4 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Started with the ignition switch, in the winter time the car wouldn't start when it was too cold. The security system icon would come on an I would have to wait for about 10 to 15 minutes so the car could start again. This went on for few years during winter time. No recalls back then. Then the power steering light started coming on, the steering wheel would lock making it very hard to turn or manuver. Happened on highway or regular streets. Brought the car in to dealer on July 2013 and they replaced the power steering motor per their "special policy". The car got worst instead of better since then. The power steering light would come on an now the whole electrical system keep going crazy. The monitor would blink and show power steering words, the side lights would come on an blinked by itself. The dealer said we would have to replace the steering colum which would cost me around $1000 to replace. I couldn't afford that and there were no recalls back then. Also the car would start to shake when I would press on the gas pedal an go from 10 to 20 to 30 miles. The monitor gauges would move by itself while driving. There was also a sound coming from the gear box as if the car was changing gears by itself. Brought to a private mechanic which didn't charge me to diagnose and he said beside power steering the cars computer may need to be replaced. That would cost me another $1000. I decided to stop driving the car altogether afraid I would get into an accident and could afford to pay for more repairs. A year later brought in the car to dealer to have the ignition switch be replaced with the recall and told them about the power steering problems had continued. They said there was no recall on my car for that. They said if I wanted they would charge me $119 or so to diagnose the car and any repairs I would have to pay out of pocket. Still safety issues they choose to ignore!!.

8 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

I just recently purchased a 2005 Saturn Ion. And when I was at the dealership it started like a dream. A few weeks later the temperature dropped to 34 degrees f or so. And it would not start. I was fifteen minutes late to work because this so called "reliable" car wouldn't start because it thought I was breaking into it. If I could do it all over again, I would've purchased the chevy, this is not a common problem as I've been reading online. I don't understand why this hasn't been recalled yet. We're paying a lot of money for some piece of crap car that doesn't start when it's too cold/damp out. Something needs to be done soon!!!!!.

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

Okay when I first bought this car back in 2005 they had a recall for the ignition switch and replaced it. Since then back in 2009 when I lived in colorado when it would get really cold the car would not start. I tried and tried to complain to gm about this problem and they wouldn't help me at all like I was crap out of luck. I cant remember if I complained to you guys or not. To deal with this situation my husband and I ended up disconnecting the alarm and haven't had that problem since. Now for about 4 years my car has decided it wanted to keep the key when I try to turn off the engine. And I have to fight with it just to get the key out. My car stalled at two stop lights before, I was thinking it was the battery but now with the recalls I am thinking its more than just the battery.

14 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

It was about 25 f at about 8 am vehicle would not start or crank. The pass lock light came on, which when I researched said that I was starting with the wrong key. Upon much more research I found this to be a common problem with these 2003-2006 Ion. After many ignition switches were replaced and even the onboard computer, the same problem would recur. The best solution I found came from an airplane mechanic. Be sure the ignition is off. He said to spray lps electro contact cleaner (any pure alcohol contact cleaner will work) into the ignition. Saturate it. Wait 10 minutes for it to dry then spray sea foam deep creep penetrant and lubricant into ignition switch. This worked for 2 years for me. It happened again this past March of 2011. I repeated this process and have had no problem since. This works by cleaning out the old stiff lubricant gm used during manufacture and putting in a lighter lubricant. Total cost for both sprays was under $20.

16 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

I have had ignition problems with my vehicle. There have been times when one of my keys locks the ignition, all occurrences while trying to turn the car on, and I had to really work at it to get the key to turn. It could take up to 5 minutes of jiggling the key hard before it turns. This ended when I started using my other key. With this other key, there have been four separate occasions when my car would not start. When this happens, the radio turns on but there is only a buzzing sound coming from the car. If I wait long enough, the car will eventually start. However, I don't always have time to wait. This happens both after the car sits no more than a few days or after having driven it the day before. It also happens in cold weather and in moderate weather. I cannot drive a vehicle that is so unreliable, but I also cannot afford to purchase another one.

Failure Date: 05/15/2007

I have a 2005 Saturn Ion and it has a habit of not starting at times. This has happened several times since my husband and I have owned it. We turn the key in the ignition and the car will not start. We have to wait anywhere from 10-45 minutes for the car to start and it sometimes cause my husband to be late to work. This is an even bigger concern since we have a four month old son. We have not had the money or time during the week to go the Saturn dealership but I have called the company who handles my extended warranty and he said that this is a common issue. From the discussion boards I gather that this is a very common issue and there should be a recall.
