49 problems related to equipment have been reported for the 2006 Saturn ION. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

While driving the car will automatically shut off. I can be on the freeway at 55 miles and the car will just die. I can be at a stop light and the car will die. I have taken it in and twice they said they found nothing however the problem still exsist. I thought that with the recall repair of the ignition switch it might help but it hasn't and my key still gets stuck in the ignition at times and I don't even have anything hanging on the key only the remote. Basically once you feel the car losing power and all dash lights show up, you need to restart the car to proceed. Very dangerous especially on the road.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

Vehicle doesn't turn on in below freezing temperatures. Has happened on multiple occasions. Electrical works, but engine won't turn over, just makes a clicking noise. After temperature warms, vehicle will start.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2012

Driver side window won't roll down. Window has stopped working on multiple occasions, with multiple repairs.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

The car would not start on several occasions. Would have a hard time turning the key in the ignition and it will start after 15-20 minutes. This would happen anywhere, anytime. So, we took it to the dealer biddulph Mazda, which is where we purchased it. They serviced the car. They tested the starter, there was nothing wrong with the starter. They could not pin point the problem, so they told us to have a new key made. Got a new key made, but the problem continued. To this day, it still happens occasionally.

My 2006 Saturn Ion will not start every time I try to turn it on. The battery has been replaced and is not the cause of the issue because everything in my car still has power but the ignition will not turn over. I took to the Saturn dealership after this has happend to me several times and I was told that my ignition switch needs to be replaced. After doing some research online this seems to be a common issue with this make and model of car. This is a very inconveint problem to have with your car. Having to worry if it will start in the morning or not and then how to go about your day if it does not start trying to find a ride to work or even possibly missing work because your car wont start because of a common ignition problem on the manufacturers side. I feel that this issue needs to be placed on the recall list. . So that we as consumers can have this very common issue fixed with out cost to us. . Since we already invested money into a vehicle we expect to work.

I do not recall the exact date of the first occurrence. My car dies randomly while driving. It happened a several times before the recall. I had the recalled items related to this problem 'supposedly' repaired several months ago by an authorized gm dealership. It continued to die while driving. I took it back Saturday to the dealer and my car is still there. They are having problems duplicating the dying situation. I told them they don't need to duplicate it, just re-repair the recall items. If they cannot find the problem, I do not feel safe driving my car and do not want it back. The day I took it to the dealer, I was making a left hand turn from the busy main street of my town into a parking lot and it died before I even reached the curb (no bump). Luckily, there was no oncoming traffic (I take extra precautions for fear of my car dying) or I would have been creamed. A woman driving out of the lot had to stop and allow me to put my car into neutral and start it back up again. What recourse do I have if the problem is not fixed and found this time? it was supposed to be fixed the first time and it was not. How do I have a guarantee that it will actually be fixed this time? what if it is not? I do not want to out my child's life or my life or any other human being's life in danger by driving a deathtrap car. Will gm replace my car for me with a different one? my car is completely paid off. Please help!.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

In the summer of 2010, while attempting to turn off my car my key became stuck in the ignition. All attempts to remove key failed and had car towed to dealership. Was told that lock ignition fell apart and needed to be replaced. Because car was still under warranty I did not have to pay for repair. Nearly three years later (June 2013), I was attempting to turn off my car and key was stuck in on position. Again all attempts to get key out failed. Had to get service technician to turn off car by removing fuse in car to turn it off. Towed car to dealership and was told that lock ignition needed to be replaced again. This time car was not under warranty and I had to pay out of pocket for repair and rental car. Less than one month later I had begun to smell gas on the outside and inside of my car. Brought to service center and was told that fuel pump was leaking and fell under recall so I am not responsible for paying but still have to pay for rental car. I believe that the lock ignition part should be recalled because many people have complained about this defect. Additionally, the fact that so many issues with my car stem from part defects that I have no control over, gm should be made responsible for replacing the car and/or providing monetary compensation. I hope this complaint will be investigated thoroughly and some remedy should be given for people who have purchased this car and now have to deal with the numerous defects. I, like many others, cannot afford to buy a new car and should not be stuck with a lemon.

Vehicle's engine shut off while operating, however electrical remains on. Usually happens going over speed bumps at low speeds. Had to turn off and restart engine to operate. Incident occurred 2 times in 2009. Didn't give much thought until it started to recur in 2012. Has happened 3-4 times since. Also key gets stuck when trying to shut vehicle off. The key getting stuck when trying to shut off has occurred almost daily for the past 4 months. Didn't realize the incidents were related until I heard about the Saturn recall on ignition switches and heard about similar problems.

