Saturn ION owners have reported 7 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
As I was driving along a city street last autumn, the transmission started shifting with a noticable jerk each time it went into another gear. This is an automatic transmission. When I came to a stop light I put the car into park. When I put the car back into gear, there was an even stronger jerk. The jerking kept on each time the car shifted. At the next light I turned the car off during the red light and then turned it on when the light turned green. The problem continued, so I went straight to an auto repair shop. They were busy so I had to wait awhile, and then it took me awile to explain the problem. When the technician went out to see what the problem was, the problem was gone. Isn't that soooo typical. This last summer, the same thing happened. This time I went home and let the car sit there for 15 to 20 minutes. The problem was gone again. My fear is that this could happen at highway speed and god only knows what could happen then.

Was stopped at a red light; when it turned green, car did not accelerate. Had to be pushed off to side of road; turned car off, then re-started it. It drove a short distance, then had no power, but was able to coast safely to side of road. Car was towed to gas station. Mechanic checked fluid level was good and did not have burnt smell. Tried to start car again - made low winding noise and would not go into gear. When gas pedal was pressed, the speedometer moved. Mechanic said it needs new transmission. Car has 90,000 miles.

I own a 2005 Saturn Ion and the power steering was going. I took the car into the dealership, they said the steering motor had to be replaced, now they replaced it for free, but made me wait a week and sent me back out on the road with a car that had power steering that worked sometimes and not other times. Then two weeks later the entire car started to fail. The speedometer, the transmission would not switch gears, the power steering went again, and the breaks where pretty much gone. So after causing a big scene the car was looked at and found that the transmission module went on the car. So they replaced the part after making me wait two days to get my car back. My concern is why is a car that will be turning 5 years old next month and only has about 27,900 miles on it is having all these big problems. In the matter of one mouth I have has a new brain put into the car. The customer service was awful and rude. They all try to blame each other. When I went to pick the car up the service people would not even talk to me they told me to see the cashier she has my keys. I said I am not leaving here until I test drive it, she said ok, it's park in the lot on the side somewhere. I was like nice, you don't even know where my car is on your lot. So in the matter of one month I have the steering column and the transmission module replaced.

The contact owns a 2004 Saturn Ion. While driving approximately 25-30 mph the vehicle lost power steering. She stated that the vehicle became very difficult to steer and she had to hold on to the shifter and the steering wheel in order to gain control of the vehicle. The vehicle was manual. The contact had taken the vehicle to three local mechanics and they advised her that the steering column needed to be replaced and has referred her to the dealer. The vehicle was not taken to an authorized dealer for this failure. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but she no longer has power steering. While driving the vehicle also locked in gear and she could not shift out of gear. The contact stated the failure happened at 9,000 miles. The vehicle was taken to the dealer thirty seven times for this failure and they have replaced the wires but the failure continued to occur. The dealer has never diagnosed the failure because the contact would not pay $500. 00 for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 83,000.

I have a 2006 Saturn Ion 2 with a manual transmission. I had trouble with the car not going into first gear from neutral and not going into other gears while traveling at higher speeds. I would have to shut the car off before I could get it to go in gear. I would then have to let it sit for a few minutes before I could get it to start back up because it would lurch forward and shake really bad then shut off if you tried to start it right back up. I was trying to go out of town July 31, 2006. I was at a red light and the car would not go into first gear from neutral. I finally had to shut the car off to get it to go into first gear. When I tried to start the car, it lurched forward, shook really bad, and shut back off. It repeatedly did this. I had to let the car sit in the middle of the road at the red light for several minutes before I could start the car. I was finally able to get it out of the road heading to a gas station. It shut off again, and we had to push the car through the parking lot where we waited on a tow truck. The Saturn dealership in savannah, GA has not helped me at all. The service manager told me they would not work on my car at all until the problem happened to one of their techs. It did not matter that I was paying for a brand new car with an extended warranty and had experienced the problem. The corporate office in springhill, TN sided with the dealership. I am still proceeding with the lemon law process almost a year later. On July 25, 2007, I will be attending my second arbitration hearing. I am still paying for a car I cannot use as well as full coverage insurance. They also refuse to pay for all of my rental bill even though my extended warranty covered rentals and I needed a way to work.

My Saturn 2004 Ion has been breaking down since I purchased it used in 2005. They have put in 2-3 transmissions and everytime it is cold it won't start. A couple times the would start but not shift into gear! the tech's could not figure out what was wrong so my dad (who does not work on cars ) figured out it was a loose wire! they have replaced the stabilizer bar bushings at least 3 times! the cars heat and radio would just shut off and turn back on they also fixed that a couple times. My car will be paid off shortly but I will not be able to know what it is like to not have a car payment because at any moments notice my 2004 Saturn Ion might fall apart!!!!!.
I bought my 04 Ion2 in January of last year. About one month after my purchase I noticed that my car would downshift while braking downhills, which would cause the rpms to accelerate extremely high. The car would the jerk itself back into the gear it was suppose to be in. This went on for months and is still occuring. I have brought my car to Saturn of springfield countless times. At one point I was in there mutliple times in one week. Not only did is accelerate going downhill but it won't shift into the next gear going up hill, and to top it off when I enter the highway the car wont shift into 5 gear when I am accelerating, I have to remove my foot from the gas pedal to allow the car to shift. Saturn has told me countless times that there is nothing wrong with my car. I only average about 16 miles to the gallon no matter if it is the highway or city. I have gotten to the point were Saturn calls me the next day after every service call. Oh and I just had to have my postive battery cable replaced because it wouldn't stay attached to the battery which would't allow the car to start.
