Saturn Aura owners have reported 77 problems related to brake light (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Saturn Aura based on all problems reported for the Aura.
Rear brake lights were on when vehicle was driving although the brake pedal was not depressed. When the brake pedal was pressed lightly, the brake lights went off, and then if more pressure was applied to the brakes they would come on again. Problem appeared to be intermittent but was observed regularly. Vehicle was taken to dealership and service technician performed TSB fix, which was to lubricate bcm connector with dielectric lube and relearn brake pedal position sensor in bcm. Vehicle tested ok after repair. ***note*** this vehicle was involved in a low speed rear end collision in September 2012 where the other driver hit the rear of this car as several cars were braking for a stop light. It is very possible that this problem has been occurring for some time and that this problem contributed to the earlier accident.

I was followed by a passerby to my work parking lot notifying me that the for the 8 miles they were behind me on the highway my brake lights were on. The next morning I noticed it again, could see through my rear view mirror that my brake light was illuminated. I pulled over to the side of the road, put my car in park and the break light remained on. I applied my brake foot pedal and the light turned off until I had the pedal to the floor, after I pulled my foot off the brake the brake light went back on. I verified that my parking brake was not engaged. This issue is not continuous to the point that it happens every time I drive my car but intermittent. The times I notice it are in the morning, most likely because I can see the light illuminate at that time of the day. The temperature those mornings were around 60 degrees fahrenheit. I have also noticed that when this issue is occurring my cruise control does not work, which makes sense considering my car thinks I am applying the brake. I have an appointment scheduled with my dealership to take a look at the issue and have also called gm. From the investigation I have done online I see that you were investigating this issue and I hope that you are continuing. I currently do not feel safe in this car and will be borrowing a friends vehicle for my daily commute until my scheduled appointment.
The brake lights come on when no one is stepping on the brakes and the high-mount stoplamp will work sometimes and not other times. This problem seems similar to the problem that prompted gm to recall the pontiac g6 (the "sister" car to the Aura) in 2009. I don't know how long this problem has been occurring on our car, but we first noticed that the brake lights were on when no one was stepping on the pedal this morning. My wife normally drives the car and stated that she has experienced problems where the cruise control would not set (she has experienced this problem for several years already). It would make sense that if the brake lights are on, the control module would not allow the cruise to be set.

I own a 2009 Saturn Aura xr. My brake lights stay engaged while in motion but disengage when I stop. Tapping the brakes will turn the brake light off briefly while in motion but it will come back on within seconds. Rear drivers cannot determine when I'm stopping using the brake light as an indicator. My cruise control no longer works which I'm told is also tied to the brake lights. The esc warning light comes on frequently and will disengage. The only remedy I've found for this has been turning the car off on. I've sometimes had to do this 5 times within a 20 minute drive. The check engine light in the recent past would go off and on unwarranted but as of late just stays on.

Intermittently the brake lights do not function correctly. When the vehicle is in park the brake light remains on. When thee vehicle is in drive, the brake light stays on. When accelerating, the brake light remains on. Other symptoms may include extended pedal travel required to shift out of park and cruise control does not function correctly.
This is my 2nd complaint regarding the brake lights on my vehicle. 1st incident occurred in the evening when I noticed the brake lights were not working properly. They were doing the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. When accelerating, the brake lights were lit up . . . . When pressing on the brake pedal to notify those behind me that I would be slowing down and/or coming to a complete stop, the brake lights would not illuminate, therefore, potentially causing an accident. . 9/24/13- I contacted grossinger Chevrolet in palatine, IL & scheduled to bring my car in that same morning for evaluation & possible repairs. I just purchased these vehicle mid-August 2013. A diagnostic test was done & repairs were made to the tune of close to $1,000! was told the issue was bcm related & the extended warranty company wasn't going to cover this, which is another issue I am addressing. Not 2 weeks goes by & it's happening again!! I immediately called grossinger, spoke to the same service manager that took care of me the last week of September - he knew I would be calling & said verbatim, "the mechanic that repaired (or I thought) your vehicle told me you would be returning for the same problem". . . Since then, there's been 3 other instances in which other drivers made me aware my brake lights weren't working properly - again, all instances above, the brake lights were doing just the opposite of what they're supposed to do, the most recent being today, 10/13/2013. Please reference my initiaticket # [xxx], "ivoq" from 9/24/2013. Enough already - stand behind your words!! "keeping you safe" - "our engineers and investigators look into problems you report to help ensure you and others stay safe on our nation's roads and highways. " there's nothing safe about malfunctioning brake lights! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the brake lights illuminated despite the brake pedal not being depressed. When the pedal was depressed, the brake lights would stop illuminating. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 85,000.