The 2006 Saturn Ion ignition locked on with the car running in park. This seems to be a chronic problem with Saturn Ions. The vehicle can not be turned off and the key can not be removed. It gets completely locked in place. The vehicle remains running, wasting gas and could be a safety hazard if something else is happening and the vehicle must be shut off quickly and can't. The only way to shut the vehicle off is to disconnect the battery and pull an ignition fuse. The key remains locked in place. I'm putting this under 'fuel system-other' because the ignition turns the fuel system on and off. I originally parked and tried to shut the vehicle off because I smelled fuel. Luckily it was coming from somewhere else and was just in the air. But it was scary to smell fuel and not be able to shut the vehicle off.

The current recall of the ignition switch on gm vehicles. I wanted to put in a report that I was made aware of this defect from a dealership repair man back in early 2008. I purchased my vehicle in early 2007 and a year later I was unable to start my vehicle. I can't recall the exact scenario but think some lights came on or something, because I knew to call the Saturn dealership in golden valley mn to report the issue and ask what they suggest. The repair person said that he was pretty certain it was my ignition switch, based on the symptoms I reported with the car. He told me how to get it started by doing something different with the key in the ignition, and sure enough I got it running. He said to bring it in right away and they would take care of it. When I got there, he said there would be no charge, as "gm should have made a recall on this because many people have had this problem, and I don't know why they aren't doing that. " fortunately for me I did not have an accident from this, but interesting that back then, the dealership knew exactly what the issue was and questioned then why nothing was being done.

#1. Key. In 2008 the key started getting stuck in the ignition when I attempted to turn the car off. The car kept running. It would take up to 10 tries before the engine stopped. Even then I could not always get the key to come out right away. I could not get the key to turn when trying to start the car. The key often would also get stuck in the ignition and I could not get it out and would have to leave it in. 2014 I could not get it to come out at all and at one point the car would not shut off. Mechanic replaced (at my expense) the ignition. #2. When I purchased the car an add on offered was a passive kill switch called id system. Repeatedly the air bag light would come on, and the on-star system also notified me. It would go back off. I took it to the dealer in 2006 and 2007 and was told since the light was not on then that they could not/would not do anything. In 2013 the light was always on. I was also having other electrical problems (see #3). I went to an auto electrical shop. While diagnosing the initial problem the shop found that when the kill switch was put in the company had taken out the relay for the air bag and put the put the id system relay in it's place. The result was that neither worked. The shop pulled out the kill switch relay and replaced the air bag one. Which I paid the bill for. Now the air bag light is starting to come back on at times. I assume the air bag is not working. #3. In 2013 the alarm on the car started going off by its self. That day it went on and off 5 or 6 times till I realized it might be my car. The neighbor said there was no one around it at the time. I don't turn on the alarm. I ended up disconnecting the battery. I took it to the shop (see #2) but since it was not doing it then they could not find the problem. #4 I have never been notified by gm that others were having these problems.

I have had nothing but problems with this car since I bought it, 2006 Saturn Ion. Why don't you guys just purchase them from us and get them off the road? we are paying out way more than what they are worth. You guys have been spending a bunch these past few months, wouldn't it be chaper just to buy them from us? I'm fed up with all thse problems that I have had and theres no one that will buy these cars from us, I have advertised many of times and no one wants them. I have a 3 year old son and I don't feel comfortable with him in my Saturn. I am going to call whoever I can to see what I can do about someone getting my car off the road because I'm so tired of feeling unsafe and not being able to drive my Saturn because of the terrible feeling I get when I think I am going to have to drive my son in this piece of crap. I would greatly appreciate it if you could havr someone contact me or give me furter information on who to contact about my situation. My name is dorothy deane and you can contact me at 3045348964. Thank you and I'll be waiting for someone to call me ASAP! !.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2007

Was driving at a slow speed off an off ramp when my car felt like it stalled and it turned off which I thought it was another cat who hit me because there was no other explanation at the time. It set me in a spin and the car hit the wall but the air bag didn't go off. I ended up in the hospital with an injured back and head. Could it have been the faulty ignition? my car kept stalling after the body repair. I took the car into the dealership in dumber of the same year and my car was diagnosed with a faulty ignition switch. This is not the only incident but thankfully I was just injured and I still have my life.

The contact stated that after purchasing a new vehicle there was a pronounced scraping noise as though the vehicle was dragging the ground when making turns or on bumpy roads. This occurred at any speed. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who said this problem was due to an after market tow hitch. No repairs were made at the dealership. He returned home and removed the after market tow hitch, but this did not correct the problem. No further action has been taken at this time.
