I was smelling gasoline in my garage and took my car to my local gm dealer. They confirmed that it was a cracked fuel pump in my 2006 Saturn Ion redline. This was a recall (NHTSA recall id number: 09v419000), but did not include my VIN number, so it cost me $576 out of pocket for this repair. The recall needs to be expanded.

Vehicle started to have a strong odor of gasoline, I checked with my dealership about my warranty and it expired June 2011. I took the car to local repair shop as it was unsafe to drive. They discovered the fuel pump module was leaking fuel (as in bubbling around the top of the tank). The vehicle was repaired although the first two parts shipped in were broken upon arrival at the shop. I was provided with a copy of the special coverage bulletin #09275a addressing this exact failure. My VIN falls within the parameters but my location (virginia) does not. The approved states all appear to be southern, hot, states. The recent temps in northern virginia/ DC area has been very hot over the last two months. I feel that gm should reimburse me for the repair costs or at least the cost of the parts.

Upon further research, the mechanic found the a recall related to the problem. The consumer then took the vehicle to the dealer, but was informed the vehicle did not qualify for recall #09v419000.

The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacture was made aware of the failure who did not offered any assistance since the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 (component: fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump). Our 2006 Saturn Ion has a major leak in the fuel pump reservoir. The leak is defined in NHTSA campaign id number 09v419000 and is listed as a recall 09226a. Dealer is confirming this is the problem our vehicle has, but gm says this as a 'special policy' repair bulletin number 09275 and not a recall 09226a. Gm is refusing to fix the issue because our vehicle has a branded title as salvage. They will repair a salvage titled vehicle under a 'recall' but not on a 'special policy' extension. Dealer stated the issue is the leaky fuel pump and not cuased by any other damage. Apparently there are a lot of 2006 Saturn Ion's with the same issue that gm has slid around fixing because they didn't make it a recall, but a special policy and this is a fuel leak on the pump and a major safety issue due to an admitted faulty component.
The contact own a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that she could smell a strong odor of fuel while driving, due to a fuel leak. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not inculded in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump), due to the state the vehicle was registered in. The failure mileage was 64,100.
The fuel pump on my 2006 Ion with only 43,500 miles needs a new fuel pump do to failure that is covered under gm recall 09226 in certain states. I have been told by a gm service department that I should not drive the car until it is fixed since this issue is a fire hazard. I have requested the repair, quoted at over $1000, to be covered in full due to the fact that this failure is the exact issue described in the recall, but the dealer and gm do not seem concerned about potentially losing all of my business for repairs and future vehicle purchases.
Was making a left turn cross trafic. Waited for a break in cars to go. I hit the gas and it moved then the engine died in cross traffic. My wife almost got hit from oncoming traffic. The mil light came on. I am a mechanic for the state of idaho. I could see fuel dripping. I remove fuel tank to find leak. Found to be a cracked fuel pump. This is going to kill someone.

On June 25th 2011 I noticed the smell of gasoline coming from my 2007 Saturn Ion. I noticed the smell is strongest near the rear driver tire very close to the fuel pump module. Knowing already that this is a known issue with 2007 Saturn Ions I contacted them immediately. They told me that mine is not including in any recall and no exception would be made. I will have to try to find a fuel pump module and replace it. Nothing has happened yet but I do have to keep driving the vehicle until the repairs can be made. I feel as though since it is a known problem in these vehicles it should be covered.
Noticeable gas smell around the area of the vehicle's gas tank which became worse while driving. I brought my car into a local service station to have it looked at. Eventually, after removing the fuel tank, they found the cause of the leak to be a faulty fuel pump module. This is a known problem with Saturn Ions and there is a recall in effect (09v419000), but it only applies to vehicles that are sold or registered in certain states. I feel limiting a recall to a certain area is wrong. This is a very serious problem that could have resulted in my vehicle catching fire. I believe that Saturn (gm) should take responsibility for any vehicles that are at risk for this defect and should reimburse the owners for any related repairs. This should not be limited to certain states.
2006 Saturn Ion. Consumer states in June 2011 the vehicle developed a strong odor of gasoline the consumer took the vehicle to an auto care center, where he was informed of a recall. The consumer then contacted Saturn customer service and was informed that general motors would be releasing recalls in a batch and they were waiting for the parts. The consumer took the vehicle to a local dealer and was informed the vehicle was not covered under warranty for a fuel leak. The consumer approved the repair estimate of $500 for the replacement of the fuel pump, because evidence showed fuel was leaking from the pump. Saturn advised the consumer to contact them, once he received the recall letter so he could be reimbursed, but until then, there was nothing they could do.

