratically. We would fill up the tank and it wouldn't register at all and then the next time we got in the car it would register something, but the miles to empty was never accurate. Eventually it got to where it didn't work at all and just stayed on empty. I finally had to learn how many miles I would get per tank and fill up based on that number. Then one day after a long trip, I got a little off on the mileage and ran out of gas completely on a major freeway in the inside lane with no shoulder. Fortunately, I did not have my two children in the car and within about 10min of running out of gas, a state trooper pulled up behind me and pushed me out of harms way. However, had that state trooper not shown up, it would have been very bad and it certainly was dangerous for all involved. It turns out that Nissan has had issues with the fuel level sending unit on several of their models through multiple years. For some reason, they did not include the 2005 model on their recall of this defective part. Our car did fail its recent inspection because of the faulty part and my husband ended up replacing it himself at our cost. I hope something is done to correct this issue.

15 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that the service engine warning light illuminated while the fuel level gauge would only indicate that the fuel tank was half full. The contact stated that the fuel tank was full with gasoline. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the contact was advised that the fuel sensor sending unit was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 52,000 and the current mileage was 59,000.

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2010

2005 Nissan Pathfinder: service engine soon light code p0463 was diagnosed as a failed fuel sending unit. Failure resulted in inaccurate measurement of fuel present in the vehicle's fuel tank. The total cost of parts and labor to replace the failed sending unit at a Nissan service department was just less than $600.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated the fuel sending unit has malfunctioned causing the gas tank to give an inaccurate reading. The contact stated that while driving it's difficult to tell how much fuel is in the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. The contact noticed a recall for the fuel sending unit on the 2006 model but not the 2005 model path finder. The contact stated the manufacturer should reissue the recall to later model vehicles. The failure mileage was 60,000.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

The molded fuel tank shell has deformed, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. This could cause the vehicle to run out of gas and stall in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. This is the same condition and parts that are on the 2006 Pathfinder. Nissan issued a recall to replace the fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank with a new one that has a modified float arm. On the 2006 and 2008 year models of Pathfinder but not the 2005. The recall notice issued was NHTSA campaign id 10v075000. How can this condition be acceptable for the 2005 model and considered unsafe for later year models?.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Fuel gauge has been behaving erratically for over a year. In the last 6 months it works some of the time and dte indicator is stuck to "----" all the time. When fuel level drops below 1/4 of tank, it always shows empty, and even after filling up, it still shows empty for a long time. I can only guess how much fuel I have at all times, based on overall mpg rating and mileage since last fill-up. I've already got stuck once with no gas, thankfully not in the middle of a highway which could have been extremely dangerous and hard to get gas to the car. This apparently is an issue with thousands of owners of 2005 Nissan Pathfinders, like mine, yet Nissan hasn't recalled this units, even though they recalled 2006 and later models, which indicates a major pattern of failure in their Nissan Pathfinder fuel level sensors. They are forcing me to replace the sensor and pump at a cost of almost $600 when it should be a part replaced as a part of a recall. Please, do something about it. There are thousands of people out there with 2005 Pathfinders that have the same problem and Nissan is completely ignoring us!!!!.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2010

2005 Nissan Pathfinder. Check engine light came on after filling up with gas. The gas gauge reads empty and fuel light is on even though the tank is full. Called Nissan told me this was a very common problem among Nissan SUV's but unfortunately there is no recall for my personal vehicle. I was told just to watch my mileage so as to not run out of gas or repair the fuel gauge sensor @ an estimated cost of $600. If this is a well known problem why can't the consumer get any help?.

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

Vehicles fuel system is faulty. I noticed that the gas gauge reads empty after having a full tank of gas, additionally the digital "distance to empty" display does not work properly. At times the low gas indicator will be displayed even after I filled the tank up. I have been in two different situations where I ran out of gas on the highway thinking that I had enough gas for my journey. This is a major safety hazard. Nissan replaced the parts on 2006 & 2007 vehicles but refuse to replace my 2005 device quoting that it has high miles and out of warranty.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

When my 2005 Pathfinder's fuel gauge is at half a tank, the dte says ----. I have heard about the recall for the 2006 Pathfinder which is the exact same model as the 2005. This needs to be fixed by Nissan!.

23 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

I bought a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder in sept of 08, it had 39990 miles on it. A couple of months ago, my check engine light came on and the fuel gauge needle dropped from a full tank to empty. I took it to my mechanic and told him what had happened, he said it sounded like the fuel sending unit, so he hooked it up to the computer and that is exactly what it said the problem was. My Pathfinder has 94000 miles on it now(54000 is what I put on it) I did a search online and found at topix. Com, in the Pathfinder forum out of 48 posts 10 were the 2005 Pathfinder, 14 were 2006, 7 were 2007, 2 were 2008 & 1 was the 2009 all with the very same problem. There seems to be a re-occurring problem here. The recall on the Pathfinder with the same problem was for the ones produced between 1/06 & 3/06 or 10/7-1/08. I think that this needs to be investigated. I own 2 Nissan maximas one is a 1994 the other 2001 and I have never had any issues with them. Please see what you can do about this.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2010

