Radiator cracked at 91,000 miles causing transmission to fail. $3800 cost to repair.

4 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/06/2016

The source of the contamination is a cracked atf line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator. I had to replace the radiator and the transmission.

5 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

Nissan knows about this issue in fact it involves multiple years and models. The radiator cracks and leaks into the transmission ruining both. They entered into a settlement agreement but set the bar so high that it is impossible to meet. This car technically has low mileage for a 10 year old vehicle yet misses the top parameter by 16,000 miles. This is unacceptable .

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/11/2015

Radiator cracked leaked coolant in transmission, ruining it.

7 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/24/2015

A hesitation in the vehicle's acceleration began occurring frequently upon depressing the accelerator after a full stop at a stop sign or red light, but not at any other time in driving the vehicle. The problem was first noted when departing the dealership after which a new timing chain had been replaced. When reviewed by the dealership upon return to the service area (another appointment had been made at later time), a loss of over one quart of transmission fluid was detected (over what time period was unclear), but no known source of external leakage was found. This led to the conclusion that internal leakage was very likely occurring. Due to the many instances of radiator cracks and toxic mixing of fluids among similar year models (mid-2000 model years of Nissan Xterra), the dealership recommended that the radiator be replaced and the transmission thoroughly flushed, which might prevent the transmission from requiring a complete overhaul in the future - although there are no guarantees. This work was completed for a total of $1500 including discount; the incident occurred well after the extended warranty provided by the manufacturer for resolving issues that had been experienced by others, hence the dealership's charges. A request was nonetheless made to get reimbursed by the manufacturer (Nissan), currently under review. It is possible that this issue was dealt with at a very early stage and might therefore result in a lower probability of transmission problems in the future, which could cost several thousand dollars ($6-7,000 or more). Other drivers/owners have typically experienced more severe issues, such as shaking/stalling vehicles and/or illuminated dashboard lights indicating engine problems.

8 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

We just discovered our 2007 Nissan Xterra (117,000 miles) is one of the many Nissans to have the radiator crack and leak coolant into the transmission and transmission fluid into the cooling system. The car now needs around $6,000 in repairs to fix the transmission, radiator, etc. We bought a warranty from the dealer when we bought the car in 2010. The warranty covers the the transmission up to 120,000 miles. We have taken the car to the dealership for the last five years for regular service and was never informed about this design defect. The dealer will not fix the transmission as covered in the warranty.

10 Carrier/rack problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/14/2015

I currently have a 2008 Nissan Xterra with 146k miles. I took my car into sutherlin Nissan at the mall of georgia as the service engine soon light was on and was told that the radiator was cracked and leaking fluid into the transmission that both would need to be replaced. The dealer informed me that the cost would be over $4k to replace both. I took it somewhere else and had the radiator replaced. However, I’m still experiencing problems with the transmission. I took it to a korean shop votech where the owner vo is very familiar with all types of cards. I explained to vo what the issue was and he said that over 90% of the Nissan rear wheel drive trucks that come in have the same problem and that Nissan should be in a lawsuit or issuing a recall real soon on these vehicles. I’m a single mother of two and I’m unemployed, so of course I can’t afford to pay $4k to replace a transmission. I have paid Nissan all of this money to purchase the vehicle and they are aware of this issue, then they should be held accountable for faulty parts in their vehicles regardless of how many miles are on the vehicle. I’m voicing my concern as a customer and I want people to know not to buy Nissan if they are not going to treat their customers unfairly.

11 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/14/2015

When it turned cold Jan/Feb 2105 our daughter told us the heat was not working. But she knew we did not have the money to repair so we did not worry about it. We own a 2000 chevy truck & the heat has not worked for years & we just live with it. So we never thought about the radiator/coolant being the problem. Then something major happened-our daughter was driving home from auburn al to our home in opelika al & she called us saying the car would not go over 25-30 mph. We were out of town, it was 10 pm at night so we told her to keep driving and get home to a safe place (her life was more important than stopping on the side of the road--a young lady all by herself) she got home, parked it & when we returned home we took it to a local repair shop that we trust. He called us the next day & said I have devastating news. He told us about the service report put out on Nissan Xterras in regard to the major, well known to Nissan problem of when the coolant/radiator cracks because of a faulty when in manufacturing radiator is put in it is a known by Nissan bad one. It cracks & leaks into the transmission in which the coolant mixes with the transmission fluid & creates a toxic hell stew that destroys the transmission. He said your car is worth $5,000 but the cost to repair is $7,000. I called Nissan they told me I had to take it to a Nissan dealer for their diagnosis and the diagnosis is the same. My husband is very, very sick and we have huge medical, pharmacy, hospital bills and I have had breast cancer with chemo that has caused an autoimmune disorder (almost lost my left eye) and our 15 year-old daughter goes to children's hospital in birmingham al for rheumatoid arthritis. We thought we were buying a very dependable car for $14,000 only 3 1/2 years ago and now it is 4500 pounds of junk metal. If Nissan had told us about the problem, we could have been proactive.