My brake lights were illuminating like the brake pedal was being depressed; however, the brake pedal was not being depressed. When I did depress the brake pedal, the brake lights would go off completely. Then, after approximately 10 seconds, they would come back on like they were being depressed. Also, the cruise control was not working. It would not set and hold the car at a specific speed.
There is some sort of short in the electrical system. The cruise control is randomly disabled, any the brake lights are functioning backwards. They are on when not pressing the brakes, then go off when pressing the brakes. A few miles down the road, and the my cruise works again and the brake lights go back to normal. A few more miles, and the issues return. This is definitely some sort of electrical short. I just hope it doesn't wind up in an electrical fire. There are several reports of the same issue. Other complaints with the same/similar issues: NHTSA id number: 10535189 NHTSA id number: 10533881 NHTSA id number: 10525153 NHTSA id number: 10515803 NHTSA id number: 10508189.
Noticed that the brake lights stay illuminated all the time regardless of brake pedal position.
The contact owns a 2009 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the brake lights illuminated without the contact depressing the brake pedal. The contact had to slightly touch the pedal to turn off the brake lights. The failure recurred frequently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who replaced the front brakes but refused to inspect the brake lights. The failure was not corrected. The failure was not reported to the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 68,000. The current mileage was 69,800.
I noticed this morning as I was driving to work (dark, 5 am, cst) that the brake light in the back window stays lit. It would go off for about three seconds when the brake pedal was pressed, but then it would come back on and stay lit until the pedal is pressed again. I've done a little research and noticed that this is widespread and common in this car.
First, let me start by saying that I traded-in for my 2008 Saturn Aura in April 2011. Since that time, I have had continuous problems with the car. Today, my car is in the shop to fix the brake lights, cruise control, and traction/esc. Brake lights: on my way home Friday, a concerned citizen had me role down my window en route to tell me that my brake lights stay on the entire time I am driving. After this warning, I did some investigation - sure enough, the lights engage when the brake is not being pushed. Worse yet, the brake lights go off when the brake is pushed. Thank goodness for the person who alerted me to this. Truthfully, I am lucky that I did not get rear-ended or get a ticket. I truly hope the brake light issue is recalled because it is very dangerous. Cruise control: my cruise control does not work all the time. Sometimes it works; sometimes it engages then randomly disengages; sometimes it just plain does engage at all. I can live without cruise control; however, I really don't think this should be happening, as the vehicle is not that old and is very well maintained. Traction/esc: occasionally, my dash will display a warning that says "service traction, service esc, esc off. " it doesn't do this everyday. It just displays the warning at random times - I cannot distinguish a pattern. Overall, I am very displeased with how this vehicle functions. Not only does it cost me money to fix, it takes time out of my day - I get paid hourly at my job. My main concern is the brakes lights, as someone could get seriously hurt, and the problem is very difficult to detect unless another motorist warns you or you do night driving (which I do not). Thank you for hearing me out - I really appreciate it!.