My 2005 Nissan Pathfinder hit a metal object in the road with one of the front tires. The object was propelled under the car towards the rear. There it contacted the fuel tank and punctured the tank. This caused 16-18 gallons of gasoline to flow out of the tank. After stopping I had to step through a steady stream of gasoline to remove my infant daughter from the middle row's driver's side seat. At this time I'm aware of no other damage sustained to the vehicle. Police and fire department responded to the scene, and the police report is available upon request. This incident appears to be consistent with events described in the recall 06v003000 for the 2005 Nissan murano, however to my knowledge it appears the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder has not been recalled for this issue. Currently I'm awaiting the final repair bill and determination if anything beyond the fuel tank was damaged. At this time the current repair planned is to have the fuel tank replaced. The old fuel tank is being kept in the event it is needed for insurance or safety inspection.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2010

I bought the car in Feb. Of 2009 and by March of 2009 the fuel sensor started acting funny. It was not covered(which it should have been by the dealer) and I could not afford to pay out of pocket. Now the fuel level will read "- - -" when the tank is less than 1/4 a tank of gas and it also makes the "service engine light" come on. It is not safe for families to be driving with a defective fuel sensor. I did receive the something in the mail about a recall on the gas gauge, but my vehicle had just passed the 72000 mile mark(72135 roughly) so I was told that it was not covered and I would have to pay out of pocket for the problem. I have been looking online and the fix is very expensive $500 and up. On a one income home I cannot afford to pay for a part that should have been fixed by the dealer before I bought the vehicle! also, when locking the car the horn does not sound anymore. This is not a huge deal but I am wondering if it has something to do with the "service engine light" that came on because of the fuel sensor.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

The fuel gauge is no longer working. The computer in the vehicle cannot read if any fuel is in the tank in turn lighting the "service engine soon" light. This is a great concern as the drive doesn't know how much fuel is in the vehicle which may cause serious accidents as a result of a stalled vehicle in traffic.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

Noticed a fuel gauge down to empty after gas was filled up. Since the first time it failed, the fuel gauge has never been the same. It reads half or empty never in between no matter how much gas is in the tank. Was informed by Nissan dealership that its a know problem with the fuel send unit. Nothing has been done to correct it as of yet. Nissan has been contacted numerous times and have failed to correct the issue. The 2006 Nissan Pathfinder with the same issue has been recalled but 2005 has not been recalled.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

My 2005 Nissan Pathfinder has 58,136 miles and the gas gauge has started to malfunction. When filling up the tank, it takes driving the car for at least 30 miles before the gauge will move from empty and then the dte display never shows how many miles I have remaining and it show four dashes and sometimes 0. I am never sure of how much gas I actually have since the gauge is no longer accurate. This is a potential safety issue and I am concerned that they are recalling all models above the 2005 when we are having the same issue. Please help!.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

Service engine soon light started coming in and out and dte- distance to empty reads empty along with an erratic fuel gage which fluctuates from full to one quarter tank although vehicle may be full of fuel. Diagnosis code of p0463-fuel sending unit pulled by dealership. This is second time this part as failed with the first being at 32,711 miles. I'm very concerned that my vehicle may run out of fuel while on the road, a major issue for my familys safety considering we have young children. This is a serious issue which clearly needs to be investigated.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. After driving 45mph and then filling up the gas tank, the gauge went to empty and the check engine light and fuel empty light came on. The contact spoke with an authorized dealer who stated a fuel gauge sensor and delivery unit needed to be replaced, no repairs had been made at the time of the complaint. The failure is a recurring issue. The failure mileage was 66000. The current mileage was 66300.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that the engine light came on and the fuel gauge suddenly dropped to empty, when it actually had about one quarter tank. The failure seems to be intermittent but is becoming progressively worse. The manufacturer was contacted and they stated there was nothing they could do. The contact stated that the failure defect is the fuel tank sensor. The vehicle was being repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

32 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2010

In January 2010 on 2005 Nissan Pathfinder the fuel distance to empty reader began showing inaccurate readings (ie. With full tank it would read 0 miles to empty, or with 1/4 tank left it would read as though tank was full). Service engine soon light would sporadically light-check showed for fuel sensor. Than without warning the gas gauge itself began to give false readings, same as above. Within several days lost all power on vehicle while driving on highway almost causing a crash. Repair facility states that vehicle was out of gas though gauge was registering more than 1/4 tank left. Further investigations shows this is a common problem with Nissan vehicles, but Nissan has failed to recall this safety issue.

33 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

1. Gas gauge was reading past empty so on my way to drop my kids off at school stopped and fueled up. Prepared to fill up the tank since the reading was past empty but the tank would only hold about 2. 7 gallons. A couple weeks later the same thing happened but the opposite; the gauge was reading 3/4 tank full but obviously the reading was wrong because my wife ran out of gas and was stranded. 2. This is a recurring issue; the fuel gauge has not worked properly since Feb 2010 3. Took the truck into Nissan for repair and was told there is no recall report on the 2005 Pathfinder's fuel gauge but there is a recall on other models. I was told the repair would cost around $500.

34 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. When the contact started the vehicle, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxiliary tank). The contact experienced the identical failure as mentioned in the recall defect. The VIN was excluded from the recall. The failure mileage was 59,000. The current mileage was 61,000.

35 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

I am getting obdii codes (p0463) and "check engine" sign is on even after reset. Once my fuel tank is less than 3/4 and I refill it after it was close to be empty I am getting "check engine" sign on problem. I know that it is related to a fuel tank level gauge. I also know that there are hundreds of people like me that experiencing exactly the same problem but Nissan doesn't cover faulty part replacement for free. We need to do something with it! thanks.
