Engine Exhaust System problems of the 1997 Plymouth Neon

Eight problems related to engine exhaust system have been reported for the 1997 Plymouth Neon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2003

1997 Plymouth Neon with 84,000 miles spraying oil onto exhaust. Could cause a fire and have smelled oil burning and seen some smoke. Need to call dealer. Very unsafe.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2003

In heavy rain the car is very hard to steer, I have had to replace the transmission, I have had to replace the 02 sensor, and now the cooling fans don`t work I have also noticed a musty smell when I turn on the air cond. I have also had to replace the egr valve it is just one thing after another that keeps going wrong with this car.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2001

Engine gasket leaks oil onto exhaust pipe. Consumer is responsibile for $600-$700 repair. Gaskets believed to be the wrong size.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2000

Brakes redone after 3 years, head gasket replaced after 4 years, clear coat on paint also had to be replaced, muffler almost fell off, exhaust detected in cabin of car, reverse lights come on intermittently, motor mount broken, seals on windows falling down door jam. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**768018.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2000

This Neon had a know manufactures defect concerning engine head gasket. Oil comes shooting out of the back of the head. Covering the complete back side of the motor. Dripping down on all the hot parts of the engine and exhaust system. My car didn't catch on fire because of this but somebodies will one day. Chrysler knows of the problem yet will not recall it. Can you please look into this and help the poor saps that bought these cars.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2000

Oil light went on, put several quarts of oil in throughout week but dip stick always read empty, oil light stayed on, took to lube shop where they identified a blown head gasket. Took to authorized dealer/repair shop, where they at first would not cover under warranty, but after inspection they replaced the head gasket, as well as a broken cam valve, faulty thermostat, and some exhaust parts, all of which were defective/broken unbeknownst to me. Plymouth covered all repair expenses then.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 10/27/1997

When it rains vehicle vibrates/shimmies and loses power. The dealer statws it was exhaust sensors. Owner has had vehicle into the dealer 4 times about the problem.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem

Vehicle overheats due to the relay sticking in the off position. The engine gaskets are leaking oil which is spraying onto the exhaust system. The manufacturer has been notified.