This is my second complaint on here for the same brake light issue. I had trouble with my car brake lights working backwards (on when driving, off when braking) about two years ago, had them fixed and they worked for about eight months and then stopped working again. I took them to a certified gm service station on 4/5/2013 to have them fixed for the second time. I picked up my car from said repairs on 4/8/2013 to only find that on 4/11/13 the brake lights were working backwards again. I took my vehicle back to the same gm service station to have them re-re-repaired on 4/13/13 and picked the car up the same day. On 4/14/13 I am having the same problem with the lights working backwards less than 24 hours after they were supposed to be fixed for the 3rd time! so I will take my car back to the gm center on 4/15/15 to have the brake lights re-re-re-re repaired. The certified service center closest to me is about 30 miles away so everytime I go to get them fixed two vehicles have to drive the round trip (1 vehicle twice and my vehicle once). It is ridiculous to have to pay the exorbitant gas prices because the people at gm are apparently icopatent (which has been corroborated by there inability to make a safety related repair) the us government must force gm to recall the vehicles affected by these faulty break lights and force them to find a solution that will fix the potential dangerous problem. The thing irritating me most is that they are not even trying to find a problem that will actualy correct the faulty equipment. At this point I will even be willing to pay for the repairs if they will just find a permenant solution! signed, very upset with the quality of american made vehicles!.
I purchased my 2008 Saturn Aura in may 2012. I started noticing that my brake light in rear window would come on by itself without braking and would stay on for periods of time. A t first it didn't bother me, but lately it has become frequent. The light would come on and stay on even when cranking the car up. It also comes on while driving, doesn't matter the speed limit it still comes on and stays on for a period of time. It is very misleading because in the middle of flowing traffic the light will come on giving the driver behind me the impression that I am breaking. Also when the light is illuminated, cruise control does not work. I am very concerned for my safety and others safety at this point because it happens so frequently and I have had a driver to become very irate with me because of my brake light coming on giving the impression that I am braking. I am hoping that this issue be thoroughly investigated. Thank you.
Brake light come on when ever stay until whenever did service bulletin 4 times in the last year works temporary I have been dealing with this for 2 1/2 years change everything did every thing by the book.
Over the past few weeks, the brake lights have been working sporadically. Sometimes they stay on, sometimes they do not come on, and sometimes they work opposite (when you press the brakes they go off and when your are not on the brakes they come on). This is an extreme safety hazard. It has gone to a dealer once already and I have already made a second appointment with them for the same issue. From the research I have done this is a common issue for at least 3 gm models. This is dangerous when the brake lights do not work. I drive on the PA turnpike every morning at speeds of 55-65 mph and if my brake lights do not work when I go to slow down, I am at risk of someone hitting me at a high rate of speed. Please look into this issue. It seems this is a common issue with the Saturn Aura, pontiac g6, and chevy malibu.
A fellow driver waved me down to tell me that my brake lights were "backwards," I. E. , the rear brake lights were on until I hit the brakes, then all rear lights went off. Worrisome, to say the least. An internet search revealed a likely problem with the bcm, with which there seems to be a grounding issue. I took the car in for service, and they were able to fix this issue. Other items have come up over time: no response to the remote control to unlock the doors (other buttons can be intermittent). Cruise control disengaging while driving, or cruise not setting at all; doors not locking/unlocking when the car is shifted from park to drive or vice versa; and the newest: the auto window on the driver's side every once in a while will not work, even though the lever is set to auto (resetting does not work; sometimes it will re-engage if the car is turned off for an hour or so, sometimes not). While most of these are "quality of life" issues with an older car, one should not have to maintain constant surveillance of the cruise control and/or rear brake lights and hope that an accident does not occur. Thank you for your time.
My Saturn is exhibiting the brake light problem reported in media. I have videos and photos showing the brake lights on without pedal depressed and most concerning the brake lights not coming on when brake pedal pushed. I've had car serviced at dealership twice and have followed the TSB on wire corrosion and problem still exists. It existed this morning. I borrowed a tech 2 computer and have video and photos of the problem with the brake sensor. The brake pedal position reads a negative position of -50 and this turns on the brake light. When brake lights acting normal it reads a brake pedal position of +3. As you push the brakes down the pedal position increases from the starting negative value until it gets to 50 and then the brake lights turn on. So I have a 100 point travel where the brake lights work the opposite. I have this all on video. Also, when this problem is appearing, if I depress the brake pedal and release it, the brake light goes off. I then count to five and the brake light comes on. This is probably due to the computer going into some alarm mode. If I drive down the street pushing brake pedal every five seconds, the brake light stays off. I will return the vehicle to dealer and show my video. The problem is intermittent and goes away when the car/cockpit warms up. It doesn't happen all the time and when it does happen it goes away after about five miles of driving. Updated 03/27/lj.
