SAAB 900 owners have reported 2 problems related to ignition switch (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
1997 SAAB 900 se turbo 2. 0, car began to stall, and would only restart once brought to a complete stop and the keys removed. Stalling continued randomly at high or low speeds. Very dangerous when it stalled at high speeds - the power steering cut out, power and abs brakes - it was as if the key had been removed and all power cut to the car. Faulty ignition switch (electrical portion below keys) required replacement, stalling fixed. Car basically thought the keys were being removed (the electrical contacts on the ignition switch were bad and would cut on and off). ~$400 after parts and labor to replace switch, had to be done immediatelly due to high risk of a dangerous failure at high speeds.

Engine shut off while car was running three times. First two times car was idling, third time car was being driven at 60 mph. Engine shut off with no warning and would not restart. SAAB dealer claimed in the first two instances that this could not possibly happen with car running. In first instance, dealer replaced ignition switch. In second instance, dealer replaced gear position switch. In third instance, dealer replaced chafed wiring harness to passenger seat. We are not convinced that SAAB has fixed this major safety problem, and are even more worried that a chafed wire for the heated seat can cause an immediate engine shutdown on any SAAB 9-3.