12 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

Transmission damage attributed to contamination by engine coolant. The source of the contamination is a cracked atf line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator. My 2006 Xterra has had same issue. Trans and radiator had to be replaced.

13 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/03/2014

This problem has been happing to my vehicle for awhile but I was unaware until last week. My truck was overheating and the antifreeze had a white substance in it. My mechanic told me it was mixed with transmission fluid. The radiator cracked and the trans cooler which is inside leaked. The two fluids mixed and has caused transmission problems. My radiator has to be replaced and the trans will be flushed several times. The extent of damage to the trans is undetermined at this time as it is still in the shop. I researched this problem and found it to be a very common problem with Nissan Xterras. The symptom's of others vehicles are exactly the same as mine. Nissan has had a very poor settlement in a class action suit but it is very poor. This shows that they are aware of the poor engineering design and/or parts. This problem is leaving people with several thousand dollars in repairs ($3800 and up) for a problem that Nissan is aware of. Even though you have maintained your vehicle routinely this problem will still occur due to Nissans poor design and parts. This problem should be covered under a recall and if an owner has fixed the problem they should be reimbursed for their expense to repair the problem.

14 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

While driving the vehicle at 40-45 mph and 1200 rpms or 60 mph and 1500 rpms, a vibration as if running over rip bars on the side of a highway happened. At first, it was thought to be a universal; however, after replacing the part, the vibration continued but happened at all speeds above 40 mph regardless of the rpms. Research showed that there was a problem with the transmission coolant system cracking, causing coolant to leak into the transmission but no recall had been issued. A local dealership said they had no report of this type of problem. They suggested turning off the overdrive and if the problem stopped, the transmission needed to be flushed. This was the case, but before we could have the transmission flushed, it started having a roaring noise. When the transmission fluid was checked, it looked like a strawberry milkshake and so did the coolant in the radiator. Both have been flushed but apparently when the initial leak happened, it also allowed coolant to leak into the computer for the transmission. While driving the car, up a steep hill, the rpms grew but the speed decreased. Shifting down showed that the gear had been lost because the vehicle performed normally in the lower gear. Another dealership out of the area said they had several hundred Xterra's brought in for the same problem and that we would lose one gear at a time until we lost them all. This is a $3,500+ repair and if we lose gears in high traffic, we will be possibly rearended or stranded on a highway, which is not acceptable. It is now October and nothing has been resolved. A recall is needed before someone is in a serious accident!.

15 Carrier/rack problem of the 2003 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/20/2014

During a drive home from a weekend in the country, my Xterra began to overheat. A faint pop, like a backfire, happened. After I heard the noise, a consistent ticking or pinging sound started coming from the right front side of my Xterra. The sound is consistent with the acceleration. Once I got home, I started to research the issue online. Found that 2000-2004 Xterras have a very common problem with the exhaust manifold cracking due to weak material. . Read more...

16 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/29/2014

Internal radiator transmission cooler cracked leaking coolant into the transmission and destroying it, rendering it useless. The transmission failed on me while I was driving and the vehicle gave me absolutely no warning lights or any indication of an issue occurring with the transmission. I had no advance notice so I was unable to avoid any damage to my transmission.

17 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

Transmission failure due to contamination by engine coolant. The source of the contamination is a cracked line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator. Resulting in having to replace radiator and now the whole transmission. Current there is a recall however I was never notified of recall. My car is under 8 years old and has approx. 152,000 miles, hence, does not fall under the settlement of class action suit ordering Nissan to reimburse repairs. I am now out $4,000 even though Nissan is aware this is a pure mechanical error on their part. I was driving with my young daughters in the car and almost caused a pile up! shame on you Nissan!.

18 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

Radiator cracked leaking coolant into the transmission.