I just had to have my fuel pump replaced after only 20k miles on my Saturn Ion 2007 due to the smell of gas and leaking on top of the pump, I was told by a gm dealer that there was a recall on this 09226 fuel odor or spotting on ground-replace fuel pump. My problem is that due to the location I am at illinois I am not included in this recall to be reimbursed for the replacement of the fuel pump. I read the recall and it is only involving the states that are considered hot. (it does get into the 90s-100 in illinois also. All somebody had to do was throw/drop a match and it could have ignited a fire in the car. This also caused headaches while driving due to the gas fumes I had to inhale while driving the vehicle. I was hoping this was a good avenue to take and have someone look into why and when illinois and other states were going to be included in this recall. We are all in the same danger no matter what state you live in.
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated there was a strong smell on the outside of the vehicle. The dealer diagnosed that there was a fuel leak and that the fuel module would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer made the contact aware of NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) recall, but the VIN was not associated with the recall. The failure mileage was 121,080 and the current mileage was 122,000.
There was a special policy that involved a gm recall of 53,000 chevy cobalt, pontiac g5 and Saturn Ion models for a fuel leak because of a faulty modular reservoir assembly on the fuel pump module that cracks. Within that recall were specifically 2006 and 2007 Saturn Ions. The recall included alabama, arkansas, California, florida, georgia, hawaii, louisiana, mississippi, north carolina, new mexico, oklahoma, south carolina, tennessee, and texas. This is exactly what happened to my car. I was driving and I gradually smelled gasoline. An independent mechanic confirmed there was a gas leak. This was a big safety concern because the car could have exploded if someone threw a lit cigarette out of the window from another car while I was driving on the highway. I brought the car to the chevy dealership and the service department confirmed it was the fuel pump module and that my VIN wasn't covered under the recall. I called Saturn to complain about it. Then they called the dealership and then Saturn called me back and told me that based on the information they have gathered, it was not a defect. A fuel pump module typically lasts the life of the car and doesn't crack. This was clearly a defective part, especially considering that they acknowledged the defect in 53,000 other 2006 Saturn Ions. Saturn should clearly compensate me for this repair and acknowledge that this is a much wider safety issue than they originally openly admitted to.
Saturn Ion2 2007-the fuel pump module assembly went out on my car. I have taken it to 3 dealerships to finally get it fixed. However gm stating not covered by my warranty. The first time I took it was in September hard to start diag was done they said nothing wrong. Then in December took to other dealerships by this time there was the smell of gas getting stronger. Both dealerships indicated that gm does not cover my specific VIN# or consider it a defect even though I have it written in my warranty that all parts are to comply with epa which it did not. I am concerned others may also have my defect problem and it could result in serious fire or death. All owners should be notified via recall letter from gm.
1. No special events leading up to failure 2. Needs new fuel pump module kit due to cracks in plastic tubing. Car leaks flammable gas vapor at this time-could lead to liquid leakage. 3. Local mechanic has ordered new fuel pump module kit to fix problem.

Nhtsa campaign id number: 09v419000. Fuel leakage. I had the same exact problem with my 2006 Saturn Ion but yet it is not covered under the recall due to it being registered in colorado. I had to replace the part myself at $400. I saved the original fuel pump just in case you decide to add colorado to the recall list for this. Why would the same exact problem that is listed in the recall not be covered due to a different state. I think this is unfair.

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated she noticed an overpowering gasoline fuel odor. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where she was informed that the fuel pump module was fractured. The contact was able to locate a recall for the failure (NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000: fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump) but was advised that her vehicle was not included in the recall. I am the owner of a 2007 Saturn Ion redline with 65,000 miles. During the first week in August 2010 I noticed a strong smell of gasoline inside the passenger compartment. I walked around the outside of the vehicle and noticed that the smell was even stronger toward the rear of the vehicle. After searching the internet for a possible cause, I discovered my vehicle has a current recall for the fuel pump. "manufacturer: general motors corp. Mfr's report date: oct 22, 2009 NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 n/a NHTSA action number: n/a component: fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump" however, this recall only pertains to certain states, of which my vehicle was not purchased in and is not currently registered in. A leak in the fuel system is a major safety risk as it can result in fires or explosions during normal operating conditions or accidents. New jersey as well as the rest of the nation need to be included in this recall notice due to the clear defect present in the vehicles manufacturing.
