17 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving at low speed and applying brake pressure there were no brakes whatsoever. This resulted in an accident. The vehicle skidded, went over small embankment, and struck a tree where it came to a stop, vehicle was towed to the a wrecker service shop. Has not been to a repair shop or dealership. Also, there was no explanation as to why this occurred. In the past there was an issue where on parking on a incline a block had to be placed behind to wheels to keep itfrom rolling.
Feel brakes on vehicle are defective requiring multiple repairs as a result. Do not think they are safe even after repaired given the repeat frequency of subsequent repairs. In addition, glass panes on all four side windows have long mechanical scratch marks, which sometimes catch glare of sun/headlights when looking out those windows during lane changes. Scratches appear to be result of defective window housing/mechanicals.
When backing up and applying brakes pedal went to the floor, no braking action. Vehicle hit another vehicle. Damage was $ 2500. 00, no injuries.
Terrible brake system-very scary family car.
This is the second time the rotor on the front right side has warped. I had it replaced at around 34000 miles (January 2000) and now, at 63,500 miles, it is needing replacing again. The steering wheel shakes when lightly applying pressure to the brakes at 55-70 mph, the same as what brought me into the dealership the first time around. I am no longer under warranty (3/36) so I will probably have to pay for the replacement (estimate was $270+ from a local shop) for the replacement. There needs to be more investigation on the '99 Alero, maybe even a recall to fix what is causing the problem.
On fourth set of new rotors, just left shop, problem returns one week! help! car is dangerous! dealer new about it to. No safety defec tlisted.
While aplying brakes pedal would slowly go to the floor if you pumped it it would come back and pedal presure felt mushy. While gotng down a hill, pedal went to the floor. Took to GMC dealer and he said brake fluid was contaminated and warranty wouldnt cover repairs. It cost 2100$ to fix it this car has only been seviced at GMC dealers brake fluid had a greenish couler to it . Insurance adjuster took a sample idont no the results of it.
The brake rotors have been replaced twice @ only 40,000 miles. They are now needing replacement again. This vehicle needs to be recalled and someone needs to find out why the rotors keep warping.
While driving about any speed would steep on brake pedal, but brakes will not work as they should, resulting in extended stopping distance. Also, rotors had to be replaced a couple of times.
When applying brakes at 40 mph and higher there is vibration. Vehicle has been taken to dealer 4-5 times, no problem was found.
Vehicle keeps shaking whenever applying brakes at speeds above 30 mph.
Brakes worn, rotors scored, dealer turned rotors, in August 2000 dealer replaced rotors, now June 2001 brakes and rotors bad again. Dealer says not a problem with car, lucky I'm getting that much use out of the brakes.
Right front wheel separated while driving due to lugs and hubs coming off vehicle. Also, brake cable was cut and vehicle was without brakes. Dealer/manufacturer notified .

Each and everytime I step on the brakes I fear losing control. Whenever I step on the brakes the car begins to shake or pulsate or both, at times it becomes really hard to stop. (my emergency brakes are not in working order as well) I made two attempts going on a third to resolve this problem (plates were recut by dealer) but with no success I'm forced to make an offical complaint. I believe this failure to produce/maintain a safe vechile is both the mfg & dealers fault.
When consumer applies brakes vehicle pulsates/vibrates and then veers to the right.
Abs brake ligh illuminates and remains on while vehicle is being driven. Brakes will lock up. Dealer cannot correct problem.