Was driving on freeway with cruise control on then suddenly the cruise control disengaged. When I looked in the rear view mirror I noticed that my 3rd brake light was coming on by itself and staying on and I was not pressing brake. Brakes come on and stay on when not pressing brake pedal and turn off when brake pedal is pressed. Makes other cars behind me think I'm braking when I'm not and when I do brake it looks as if I'm not braking. Risk getting rear ended because of this. Safety issue.
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, another driver informed him that the brake lights were erroneously illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the brake sensor needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000.
I have a 2008 Saturn Aura xe. While driving, I noticed that occasionally the brake lights (all 3) would illuminate when the brake pedal was not pressed and they would occasionally not illuminate when the brake pedal was pressed.
Brake lights work opposite of expected. That they are on when accelerating and go off when braking!! this is very dangerous. I have had it to gm dealership 3 times and they say it drove fine, and charged me a diagnostic fee. Granted traction control light only goes on sporadically to cause this mess which also causes cruise control to not work. Just because Saturn is no longer a car maker, there seems to be a cover-up by gm to ignore this problem. Yet the employees get $6,000. Bonus checks. To only have 212 of these complaints is the tip of the iceberg. The web blogs are loaded with these complaints and no quick fix of conductor jell to help corrosion will fix the chip that has gone dangerously wrong. This is an accident waiting to happen in detroit rush hour commutes each day when brake lights are reversed! please help me. I think it is unethical to sell the "as is" to someone uninformed, so yet I keep driving it each day. Note that very often I get yelled at in car washes to get off my brake due to this reversal error in brake lighting. They will verify my problem even though gm will not.
I was driving on the highway with my cruise engaged. When all of a sudden, my cruise turned off. I look in my rear view mirror and I saw my third brake lights on. That's when I found out that my back brake lights come on randomly when I drive. When I use my brake pedals than my brake lights turn off. And when I accelerate, my brake lights turn on. I need some help. I have a 6months old in the car and I feel this could get us into an accident.
Brake lights come on when foot is off the brake pedal. Brake lights will only turn off it pedal is tapped but brake lights will again come on a short time later 10 seconds +/- without foot on pedal. Also the cruise control will either not engage or will disengage on its own . The brake light problems is obviously dangerous. I've talked to several other people who have this same problem with the Aura, g6, malibu build platform. Please issue a safety recall.
The contact owns a 2008 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that the brake lights and rear window brake light would illuminate and dim intermittently. The brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer more than four times, but the failure could not be remedied. The rear brakes were calibrated several times, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
The brake lights come on without touching the brake. Brake lights go off when I step on the brakes. I have taken the car into the gm dealership 4 times but the fix is only temporary. The brake light failure returns in about 6 months.
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that the brakes light would illuminate when the brake was not being depressed and would not illuminate when the brake was being pressed. The dealer was unable to determine what caused the failure. The dealer stated that they would try replacing the brake light switch. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 58,000. Updated 09/05/lj the dealer replaced wires and termiinals within the circuit and reclaibrated the brake pedal position sensor. So far, there have been no more problems.
Last year sometime in 2012 I started noticing my brake light staying on. I have taken it to the dealership and they have looked at the problem three times. The problem stay exists to this day. Still trying to get the issue resolved.
About two years ago I noticed intermittent issues with my brake lights. They would be on when I was not pushing the brake, and then they would turn off when I applied pressure to the brake. I got this problem corrected at a certified gm service center. To my knowledge (without the repair report available) they applied grease to a part of the vehicle as described in the service bulletin. That worked for about eight months and now I am having the same problem again with my brake lights, so clearly the service bulletin issued by gm is not correcting the problem. Due to my inability to pay to get this fixed and the major safety concern it possesses if driven I have left it parked in my driveway for about two months, which in turn has left me with battery issues. I am scheduling service to be done on the car today, because I can no longer go without a vehicle, but gm needs to recall the vehicles which are having problems with brake lights. This is a major safety concern that could result in serious wrecks. I have had several close calls due to this issue and after said close calls stopped driving my vehicle.
