Oldsmobile Silhouette owners have reported 65 problems related to manifold/header/muffler/tail pipe (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Oldsmobile Silhouette based on all problems reported for the Silhouette.
Intake manifold gasket failed allowing dexcool coolant into the engine and mix with the oil. Total engine failure. Manifold gasket replaced at 58,000 miles. Engine rebuilt at 62,000 miles. Apparently this is happening on thousands of gm vehicles and gm will not cover the cost. In no way should a 1999 van need a new engine.

Known problem with gm engine v6 3800, leaking antifreeze into engine. Intake manifold gasket failure.
The following letter (combined message forum posting & letter to gm of mine) represents the main points in my complaint involving an intake gasket manifold leak in our 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette which we've since repaired for approximately $900. 00:
after recently writing a lengthy complaint letter to Oldsmobile customer service (explaining how I was trying a gm product for the first time after being dissatisfied with Chrysler products for the past 10 years) and after 2 weeks of phone tag with 2 gm customer service reps I was finally told that because I wasn't the original owner, bought it with relatively high mileage (50k mi) and didn't have an extended warranty gm is not going to assist with the repair of my intake manifold gasket problem. I summarized by saying, "so, you're saying that gm doesn't care what 2nd owners of gm vehicles think about gm? you don't care that I won't buy another gm product?" the rep. Responded "that's your choice. "
he went on to say "we don't know how the previous owner maintained the vehicle. . . . " and I responded saying "there are TSB's out there on this problem, over 1500 people who've signed an online petition and gm dealer service techs who immediately point out the problem to owners who go in for totally unrelated service; you can't tell me that gm doesn't know this is a product defect. " he didn't respond. My vehicle is now consuming about 16 oz. Of coolant every 150 miles driven. The rep. Said I shouldn't be driving it at all; easy to say if you could afford to go out and replace it or repair it; not a very good option for our family now. An extensive web search on â??olds Silhouette and intake manifold leakâ?? has produced many stories of exactly the same problem with other owners of this vehicle in the same year. I request that this problem be repaired free of charge as soon as possible to avoid further damage to engine components.

The intake manifold was cracked and leaked antifreeze.
The intake manifold cracked, which caused fluid to leak.
I own a 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette with 62,000 miles. I took the van to a local dealer because of a knocking noise on cold startup. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a failed intake manifold gasket. The failed gasket ruined the hydraulic lifters and had to be replaced. The total bill was $1500. The van had regular maintenance (oil, filters, anitfreeze checked) every 3000 miles. This seems to be a common problem with gm vehicles and dexcool systems. This could have been a major safety issue had the engine failed while driving.
Faulty intake manifold on 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette has caused an engine failure. This failure occurred while my pregnant wife (3 days past due) was driving our 5 yr old son home from the dentist. She was driving 40 mph on a high traffic road when the engine failed! this sudden engine failure could have caused a serious accident.

Lower intake manifold gasket failure. This problem has also occured to a friend of mine who owns a 1999 olds Silhouette.
Car went to dealer to diagnose a knocking sound on cold startup. Diagnosed as a failed intake manifold gasket, cost to repair approx $900. 00. On disassembly, dealer contacted me and stated that the engine internals were so badly fouled (sludge and deposits) that hydraulic lifters needed replacement, cost approx $450. 00. I asked how this could have happened, van has always had engine oil changed at 3000 mile intervals, with new filter and correct oil, and I don't know what to do differently to avoid this happening again. No advice offered, and no suggestions for why the gasket had failed.
A defect in the intake manifold of my 1998 olds Silhouette van caused the engine to fail. This failure occurred while my pregnant wife (3 days past her due date) was driving with our 5 yr old son. While driving 40 mph on a high traffic road, the engine failed. This could have caused a serious accident/injury. Other motorists in her vicinity saw the problem and avoided a collision.

Diagnosed as a failed intake manifold gasket, cost to repair approx $900. 00. On disassembly, dealer contacted me with information that the engine internals were so badly fouled (sludge and deposits) that the hydraulic lifters required replacement. I asked what could have caused this situation, since the van has always gotten regular oil changes every 3000 miles, with new filter and correct oil, and I don't know what to do differently to avoid this same problem again. No information or advice was offered on why the gasket failed, or why the engine was so badly fouled.
An engine diagnosis revealed there was no oil pressure, a blown head gasket, and a leaking intake manifold gasket.
Leaking intake manifold gasket cause oil to be contaminated with coolant. Engine failed.
Our 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette has 45000 miles and needs a new $5000 engine. It has been maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions and the engine has been destroyed by a intake manifold gasket leak which allows corrosive dexcool coolant to leach into the engine. . Read more...

Door would not latch when driving. No power to open door. Also, left front wheel censor malfunctioned for abs traction control/ transmission failed, and intake manifold leak.
Intake manifold gasket - no warning of any problems before finding myself stranded at a gas station due to my van overheating.
The issue we ran into last year is where the intake manifold gasket leaked causing coolant to leak into the engine. We took it into our local dealer, pearson pontiac, gms, olds in sunnyvale, on March 21 2002. Around that time both myself and the dealer, at least that is what I was told, called Oldsmobile customer service asking for assistance since the van was at 41788 miles, 5k miles out of mileage warranty, and the belief on my part that a major engine repair was not reasonable for a van with only 41k miles. Why say the coolant can last 150k miles when it all leaks out at 41k miles? I was turned down for assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. I believe I talked with justin and the case number was c06614725. The dealer diagnosed the issue as a leaking intake manifold gasket. At the same time he determined the lifters should be replaced along with a leaking water pump. The total cost was $1,709. 72. Breakdown was $1,130. 84 for labor and the rest for parts and sales tax. The dealer repair order number is 56819. I've never owned or heard of a vehicle which had a intake manifold coolant leak, water pump and lifters fail at 41k miles. My wife and I are not hard on our cars. This cost was high (over 5% of the original purchase price) and something we did not expect to incur.
Intake manifold gasket leaking at 38,000 miles. Replace by gm under warranty. Intake manifold leaking again at 70,000 miles. Needs to be replaced again. I contacted gm customer assistance and they basically said they wouldn't help me because they already paid for it once. This problem is in addition to brake cylinder problems and other coolant system problems. I also have considerable leaks in this vehicle.
While driving vehicle, it didn't have any speed. While sitting in vehicle, vehicle exploded with flames coming from driver's side. Also, consumer stated muffler burnt hole in gas tank. Contacted dealer and dealer bought vehicle back. Consumer stated service engine light would also illuminate when the vehicle would lose power, mechanics found a hole in the muffler had burned a hole in the plastic gas tank.
I have just found out that my olds Silhouette has a coolant leak in the intake manifold withh only 50000 miles on the odometer. To my discuss I was informed that this is a very common and "predictable" failer. I hope that it has not caused any further damage to my engine. It would have been in the least a reasonable action on behalf of gm to give owners of their vehicles a heads up on this all to common defect.
Ltr fm steve nabholz (mo) request info re gm 3. 1l, 3. 4l and 3. 8l v6 engine w/a faulty intake manifold gasket, his 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette suffered engine damage, inquiring why these engine were not recalled.
The intake manifold gasket failed.
While driving vehicle coolant light illuminated, causing vehicle to shut down. Consumer has notified dealership, mechanic stated head manifold gasket had to be replaced.