19 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Transmission damage attributed to contamination by engine coolant. The source of the contamination is a cracked atf line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator. Resulting in having to replace radiator and now the whole transmission. Current there is a recall campaign # 10v517000, however I was never notified of recall. My car actually is 8 years old and has approx. 105,000 miles, hence, does not fall under the settlement of class action suit ordering Nissan to reimburse repairs.

20 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

Nissan sent a warranty notification letter that the radiator could crack and leak into the transmission. The letter stated the warranty ran out at 80k miles. They would not replace the radiator and transmission until there was an actual problem. I didn't start having problems until about 96k miles. When I brought it in to the dealer, I was told it would cost me $3000 my part to fix it and they would cover the rest. I have not been able to afford to make the repair at this time. Nissan knew the part was bad and still did nothing to correct the problem.

21 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

Cracked radiator causing coolant to leak into the transmission. Once mixed with the transmission fluid this lethal combination kills the valves, seals and torque converter -- rendering your entire transmission useless. My Xterra is not able to drive. Got quoted over three thousand to repair and my car is not even paid off yet.

22 Carrier/rack problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

On Friday, August 2, 2013, approximately 5:40pm, the car started to have difficulty shifting (automatic), speed became erratic, slowed rapidly. I was on a service road next to a freeway during rush hour traffic in a busy area of scottsdale. I was near pinnacle Nissan and decided to drive there. I had a couple very busy intersections to go through to drive the 1 mi to pinnacle. The car would not accelerate more than 10 miles an hour and was not shifting out of low gear. I was very concerned I would stall or the car would cease driving in these intersections. Pinnacle Nissan service diagnosed the issue (8/3/13) as a cracked radiator cooling tube that caused coolant to mix with transmission fluid ruining components in the transmission. A complete new transmission and radiator is required to fix this now. This issue is not related to abusive driving, I do very little off road and no towing, and is not a lack of or improper maintenance. This is a know design flaw by Nissan. It appears there is a high number of Nissan problem SUV's, 2005 to 2010, that experience this same problem after roughly 80,000 miles. Based on my experience, this is a potentially dangerous safety issue especially if someone would be driving at higher speeds on a busy freeway.

23 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/26/2013

I was driving on the freeway when suddenly the car stalled. Pressed on the gas and car would not move just humming sound. I knew that it had to be transmission problem. Had car towed to transmission shop. They notified me that there had been numerous complaints about the Nissan. After looking at the car they saw that the radiator had a crack and that coolant had leaked into the transmission. After taking the transmission apart I was notified that the seals, valves, torque converter, including the computer were all damaged, the transmission would have to be flused replaced or repaired, the radiator flushed replaced or repaired, the engine flushed. All this costing about $4,000. This problem has been known to Nissan and I was never informed. I'm 65 and on fixed income. I need this car and need help.

28 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

Nissan north America inc. Has sent me two letters indicating a safety recall notice for trailer hitches sold on 2005 Nissan Xterra vehicles. I have called and driven to the local Nissan dealership but they can not find a recall for my VIN number and refuse to look at my trailer hitch. I handed the service advisor my recall notice that had my VIN printed on it, and they have still refused to look at my vehicle. I have called Nissan's customer service number: 1-800-647-7261 (1-800-nissan1) the representatives insisted that my VIN number does not have a recall and were not able to help me. I have done some research on my own time, and found the NHTSA campaign numbers for this recall 05v458000 and 05e062000. I have called the Nissan customer service number and asked them to add the NHTSA campaign numbers to my file. All the Nissan representatives that I have spoken with insist there is no recall for my VIN because they cannot find it in their computer system. I don't believe this recall campaign is tracked by the VIN number because the recall is for an optional accessory. I purchased a 2005 Xterra with a trailer hitch installed. I am worried the hitch is defective and part of the recall that I have received notices. Nissan has refused to check my vehicle to verify if the trailer hitch needs to be replaced.

29 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/02/2002

In Dec 2012 I had to take my 2006 Nissan Xterra to the garage, there I was told that my radiator had cracked in 3 places and that I had coolant in my transmission. I had to replace the radiator and have the transmission flushed several time. Then on April 10 I was driving home. While getting on the interstate my check engine light came on and my vehicle did not want to go (like it wasn't getting any gas). Took the Xterra back to the garage and was told that I needed to rebuild or replace my transmission. I feel that so many people have had problems with this that Nissan needs to do recalls and reinburse everyone that has already had this problem. If they were any kind of "good" company that is exactly what they would do! very dissappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