Service esc warning light. I was flagged by another vehicle in the evening that my brake lights were not working. When you press the brake pedal the brake light goes off. When you release the brake pedal the brake lights go on. I took my car to joseph Chevrolet in cincinnati OH. Joseph chev replaced the body control module on Aug 22, 2011. It cost me $535. 72. They did not inform me that other vehicles were having the same problem. In September 2013 the brake lights again were not working properly. I filed a complaint to gm file # 71-1220534971 because this can cause a serious injury. I took my vehicle to joseph chev again but they could not replicate the problem and acted like they didn't have any idea what was wrong. Again after my 3rd visit to joseph Chevrolet with my car and a new file # 71-1300874571 joseph chev charged me $269. 16 to replace the brake switch and repair wiring at bpp switch. I pleaded with joseph chev and gm that the car was unsafe driving with brake lights not working properly and they should not be charging me over $800. 00 for a defect that is happening on other Saturn Aura vehicles. Having brake lights I thought was a basic function. They would not help me out with the charges. I had to spend the money because the car was unsafe to drive.
The first time I noticed my brake lights illuminated when I didn't have my foot on the brake was while driving on the garden state parkway. I was passing through the toll booth and began to accelerate when I noticed through my rearview mirror that my brake lights were on. I stepped on the break and the went off. I must say because feared it would be a costly fix I ignored it for a long time until I saw another Saturn Aura with the same issue. I drove behind the elderly woman until we both at a traffic light and I pulled along side her to inform her of what I saw. I also told her my car was doing the same thing. She thanked me for telling her a drove off. I took my car to a mechanic who told me he did believe it was a electrical problem but could be absolutely sure until he was able to keep the car for the day. Again not really in a position to fix what may be costly, I continued to drive. Finally I was stopped by another motorist and he explained that while driving behind me he noticed the brake lights came on but as we approached the traffic light which was red I slowed down( stepping on the brake) and the light went off until I was at a full stop and my foot was pressed firmly on the break then the break light come back on. As soon as I saw the recall I called my local gm dealer right away and told them what was happening with my brakes and the fact that when I try to move my gear out of park into drive I sometimes have to force it because it seems stuck. They said they would check to see if my car was included in the recall. Well what do you know its not. This I find very hard to believe, that my car would be doing almost exactly what was described in two recalls but my car(based on my VIN#) is not included. I believe gm is tying to minimize their responsibility for the repair of the cars they willing sold knowing they had issues.
The contact owns a 2008 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brake lights would turn off and while the brakes were not engaged, the brake lights would stay illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake control module was faulty. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on multiple occasions. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The failure mileage was 33,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact noticed that the brake light would illuminate when the brakes were depressed and when the brake pedal was released, the light would shut off. Also when the brake light was illuminated, the cruise control would disengage, and if the brake light was off,the cruise control would engage . Neither the dealer or the manufacturer had been notified and the vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The current mileage was 91,950 and the failure mileage was 68,763.
I am the original owner of a 2007 Saturn Aura xr that was purchased in August 2007. Almost immediately I had to bring the car back to the dealer in sept 2007 to investigate "service air bag" and "esc" warning lights. Additionally, I began noticing that my brake lights were malfunctioning. They would be on while I was driving and then would go off when the pedal was depressed. This made for very unsettling driving. I had to bring the car back to Saturn twice in 2007 to "fix" the problem but I has started again. I brought the car to the chevy dealer that now provides service for Saturn customers on June 22, 2010 to address the brake lights. They kept the car for two days and supposedly "fixed" it. Well the problem still persists. You can remote start the car and the brake lights are on. You can turn the car on normally,, depress the brake pedal and the brake lights illuminate but fail to go off. The center brake light doesn't appear to want to work correctly either. This is very frustrating. Does anyone know the correct solution to this problem? ps-my mileage is 18,000 miles.
