Saturn ION owners have reported 59 problems related to vehicle speed control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Whilst driving, my car would accelerate on it's own going almost 45-50mph. Pressing the brakes would barely do anything. It won't start when it thinks it's too cold outside, I've had the battery tested multiple times and it is fine. Also, when trying to stop the car and take the key out of the ignition it resists a lot. Happens multiple times a week.

Lost of power steering started some time in 2009,I have no record of the date, but in one of the incidents 06/10/2011 I took a picture of the dashboard showing the date and message on the speedometer. I restarted the engine every time this happen to get it back to power steering . Then I had a situation when I lost speed as I was traveling on a city avenue. The car lost speed when I was traveling around 35 mph,it made a alarm or warning sound and drop down to 10mph and I could not get back to 35mph,I stop the car and I restarted the engine, that was the only way it would recover the power on the engine. It happens two or three times in one month.

About three years ago is when I had my first problem with speed acceleration with my Saturn. I left work and turned on my car and started to drive an hour to go home all the sudden my car began to accelerate and I wasnt pressing the gas. My vehicle continued to accelerate and I had to keep my foot on the brake to slow the vehicle down and it was still accelerating. I had to pull over on the side of the road and pop my car into neutral going approximately 70mph. I somehow managed to get home but my car continued to accelerate without me pressing on the gas. When I would turn the vehicle on while it was still in park the rpm's would go crazy as if I had my foot on the gas petal. I immediately contacted my auto shop who indicated that they could not find anything wrong with my vehicle. I have had several incidents since then and ended up crashing earlier this year. My vehicle sped up on a snowy road and I lost complete steering for my vehicle, I nearly rolled my car and crashed head on into a snow bank. My air bags never deployed, after I contacted my insurance company they were surprised with the amount of front end damage I had on my vehicle that my airbags should have deployed but they did not. I know others are having the same issues with the vehicle accelerating with no application of the gas petal and the brake petal does little or nothing to stop or slow the vehicle down.
The contact owns a 2004 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the throttle suddenly jammed and the vehicle began revving uncontrollably. The contact had to place the vehicle in neutral and coasted to the side. After inspecting the vehicle, he went under his hood and placed the throttle back in its proper place. The vehicle was then towed to his home. It had not been inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 129,000.
Had a recall on 2007 Saturn Ion and was told that bennet motor company was not correcting the problem as Saturn has closed what are we suppose to do also had a problem with the gas pedal on this car also it would not go as it was not getting gas.
L was driving my 2006 Saturn Ion which l bought brand new in 2006 going to pick up my granddaughter in howell mi I was on interstate with my cruse control on as l went on exit interstate,l turned off cruse control when l did that it shut my car down completely ,l was merging on another interstate with no engine running no power steering and unable to restart engine . There was no where to pull over off road safely , l was almost killed car had to come to a complete stop to restart . I have had this happen to me 3 different times , l have taken car to chevy dealership many time complaining about this matter, they said they could not find any problems , l have stopped using my cruse control . L really have a lemon sunroof does not work sun roof leaks , the car starts when it wants to , lam retired 65 years old and take very good care of the Saturn Ion , l would be afraid to sell this 2006 Saturn Ion to the public , l don't want to kill anyone , the car sits ,not using it , won't sell it, what can be done? and there is no retail value for this car . Now there is a recall on ignition switch I feel so very sorry for the people that lost their lifes,l was lucky that l was not one that was killed ,as l said earlier, this car went to dealership 3 different times on this matter , last time l took the car in was last summer 2013 , mechanic drove Saturn Ion and told me there is nothing wrong . The car sits.

Our Ion experienced a loss of power while driving full speed on the interstate multiple times between 2006 and 2008. A car had backed into the Ion while parked in a lot at one point, so we thought it might be related to that, but our experience seems to be identical to those reported under the recall. We attempted to have it fixed several times at gm dealerships. The last fix involved replacing all the main wires in the motor. After that, the ignition seemed to be tighter, and the stalling stopped, but the car would then not start, intermittently. It would randomly go into lock down mode for 10 or so minutes. Just thought we would add our experience to the statistics. It was very dangerous, and we easily could have died. We do still have the car- couldn't afford another. We currently have a rental car and are awaiting our fix.
I purchased a 2007 Saturn Ion 3 quad coup in 2006. In April of 2007 the car began to make loud noised when starting it. It would idle high at stops and would feel like I was rolling gravel when coming to a stop and accelerating from a stop. I made an appointment for service. Saturn made me wait an entire week for an appointment. By time I brought my car in my check engine light was on. Saturn said they found nothing wrong but just updated the computer chip. Not even a week later the same problem occurred. I brought it in and this time they said the throttle body was broke. They claim to have replaced it. Two weeks ago I had the same issues. Loud noises, high idling, the car would literally jump back when I started it. I brought it in again, they said nothing was wrong and just updated the computer again. Yesterday as I was driving my car just stopped. Thank god no one was behind me because I would have been rear ended. I see no reason why their mechanics can't figure out what is wrong. Are they cutting corners to be able to "fix" more cars in one day. I don't see why a two year old car should have all these issues. I see from many blogs and web pages that people are having a lot of problems with this model Saturn. I think that gm should step up and do something about this, besides discontinue the make of the car which they already did. This is no longer an inconvenience, it's absolute frustration. I paid a lot of money for a car to be dependable and to get me from point a to point b safely. I do not want to be locked in my house because I'm afraid to get stranded somewhere.
2004 Saturn Ion 1 the car revs it's engine to over 3000 rpms when you put the car into park and idle. If you shut off the car it is ok, but if you put it into gear the car the lurches forward unsafely.
The contact owns a 2003 Saturn Ion. When the heater is operated, the vehicle would idle extremely high. The failure has been occurring since fall of 2006. The contact stopped at a traffic light and the failure recurred. Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated without the accelerator pedal being depressed. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failures. The manufacturer stated that if the dealer could not duplicate the failures, then nothing could be done. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 33,000 and current mileage was 74,300.

I have had my car in for the same repair 4 times since I got it in may 2003. What happens is the car will rev and/or accelerate (sometimes in park, sometimes in drive) on its own. It has accelerated, almost causing me to go through an intersection with my toddler in the car. It occurs without warning, & Saturn has temporarily fixed the problem under warranty each time. The throttle is replaced each time, but there is a recurrent pattern every 4-6 months, as shown on record with Saturn. I was told by Saturn that they investigated the issue, only finding it in one other car. Being as that problem was solved with the other car, & being as my car was just fixed again, they are unwilling to deal with this issue.
The contact stated intermittently the vehicle will accelerate with the contact's foot on the brake. The vehicle has been to the dealership, and they were unable to duplicate the problem, and no codes were found. This caused the consumer's vehicle to rear end another vehicle. There was property damage. The hood buckled and the grill was damaged. There have been no repairs done. The consumer experienced electrical problems such as the right front turn signal, which turned out to be a loose connection. The vehicle would not start until 10 minutes after the initial start. It was determined the vehicle needed a new module. Updated 01/25/06.
2004 Saturn Ion. While driving on the freeway at approximately 60-65 mph the vehicle began to slow down to almost no power. The rpms went to the red area, and the engine began to make a strange noise. The consumer coasted off the road, after a block or two she got back on the freeway. When driving at freeway speeds the vehicle began to do the same thing again. The vehicle was then taken to the dealership. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and they may not be able to get to it until Monday. This happened on September 15, 2005. (11/15/05).
Consumer complained about electrical problems. While driving and looking at the dashboard all the gauges shined, indicating that nothing was operating normally. The gas gauge/ speedometer, and battery meter, etc.
While driving, the consumer noticed the vehicle would accelerate from 5 to 20 miles on its own. The consumer applied the brakes, but the pedal went to the floor and the vehicle continued to speed. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle. The driver has electrical windows and locks failed. The window would roll up and down intermittently. The door latch would do the same. The master cylinder was replaced as well. These problem continue to occurred and has not been resolved. The driver has informed the mechanic about the problem. Please fill in additional information.
The vehicle stalled while driving on the freeway and going down a hill. The vehicle accelerated up to 5,000 rpm's and would not go down until the vehicle was on a flat surface. Provide further details.
I purchased vehicle in 2004 brand new. The car continues to have a high idle creating a very dangerous driving situation. I must reset the battery once a week to restore it to normal. It seems to be fine for a week and high idle comes back. I have difficulty starting the car in the cold winter months. I must turn the headlights on to warm up the battery before trying to start car. Saturn was no help. Now I am stuck with a lemon! help!.
While the vehicle parked while running the vehicle idling high on its own. The driver noticed while driving the vehicle would hesitate and would stalled. The driver tried to restart, but was able to do so. The driver was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer. The mechanic informed the driver that the vehicle was operating as design. (possible valve sticking) when accelerating from stop, the vehicle would hesitate, then take off at a high rate of speed. This would also occur in reverse as well. There were times when accidents would almost occur. There would be high rpm's of 6000 plus. This was an intermittent problem. It was believed to be a problem with the vti transmission. Additional problems: wind noise when sunshade was cracked, turn signal would not cancel on turns and the chime would go off and was an intermittent problems, the driver's side dash seemed loose and or misaligned, and the wipers would not clear the window.
Throttle froze during the winter months. Consumer contacted manufacturer, and was told that because warranty expired they will not make any repairs without consumer first paying for it. Also, headlight covers were covered with a film that made visibility difficult. On 3-7-04 the vehicle was involved in an accident. When the consumer took her foot off the gas but the vehicle did not slow down. The vehicle began to slide then rolled over. The driver sustain double whiplash and left shoulder muscle spasms. The vehicle was not totaled. On 6-16-04 the front passenger side wheel bearing was replaced.
The two Saturn 2003 Ions I have driven (including my current vehicle) have a transmission problem where, when engaging in third gear, the transmission will "freewheel" for several seconds before engaging with a lurch. The problem can be created by accelerating around a corner while the transmission is shifting from second to third. The cars were manufactured in March/April, 2003.
The litany of problems with this unsafe and unreliable vehicle is long and varied. Multiple transmission problems, electrical issues, losing power while driving, etc. . Gm and Saturn knew of these issues, especially the ones concerning the vti transmission, yet they chose to continue to put the public at risk by denying their responsibilities to correct these problems. The only real way, in my opinion, to make this right is to fully recall and replace these vehicles. This car has been nothing but a nightmare since I bought it brand new in late 2003 and continues to be a hazard. Please force gm to do the right thing and get these cars off the road before someone gets killed.
I bought a Saturn Ion in early August of 2003. I have had 5 separate occasions where the vehicle has stalled out on me and had no control of the car what so ever! the latest time was at the interstate at 65 miles per hour with an eight wheeler truck right behind me. Had I not thought quick and put the car in neutral and restarted the car or else I would have been hit it the rear by a several ton vehicle. I could have been killed! the entire power to the car dies !! the steering column locks up and you the entire car "shuts down" and you are stuck in front of another car w/ only the prayer of restarting your Saturn Ion so that you are not killed! the first person I spoke with in the service department told me that he had heard of this in a "couple of other cars" the service manager claimed he had no knowledge of what the "first service technician was talking about. " I am outraged that Saturn said they would try to get the car to "duplicate" this problem for them. I have told them that it is not something that happens everyday or even every week. Their response was "we can't fix what we do not know is broken" I am going to ask that the car be returned to gmac which is the lean holder! I do not think this is a safe vehicle for myself and my small children. "I strongly discourage others from purchasing the Saturn Ion !!!! I feel as if I have been riding in a death trap!! outraged unfortunate Saturn owner of winston-salem.
While driving at any speed and when first accelerating vehicle would bog down and stall. Vehicle had been to the dealer on four occasions, but dealer was unable to duplicate or resolve the problem.
